I've been coming here for a s long as I can remember and I can't figure why I've never reviewed it until now. Billy's is like a home away from home. It's on my dog's must go list. It has a great deck with a ton of seating, sun cover, fans, and a TV. They are also cool enough to supply water bowl for visiting pups! They have a great HH from 2-7 and an ever better Happiest Hour from 4-5! $1.50 Domestic Pints! $2.00 Mid Pints! $2.75 Premium Pints! They have a great selection of beers. The food is nothing to be ignored, either... BEST CHILI CHEESE FRIES!!! Ever! The burgers and wings are no joke either. Vegheads, fret not! They have a large selection of veggie friendly options. This place is great, and I mean really great. If you go between 4 and 5 you can get a great pint for 2 bucks or less. And it isn't just Lone Star or Shiner that is priced well it is everything! The okra was really good and next time I will try the fried green tomatoes. I heard that the burgers are good too. The regulars are friendly and the owner was great! My local bar! They are terrible for my commitment to healthy food but fantastic for drowning sorrows or celebrating birthdays with friends. They have a kitchen that is open late (usually closes an hour before closing time) and serves up a gigantic tasty vegetarian menu as well as stuff for meat eaters like myself. I'd recommend their burgers with fried green tomatoes or fried okra - LA Jay in particular and get the wheat bun! The beers rotate frequently (something new about each month) and it's a chill, seat yourself, clean up after yourself kind of place. I try to avoid trivia night (8pm Wed), it's impossible to find a seat then. For those also with low tolerance, these guys do half pours. So much love for Billy's! read more

This is my place. 1.8 miles from my house. Burgers are good and they have food for a vegetarian too! Beer is always cold. Service is friendly. It's a little dive burger and beer bar with charm. What more could you ask for? It's a meet up after work on a weekday joint. It's a watch the game together joint. It's a just wanna eat fried food a chill with a beer type of place. It's not fancy. This is a nice neighborhood bar with a good selection of beer and food. As basic as it sounds, the basket of french fries was my favorite. They are mildly spiced and go well with the beers. I used to go here occasionally for the trivia nights. The bar is divided into rooms/sections. One of them has a pool table and dart boards. There is sufficient patio seating as well. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for lunch. I've had 2 different burgers there on several occasions. The "Ends" Burger and The "Cobra" Burger. The Cobra Burger is not "on the menu", but on a "life preserver chalkboard" to the right of the bar near the water and tea. If you don't pay attention, you might miss it. I ordered the 1/3 lb. version. It comes with cheddar, bacon and grilled jalapeños. Pretty much the standard order when trying new places...well, except for the "grilled" part. Anyway, this burger is AWESOME! Juicy, cheddary, spicy. The bread is soft and tasty. Fries have a little seasoning on them that is tasty as well. You can sub a few other items, but I haven't done that yet. The other burger I've had (and will again) is The "Ends" Burger. Their description: "Named for our favorite Austin punk rock band, this one's served with fire sauce, bleu cheese, and attitude." It actually may be better than The Cobra. I'm just sayin'. This burger comes pretty close to Casino El Camino's Buffalo Burger, flavor-wise. A little smaller and not quite as HOT!!!! Don't get me wrong, it's HOT, just not AS hot. I love Billy's. It's a total dive bar, but it's really friendly, has a surprisingly good beer selection (better than most fancy places), good greasy food, and pretty ridiculous pricing. Their happy hour (M-F 4-5) and all day on Wednesday nearly all of their pints are $2.75. With good beers on tap, it's just hard to beat that. Billy's is a dive bar, but a great one. There's well-worn tables and the physical bar has character. The place is festooned with random beer and sports paraphernalia that's clearly seen the years. That being said, it feels cozy, friendly and warm. There's a nice deck outside which is surprisingly nice given that it sits less than 100 feet from Burnet. On a nice Austin night, there's little better than sitting out on a deck and eating a good burger while drinking good beer. The beer selection is really good here. They get everything from the local standbys like Live Oak's hef and 512's pecan porter, but also more exotic stuff like New Belgium's coconut curry hef and early tastes of 512's barrel-aged double pecan porter. There's always something for even the most discerning beer snob. The food is good. I'd put the "Cobra" and "The Ends" burgers near the top of my list for Austin burgers and the fries are great. I've also had the chili and it's much better than you'd expect from bar food. If I'm coming here, I try to make sure I can eat a meal, which is saying a lot for a bar. I just wanted to leave off saying that this has to be the best food and beer deal in Austin. During happy hour (weekdays 4-5) and all day on Wednesday, essentially all of their pints are $2.75. That's pretty insane. I come here on Wednesdays for the trivia almost because fo that. The food is also priced really well. Burgers run about $7-8 for a quarter-pound and $8-10 for a third-pound burger. It's pretty easy to come and have two people's food and drink tab come to less than $30 for two people with. read more

