Visited this black bear locatIon after my kids and I volunteered at the Turkey Trot Run so we expected it to be crowded and slow...and it was. However, all of the staff were working and working hard while maintaining their sense of humor and customer service. The host was pleasant and funny while chatting with my kids. Our waitress apologized and advised us from the start that they were understaffed and she was doing what she could. Way to set that expectation! When our food arrived my waffle was a bit soggy, but I didn't have to say anything because she was first to notice. She quickly brought an extra plate to take it back and get me another one with me not having to say one word. The cooks were quick to make another one. At the end of our meal, she brought us two free brownies and didn't charge us for drink in an effort to make up for the situation. Again, no complaints from me...all originated from the business in the spirit of customer service. I'll be back for sure! They were all amazing. read more

Visited black bear for breakfast one day but wasn't too hungry. I was feeling health conscious so I got an egg white scramble. Unfortunately it wasn't very flavorful and I had to essentially empty the whole bottle of hot sauce on the table into my dish to give it some actual flavor. The fruits in the salad were quite unripe and bland as well. However, the hashbrowns were tasty and crispy. I must say the service was amazing and our servers were super friendly and helpful. This is the best Black Bear Diner that I have tried. Eater beware, portions are ginormous! I ordered the small club sandwich & it was large...minus the 3rd slice of bread & bacon. The most unsanitary eating environment ever and it absolutely ruined my night. We happened upon Black Bear Diner when the place we wanted to try seemed to be closed down. Since we were in the mood for a diner-style breakfast, we decided to give this a try. Firstly, I felt like I was up in the woods somewhere, and that just made my day since I love the woods! The service was great, the portions huge and the prices appropriate! We had no idea it is a chain until we saw the menu (which looks like a newspaper) with the list of locations. I had the avocado toast, which was simple, but very enjoyable. This was simply fork mashed avocado on toast. Not overly mashed, which some places do which almost turns into more like avocado sauce toast, boo. It came with two sides, I went for the hashed browns which were delightful and a side of cottage cheese (for some protein). My boyfriend went for his usual, two eggs (sunny side up), bacon and toast, and he was very happy. The service here was great for any type of restaurant, but knowing that it's a chain, I commend management for what seems like a very happy staff! Had to have been the best traditional breakfast I have had - and that's saying a lot. Black Bear Diner is conveniently located just on the edge of downtown, in walking distance to all the major hotels. Sunday at 9am during UCD parent's weekend and about a 20min wait. They have a good text notification wait system. Interior is cozy but with a decent amount of seating, decorated mountain rustic and very clean. Staff was super friendly and busily running about. They have an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner classic diner items, including hot sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips, meatloaf, etc. Family had a number of "Bear's Choice" combinations. Mine was the French toast, sausage and eggs over easy. Everything was cooked to perfection and the French toast and pancakes were SO moist and flavorful. The sausage links were big, juicy and refreshingly mild and not overly salty. Coffee was great too, I must of had 4 cups. Big portions and at a reasonable prices; I can see why my son loves coming here so much! read more

We recently had lunch at the Black Bear in Davis during Picnic Weekend. Our party of five was greeted and seated right away. Jacob, our waiter was Fabulous!!! I can't say enough compliments for him. He was polite, articulate, quick and kept coming back to see if we needed refills on iced tea and Pepsi. (yes, we did several times as it was a hot day). The food was very tasty. I had the Taco Salad. It was so good I kept eating it even though I was full. My daughter had the Eggs Benedict Platter, Hubby had the Ruben, the other couple with us had hamburger and fries. I like the Bear decor and merchandise. They also have a juke box to play music which is fun. The ladies bathroom was clean but needs an upgrade. We will be back. I've been to other Black Bear Restaurants, had good experiences, but have never been to the one in Davis. This one reminded me of McDonald's in the past-where the food, service was good, and the service was with a smile. We went to the Davis restaurant, a party of 11, they sat us promptly and we were ready to order-veggie omelette, Reuben sandwich, Mac cheese, bacon cheeseburgers, and other items. Our waitress got our orders correct, brought drinks, all with a smile, patience and courtesy. The food was tremendous-omelette was cooked well, sandwiches were huge ( like Katz' Deli of NYC), burgers were massive, we were all impressed with the value for our meals and drinks (don't miss out on their milkshakes!). Needless to say, we were quite full and very happy with our lunch. The final tab was very reasonable for the quality and quantity of our meals. Service was excellent, maybe it's what's expected from Black Bear. We will be back! read more

