Wow what my friends and family told me about Black Bear Diner was totally right. This place is great. Kara was our waitress and her watchfulness is really appreciated. My wife and I had the Baby Back Ribs, my mother had the salmon and everything else was fine. The cost for the three of us was below $50.00....which is good for the tasty, delicious dinner we enjoyed. I've been here 5 times for breakfast over the past 4 months. Never disappointed. Great serving staff. Very quick and friendly. Pancakes, waffles, vegetarian omelette, California omelet all great! Servings are very generous that I always take leftovers home. The biscuits are huge and very good. The sausage links and potatoes on the side are tasty. Everything is always fresh. Busy place at breakfast time so it helps to arrive before 9:00 am on Saturdays. It's my new favorite breakfast place. So glad I stumbled upon it and took a chance. Ignore the 1 or 2 star ratings because of being short staff. This is a nationwide problem. I think these ratings should be fair and based on the quality of the food and not based on something they have no control over. read more

We met friends at Black Bear diner in Orem. Two of us ordered cheeseburger salads. The salads were big, but literally 1/4 of it was big, long pieces of lettuce that you couldn't eat. The cheeseburger turned out to be a hamburger and it was way overcooked. My husband is celiac and the website says there are gluten free options but two waitresses we talked to didn't know a thing about that, so he just had to guess. If you are gluten free, do not go here. The nicest thing about it was it was quiet so we could talk to our friends. read more

As soon as you park... the location and look of the place is just a jaw dropping WOW. We walked in and the place is just so welcoming. The menu set up is impressive. The professional and friendly manner of the staff wins you over right away. Our server Hanna was the combination of experience and knowledge. Excellent customer service. So now, the food. I ordered the meat lover's omelette and my wife had the chicken fried stake. The food arrived fast, it was hot and delicious. The orange juice is the best we had in a long run. We stopped in at this location to visit family in town. Once walking in it had a wonderful atmosphere with beautiful decor. The lighting and seating was great as well. Our waiter seated us promptly and was nice enough to wait for our order as we waited for another member of our party to came. We ordered drinks which came out quickly and the waiter came back often to check on us. Once the remainder of our party came we ordered a variety of food. Unfortunately they informed us their cook had called off and so the food took a bit to come out. When it did some of it was a little colder then others but again we understood. A couple things were overdone but otherwise great. I recommend this place to anyone coming into town and wanting more then the usual breakfast place. read more

In town for business and wasn't expecting much but it was the only option available. Sadly they met my expectations and provided a level of regret i have not had in a restaurant in a long time. Breakfast time at opening (0600) Staff could not be bothered to refill drinks, they were too caught up in listening to the drama of a waitress discuss here sister's situation. "hash browns" were cold, chicken fried steak was frozen road kill with a nasty flavor. The only thing half edible was the pancake. I would have said something but if you cannot get anyone's attention to get a coffee refill how are you going to get their attention to provide feedback. I don't post reviews to be nasty, I do so to help others who don't want to waste their money on a bad experience. It was just not good. I had the chicken fried steak Benedict with hash browns. First off, how do you screw up hash browns? Crunchy and soggy at the same time and tasted very bland. Hollandaise didn't taste right, almost like it was something premixed or packaged instead of just made with butter. Then there was the poached egg- do it right or don't offer it on your menu, it was more like hard boiled. As someone who cooks, when I go out to a restaurant I at least expect the people who cook to know what they are doing. Unfortunately that just isn't the standard anymore. read more

We went to eat breakfast here before my brother's wedding. I've been to Black Bear Diner on a few occasions but this time was just quite terrible. We were only a party of 5 and yet it took our food nearly 50 minutes to arrive. We placed a Togo order for my sister who couldn't come and received her order in 15 minutes. The counter was filled with to go orders. So they were clearly pumping those out way before the dine ins. Wrangling a toddler for an hour waiting for food already wasn't the most pleasant of experiences. By the time we finally did get our food, my brother who was getting married that day, his order was messed up! So after waiting an additional 15 minutes, he had to leave to go get ready for the wedding because we'd been there 1.5 hours already and he hadn't eaten. So he didn't get to eat before his wedding day, no cool. 3rd the scrambled eggs we received were completely burnt and brown on the bottom. Just disgusting. This was the first time we left a restaurant without leaving a tip because it was just that bad of an experience. Very bummed. read more

I hope you have a few hours to spare.. it takes half the day just to get a bite to eat. I mean if it's a holiday or a Saturday morning I get it. And I'm not one of those people showing up during peak hours surprised to find a 45 minute wait.(45 minutes is generous) It's one thing to be slow but they brought me my drinks and coffee, cream, and sugar, with no silverware, napkins or straws. And on the rare occasion somebody brings you anything they run away from the table as fast as they can before you can ask them for anything. I then finally got my pancakes with no syrup or butter. I ordered hash browns with cheese and bacon and they came without it. God this place sucks. read more