Great beer selection. They'll often have something on tap that I'm actually excited about. Recently it was the Yellow Rose IPA. Friendly service and friendly clientele. Decent number of TVs to watch a football game or two. The burgers are DELICIOUS. So many possibilities. Done so well. (Not well done, unless you ask, I suppose, but who would DO that?) Like my intrepid Community Leader, I am a huge fan of dive bars, and Billy's is an unapologetic dive. If you start off by being a dive bar with vintage arcade games, a pool table, lots o' craft brews and a vegetarian chili dog, you're probably gonna get at least four stars out of me. If I'm already several IPAs in when I get there and your bar food is an appreciable cut above average, well, I just might want to move in. Billy's has a classic "neighborhood bar" feel, and that is the kind of feel that I like the most. If old people belly up at your bar, you're probably okay in my book. Since half the bar on my Thursday visit was populated by septuagenarians, I knew that I was in a place where old drunks come to die: like the middle porridge, it was just right. Big, old, round wooden tables encourage groups. A nice selection of about 30 craft brews with happy hour, pint night and pitcher discounts keep 'em flowing, and the fact that the place was last remodeled during the Carter administration allows even the regular prices to be wholly tolerable. There's the Austin-standard patio for warm weather months. All this would be enough to make Billy's a Crown & Anchor category keeper, but the bar food is actually pretty good. Oh, it's not Gourmand's good (no other bar food anywhere, ever is), but the fried pickle spears actually had a spicy and interesting enough batter to make them something more than alco-shield. And really, how many cities have enough vegetarian townies to get a veggie dog with homemade veggie chili onto the menu? So, if you like beer bars, good company, and all manner of side diversions, Billy's is a place that you'll want to check out. It might be closer to four stars if you're not an enthusiast of the dive bar category, but, Lord help me, I so am. read more

Billy's remains my go-to local pub. The food is excellent and the beer selection is large, unique and rotates frequently. They offer loads of vegetarian options - my favorites are still the Avocado Reuben and the Veggie Chili Cheese Dog - and my gf swears by the chili cheese dog. And they have good specials everyday of the week; Texas Tuesday is great with $2.75 for trying new Texas beers, and Wednesday any pint for $2.75. ALL DAY. Weds night is Geeks Who Drink pub quiz night and from 7-10 or 11 I avoid the place like the plague. I'm sure pub quiz is fine, but don't go there and try to hold a conversation there on quiz night. You go to a bar to hang with friends and socialize. You'll get some nasty looks and comments for talking during their quiz. It's a bar, get over it. Billy's is a haven for sports fans, especially Packers fans, but people that don't like the sports me, are not alienated. It's one of the few places in Austin where a non-football fan can hang where people are watching football. I used to rate Billy's a 4, bordering on 5 because they had a jukebox with a great selection of punk, metal and country. However, the jukebox was replaced by one of those online jukeboxes that has an awful selection of shitty pop and classic rock tunes. The selection of punk rock and metal is little to none, and the country is mostly new country. And when there is no music cued up it plays 50s and 60s doo wop, blues and early rock. Plus, it's 50 cents to a dollar per song. The new jukebox has really ruined the experience. It's so bad I have to take away a star Overall, though, still a really great local bar with some really friendly bartenders. read more

