This is the best Black Bear Diner that I have tried. Eater beware, portions are ginormous! I ordered the small club sandwich & it was large...minus the 3rd slice of bread & bacon. They also make delicious onions rings! Servers are always friendly at this location. If you eat here, be prepared to overeat & light options are heavy! Fried things are a bit greasy so keep that it mind. read more

We happened upon Black Bear Diner when the place we wanted to try seemed to be closed down. Since we were in the mood for a diner-style breakfast, we decided to give this a try. Firstly, I felt like I was up in the woods somewhere, and that just made my day since I love the woods! The service was great, the portions huge and the prices appropriate! We had no idea it is a chain until we saw the menu (which looks like a newspaper) with the list of locations. I had the avocado toast, which was simple, but very enjoyable. This was simply fork mashed avocado on toast. Not overly mashed, which some places do which almost turns into more like avocado sauce toast, boo. It came with two sides, I went for the hashed browns which were delightful and a side of cottage cheese (for some protein). My boyfriend went for his usual, two eggs (sunny side up), bacon and toast, and he was very happy. The service here was great for any type of restaurant, but knowing that it's a chain, I commend management for what seems like a very happy staff! I'd recommend this place if you're in Davis, or one of the MANY other places that has a Black Bear Diner! read more

Our server Martha was wonderful! Even on a very busy Sunday she was a very attentive and friendly server. Food was yummy too!

We just came back from Davis where we ate at the Black Bear Diner for lunch. Parking is plentiful, we were greeted at the front door and seated. We asked for a booth and got one. I actually ordered breakfast, my mom ordered the street tacos and dad got a burger and fries. All very tasty. My favorite part was how friendly and funny Cody the waiter was. Before we checked out, we decided to get the desert pies to go. One suggestion for the pies is to use regular crust instead of graham cracker crust. We will return in a few weeks! Thank you. read more

We eat here often when we're in Davis, but the food at the Black Bear Diner is so darn good that I could easily eat here most every day!! The menu is chock-full of great, traditional-diner selections, the atmopshere is relaxing and the service is outstanding. Whether it's for dinner, lunch, or breakfast, if you come here you will NOT go away disappointed! read more

Nothing really special about this black bear diner compared to others but I do like the staff here. They are always friendly and do a good job. Huge portions like usual and always a good place to eat when you want to take a nap after a meal. read more

I love Black Bear. As an east coast transplant, good diners out west are hard to find. This location always has hearty portions, great service, and friendly people. It is the place to go in for a really great breakfast anytime. I was there this morning and had Joe's hobo omelette with red country potatoes. Hot fresh, delicious great service and would highly recommend. read more

Had to have been the best traditional breakfast I have had - and that's saying a lot. Black Bear Diner is conveniently located just on the edge of downtown, in walking distance to all the major hotels. Sunday at 9am during UCD parent's weekend and about a 20min wait. They have a good text notification wait system. Interior is cozy but with a decent amount of seating, decorated mountain rustic and very clean. Staff was super friendly and busily running about. They have an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner classic diner items, including hot sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips, meatloaf, etc. Family had a number of "Bear's Choice" combinations. Mine was the French toast, sausage and eggs over easy. Everything was cooked to perfection and the French toast and pancakes were SO moist and flavorful. The sausage links were big, juicy and refreshingly mild and not overly salty. Coffee was great too, I must of had 4 cups. Big portions and at a reasonable prices; I can see why my son loves coming here so much! read more

This place has always been great. The food portions are huge and they make their own sausages, ham and thick bacon that are delicious!!! If you arrived hungry ask for the Grizz, you won't regret it. The pancakes are puffy and delish!! I won't post pics because I was that hungry!! Service is always friendly, fast and courteous!!! Their pies are pretty good if you have a sweet tooth like me! The ambiance is always chill, i always see families, senior citizens groups and lots of students. It is practically like another place with 4 letters in town but with actual food!!! ^_^ read more

Good food. I had the bacon and eggs and they were pretty good. The hash browns could be better, they were too big and undercooked. Good service, nice employees. read more

Walking in, I noticed this is a very spacious diner. The restaurant has two sections. If you want diner food with a premium taste, give this place a try. This location have such friendly and knowledgeable staff. Their new blackberry sauce covered RIBS are a must-try. Juicy ribs with a tang. Most diners smother their ribs with store-bought bbq sauce, but Black Bear Diner's blackberry sauce is made in house. The steak was grilled to perfection and the over-easy eggs were such a bonus. The portions are big enough to feed a party of two. Also, their house bbq sauce is a blend of bbq, A1 and a bunch of spices, really great tasting. Lucas & all the servers here made this experience remarkable. I appreciate you guys and Yelp for having me here today to enjoy such a wonderful dinner, Thank you! read more