The guy who seated us wasn't very friendly, but the server, Tyler, was peppy and nice and helpful and friendly. She was attentive just enough and wasn't irritating by always checking by. The portions were big. We had fried chicken and chicken fried steak. The biscuits here are gigantic. A biscuit dosed in gravy is a meal unto itself. Everything else I ate that morning fades from memory, but that cobblestone of a biscuit I won't soon forget. My friends and I were visiting Provo and found Black Bear Diner on Yelp. I knew I made a good choice when there was a modest wait to be seated, as the place was full of locals. The restaurant itself has an entertaining bear theme, which I'm sure pleases kids. Apparently they occasionally have a bear mascot that drops in one day a week too. The timid, quiet hostess skipped over my group and made us wait an extra ~10 minutes to be seated. That bugged me. We were sitting maybe ten feet away from her but she couldn't get our attention when our table was ready? Make sure you stay near her stand while you wait. The food was delicious and filling. I don't give 5 stars often...this place earned them, in the category of diners. Diners. Diners have played a huge part in pop culture. Mel's Diner, the Seinfeld Diner, and where would crime show detectives be without diners? This place has a Diner feel without being a Diner. The sound of dishes being stacked in the background, the scented sizzle of potatoes greeting you when you walk in, the buzz and flurry of activity and the place is so cute...it's kitschy. I sat at the counter because there was a wait for a table. I was given a Black Bear Gazette, 2 page newspaper...the inside is the menu. My server, Amanda, was cool, calm in the midst of a packed house and attentive. I didn't have to look far for what I wanted. The guy next to me was eating an amazing plate, so I ordered it. California Benedict. Holy Mormon mountains. Delicious. A tender toasted muffin topped with fresh sautéed spinach, onions, thick juicy bacon, a rich, perfectly cooked egg, and a delicious sauce that did not overwhelm the dish. On the side I got the home fries, thin cut, these are amazing. I've never had a potato homefry that was cut this way. Interesting. I'm going to try and duplicate it at home. It all came served on typical diner type dishes with checkerboard edges. I also got a small dish of fruit that came with the meal. The only thing I missed was a slice of toast. Wasn't offered. On the table sits three kinds of Black Bear hot sauce. I like that and the Burn Baby was my pick. Plenty of seating, decadent baked goods, comfort food all day long. Speaking of which, you can order anything at anytime all day from the menu. Hers the deal, it's not a Diner...but it feels like a Diner, especially if you sit at the counter. To start with Angela was an excellent server. Professional, and efficient as well as friendly. I've become quite content with Black Bear Diners and recently developed a fondness for their Bacon Cheeseburger Salad. The one I had tonight has some noticeable differences from others I've had, nothing major other than the pieces of lettuce were huge, like too huge. I was able to navigate the salad, just prefer my lettuce be more bite sized. Now for a few things that made me cringe: 1. Seeing a server eating food in their station in view of customers 2. Muzak way too loud 3. Server (Princess Leia Hairstyle, trainee?) chewing gum while she was at a table delivering food and beverages 4. Another server handling glasses with her hands all around the rim where you drink from Overall not a bad visit just a few things that didn't seem appealing for my taste. read more

Black Bear Diner is the perfect greasy spoon if you just can't figure out where to go. It gets crazy busy after 9am and since I'm an early riser, I can manage not waiting for a table but if you show up anytime after that, be prepared to wait. My favorite item was their breakfast tacos but they've changed their menu and it's tragically no longer available. The portions are Texas-sized, the service is friendly, and it's just a basic breakfast spot with more variation in their menu. read more

Biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, Portuguese sausage, hash browns, and fresh squeezed OJ! Now we have one here at home, we love it for breakfast, lunch, dinner. It is a bustling atmosphere decorated with every kind of bear memorabilia imaginable. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful. This place is going down hill. They always seem so unorganized and chaotic. We were seated in a little cubby that was tucked back away from the main dining room. Easy to be forgotten about. The Chines Chicken Cabbage salad was the worst I've had. This was always one of my favorite menu items. The chicken was still pink. The cucumbers were rubbery and transparent. I don't know if it was the won ton strips or cashews but something tasted somewhat stale/rancid. The husband like his light and fluffy waffle with warm syrup. The floors needed to be vacuumed. It just feels like things aren't as clean as they used to keep it. Not sure what has happened here but it's lower on our list of go-to places to eat now. read more

I live around 30 minutes away and I called in to find out what the wait time would be just so I didn't have to waist my time driving. They refused to give me any information over the phone. I was not asking if they would put my name on a list I was simply asking just what the weight time would be and they were rude and didn't care about my business, they cared more about a "policy" of there's. Wether it is a policy or not you should never be rude to a customer. Every time I go to black bear I love the food but the service always disappoints me so much. I woke up this morning with an apocalyptic hangover. The only thing that could cure it would be a mess of biscuits and gravy. (If only that's what I had gotten) My darling fiance loves black bear diner and placed an order for me. What I received however, looked like a loaf of bread that was baked wrong, then cut in half with a few teaspoons of gravy (WITHOUT sausage??) This is an abomination! And it was freezing cold and soggy?? I took two bites (or tried to) because I feel miserable and am starving and still couldn't choke it down. My theory is that a customer ordered this in the restaurant, looked at it and sent it back, then the staff put it in the back and forgot about it until my order came in, and then sent me this culinary reject. My fiance gave it his best effort to eat it and just couldn't finish. With a mouth full of soggy cold yuck he said "this is literally JUST bread." The amount of gravy would be laughable if I wasn't so cranky and hungry and hungover. This was no laughing matter. Good thing my fiance shared half his food with me. I thought about giving this to the dog but I wouldn't disrespect him like that. read more

You wana go American, this is the place to be. This is seriously Americans comfort food at its finest. Huge servings and you will not go wrong with whatever you get. We tried this the first time after checking their menu. This place is legit. Their biscuit and gravy is extremely good. The biscuit is not flaky, it is very moist inside. There is a wait regardless what day of the week but the food is good it is worth the wait. Just make sure to come here really starving! read more
