Heard from a reliable source that the Yelp "Elite" squad recently had a little get-together here and racked up a $4,200 bill, then tipped an impressive $125. Great job, guys! You must really like the place. That said, I've been here a few times now and haven't been disappointed. I'm a fan of the popular Duck Duck Goose pizza, although I prefer to get a more traditional pizza as well since the duck with the egg can be pretty sweet... it's good to split with friends. As for beer, there are a couple dozen taps at the bar with local and national brews, so lots of good stuff to pair with pizza and whatever you get on the side. Plenty of seating indoors and out. Parking is not that great, but only because people don't use common sense when choosing spaces in the gravel lot. If everyone leaves six feet on either side of their Mercedes SUV, obviously there are going to be space issues. Just park further up Clipper, unless it really pains you that much to walk a block. read more

I recently moved to Baltimore and asked a colleague where I should go for a nice meal out by myself! (What a loser!) This place will not disappoint! Really great liquor menu and the food is high quality! It is definitely a smaller menu than most places but I'm sure anything you get will be amazing! Great place for a new food adventure! read more

I've been here one other time for a Yelp event and it was a great time, but coming for an actual dinner was disappointing. I would like to give this place four stars, but I can't mainly because of the service. We came here on a Saturday night and I thought the service was kinda lackluster and slow. Coming to a restaurant of this standard, I expect decent, personable service. We started out with the meatballs to share and they were excellent. Probably the best meatballs I've ever tasted. I ordered a cocktail - old fashioned - it was very well made. We both ordered pasta dishes for dinner. Tagliatelle & English Pea Gnocchi. I thought they were both well flavored, but I had a problem with the gnocchi. I thought the pieces were a bit too large and a bit too doughy for my liking. Maybe that's just how its supposed to be? I don't know. Other than that, the sauce and everything else was delicious. I think I will return because there were so many other things on the menu I would like to try. read more

I've been here several times now. I don't know if it's a casual fancy place or a fancy casual place, but either way, it's just fine by me. The food is solid, the staff is helpful, and I like the building and ambiance. I like the pizza crust a good bit. It's crunchy, thin, and salty dough. I appreciate their beer selection. Can't ask for much else. read more

Yep... this is a five star joint for me. Food - everything has been 8 out of 10 or better. I'll leave it at that rather than go dish by dish. I'm critical about ingredients, prep, the cook on the food, seasoning, and presentation. They've continued to deliver both for myself and my friends as we've visited. Atmosphere - two "arenas" to enjoy. The bar is buzzing but somehow not too noisy to enjoy. Some of the bartenders are mixologists for sure. We've had some great creations here. The dining area is quieter, but still lively enough that a hearty laugh won't make anyone look over at you. And you don't have to yell at your company. They've got lots to offer on the menu, as well as a very diverse drink selection. I'd have a hard time believing there's not something for everyone here. One of my best reviews yet of a place. read more

A great experience this past Saturday night. The place was really buzzing. We tried a number of different items, and everything was fresh and delicious. In particular, we all loved the roasted Brussels sprouts, the zuppa di pesce, and the duck pizza. Also, the pickled radish on the charcuterie board was outstanding. Our server Anna was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and the service in general was attentive without being pushy. Looking forward to many more great experiences at Birroteca! read more

Great food! The Chopped Kale Salad was a great blend of flavors and the Meatball Burchetta was huge and SO tasty! Everything we had was great. So glad to see Birroteca take over a location that I never thought was going to have a winning restaurant! What a great addition to Hampden. Love what they've done with the outside of the building too. Can't wait to go back! read more

I am writing this, and rating it at a 5, because of the polenta with eggplant sauce appetizer. Listen. It was amazing. Every bite, I could not understand how it such deliciousness was possible. The smoked eggplant sauce should go down in the books as a culinary phenomenon. Holy crap. Meanwhile, the roasted veggie pizza was well-made, but not very high on the flavor intensity scale. The polenta was a hard act to follow. That's what I ordered as a vegetarian. The waitress was also very nice and well informed. Definitely a nice restaurant to go to that won't break the bank ($35 for two), with an atmosphere that encourages conversation. read more

