Build your own breakfast
John C.

TL;DR Came by after a run and loved that it's open late. Friendly service, cozy cabin vibe, and solid, affordable breakfast food. Great for a no-fuss meal. --- I stopped by here after a quick run around Davis and really appreciated that the place stays open pretty late. Although it was clearly a bit understaffed, I still had a great experience overall. The place has a nice woodsy, cabin feel, which is common across this chain diner. Once we were seated, our server was incredibly enthusiastic and kind. His energy genuinely made the meal more enjoyable and added a personal touch to the visit. I ordered the build-your-own breakfast with French toast, ham, and over-easy eggs. Everything was cooked well and came out exactly how I wanted. The food was great, and the prices were super affordable. What more can you ask for? I come here expecting simple, satisfying breakfast food, and that's exactly what I got. No complaints from me

Went here for late lunch, ambiance is dated, and we got a seat right away, orders was place and it took a long time getting it to our table,i ordered the santa maria tri tip and new bread pudding french toast, the beef was a bit dry,we also ordered banana cream pie which and it's good.overall,we got filled .

We stopped in for breakfast and sadly the server was working solo. One other person was clearing tables and a manager. It really felt short staffed. Plus there was a large UCD event taking place that particular day- you'd think managers would consider extra staff or back up staff in situations like that when the campus is busy it impacts downtown. Unfortunately our table had syrup on it when we were seated and had to ask for utensils - did anyone clean it before we were seated??? Food was hot and was good. Staff was still very friendly in spite of how overloaded they were that busy morning.

My family and I stopped in for a quick dinner while in the Davis area and it was empty when we arrived, but we were greeted and seated immediately. My daughter wanted steak, but they did not have a steak option on the Kid's Menu so I ordered the Less Dinner option of the Santa Maria Tri Tip and it came with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Broccoli. She ate a good chunk of it and there was still plenty to take home for lunch tomorrow - all for $10.99! My husband ordered the Western BBQ Burger with Fries and enjoyed it as well. I love the ambiance of Black Bear Diner - they offer huge portions and there is something for everyone. You're never blown away by their food, but it's comforting to know that you can still get a decent meal no matter what time of day it is. Also, their pies...take one home! They're always calling my name when we visit. Staff were friendly, but Kylie (I believe that's how he spelt his name) went above and beyond - super attentive and just on it! We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area!

I was on my way down to the Bay Area and remembered I had a free breakfast here. My friend will just have to pay for his own! We getr seated right away, no line and the service was fine. The interior looks similar to all the other Black Bear Diners I've been to, different but similar. I got the Bear Breakfast that came with joining their Bear Club. I got it with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, French toast and a half slab of thick cut ham. All was cooked as ordered and pretty standard, plus whatta ya want for free? My friend had the California omelet with hashbrowns bread. The omelet was good, but the bread roll was quite dry. We loved the hashbrowns, they're different than regular hashbrowns in that the potato is grated in larger strips. I guess I'd come back here, maybe not so much for breakfast, but the patty Melt has been real good.

Server was not very friendly but maybe she was having a hard day? Food was tasty. Fries were good. Verdict on Chicken tenders were split between too hard or just crispy enough

I was in the neighborhood and ordered to go. I ordered the Bears Choice with pancakes, eggs and sausage. The pancakes were light, sweet and fluffy. Just how I like them. Online order was quick and fast. The place looks really nice and clean.

This is one of my favorite Black Bear Diners in the chain, and I always eat here when staying at the Best Western next door. Service is always good, staff are attentive. Good food too for a Black Bear, whatever they do at this location should be replicated to others where the service is not as good.

Bacon & Cheddar Burger with Onion Rings

While looking for an alternative to boring old fast food, I stumbled into what I can only say was the best tasting hamburger that I've had in a long time. While Black bear diners are a chain restaurants, every meal is cooked to order when that particular item is requested from a customer. The grill cook hit it out of the park! Being new to the area, I'm not sure if they taste this good everyday. But today was (as Bill and Ted would say) "most excellent" The onion rings were good too. But the burger really hit the spot. I highly recommend it to anyone who visits Davis California to stop in and give it a try.

The Grizz (with hashbrowns & scrambled eggs)
Alma S.

Came on a Saturday at noon as a party of 5. We were seated after a not-too-long wait. We've had some great experiences at other locations, but it was just an okay experience here. Overall, we enjoyed our food (3 orders of variations on The Grizz, 1 Volcano, & 1 kids Sprinkle Cakes). Our server was friendly & checked on us several times for additional needs, to make sure we were doing ok, and to ask to clear plates. Our waters were topped off multiple times by different people without having to ask. Pancakes were fantastic as always, & we enjoyed the bacon & sausage. Took issue with two things regarding the food. One was the ham as part of The Grizz--smaller than we remember from past orders and inconsistent between plates. Also, the grits as a side were horrible--tasteless, not smooth, dry, chalky, had crusty bits--not even redeemable with the addition of cheese & seasoning. It's not a big deal, but the garnish of lettuce & orange on a breakfast plate is so weirdly random. The big disappointment was the level of cleanliness. We sat in a large booth and the table top wasn't cleaned well, there was visible debris between the cushioning, and the connection areas between the booth and walls were pretty dirty as well. The worst was observing a staff member handling things with unclean hands which made me very uncomfortable. Still like Black Bear, but wouldn't really want to come back to this spot unless the cleanliness was improved.

If you know, it is already incredibly hard taking an autistic child to a restaurant. The manager thought it was ok to tell my 13 year old to put on my autistic son's shoes..... (why not ask me, the mom?) As my son is screaming and heaving a full meltdown over shoes now, the manager continues to apologize because there were possibly glass shards on the ground in his restaurant. If that is the case, maybe someone else should be notified as that is a serious safety hazard and my son would get cut anyway as he has sandals that expose his feet, as did my daughter. I will never eat here and will make sure to let all my friends with and without kids with disabilities to never eat here. What an unacceptable excuse this place made me and my family feel. I don't eat pork and the ingredients included bacon but they said they could make it without the bacon for me even though the contest is still going on. It was a turkey burger with brie cheese, arugula, cranberry sauce and a savory herb mayo. It was phenomenal. I want to return soon to try last year's entry that won the challenge, their Tommy's Turkey Banh Mi. My husband stuck with his favorite Swiss 'N' Shroomer Burger. My wife used the restroom while I waited near the entrance. Once we both walked in the manager (around 6'2", beard), from behind the counter told us very abruptly: "If you want to order anything it has to be to go, because we close in 10 minutes. If you want fries, order them now because they take 10 minutes to make." The way this was communicated was not professional or welcoming--it came across as rude and dismissive. There was no greeting, just a sharp directive. Despite this, we went ahead and placed a to‑go order for a tri‑tip sandwich and a Greek salad and paid. I completely understand that businesses have closing times and need to clean and wrap up for the night. That's reasonable. What's not reasonable is speaking to long‑time customers, or any customer, in such an unkind, abrupt manner. A little courtesy goes a long way. Because of this experience, we won't be returning. There are plenty of other local options in Davis that will take our money, while valueing and respecting their customers, regardless of when they walk through the door.