Walking in, I noticed this is a very spacious diner. The restaurant has two sections. If you want diner food with a premium taste, give this place a try. This location have such friendly and knowledgeable staff. Their new blackberry sauce covered RIBS are a must-try. Juicy ribs with a tang. Most diners smother their ribs with store-bought bbq sauce, but Black Bear Diner's blackberry sauce is made in house. The steak was grilled to perfection and the over-easy eggs were such a bonus. The portions are big enough to feed a party of two. Also, their house bbq sauce is a blend of bbq, A1 and a bunch of spices, really great tasting. I went to Black Bear Diner this late morning with a coworker. The food was great, but the service was pretty bad. I ordered the barbecue burger with bacon and onion rings (after she specifically asked me if I wanted french fries or onion rings) but instead I got the barbecue burger without bacon and french fries. I told the server that I had ordered onion rings And her response was just. "Ok" she turns around and walks over to the counter at kitchen area, and I started eating my burger, suddenly she returns with a small glass plate, reaches for a butter knife that was on the table that was part of our utensils and then reaches to my plate with her arm right in front of me, without an excuse me, and just starts scooping the french fries onto the small glass plate (as I'm literally chewing on my burger) to get those fries from my plate! . A bit inconsiderate. I'm not sure if this is her first job in the restaurant industry, but it sure did seem like it. My coworker had asked for ranch, after 15 minutes of waiting we had to call her over to ask for it, and again, it took another 10 minutes and by that time we were finished with our food (decided to eat the rest at home) Once again, the food was great, but the service was crap! The woman wasn't rude or anything. She seemed somewhat friendly, but the incompetence was top notch . I like to enjoy my food and the ambience while I'm eating at a restaurant, So I will probably not be returning here, as there are other burger places in town that offer great food and great service. The restaurant feels like a cabin up in the woods and the servers were all so nice. I shared a 3 stack and 2 eggs with steak. Our server warned us that the portions were large, but we continued with caution. When the food came, the portions were huge as she warned, but it was good! The steak was ok, home fries were awesome, but got soggy towards the end. The eggs were perfectly fluffy and delicious. The biscuit was too airy and dry, but could be enjoyed with a generous portion of butter. The pancakes were the star of the show; thick, buttery, and fluffy. Newspaper menus: cute and disposable. But mine was obviously well loved and sorta sad. Ever picked up an article that had been read so much that the paper started falling apart? Really cozy atmosphere with a cabin-like feel. There can be quite a bit of wait (up to two hours) on weekends so plan accordingly! Has all the classic American foods. Me and my roommate were DESPERATELY itching for a tuna melt on a Sunday night to get us through finals. All places we looked for were closed. We overlooked Black Bear Diner at first, however after trying their tuna melt we will NEVER make that mistake again. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with amazing hospitality and a warm and welcoming environment. I just visited this establishment for the first time as a vegetarian and was sad to realize I could not order biscuits and gravy (if you aren't veg I would really recommend). But I powered on. I ordered the vegetable omelette and it was really good. I wish the vegetables were not cut so small but otherwise it was really good. Lots of egg (of course) and the mushrooms were amazing. I loved the combination of spinach, mushroom, bell pepper, onion, and tomato. I also added avocado. I always get the hashbrowns, which were the same as I remember. Crunchy in some places and soft in others. I also got true sourdough toast, which was buttered and perfect. The only negatives were that the cheese wasn't fully melted. Otherwise, it was as good as I remembered. I would recommend this location to anyone willing to wait for 30 minutes for their breakfast. read more

I don't know what has happened to this restaurant over the past 4 years, but it's awful now. We had two meals there on this trip, breakfast and dinner. At breakfast, my "medium cooked" eggs were practically raw and my hash browns were burnt. We had the "Prime Rib Special" for dinner, which was supposed to come with vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, horseradish sauce and au jus. We got a slab of cold beef and onion rings. When we asked for what was on the menu, we were brought a scoop of mashed potatoes with gravy and bowl of au jus, and we were told there were no vegetables in the kitchen. While we were still eating, the waitress gave us our check. No asking if we'd like dessert, or anything else. If I could leave no stars, I would. We will never be going back again. The restaurant deserves 5 stars. Food was very tasty, fresh and so reasonable. A lot of restaurants have to jack their prices up to survive the pandemic since it is so limited seating. Here they keep the same price and the portions are not skimmed at all. Service was great- they kept coming back to your table asking if we need anything. It sounds weird that we are craving for black bear dinner food but we always are looking forward for our treat here on the way back home from vacation. We often take long weekend trips away from home. Where ever we go, Black bear diner is our first search that we can stop by on the way home that we can enjoy the food here.