Hard to figure out the hostess situation.. When we finally flagged someone down, had to wait for 30 min even though we made a reservation. Plus side: did enjoy the pizza, great service, and beer selection. Oh and you can draw on the table. read more

One word; Parking. It's astounded me how previous carnations, in the same space, failed to take root. When you we the only place in town with parking how can you fail? Well the previous inhabitants were just plain awful, that's how. Birtoteca however. Is pretty darn good. Their wild boat bolognese is highly overrated, in my opinion, but their little fried cheese and rice ball appetizers are the bomb. They're pizza is really good, though short of great, and they have all the those craft beers the kids are just crazy about! This place is a big bunch of What's not to like? read more

Not the first time I've been to Birroteca, but I can say this was the best time thanks to Griffin behind the bar! Make sure you sit at the bar and order endless amounts of pizza, pasta and octopus! read more

So after reading mixed reviews i decided to give this place a go. Yeah its in an obscure location but whatever if you cant venture out of your comfort zone then its on you. So dinner was packed for a Sunday and we were seated promptly, i had reservations. A couple of observations, service was a tad bit slow but not too bad, the price of the pizza's are up there. I am talking about $16-$19 a pie, now that is pricey. I understand the uniqueness of it but come on. My whole point of going to Birroteca was to compare and contrast with Hersh's, Iggies et al since i like that style of pizza. I ordered the meatball pizza though it wasnt too bad, the wasnt a lot of meatballs on the pizza. The crust wasnt too bad either, its not bad, but its no Hersh's thats for sure. I will go there again but hard for me to justify spending that kinda dough (no pun intended) regularly. My friends paparadelle also wasn't that good according to her. read more

Serving up delicious pizza, although I'm sure they offer other foods, and offering a fine wine selection! I enjoyed Birroteca once and I'm sure I'll be back again read more

Great find! The place has a great atmosphere, good food and great staff. We had had early reservation (I recommend a reservation) and by the time we left, the place was packed. Service was great and staff were attentive. We ordered the flight (Evolution) which was nice. I was not a fan of the beer itself, but it was local craft so it was worth it. The beer menu is quite extensive, so there is plenty to choose from. The zucchini fries were great with pepper aioli (the order is quite large so bring friends!) Arugula salad was yummy and the pasta was also very good. It was our anniversary, so they brought out some champagne for us which was great. We also had a de-lish dessert... puff pastry filled with bananas foster ice cream with warm chocolate syrup on the side (scrape it off the plate good) Birroteca adds their own flair by laying a piece of large white paper on each table. In addition, a glass of pencils. If a customer draws something awesome that stands out, they will frame it and hang it around the restaurant. Pretty neat! read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review of this place before it.! I absolutely love it. They always have great events and fresh local seasonal beers on tap and give away beer glasses. We just went to the spring fling where they roasted a whole hog and it was incredible. Rumor is they will have a similar event in June so stay tuned. Food has always been excellent. Don't think I have anything here I don't like. Great salads. Great cheese selections and served with house made pickles. Pizzas are all great personally love the sausage one. Also the plain one ... actually all of them ! The pastas are great and I especially love the bolognese they have. Great bartenders and staff. Great bar atmosphere and then also nice restaurant atmosphere. For dates, groups, girls nights or guys nights it is perfect read more

I came here for a college alumni happy hour and I thought it was a pretty good restaurant...but maybe not my favorite for happy hour. The group I was with split the calamari (which was pretty good!), the cheese platter (fantastic, but I wish our server would have taken the time to point out what was what), and the prosciutto pizza (WONDERFUL). All of the food was great and the service was decent, but I thought the restaurant's location was a little odd and the food and drinks were overpriced for what I got. Not to mention, the happy hour beers tasted kind of flat! I would go again for food, but not select it over similar Italian and pizza places. read more