If you've read my reviews you know I like businesses that are exactly what they purport to be. Like Billy's. This is a neighborhood bar with an emphasis on the neighborhood. A local watering hole where people stop off after shopping to meet their friends, or more likely to have a beer after work. You walk up to the register, order, pay and pick up your drink, and leave a food order if you want. The kitchen quickly puts out good pub food and you'll be called over the load speaker. Yes, it's tiny, but there's room for pool, table shuffleboard and pinballs. And tables. Lots of tables for the space for people to sit and visit. And that's what you do here: catch up with friends, say hello, shoot the breeze, heck, you can even enjoy the newspaper and read undisturbed at one of a handful of bar stools. A nice deck with ample seating is outside when the weather cooperates. Some tv screens keep you up with the news or sports, but these are background only. You won't see a lot of crazy behavior or obnoxious people here: the locals keep it nice and apparently Billy (like me) likes to call it a night early - the place closes at ten. You may not want to drive across town for your local pub, but if you're in Rosedale/Allandale/Hyde Park you could do a lot worse. Billy's is so u pretentious and cool I could have sworn I was back in the Bay Area the other night while sampling one of the many fine brews on tap, while Neil Young played and people clamped their arms a bit to ward off the chilly dampness. Go if you're anywhere near here, and enjoy what a simple neighborhood place was meant to be. read more

Hole in the wall, but definitely in a good way. We went on a Sunday night and there were a number of patrons there, but plenty of space for us to find a table. Food was served quick, and hot! i gotta hand it to ya, billy. i thought the draft beer selection was impressive. so impressive (for a small place) that we had a hard time deciding - but went with a pitcher of fireman's. the atmosphere is extremely casual and comfortable, and i *do* wish it were within walking distance of my house (as others have mentioned). we opted to grab a picnic table on the deck (out of respect for our fellow patrons - there was a UT game on and we intended to gab...). it was great to be out at 8pm on a cool saturday night and have no problem getting a table. i think the biggest surprise for me is the menu. there are just not many local dives that offer so many veg options. there's like a dozen things on there! they have freaking veg frito pie!!! holy cow(less)! i mean, just because someone is veg doesn't mean they don't want to cut loose once in a while. veg cuisine and frito pie do not have to be mutually exclusive. at least not at billy's. and i'm not even veg! aside: when in philly, i was practically tarred and feathered when i suggested to the philly cheesesteak guys that a veggie cheesesteak might be a nice option. "it's never been done!" they said. "no one will order that" they mocked. well, billy's has done it. they have a veggie philly cheesesteak. you have to understand the depth of my satisfaction upon seeing that on the menu. in your face, philly cheesesteak guys! i actually went with the veggie sandwich which had melted cheddar and gouda along with perfectly ripe avocado, tomato, lettuce - all grilled between slices of rye bread. it was a big fatty of a sandwich (served w chips) and definitely worth the $7+. i can't really think of one thing about billy's that wasn't darn good. i'm sure i will be back...a lot. on second thought, it's probably a good thing that billy's is not within walking distance of my house. read more

When I think to myself, "Hey, I want to go to Billy's," I want to believe I am going over to a friend's house to hang out for the evening. Then I remember I don't have friends, so I go to a bar and drown my sorrows. I've been going to Billy's for years, and it's always the same - and that is a good thing. There are a nice selection of vegan (or can easily be made vegan) food-stuffs, and there is beer. Lone Star is two bucks. They have other beers, but I don't really care about those. Billy's is one of those places with a silly crowd. Sometimes, it's filled with sport-people, and I don't understand that. Sometimes its's filled with guys dressed in black, with studs, that look like they belong is some kind of bad 80's punk band. Sometimes, families are there, with babies and stuff. I like babies. But not when I'm trying to knock back a pitcher. Really, I need space to flail my short arms around when I'm telling a story to my invisible friends or strangers, and I don't want a little tiny baby's face to get in the way of my stumpy, spazzy arms. The inside is uncomfortable to me. The patio is where it's at. In the summer, it's warm and sunny, and the picnic tables and cold beer are perfect. In the winter, the patio heaters come on, and I make sure to practically sit on one to keep warm. Happy Hour is nice and it's like 2-7pm. And then Happiest Hour is 4-5, and domestic pints are a buck fifty. What's also nice is Billy's opens at 11am, just in case you like beer for breakfast. And who doesn't? read more