We recently had lunch at the Black Bear in Davis during Picnic Weekend. Our party of five was greeted and seated right away. Jacob, our waiter was Fabulous!!! I can't say enough compliments for him. He was polite, articulate, quick and kept coming back to see if we needed refills on iced tea and Pepsi. (yes, we did several times as it was a hot day). The food was very tasty. I had the Taco Salad. It was so good I kept eating it even though I was full. My daughter had the Eggs Benedict Platter, Hubby had the Ruben, the other couple with us had hamburger and fries. I like the Bear decor and merchandise. They also have a juke box to play music which is fun. The ladies bathroom was clean but needs an upgrade. We will be back. I told my daughter who attends Davis, to check out Jacob as a potential boyfriend because he was perfectly nice. ;0) read more

Service at this restaurant was worst we've had at any Black Bear location. Our server Martha was busy talking to the cooks. She wasn't attentive and couldn't get order straight. Mayo for sandwich got to table when almost done and never returned with lemon for tea refills. read more

Apparently they thinks it's cool to just have regulars that urinate themselves and not clean it and proceed to sit down more people in the urine covered booth. The most unsanitary eating environment ever and it absolutely ruined my night. I've been to other Black Bear Restaurants, had good experiences, but have never been to the one in Davis. This one reminded me of McDonald's in the past-where the food, service was good, and the service was with a smile. We went to the Davis restaurant, a party of 11, they sat us promptly and we were ready to order-veggie omelette, Reuben sandwich, Mac cheese, bacon cheeseburgers, and other items. Our waitress got our orders correct, brought drinks, all with a smile, patience and courtesy. The food was tremendous-omelette was cooked well, sandwiches were huge ( like Katz' Deli of NYC), burgers were massive, we were all impressed with the value for our meals and drinks (don't miss out on their milkshakes!). Needless to say, we were quite full and very happy with our lunch. The final tab was very reasonable for the quality and quantity of our meals. Service was excellent, maybe it's what's expected from Black Bear. We will be back! read more

Great service, crap food. Waitress was great, people are nice. The thick cut smoked bacon was basically paper thin just normal generic bacon. The hash browns are undercooked to the point where they were still crunchy, not in the good way. The chef is in the back complaining about people instead of properly cooking things. read more

Good food, respectful and attentive staff, and standard BBD atmosphere. For the price range, it provides good value and choices - I would recommend it. One star off for a bit of quality control and a few expensive items (e.g. orange juice). read more

TL;DR breakfast, lunch, and dinner served all day with large large portions Black Bear Diner is a chain, but the Davis location is a very homey and welcoming restaurant. The restaurant feels like a cabin up in the woods and the servers were all so nice. I shared a 3 stack and 2 eggs with steak. Our server warned us that the portions were large, but we continued with caution. When the food came, the portions were huge as she warned, but it was good! The steak was ok, home fries were awesome, but got soggy towards the end. The eggs were perfectly fluffy and delicious. The biscuit was too airy and dry, but could be enjoyed with a generous portion of butter. The pancakes were the star of the show; thick, buttery, and fluffy. I'd definitely get the pancakes again if I come back. read more

"Yo slick, blow." That's what comes to mind when the letters B and B are followed by a D. Who gets this reference? And did I just age myself a little more? Hmm...don't care! It's a whole lot of diner food and it _baffles_ me that people find this to be exceptional. Maybe I need to be hungover for it to be better next time? That's not saying anything good. Newspaper menus: cute and disposable. But mine was obviously well loved and sorta sad. Ever picked up an article that had been read so much that the paper started falling apart? Yeah, kinda like that. I think they must send a kit of carved posts to each franchise location, as well as all of the (for lack of a better term) crap littered around the diner. All that junk has zero to do with Davis. And if you believe that this is best place for anything in Davis, you've obviously quit looking a while ago. Way to bask in mediocrity folks! The food was edible but incredibly safe. Pass. "Hard pass." read more