My first trip to Birroteca was for a small gathering to talk all things Serial. This place wasn't a good choice. It's kinda cavernous so makes it too loud for normal conversation. I had a couple of glasses of wine that were priced will and very good. I also has the mushroom pizza which was just ok. Lots of dough and very little cheese and mushrooms. This would have been way better as a more flat bread than an actual pizza. My group loved the brussel sprouts so much we ordered them 3 times in this one meal. read more

Very good place with an excellent beer selection and food that is very good. We had a sampling of appetizers and pizzas. I will admit that the pizza was really good. If I were to return (I'm from out of town) I would definitely get the pizza. Try the beer flights. Glasses on the flights are larger than normal and the selections are great. I can't remember the stout that I had, but it was possibly the best I've ever had. read more

The food here is delicious, the outsoor space is spacious and comfortable, they have a wicked happy hour, and most important, the staff is consistently friendly. read more

I went back to Biroteca with the husband to give it another shot. I was hoping that it would have better footing and improved execution. Overall, the meal was OK. Last time the pizzas were meh and the apps were great. This time was a total reversal. We shared the meatballs (B+, they were fine, the sauce was a little sweet), Chopped Tuscan Kale Salad (B+), Octopus Carpaccio (C), Brussel Sprouts (A-), a cheese board (A-), and an absolutely delicious pizza with sausage, hot peppers, and egg and YUM it was the winner of the evening. The wine list was fine but the wine we ordered tasted like it was poured from a day old bottle. Now that we've been twice, I know I won't be going out of my way to return. Oh well. read more

The atmosphere at Birroteca is nice & there's patio seating (the patio smells weird like trash but hey, people like to sit outside) The pizza was tasty but not amazing and it's just a little pricier here than what it's worth. Get an order of brussel sprouts for the table tho read more

Birroteca is a great place to grab a drink, eat some delicious vegetables, and pizza. The pizza here is pretty decent. The toppings can be unique (duck, duck egg, fig jam) but overall, it's pretty straight forward. Frankly, Birroteca gets a 4 star for the vegetables. I am crazy about the cauliflower dish and the crispy brussel sprouts. I don't know what sauce they use for their cauliflowers but I could eat it ALL THE TIME. The brussel spourts are always crispy and flavorful, and never too oily. Price point for pizza is a bit high. I easily dropped over 50 dollars on a take out meal. Birroteca also has a great drink list if you like to drink with your pizza and food. read more

I treated two friends for dinner one Sunday evening. I ordered a salad and margherita pizza with turkey meatballs. The pizza was quite bland and skimpy. I couldn't believe it but the meatballs were the kind you buy in the freezer section of the grocery store. They were dry, flavorless, and not the thing you would expect for a hand made pizza from a sit down establishment like Birroteca is suppose to be. I worked in the food field years ago, so I was sure that these were frozen meatballs. Given the fact that this pizza was $21.00, I could have done better with a more tasty pizza from Domino's for $7.99. read more

We sat in the bar area, but not at the bar - which had an awesome atmosphere. They had the World Cup games playing and EVERYONE was into it, which made the experience better. (There was still down time so we were able to hold a conversation without people shouting.) The waiter was very knowledgeable of their wine it's and recommended a fabulous red wine (wish I could remember the name - some blend) For apps we got the marinated olives (I am not an olive fan, but I was told they were good) and the white bean and broccoli bruschetta which was amazing! We didn't want to go with the traditional bruschetta since we were all ordering pizza. I admit I was hesitant at first, but as said it was delicious. There were three of us and we each got a separate pizza (SO MUCH LEFTOVER!) Bianco = yummy! A little in the sweet side. The Melanzana I didn't try but it looked tasty and it got good reviews. I got the Prosciutto and loved it. It could have used more cheese, but than again what couldn't? The leftovers went home with me which were inhaled by my me and my boyfriend for lunch the following day. I didn't think I could possibly eat any more, but the girls wanted dessert. And how could I possibly say no? I wish I could remember what they were (we got two to share) - needless to day they were delectable. I will be back and cannot wait to try more items on the menu!!! read more