Heartbroken and delusional yelpers have eaten there--at the same table. So I had to see for myself if the burgers were that good, if the fries the best ever and if the Billy's experience was one of the finest in North Central Austin . Here are my notes: Dive bar (coolness) Lots of diversity (UT caps, gray hair, bald heads, big butts, little butts, skinny jeans, and tattoos) Nasty yeasty smell of stale beer (ugh...it made me gag) Filthy dirty floor (hey, get a broom and a mop, Billy's peeps!) Great burgers (the meat was well seasoned and tasty--I did not eat the bun) Good fries (but not the best in Austin) Picnic tables outside (where you will breathe in car exhaust) Rickety round tables with hard wooden chairs inside (ouch!) Pool tables (yes!) Darts (fun!) Variety of cool game machines (something to do while waiting for your food) Over twenty beers on tap (awesome for almost everybody) No gluten free beer (WTF?) The overall experience was just okay. I would like to enjoy my food comfortably without the gawd awful stale beer smell. It would be nice to have wait staff to cover both inside and outside. When I was having lunch Wednesday at Billy's on Burnet, I felt exactly the same way I feel when I'm reading most reviews on Yelp: I looked forward to it, I wanted to be impressed by new places and new faces, and I wound up thinking, "Okay." Yeah, yeah, it's just not reasonable to expect to be wowed by every review or cheeseburger you come across. Well gosh, your Honor, where does it say that, exactly? But you gotta give me something--humor, breadth, depth, personality, a relationship story, the wine list, your mom's history, puns, anything--hey, I'll fill in the gaps. Really, I want to believe: If I think you really liked that burger, I'll go out and try one. Why not? And if I don't like it, that's just a difference between you and me. Cool. But you got me to go there, you clever mofo, you... Yada, yada, chase-cutting: The $7.57 1/4 lb weekday cheeseburger special with fries & tea was okay, the place was okay, the nice counter-lady and the bar, assorted tables, video games, pool table, tv's, jukebox, and local flair were all fun and pleasant and okay. Other than the time that I had to endure dinner with a delusional yelper, I've really enjoyed my visits to Billys. There are better bars in our N. Central area (Draft House)... better restaurants (too many to name)... better sports bars (Puckers)... better decks... well, maybe not now that Brentwood Tavern closed. But there's not a better combo of all of the above. The food is good... I've tried the burgers, fries and of course the Nachos... I'd say "strong... to QUITE strong." And they have a pretty good selection of beer on tap and a great happy (and happiest) hour. Hell, you can even watch the game and play video games if that's how you roll. I am a girl that is known to enjoy a nice, juicy burger. So, when Kevin brought us here for lunch I was pretty happy. When I walked in and saw the Ms. Pac-Man machine I was close to ecstatic. When I was able to order a burger smother in blue cheese and hot sauce I was pushed over the edge. This is a little, divey burger place/bar with no frills. You order from the bartender and he tells the cook what you want. When it's ready you pick it up from the bar yourself. The food is good and the service friendly. But, since we were there at lunch time I'm not really sure how it would be to hang out here for your bar needs. However, I highly recommend it for burgers at lunchtime. read more

** The rating that I'm giving this place is purely for the trivia. Maybe that's unfair, but since I went here last night FOR the trivia I feel like my review should be ABOUT the trivia. To quote my friend "this is like playing trivia underwater". That's exactly what it was like. All night all we heard was "what mumble mumble zabatoo thumbs dattdooo from?" from the guy reading the questions. We couldn't figure out if the mic was messed up, if the speakers were messed up or if is was the guy reading the questions that was messed up. Turns out it was all of the above. We originally sat inside at a table in the backroom. There was a speaker over our heads and after my last bad trivia hearing experience elsewhere, I thought this was a good sign. Nothing. Oh, other than "what mumble mumble zabatoo thumbs dattdooo from?" over and over and over again. Halfway through we finally decided to try a table outside. Second mistake. Not only was it still hard to hear on the speakers outside, he'd be in the middle of reading a question and it's as if someone just took hold of that volume button and turned it from "4" to "1" and his voice turned into a slight whisper. Several times we went up to him to let him know and he'd just mumble something as we walked out. We have no idea what we scored in the end. No idea, really, what the hell we were doing on the last two rounds. If they can get a guy who speaks clearly, and a better PA system, I could really fall in love with this trivia because the pace and topics were right up my alley. I'll probably try this place again in the distant future, but first, I must dig the cotton out of my ears. read more