I've only been here for breakfast and the service has been attentive and friendly and I always have to take some of my omelette and potatoes home since they serve large portions. I would prefer smaller portions and a lower price. The omelettes shown are $12.50 plus coffee plus tax plus tip. Because of the high price, usually a wait to be seated, and not ample parking available during abusy time and having to take the bill up myself to pay is the reason for the less than perfect score. Black Bear is a solid choice if you're looking for a lot of comfort food. I just visited this establishment for the first time as a vegetarian and was sad to realize I could not order biscuits and gravy (if you aren't veg I would really recommend). But I powered on. I ordered the vegetable omelette and it was really good. I wish the vegetables were not cut so small but otherwise it was really good. Lots of egg (of course) and the mushrooms were amazing. I loved the combination of spinach, mushroom, bell pepper, onion, and tomato. I also added avocado. I always get the hashbrowns, which were the same as I remember. Crunchy in some places and soft in others. I also got true sourdough toast, which was buttered and perfect. The only negatives were that the cheese wasn't fully melted. Otherwise, it was as good as I remembered. I would recommend this location to anyone willing to wait for 30 minutes for their breakfast. read more

The restaurant deserves 5 stars. Food was very tasty, fresh and so reasonable. A lot of restaurants have to jack their prices up to survive the pandemic since it is so limited seating. Here they keep the same price and the portions are not skimmed at all. Service was great- they kept coming back to your table asking if we need anything. It sounds weird that we are craving for black bear dinner food but we always are looking forward for our treat here on the way back home from vacation. We often take long weekend trips away from home. Where ever we go, Black bear diner is our first search that we can stop by on the way home that we can enjoy the food here. Their coffee is also delicious- serving in the hot cup that would keep coffee hot for a longer period time. read more

Bumping up to a full five star rating since Black Bear has become our #1 breakfast choice in Davis. Excellent service and consistently good food. Their biscuits are so good! Eggs cooked properly (e.g., over easy is served over easy, not over cooked). Hash browns crisp and plentiful. Diner coffee hot and satisfying. You'll never leave hungry! I went to Black Bear Diner this late morning with a coworker. The food was great, but the service was pretty bad. I ordered the barbecue burger with bacon and onion rings (after she specifically asked me if I wanted french fries or onion rings) but instead I got the barbecue burger without bacon and french fries. I told the server that I had ordered onion rings And her response was just. "Ok" she turns around and walks over to the counter at kitchen area, and I started eating my burger, suddenly she returns with a small glass plate, reaches for a butter knife that was on the table that was part of our utensils and then reaches to my plate with her arm right in front of me, without an excuse me, and just starts scooping the french fries onto the small glass plate (as I'm literally chewing on my burger) to get those fries from my plate! . A bit inconsiderate. I'm not sure if this is her first job in the restaurant industry, but it sure did seem like it. My coworker had asked for ranch, after 15 minutes of waiting we had to call her over to ask for it, and again, it took another 10 minutes and by that time we were finished with our food (decided to eat the rest at home) Once again, the food was great, but the service was crap! The woman wasn't rude or anything. She seemed somewhat friendly, but the incompetence was top notch . I like to enjoy my food and the ambience while I'm eating at a restaurant, So I will probably not be returning here, as there are other burger places in town that offer great food and great service. It's too bad. Blackbear has lost a customer. read more

Great food, big portions, quirky decor. This place is the go to when you're hungry. Nothing fancy inside, it reminds you of a place you'd see in the mountains, a real country feel, which is fine with me. It's all Black Bear decorated. Now for the food, huge portions, but really good!!! I had the Original Scram-bowl. Red skinned potatoes, biscuit, covered by peppers, onions, ham, bacon, and sausage. All covered in a yummy country gravy, and cheddar cheese. This was awesome, exactly what I wanted walking in hungry for breakfast!! read more

Great food worth the wait, staff was friendly. Big portions. Comfy interior. Gets lots of patrons so be prepared to wait.

I don't know what has happened to this restaurant over the past 4 years, but it's awful now. We had two meals there on this trip, breakfast and dinner. At breakfast, my "medium cooked" eggs were practically raw and my hash browns were burnt. We had the "Prime Rib Special" for dinner, which was supposed to come with vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, horseradish sauce and au jus. We got a slab of cold beef and onion rings. When we asked for what was on the menu, we were brought a scoop of mashed potatoes with gravy and bowl of au jus, and we were told there were no vegetables in the kitchen. While we were still eating, the waitress gave us our check. No asking if we'd like dessert, or anything else. If I could leave no stars, I would. We will never be going back again. Truly a sad state of affairs. read more

Second time eating at the restaurant. Definitely a family restaurant. Totally old school. Will be a regular when I visit Davis.