I go to Birroteca...a lot...so I'm a bit biased...because I haven't had one bad experience there at all. Their pizzas are great. My girlfriend and I normally get the Double D. In fact, we almost always just get the Double D because she likes it so much. Then I put my foot down and said we would try something else. She was afraid nothing else would be as good. She was pleased to find herself wrong. The spicy shrimp (or whatever it's called) and the Duck, Duck, Goose! were partiularly good...but pizza is just the beginning! I highly recommend you give the appetizers, particularly the chick peas, or the polenta (best polenta I have ever had!) a try. The desserts are also wonderful. I like this PB&J...thingy...that was served in a mason jar. However, the absolute best is the sea salt and olive oil ice cream. It is the perfect end to any meal. Really. Add to all of this an amazing beer selection, and quality, artisan cocktails, and you have one of the best restaurants in Baltimore. The only negative? We started coming to this place when it opened. Now we have to make reservations, or aggressively hunt for seating at the bar. Still, it's worth it. read more

Went again and had a much better food experience. We had a reservation for 5 this time and still ended up at a bar high-top (and my chair had a mean wobble) which is my only knock on the night. Food wise, the pizza was vastly superior and fully cooked and we repeated the mussels that were just as good as our previous visit. Also ordered an assortment of salads (caesar, caprese and arugula) and the bruschetta with burata and "melted" tomatoes. The salads were sizable and great for sharing and the bruschetta was very much a stand out dish. The service was very attentive and cheery but I would say stick to beer as they only had one bottle of our first wine selection and why stray when the place is known for beer. read more

The two star caption "Meh. I've experienced better" captures it well. We are pizza devotees and have been looking forward to trying Birroteca after reading so many good reviews. We have been all "shame on us" for not having come sooner because we were so sure we were going to like it. But we spent most of the meal trying to figure out what everyone who had spoken so highly of the food had eaten. After our experience we were guessing it probably wasn't the pizza. The look and feel of the restaurant are super cool. A little chilly on a cold winter's day in the downstairs dining room, but not radically uncomfortable, and the setting is just so pretty with the old stone walls, the nicely set tables with white tablecloths covered in paper that you can draw on (the cup of pencils at the table is a great touch). All members of the waitstaff were friendly and professional and service went smoothly--good timing, the whole bit. Good beer list, and the sparkling pear cocktail my husband had was also delicious. The food, however, was just...lacking. We had the eggplant fries to start, and they looked fantastic. Crispy, cornmeal-covered and not the least bit greasy, with creamy eggplant on the inside. But they were sooooooo devooooooid of flavor. Bland. It seemed that neither the crust nor the eggplant had been seasoned whatsoever. We tried to amend it with help from the salt and pepper shakers on the table. We then moved on to the margherita pizza and the mushroom pizza. They looked beautiful! But they both suffered from the same blandness problem as the eggplant fries. [Sidebar on the mushroom pizza: It did not appear to have the mix of mushrooms (shitake, cremini, and portabella) listed on the menu--or maybe the shitakes and portabellas were well disguised? Or perhaps they used baby portabellas, but then why would baby portabellas be used alongside nearly indistinguishable cremini as two parts of a three-part mushroom mix? The high $18 price tag raised expectations, and with basic mushrooms, no hint of rosemary from the advertised rosemary oil, the weird, supermarket-level pizza crust, its modest size, and the lack of flavor or seasoning in general, we struggled to understand why it would command this price.] On both pizzas, the cardboard-y crust had roughly the flavor quotient of dry white toast. Since there wasn't a redeeming crust texture either, I did something that I've only done a handful of times in my life--left the crusts on my plate, uneaten. Maybe it was an off night for the kitchen? It's a possibility, but with so many other Baltimore pizza options that really deliver on flavor in a similar or better style, and for similar or better prices (Hersh's, Iggie's, Chazz, and Verde spring to mind, and JoeSquared and Homeslyce for different takes that are also good), it's hard to imagine spending money on Birroteca again just to see if that was the case. read more

