I was on my way to Sacramento, but decided to stop by Davis for a late lunch. This is my first time dining at this chain restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. Love the theme inside the restaurant, felt as if I were in a cabin with all the cute bear decor. Even the menu matched the theme since they were meant to be like newspapers. Specials are available too. There was quite an extensive menu of brunch, lunch, and everything in between. I love that there was a section of light bites as I wasn't really hungry. I opted for the one of the light entrees and it came with 2 strips of bacon, eggs, broccoli, and bread. Everything was cooked just right, not too greasy or dry. I had a few bites of the onion rings, and that was great too. Service was fine and as expected. Ample parking in the lot or street parking. We stopped in for breakfast and sadly the server was working solo. One other person was clearing tables and a manager. It really felt short staffed. Plus there was a large UCD event taking place that particular day- you'd think managers would consider extra staff or back up staff in situations like that when the campus is busy it impacts downtown. Unfortunately our table had syrup on it when we were seated and had to ask for utensils - did anyone clean it before we were seated??? Food was hot and was good. My family and I stopped in for a quick dinner while in the Davis area and it was empty when we arrived, but we were greeted and seated immediately. My daughter wanted steak, but they did not have a steak option on the Kid's Menu so I ordered the Less Dinner option of the Santa Maria Tri Tip and it came with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Broccoli. She ate a good chunk of it and there was still plenty to take home for lunch tomorrow - all for $10.99! My husband ordered the Western BBQ Burger with Fries and enjoyed it as well. I love the ambiance of Black Bear Diner - they offer huge portions and there is something for everyone. You're never blown away by their food, but it's comforting to know that you can still get a decent meal no matter what time of day it is. Also, their pies...take one home! I was on my way down to the Bay Area and remembered I had a free breakfast here. My friend will just have to pay for his own! We getr seated right away, no line and the service was fine. The interior looks similar to all the other Black Bear Diners I've been to, different but similar. I got the Bear Breakfast that came with joining their Bear Club. I got it with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, French toast and a half slab of thick cut ham. All was cooked as ordered and pretty standard, plus whatta ya want for free? My friend had the California omelet with hashbrowns bread. The omelet was good, but the bread roll was quite dry. We loved the hashbrowns, they're different than regular hashbrowns in that the potato is grated in larger strips. Always a fan of BBD. I have only ever had breakfast here but what I have had was yumsters. I usually get two over easy, no meat, tomatoes instead and a side of one sweet cream pancake I stead of toast. Not to gush over something as simple as a pancake, but, I love those pancakes. Came on a Saturday at noon as a party of 5. We were seated after a not-too-long wait. We've had some great experiences at other locations, but it was just an okay experience here. Overall, we enjoyed our food (3 orders of variations on The Grizz, 1 Volcano, & 1 kids Sprinkle Cakes). Our server was friendly & checked on us several times for additional needs, to make sure we were doing ok, and to ask to clear plates. Our waters were topped off multiple times by different people without having to ask. Pancakes were fantastic as always, & we enjoyed the bacon & sausage. Took issue with two things regarding the food. One was the ham as part of The Grizz--smaller than we remember from past orders and inconsistent between plates. Also, the grits as a side were horrible--tasteless, not smooth, dry, chalky, had crusty bits--not even redeemable with the addition of cheese & seasoning. It's not a big deal, but the garnish of lettuce & orange on a breakfast plate is so weirdly random. The big disappointment was the level of cleanliness. We sat in a large booth and the table top wasn't cleaned well, there was visible debris between the cushioning, and the connection areas between the booth and walls were pretty dirty as well. The worst was observing a staff member handling things with unclean hands which made me very uncomfortable. Still like Black Bear, but wouldn't really want to come back to this spot unless the cleanliness was improved. read more

