Billy's is a true Austin staple from the moment you walk in. Most of the customers here are locals looking for a cold beer, some good food, chill vibes - and this place provides it all! The staff is very friendly, they have 25+ beers on tap, daily happy hour specials and a huge menu (including a long list of vegetarian friendly items!). We only stopped in for a beer and appetizer, we ordered the cheese curds, which were delicious! The only thing I wish was the basket had been more full because we gobbled those up so quickly! I should also mention this place would be perfect to watch a game, they have TVs everywhere and a nice pool table in the back. We will definitely be back! read more

Review for Billy's on Burnett TLDR: a perfectly above average dive bar For the food: I ordered Billy's "The Shults" burger. The wait time for the food was perfectly reasonable. The burger was well seasoned and well constructed. The only real complaint was the pickle on top was rather small and lackluster. The fries were fresh and crisp, and also well seasoned. For the drinks: Billy's offers a more than ample beer menu with the common stock, as well as a decent selection of local breweries. For the atmosphere: Billy's certainly fronts the image of a dive bar, and does so very well. Dimly lit, slightly crowded, and a prominent bar situated directly across the entrance all help establish the environment they want. The patio in the side is well shaded, and has much less road noise than I initially expected. The only complaint is the flies on the patio are out of control. For the value: Given the location, I can't really blame Billy's for the prices. I feel like I payed a bit more than what I would have wanted for what I got, however, that feeling isn't uncommon in Austin in general, and especially Burnet. Everything else: there's virtually no parking at Billy's, however there is some street parking within easy walking distance. And yet again, the flies on the patio are on another level. read more

It's a dark, divy beer bar with a solid food menu including many fried appetizers, from wings to okra, and myriad burger and sandwich options, even hot dogs and an entire column of veg-head choices. I myself enjoy the indulgence of a cobra burger w/fries and a fine Texas craft beer, of which there are many. The burgers are pretty darn good and the beer is cold, so what else do you need? Great place with some really delicious food! We found this on a list of best burgers in Austin so put it on our radar. My wife isn't the biggest burger lover, she has to be in a very specific mood so it surprised me when she said she wanted to go give it a try. The inside is pretty dark (it is a bar though so can't really fault them for that.) Have a small patio outside which is dog friendly. Though it is right off Burnet, the parking lot is a bit tricky and can easily be missed, especially during high traffic times. The guy behind the bar was pretty friendly, especially when we told him how we found out about the place. We went during lunch so we kept it simple. Order of cheese curds and I got the Cobra burger and my wife got a basic beacon cheese burger. First, these are by FAR my favorite cheese curds in town. The breading has a bit of a spicy kick to it that really makes them even more delicious. The burgers come with fries and a pickle spear. It was juicy and perfectly cooked. Great flavor and the Cobra burger has a good kick to it. My wife has literally been asking me to go back for the last 2 weeks so we went again today and it was all just as good as the first time. Aaron Franklin has long touted Billy's on Burnet as a superior restaurant for the best in burgers, and once again, he is correct about food. The folks at Billy's did confirm that the James Beard Award winner is a regular. The menu's, order source and pickup is at the bar. We were clearly the only "non-regulars" there that day. But, we were warmly greeted and walked through the extensive menu of burgers, sandwiches, and yes, beer options. We will definitely be backed to try many of the other options. The prices were very reasonable as fries come with the burgers. The burgers were delicious, juicy and HUGE. The burgers are served open faced. If you like to cut your sandwich in half, the basket makes this a bit difficult. The only downside, I gained a pound. There is plenty of parking, the inside is much larger than we expected, and yes, it is a classic dive. read more

I'll repeat my review from 7 years ago. It's still a great place though a bit more crowded

