this place is pricey but its worth going for their pastries i recently had their poppy seed and artichoke with goat cheese croissants and they were set on right on my palate. honestly i hate goat cheese all kinds of them but that goat cheese with artichoke was balanced nicely. and the poppy seed it had the perfect sweetness. and their tarts are one of a kind (eat it once in a while it is expensive but definitely a GO!) BUT the reason i give them a 3 star is because of their artisan breads. the crust was just knackering! to bite into, and the taste wasn't that great either, oh and their coffee's and teas nope its really pricey for a cup that looks like it will only hold espresso shots i can understand why the pricey pastries because they use rare or real good quality ingredients like butter (which is expensive) unlike some pastry shops that use shortening(all trans fat and leaves that clay after mouth taste) read more

I have mixed feelings about the place. I'm trying to be as fair as possible, and not put too much information about my personal experiences there. Pros : - the food is REALLY GOOD, when eaten right away - very practical to pay by card with their ipad Cons: - the croissants and pains au chocolat are good and tasty when eaten right away, but lose their freshness and taste very quickly (I've seen better). - everything is definitely overpriced (and depending on what you buy, very small portions...). It may be true that the bakers have been trained in France but there are other places where pp have the same kind of experience and they don't charge as much - The 2 waitresses that I've met there were just very unfriendly. No smile, no acknowledgement. It seems like it was just a pain for them to be there. I've been to the place more than once and their attitude was always the same, so it's not like they were having a bad day. - unpractical - there is only one plug, very close to the door... so don't go there to work. Love this place. Don't listen to Edwin M. -- if you look at his profile, the only places he gives 5 stars to are Konditori. Must be a part owner of Konditori or something. He "just moved to the neighborhood a week ago". Hm....Konditori just opened a week ago. interesting. Anyway, this is my go-to coffee and snack joint at work. It is expensive, yes, but you definitely get what you pay for. Pastries and sandwiches are absolutely delicious (took me a couple visits to figure this out, but if the display looks empty, it's because they keep pastries in the cooling racks and just the display is just for...display) and coffee is excellent. The staff is always friendly, if a little hipster-y. The atmosphere is warm and there is always a place to sit. Granted, I only go between 9 and 6 on weekdays, so I can't speak for the weekend crowd. read more

Came here for breakfast with four friends, Sunday morning 9:30 am. Pros: - good pain-au-chocolat (good because of the quality of the pastry - so rare in NYC) - good atmosphere: plain and simple decor, lots of wood, *incredible sun in the morning*! We were basking in it for almost an hour, sitting by the window. - interesting variety of baked goods, though I did not get to sample and some looked a little dubious - wasn't too hard to get a seat for five people, because most of the crowd is coming through to take out. Good, spritely morning vibe. Cons: - offensive price on the tea: $3.50 for a small tea. What? Bien Cuit is all around pretty great. The pastries and breads are fantastic. In particular, their Pain de Mie is absolutely perfect for making French toast. I do agree with other reviews that they could step up their game with the coffee, though. I've only ever ordered regular drip coffee, so I can't speak to the espresso-based drinks. read more

I work at a coffee shop that serves Bien Cuit (9th Street Espresso, shameless plug), and I have to say, these baked goods are amazing! The bread is perfectly crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside with a wonderful hint of sourdough, pair it with butter and live happily ever after. Pecan/Blue Cheese and Cheddar/Cherry/Basil scones...need I say more? Go get some! read more

Been here a few times, a favorite for after a Friday night dinner. Now I haven't had any of the breads here, but the chocolate almond croissant is delicious, the Lemon Blueberry tart is awesome and the Pistachio Cherry Chocolate tart is out of this world. I would say it's a little on the pricier side but you're getting high quality ingredients. The coffee is just ok, nothing to write home about, but it's not terrible as some other reviews suggest. read more

Although seemingly expensive, but if you consider the quality, it is well worth it. This place is unique for its taste and craftsmanship. One does not need to be an expert, just try a few more bakeries in Brooklyn to know the difference. My particular favorite is MIche bread. I cannot pass on their pineapple tarts and chocolate croissants. The people who work there are friendly efficient and knowledgeable. This place is great although the bread is a bit overcooked at times. Having said that the fresh pastries and wonderful bread brings me back home in Europe. Wonderful! HOWEVER, the staff have an attitude. When you're paying or ordering it comes across as if you 'owe them something'. Smile, be friendly and courteous to your customers. They don't need to act 'wannabe French with attitude'! I was so excited about coming here. After confusedly looking at the options, I ended up choosing the roasted grape danish (as recommended by the nice barista) and a coffee to go along with it. I came here to taste some of their pastries and had an Apple Cardamom Danish and a Poached Quince Eclair. The Danish was solid, but a little less flavorful than I expected. The Eclair, though. I don't think enough good words can be said about the eclair. The filling was not typical pastry cream, but instead Pomegranate Cremeux, which was just delicious. I can't wait to come back and try more of their pastries that are a little different from usual. I also have tasted their bread from a grocery store and it's very good, but buying a full or half loaf at this point does not make sense for me. read more