Went here for a special occasion and thankfully made reservations because this place got super packed within 20 minutes of us arriving. The atmosphere was pleasant and the dining area was dimly lit which made the environment welcoming. However, the seats are extremely close to each other making it uncomfortable to get in and out of the table. The table next to us was loud and obnoxious that we couldn't hear each other talk. To top it off, the service was slow and food was average, nothing special. Would not go back. read more

I've only been here twice, but most recently for my birthday. I had the Aeprol Spritz which was light and sweet. My friend and I also split the Prosciutto Pizza, which was also really good. More of a soft thin crust rather than crispy, which works for me. I even got a free dessert because of my birthday! The Italian Kit Kat Bar tastes like a high end kit kat with chocolate mousse on top. Delicious! read more

Birroteca Baltimore - Italian Near Me - Baltimore, Maryland

9/10 times I will bring a visitor to Birroteca. The food is so phenomenal and the drink selection is on point. Wine on tap? 100% into it. The pizza is so good - it reminds me of actual Italian pizza. There are so many unique options that you'll be overwhelmed when you have to make a choice. Any and all roasted veggie dishes are excellent. If you dine here in the fall, there's an amazing pumpkin cider that I haven't had the privilege of finding anywhere else: Doc's Draft Pumpkin Hard Apple Cider. If you have the chance to try it, I highly recommend! Service is good and the atmosphere is great for meeting up with friends. The bar is at the center of the restaurant - surrounded by high chairs around a high countertop (like almost awkwardly high), but it adds character to the place. read more

I'm actually surprised by some of the recent bad reviews! Yeah, a bit difficult to get a reservation. We went on a weeknight (Wednesday or Thursday) so you would expect availability but we could only get in at 5:15pm. The kale salad was really good - I'm a huge fan of kale in general and there was plenty to share between two of us. The pizza was crispy and delicious - I have no complaints! We were pleased that we were able to get outdoor seating on a nice sunny evening as well. read more

Went for my bday recently and had a reservation for 14 people. We had 2 high tops in the bar area which worked out great. Service was awesome and the beer selection was great! Underwhelming - seats were way too close on the 2 person seating side, but we're social so no worries. Service was VERY slow to arrive and also slow to check in throughout the evening. We were high rolling (never get a date night - kids we're at grandmas) but maybe my outfit didn't announce that we have money cuz we were treated less than stellar (really felt not important in a way that was NOT very Baltimore) - got two appetizers: octopus was horribly salty, but we don't complain. Still, the wait person saw we were not eating it as much as the charcuterie plate (delicious, but not enough pickled veggies and those they had were sub-par, like 3 months pickled MAYBE - meats OK, cheeses AWESOME) but the wait person mentioned that others had complained about the saltiness of the octopi. At first we didn't send it back, but decided to do so after our chat. Weird part is she came back with this whole story about how octopus are naturally salty. I honestly do not care - maybe if you stopped by before both glasses were empty for 10 minutes (every time - 3 drinks) the banter would be valued. Greek Pizza was "meh." Service sucked. We would've gone for desert but they dropped the ball too many times during dinner. Back to Woodberry, next time (which was my choice but my wife wanted to try this spot - never again). Tip was still 20%+ cuz thats how we roll. Don't get it twisted - not deserved. 3 stars means decent ... I'm being nice. read more