While Black bear diners are a chain restaurants, every meal is cooked to order when that particular item is requested from a customer. The grill cook hit it out of the park! Being new to the area, I'm not sure if they taste this good everyday. But today was (as Bill and Ted would say) "most excellent" The onion rings were good too. But the burger really hit the spot. Honestly very disappointed, I would give this a one star but the aesthetic of the place is just too special for me to do that to them. The staff was really nice, but me and my friends kept finding ourselves waiting and raising our hands to get their attention for water refills. It was not a busy day by all means, but maybe it was low staffed that day. On top of this I guess I came on the wrong day? My scrambled eggs came out cold, and my protein was just lacking so much. I'd expect more for its price, but I blame myself for choosing that item knowing it'll only be three small sausages. The food is below average I tried my others friends menu items and was not impressed. Went here during a busy weekend while we were in town for the farmers market. When we first walked in, we were briefly dismissed by a young man at the front who seemed to be on a bit of a power trip. He was moving extremely fast and quoting exaggerated wait times, which was off-putting and set an awkward tone at the start. That said, everything quickly changed once Nadia took over as our server. She was absolutely amazing from the very beginning. Even though the restaurant was busy and the food took some time to come out--which was understandable--Nadia communicated with us throughout the wait and checked in often to make sure everything was running smoothly. When the food arrived, she was fast, efficient, and impressive. I was genuinely surprised by how many plates one person could carry. She was warm, welcoming, and an absolute sweetheart who made us feel right at home and completely turned the experience around. Overall, we left happy and full. Everytime we wanted something. I ordered the chicken avocado club, with no lettuce. I was given the Turkey club, with lettuce and no Avocado. And charged for the chicken one which one a dollar more. My daughter ordered the avocado toast comes with tomato . . . Nope, she got no tomato. The coffee was watered down and I had to ask for a spoon and regular cream (they only had flavored creamers out). No salt on the table, had to steal one from another table. No questions asked, this is my favorite breakfast restaurant of all time. This is because the food always delivers, the customer service is always on point and Black Bear Diner stays loyal to its credo and Bear themed style. The first time I even tried Black Bear was about 2 years ago in Davis. I remember going 3 times a week early with my girl after an internship she had early in the city. At first, it was okay and chill, but we really loved the Bear theme the establishment has. They have Bear art, Bear merchandise and Bears all over their restaurants. The Davis establishment stays close to me, and I don't think that will change. My go to is their 2 egg combo with a waffle. And a coffee But their menu expands to brunch, like sandwiches, and dinner, like pastas and steaks. I always go to their locations whenever I have a chance. I would recommend to everyone read more

Update: I heard from BBD Corporate. They will refund a little over half of the total cost. That's fair and welcome. The problem should never have happened in the first place and the local management should have been more willing to make good on the problem, but at least Corporate cares. I'm now willing to return to dine-in, but never will do take-out again. I came down with covid on the Monday of Thanksgiving week so knew that I'd not be making a traditional turkey dinner. On Thanksgiving Day my husband really wanted a traditional turkey dinner and discovered that Black Bear Diner offered holiday meals to go that could be ordered online. He couldn't decide between getting two individual turkey dinners that each came with 8 ounces of turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie slice and corn bread muffins (about $27 each), or the Family dinner that came with 2 pounds of turkey but lacked the pumpkin pie and corn bread muffins. He decided he wanted lots of turkey leftovers so bought the Family Dinner ($70 plus) He came home with the order in a huge bag and I started unpacking. One big container of stuffing, one big container of mashed potatoes, one big container of green beans, but also three small containers of pumpkin pie slices and two containers of corn bread muffin. But NO TURKEY (nor gravy, nor cranberry sauce) My husband called Black Bear to ask where the turkey was. They said maybe there was a second bag and they find one and he drives back. When he returns after the second trip, we unload the second bag. It contains 4 individual portions of green beans and four containers of individual dinners. Two of those are turkey and two are ham. I don't eat ham or any pork products! Each container also contains a scoop of stuffing and a scoop of mashed potatoes. So, very wrong again, especially the missing portions of turkey and we were very upset that they substituted ham for turkey. Then we discover the green beans have bacon, which wasn't mentioned on the holiday menu. And after all this, still no gravy (except a smattering over the turkey slices) and no cranberry sauce. An expensive mess. I called BBD the next day and spoke to the manager and told him about it all. He refunded me $19.50. (Update, credit posted to my card was only $19.15, where did that insulting figure come from?) I expected a bigger refund and expressed this. He said it was crazy busy with lots of mistakes. How is that my problem? So far the credit has not appeared on our account. We did not get what we paid for. We were long time customers but this fiasco has soured us on Black Bear Diner. read more

We were starting at our food on the kitchen counter for a while before she brought it to us. Then, I reminded her I bought orange juice. 40 minutes later, never received it, and then went to go pay. I ordered the bear's choice with sweet cream pancakes (it's a must try!), 2 thick-cut smoked bacon strips, and 2 eggs. My partner ordered the BIGFOOT and it came with a lot of food.. a big piece of country fried chicken, 3 eggs scrambled, grit (or other side options such as fruit or potatoes), and 2 biscuits. It's convenient, the staff is lovely and it's a nice cozy place to visit whether you're on your own or with company. The food options are plentiful and I almost always enjoy what I order.