I bought a baguette on Saturday morning. It was extremely hard like a rock and I was not able to cut it by my brand new bread knife - the baguette got just broken. I had to cook French Toast. My friend bought a Pain-do-mie. She could not make a sandwich because of too hard shell and too strong yeast smell. They were pricy for that quality. When entering the shop, I smelled like a sea weed factory. It could be a natural yeast smell, but I rather wanted to smell fresh baked breads. I kind of imagine what kind of bakery the owner wants to establish, but they better know how to use the natural yeast. Then, breads will be much better. read more

This is a place I frequent. I gave three stars because the lattes and cappuccinos are a hit or miss, depending on who's making it. With espresso drinks costing six bucks with tip, the management should better train their employees so that there's a quality consistency across the board. I'm so happy that Bien Cuit opened up on Smith Street. It's a fantastic addition to the neighborhood, and you can see at a glance that baker Zachary Golper is a skilled artisan. If you read his bio, you'll see he has a fine pedigree as well in baking and pastry. But don't come in expecting lobster tails or many things you might find in other Brooklyn bakeries. The almond croissant or pain au chocolat are well worth the calories--they are extremely satisfying. I really enjoy the selection of breads, and that you can get half a loaf (it's just me and my husband so it's great not to potentially waste some wonderful bread because we don't eat it fast enough). But the last time I bought bread on a Saturday morning, the crust was nearly impossible to cut through for regular slices. I guess if I could just admit sometimes I want to serve the bread in slices and not hunks, is it blasphemy to want the place to have a slicer? But no matter, the breads are all wonderful from crust to crumb. Grab a sandwich for lunch and a tart for later and I'm sure the coffee's good, I just don't drink much so I don't know if this is good joe. I can't give this place 5 stars, only because the staff really doesn't put out a very friendly vibe. I don't know if I come in at the wrong times, or right after a really rude customer, but I hate feeling like I'm actually being inconvenient when I want to know what bread is which and when i say I'm deliberating between pastries so I need 30 more seconds. No one in my experience has been downright hostile, but the lack of friendliness and enthusiasm is clear. I just strongly believe customer service is important so I wish I could get to the bottom of that, because I'm really enthusiastic about the products here. I visited bien cuit on Saturday around 1 PM. The place was full but not packed. I came from Long Island because I am a bread enthusiast and I am always on the lookout for new bakeries. My main reason was to try their breads and pastries and bring them home for the guys to taste. I liked their pain de compagne, however, I didn't see significant difference in taste with the multi grain bread (They were both very good though). The pain au chocolat and croissant were outstanding and reminded me some bakeries when I was younger in France. I would say that in terms of the bread, I still prefer Pain D'Avignon and Balthazar. Bien Cuit is a bit better with their pain au chocolat and croissants. I can't say anything about the baguettes because they forgot to put it in my bag (though I paid for them). The reason I give this place only 3 stars is due to the service. I would even go as far as calling it arrogant. The girl behind the counter was so annoying and uninformative that I almost wanted to leave (this is becoming a Brooklyn problem not only reserved with Bien Cuit). To make a long story short, after she patronized me for asking whether they would slice one of the breads and a bunch of other stupid comments about the breads themselves (she know nothing about them besides that "this one is popular"), she forgot to add the two (paid for) baguettes to my bag. read more

The bread, however, was so hard and dense that it verged on inedible (it went in the garbage can). good morning brookly ny, i woke up this monring craving for a danish so i got dressed and headed over and i got there the first thing i noticed. Is the place looked liked it just had opened. as i entered i saw no worker for at lease a minute or two. i still waited then someone finally came and asked may i help you. like usual my order never really change so i ordered my coffee and danish to go. as i reached in my bag for my wallet i lifted my head up and notice the most disgusting thing that morning. i saw bugs crawling flying aroung everything you can imagine. so i payed for my stuff and i was gone. got to the corner and threw it in the trash. never will me nore my wife go there again. bad business. honestly i miss the old workers dont like none of the new workers like that. bad customer service but at the end of the day only can get mad at the people running that place. what ever happen to the maintenane, it use to be clean nothing like what i saw. no disrespect ill never go back there again. read more

This review is on the croissants only. We have tried at least 5 different types. One thing they all had in common is they are all over baked. Too well done. when they are so dried out they lose flavor. Bien Cuit gets very good croissants reviews. I find some times when food is pricy some people that just don't know better believe it's good. I don't mind the price if it tasted delish. Could it be I just had bad luck and bought bad batches. This was just a fine french bakery for me. I like their danish and croissant but those are too overly priced. I bought two pastries and I paid almost $9. And since I live in queens, I might not come here just to grab their croissant. Those are not that special to make me to travel down to brooklyn again....If I am around there again for some time, I might try another bakery since there are too many great bakeries to try out in brooklyn:) read more

Went in today I. The afternoon to get my caffeine fix. Long day at work. I was lured into trying this place out based on reviews and my hankering for something different than the generic coffee (which I enjoy very much) that you can find after every block. While I was there I also decided to get a pain au chocolat. First bite and I fell in love with it. Light buttery, flaky, probably the only time I like flakes and perfect amount of chocolate. Thumbs up for a croissant well done! Then why the two star rating? You may ask. The coffee. A small was way too small to begin with. But I assumed quality versus quantity. Right? The coffee at first sip was alright at best. As I walked out of the store there was stream of coffee running through my wrist. And after every sip it kept dripping until my frustrated self dumped a hot cup of coffee inside the dumpster, a first in my life. Wat a waste of a perfect afternoon and 2 US dollars. read more