In the past we haven't had the greatest of experiences here but we decided to give them another try. It was a very different experience this time and one that will keep us coming back. Our bartendereress, Mikey, was the sweetest person we've met in ages. She was extremely cheerful, very accommodating, and always kept a good close eye on this. We watched her interaction with other customers as well, and she always took such good care of everyone as if she had known them for a hundred years. The food menu is quite extensive, and everything we've had in the last few trips has been really good. Good Old Pub grub! The beer selection doesn't change as often as we'd like but at least they do keep some really good local or Regional beers on tap. Would like to see a few more selections switching in and out occasionally now they were hooked. Tonight we came in we weren't really too hungry but we needed to eat something so she suggested the chicken Philly which she was able to have split for us. It was actually very very good. We will definitely be regulars here. It's amazing what a bartender can do to bring business in, our last battle experience there was a bartender who seem to have a snarky attitude, very opposite from Mikey! read more

I was very let down by my experience here. My friends raved how good this place was. I walked up to the bar and explained it was my first time here and how did it work. The two people behind the bar, a heavily tattooed dude and a middle aged lady, were less than hospitable. I forget his exact words but something along the lines of what you see is what you get. I was waiting for my friend and just wanted to get a starter while I waited. I ordered the chili cheese fries. Lady says no, we don't have that bc of the water boil issue. I said ok. I asked if they just weren't doing appetizers. She said they were only doing fried things. (Correct me if I'm wrong but fries are fried, right?) I said can I get queso and chips? - no. Mmm ok can I get a blue moon- no. I made a joke at this point bc it was awkward and like what the hell. I said I'm really striking out here. She said they had something similar and went to get it. Then this guy standing next to me orders chips and queso from the dude bartender. When the lady brought me my beer back I mentioned this and she freaked out on the dude bartender. I ruined the other guys opportunity to get queso and they made him order something else. Oops. Then I hesitantly asked if I could get frito pie. Finally I got a yes. But that yes makes no sense. I couldn't get chili cheese fries but I could get chili and cheese on Fritos? I walked away confused and put off. My friend showed up and we decided to split a burger, we didn't even want to ask the employees what they recommended because of their foul, unhelpful, annoyed attitudes. Even my friend was like what the actual F. They were straight rude. We ordered a burger. The bun was soft and that's about it. Nothing special at all. Food was a 2, service was a 0 so as much as I hate to leave reviews like these, they get an overall 1. Customer service, a smile, a friendly demeanor go a LONG way. Very disappointed by our experience for takeout tonight. My husband wanted a patty melt and I wanted a club sandwich. The online ordering and curbside pickup were easy and user friendly. The food, specifically my club was a big let down. I was expecting a traditional triple decker on toast style club. It was on a hoagie and even worse, there was a dark hair in the lettuce on my sandwich. Needless to say, lost my appetite after that, I tossed it. I went to Billy's for the first and last time on Sunday afternoon. They said they allowed dogs on their patio, so I figured I'd bring my well trained 3 year old pit/bulldog mix. Everything was great for 45 minutes. My dog met 3 other dogs and got some puppy rubs from about 5 patrons on the patio, and then everything changed in the blink of an eye. An intoxicated man holding his toy dog stepped up onto the patio and immediately zoned in on mine. His dog growled at mine while my dog whined and wagged her tail because she just wanted to meet another dog. The intoxicated man sternly asked me if she was a rescue to which I replied "no, I've had her since she was six weeks old." To which he replied "Your dog is aggressive." I told him he was aggressive and he went all in and said "if yOur dog touches my dog, I will slit it's throat." This quickly turned into a heated altercation where I knew something bad was going to happen if I stayed, so I removed myself from the situation. I went into the bar to let them know that there was a disgruntled patron out on the patio that threatened to slit my dog's throat and the bartender asked who it was. I pointed him out through the window and she said "Oh. He's a regular, that's so weird, he never acts like that....." and just shrugged. As soon as I took one step out the door, this regular of yours, Stefan, got right back in my face, chest bumping me, trying to rile me up by calling me insults and slurs. He went over the top and came out with the statement "I can't wait for you to throw the first punch, so I can sue the shit out of you." I'm a General Manager of another local restaurant and I understand the value of a regular customer, but sometimes if a regular oversteps their boundaries they need to be handled. Y'all are an establishment that's main priority is providing a safe environment for ALL of your customers, not just your regulars. Y'all could have prevented this whole situation from escalating and chose not to. I'm honestly more disappointed in your staff than I am with the situation with Stefan. Out of my four years here, this was the worst Austin experience I've ever had. You guaranteed the fact that my friend and I will never return to be a potential regular for you because we shouldn't have to question our safety. read more