I ADORE this place! This is where I go when I want to eat and drink some good beer! This is a tiny little place that's pretty easy to miss with an awesome atmosphere. They have lots of beer on tap and incredible food! I can't not recommend any of the foods, everything I've had there has been really, really tasty! Billy, an avid Green Bay Packers fan, is always around and chit chatting with anyone and everyone that goes into his place. There's lots of tvs showing the various sporting events going on at whatever time. I watched last year's Rose Bowl there, as well as the final game of the NBA finals last year. If there's a Packer's game on, it'll be on most of the televisions with crazy fans (such as myself) cheering the team on. The only downside that I've found, however, is that they close at midnight every night, except for Saturdays, when they close at 1am. If you wanna keep drinking after they close, there's always the Draught House...which is right down the street! read more

I love pitchers. There, I've said it. Maybe its the college student in me or the perception that pitcher beer is cheaper. Billys has great pitchers, fantastic fried mushrooms (burn your face off - careful) and because the patio is so close together, you typically make a friend or three just by sitting next to folks. This is my neighborhood bar, even though I don't live in the neighborhood. They have happy hour from 5-7, and then they have happiest hour from 4-5 when anything on draft (except Chimay) is $1.50. Seriously. $1.50. Billy sat next to us and made sure we stayed warm on the patio in the frigid Austin temps. I think everyone who walked up to the establishment while we were there shouted a "Hey, Billy!" on their way in. Curious about the burgers after reading all these reviews, I had to order one. SUPAH tasty. Warning: They look a bit small because the oval shape doesn't cover the entire bun (and a scrumptious bun it is -- not the typical hamburger bun, but kind of a sweet and buttery bun instead), but they stand high rather than wide. The bacon is plentiful if you order the Shults. Get the fried okra if you're at all a fan. A basket runs you under $3, and it's FANtastic. A burger (that comes with mmm-mmm-MMM fries), a basket of okra, and (if I counted correctly) five pints of beer (and I'm talking Live Oak -- not cheap piss water) caused $23 in damage. $23! For five pints and a more-than-filling dinner! Oh! No pretentiousness, either. I repeat: I LOVE this place. read more

The bar was founded by Billy Forestter of Dog & Duck, Crown & Anchor, and Waterloo fame so when this bar opened everything was great from the get-go. It has an excellent selection of beers and wonderful food (dieters beware - the portions are big). It has a great deck that you can hang out on or if you are a sports nut then there are maybe 6 or 7 TVs inside. There is darts, pool, foosball, and pinball. It even has WiFi. Billy is always hanging out socializing with customers; he's a great guy. There are also lots of friendly locals who live back in the surrounding neighborhood that like to hang out on the deck. My favorite food items include the billy burger - an enormous 2 patty burger, the shults - the bacon cheeseburger, great wings ( I'd recommend getting them 2x; if you get them any hotter then steam will actually rise up out of your ears), and the frito pie. And don't forget to finish all that off with the apple pie with a big scoop of icecream. The food is actually so good at Billy's that they sell more food than beer. Billy's does have a Happiest Hour followed by Happy Hour; beers are cheaper during Happiest Hour than Happy Hour. My only wish is that happy hour would run a little later cause it always seems to end before I get there. During the football season, Green Bay Packer fans meetup to watch the Packers play their games. One special treat during Packer games is Billy's has great bratwursts on game day. For some reason, a couple of neighboring businesses are hostile to Billy's patrons so be careful where you park as you will get towed if you park in the wrong lot.