Excellent for happy hour and apps. Although my 2 girlfriends and I didn't do dinner here, I would love to come back and try a more substantial meal. They have daily specials like boar bolognese or whole duck! We sat at the bar, which had a relaxed atmosphere and a mixed crowd - some suits, some younger couples (it was "Galentine's Day"). Drinks: Pretty good local brew selection without being overwhelming. We ordered beers - Union's Balt Alt, Burley Oak's Just the Tip, and some banana beer concoction that wasn't half bad. Food: Amazing! We shared a meat and cheese platter. I loved picking our cheeses from the chalkboard at the back of the bar, and we asked the bartender to decide on the meats. These came out thinly sliced and paired with a delicious mustard and bread. We also had roasted beets, which came in two varieties - an excellent small plate. The mussels were probably the stars of the show - they were served in a classic broth and we had the distinct impression that they had been grilled. Yum! Overall, definitely recommend this place for a relaxed but chic happy hour or a casual first date (if you stick to the bar). read more

Ate there for dinner on 06/02/13. First time there. Meh... The dining room is a bit fussy and upscale for a microbrew and pizza place. Service was good. The bruschetta (prosciutto, parmesan and arugula) was nothing special. My table-mates loved the calamari. Personally, I wasn't a fan. We shared two pizzas and the family size spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Pizza #1 - Artichoke - good. Pizza #2 - italian sausage - ok. The spaghetti and meatballs... BLECH!! I think we got the can of Chef Boyardee they had opened in the back. There was no flavor, noodles were overcooked, the meatballs were stingy and tasteless. My recommendation? For great hand tossed pizza, make the trip down to Pacci's in Silver Spring, MD. Amazing. Skip this place. read more

Great place to have a nice but casual meal. My boyfriend and I came in for our date night and had a wonderful time! We sat at the bar and started with the pork belly, mussels, and an arugula salad. The pork belly and mussels were delicious but I could've passed on the arugula salad, especially for the price. The dressing on it was way too astringent and bitter. For our main entree we had the Duck Duck Goose pizza. It was pretty good although I could've done without the duck egg. I felt like it wasn't cooked through enough. I am all for a runny egg but the membrane was still slimy. Now for the service. Both of our bartenders were very nice but one of them got off before we were done. The one who stayed behind was phenomenal. I should've asked her name but she had blonde hair, bangs, and a nose ring. She was so sweet and friendly, but not overly talkative and annoying. I am a bartender and I hate to admit it, but I judge really hard when it comes to proper customer service. She was attentive, friendly, and personable. Made for a really nice night out! If you're looking for yummy food and legit service you should definitely give this place a try :) read more

Everything is perfect. So much fantastic atmosphere, staff, and eats that I can't give examples. It's my main go to for anyone visiting Baltimore or any special occasion. I recommend Birroteca to every single person who asks. Fresh family style italian that you can literally taste the passion in. They cure their own meats, they make some badass drinks, they are so enthusiastic about their food. Make a reservation! They fill up quick. Once my family made a reservation for my birthday three weeks in advance. They were booked. Birroteca keeps a log of customers reservations in their system, not sure how, like name and phone number. The girl looked me up in their system, and said since we're in there often they would make room. They did. So kind. Love it. read more

This place....(small bit of drool is forming) as I fall back in my seat from foodgasm after foodgasm when I think of all the great meals and great times I've had here. Came here for pizza and maybe an appetizer. I only like Neapolitan style pizza and there's was just bad. Crust was thin but overly buttered or oiled on the edge, tomatoe sauce was bland and completely lacked any seasoning. I ordered the cauliflower app on the waitresses recommendation. It was deep fried battered and coated in an oily pesto. If you like your vegetables tortured in a deep vat of oil then smothered in more oil then you may like it. I did not. The waitress then very kindly gave us a free app of Brussel sprouts because the cauliflower didnt go over well. It came to us so overly burnt from a deep fryer I can't believe it was let out of the kitchen instead of chucked immediately. I sent a free appetizer back uneaten. The second attempt at Brussel sprouts was slightly better but still tasting like a vegetable drowned in deep fryer oil. Our waitress was great but unfortunately the food just sucked. read more