This place was pleasantly empty for a Saturday night, and I so appreciated the vegetarian section on the menu. I ordered the Avocado Reuben, and although I was extremely skeptical of the mingling between the avocado and sauerkraut, it turned out to be the greasiest, trashiest, most amazing veggie sandwich I'd ever eaten. The interior was cozy with pool tables, neon signs, and a few arcade games, and I was happy to sit for an hour or so just talking with a few buddies. OMFG!!! let's just say this .... I don't drink at all and I go to this bar EVERYTIME I want a burger!!!! Until Billy's I would have maybe 2 burgers a year tips! Some of our favorites... The fried cheese curds..... Mmmmmm...so crispy, not greasy, and ohhhhh that kick!! A little spice that gets you right as you swallow. Hubs love the cobra - bacon, cheddar, grilled peppers and a spicy aioli. I go with the basic cheeseburger and sometimes even put the cheese curds right in the burger!! Fries stand up to the burger - crispy not greasy lightly seasoned. The bartender is very cool too love that he never says anything about us not ordering an alcoholic beverage. This is a good spot for trivia and food. Limited parking, so navigate yourself to Lynnwood to find a street spot. Service was really fast, even when all the trivia people arrived/ ordered all at once. If you are coming for trivia/ an event, you need to get there really early for a table. If you are coming to just hang out, double check that there is not trivia/ an event that day. A few folks walked in, saw all of the tables packed and left. Food reviews! -Veggie burger: solid patty, hefty amount of avocado. Not the most interesting veggie burger, but definitely solid. -Turkey Rueben: yum, devoured quickly -Chili cheese fries: Also yum, also devoured quickly. An excellent topping to fry ratio. -Roast beef sandwich: The person who ordered this said it was good, but wasn't going to order it again. Said it was a little too greasy/ soggy. - Fries: They are really well seasoned but they are also really unevenly cooked. One fry is perfect, the next one seemed almost raw. read more

Sometimes it is all about the ambiance. * The food and the beer at Billy's are top notch. Their basic burger is excellent. This allows them to do combos like California burgers (burger with sprouts and avocado) that would die if the burger itself couldn't carry the show. Their fried green beans (an irregular special) get my total thumbs up. Junk food for vegans - what's not to like? The Billy Beans are completely pork-y and pigs make beans taste good. Their collection of beers on draft is super. (I went with a Nitro Peanut Butter Stout and savored every drop) * So what am I whining about? The room is not a nice place to be. The outdoor patio faces Burnet - not a great view. Indoors it feels like a dive bar but without the sense of grimy challenge of a really exciting dive bar. It is not a great place to watch sports. The TV screens are small. Most are only visible from a small part of the room. The bar faces away from nearly all of the TVs so you can't sit at the bar and get your sports fix. So you find the chair that has a view of the one event you can tolerate the most, and stare at a postage stamp sized screen so you don't have to look at the rest of the scenery. * Bars are supposed to be fun - but Billy's is not fun. Good food, good drink but unless you bring amazing company with you - not especially good times. read more

First time at Billy's and surely my last. I heard the burgers were good but I don't eat burgers so I looked at the menu. They said they made a Turkey and Provolone sandwich "piled high" with turkey and cheese so I ordered that. What they did pile high were the promises, the wavy potato chips and the big sub roll that sat on top of the chip pile. Inside the roll were three thin slices of cheap store-brand tasting turkey, 1 thin slice of provolone, 1 thin slice of tomato and a few sprigs of lettuce. The only big bite taken was out of my wallet for $11. They give you packets of mustard since they can't be bothered to take the time spreading it on the roll. So if you aren't getting a burger, skip the sandwiches and the disappointment. You'd do better running down to the HEB and grabbing something more satisfying, better tasting and less of a ripoff ... read more

Holy hell...why am I leaving Austin in a week? I discovered this place my last week here as an AmeriCorps member. I went with a colleague and had a delightful experience. The front door is the most inviting thing on the exterior of the building. Parking may be difficult but making it to the door (of what seems like someone's home) is so warming. Some bar regulars were sitting silently at the bar to the left and the atmosphere was surprisingly quiet around lunch time. We were greeted by a man with a gentle voice and proceeded to order. Since it was a Monday, I started with an IPA ($3 off on Mondays!). I asked what the most popular burger was and he told me to order the Cobra. It was absolutely delicious! I substituted onion rings for fries and that was also a good decision. After another brew, I walked out paying a little over $20 for what should have been an easy $35 with tip. We attended a gathering of fine folks here Sunday and had a great time! Billy's is a gathering point of Green Bay Packer fans which is a perfect fit for the Lady and I as we are hard core Packer fans. We both had the Weizen Beer, I opted for a Cobra burger (again) with onion rings while the Lady opted for the regular cheeseburger and fries. The were cooked perfectly but a bit neutral on flavor and spice. This was quickly solved with the hot sauce I had brought along. And then Mighty Joe opened up a cake that he had brought along. Nothing fancy here but it's awesome if you're a Green Bay Packers fan. We were visiting Austin for the weekend and wanted to watch the Packers vs Cowboys. We found this place on line. Had an awesome time with all the fans and one Cowboy fan. A regular there also does a board and we got to join the fun. Unfortunately we didn't win any $$ but the Packers did. The cheese curds were just ok and so were the chips and salsa. The burgers looked awesome and so did the philly steak sandwich but we didn't try them. They were out of Leiney's. :-( read more

I found my people! I grew up in WI and would be disowned if I were not a Packers fan and Billy's is THE place to watch a Packers game. What is cool about Billy's, besides the green and gold decor: Dog friendly patio A huge vegetarian menu They have some of the best chili cheese fries in town A nice selection of Texas beers on draft The wine they serve is drinkable (not amazing but not horrible either) Cheese wedge hats are encouraged but not mandatory The indifferent: Lack of parking So packed on game days you might have to stand outside the patio You have to queue up to order drinks and food Lack of cheese curds except on game days We have been twice, once for a game and another time for dinner and drinks. I ordered the veggie chili dog with cheese. It was pretty hearty for a vegetarian option. The order came with a large veggie dog topped with beans, vegetarian chili and cheddar cheese on a thick bun. From 4-5 at Billy's, which is technically on Hancock Dr, (which I find mildly entertaining) boasts even cheaper booze than they do during regular happy hour which lasts til 7. You go here for the pitchers though, which are cheap cheap with a side of cheap. Tons of local brews, mediocre beers, and $2 Lonestars all the time. Good thing I live/work nearby and get outta there at 4:30. Count me in on any Wednesday where ALL pints are $2.75. Sure they have other drinks here, but I wouldn't suggest ever ordering wine at a place like this. For this place, I put my wine glass away, tuck the pinky in, and pull out my beer hat. Burnet Road has a lot of fantastic bars, if you weren't already aware then please keep this one the downlow - I don't need my favorite digs over run by meat heads, skinny jean wearing tools who think they look cool, or girls wearing peacock feather hair extensions. Sure, there are regulars here, old men who stare at my ass while my drinking companion continuously reminds me this which makes me all the more flustered. "I want Torchy's queso! Generic bar food - nothing special and actually priced a little high for comparable food in the surrounding area. Maybe I am mistaken and there is something going on here that I just can't grasp... which is highly likely, but considering some of the glowing reviews, I feel like Billy let me down here. My friend got The Hoss burger, it was a burger he said, a little on the dry side and wasn't anything special. I ordered the Nachos which were fine and basic. You order upfront and pay... Order your beverage etc... and then they call your name and you grab your food at the counter. The decor has a little pool table over in the corner - in a room that seriously needs some cleaning. It's a pretty simple setup, giving way to a genuinely great burger: scruffy chair and table arrangement inside, a few TVs, ample beer selections. Outside, a semi-dingy deck, benches, picnic tables. Billy's clearly seems to pride itself on the neighborhood aspect of its existence, and who would blame them? I counted somewhere in the neighborhood of a half dozen laptops open at the place, mingling near rollicking groups of friends, inside for no good reason whatsoever, save the aforementioned grub (they toast the burger buns...yum), and its likely proximity to home.
