The place is located in a busy area; the staff is friendly. The place inside is tiny and smells like fresh pastry that people cook at the back, which is very tempting. I cannot speak for the pastry, but coffee is horrible. Even with added milk, I feel over-burned beans. The prices here are not budget-friendly, and for a small cup of cappuccino with an extra espresso, I paid 7$. I would not be so upset if it would be smooth, but I threw it away. We stopped by here for some brunch-y treats on Saturday morning, and wish we had known that there was nowhere to sit because we would have reconsidered going. You'll get service here, but just don't expect it with a smile. We got three goodies and drinks and then just found a bench in the shade a few block away. The brownie was nothing special, and we loved the components on the pickled green tomato danish, but the execution just wasn't right. The tomato slices should have been way thinner because when you took a bite, the whole thing collapsed on itself and the tomatoes started falling off. We did love the almond croissant, which was far and away the best item. The paste was heavenly and the shatter-to chewy ratio felt just right. Iced chai and iced coffee are fine. Our daughter's hot chocolate was the most impressive beverage since it seemed like they scooped legitimate chocolate into the milk. Overall, we weren't impressed, especially for NYC standards. Have been to this place a handful of times. They sell pastries, bread, coffee and some pre made sandwiches. The almond croissant is by far my favorite item. The pastries are delicious and flaky, however I gave this place 3 stars because of the price point. Most of the pastries are $6 and up and are not worth the price in my opinion. On one occasion, I got 3 pastries and an iced latte and the total was almost $30. There are other places in the neighborhood that charge less for the same quality. My husband and I finally satisfied our curiosity and tried their almond croissant, pear danish, and a miche bread. All three items were extraordinary. The twice-baked almond croissant was our favorite. Rich yet not too sweet, flaky, and generously apportioned with almond paste (or was it frangipane?), it was a thing of beauty in appearance and taste. Bien Cuit's almond croissant is more expensive than others in the area, but you certainly get what you pay for. The pear danish, also twice-baked, was similarly buttery and delightful. Although pricy at $16, the miche bread is hefty and gloriously textured and fermented. It easily upgrades our meals to restaurant quality. read more

Bien Cuit has some pretty impressive pastry lamination, and their coffee is pretty good too! I've stopped in here and there over the years, usually for a coffee and croissant. Today the barista was very friendly and went out of his way to ask a couple questions to make sure my coffee was the way I wanted it - a great milk to espresso ratio. I also got a croissant that had some pretty beautiful lamination. I've tried their ginger cookie which I absolutely love, and if you like ginger cookies you should definitely get this! Stopped here with my husband and had a really nice time. The breads are absolutely delicious. This is a really nice little place which is unique, a nice change from all the chain places that are popping up. My husband had a pain au chocolat, which he said was excellent, and a tea. I had a coffee and regular croissant. We were having dinner with friends later that evening so we picked up a loaf of Olive campagne, since it was something unique that we knew they would love. I have been to this pastry shop a handful of times though I unfortunately have no photos. The prices are very high and I have a strong suspicion that one of the reasons why the ratings are pretty low here is that they can't be this inconsistent if they're going to charge this much and I kind of have to agree. I wouldn't bother buying one of their overpriced breads here. Go over to court and either go to Le French Tart Deli or one of the numerous decades old Italian spots for cheaper better bread. The Salted Caramel Buckwheat Cookie texture had a nice flavor but the texture was unappetizing. Powdery in my mouth, I found it unpleasant but at least it's one of the cheaper things here. The Red Miso Pain Aux Raisins was a pretty solid raisin/raisin snail bread but I couldn't taste the miso at all which meant at $6 or $6.50 it was not worth it in the slightest. I wasn't a big fan of the Chocolate Almond Croissant either lacking the proper texture and yet again was reminded of other places just being a mile better. They do have some other very unique pastries here but I don't exactly want to play another round of Russian Roulette with their prices. read more

It's a small bakery and once you enter, you are smelling the glorious smell of baked goods. The selection is unique, with both savory and sweet options. i got a whole campagne loaf after hearing it recommended to the two parties ahead of me in line. i walked home excited to slice into the loaf, only to be disappointed when my beautiful $15 loaf turned out to be super tough. OOOOF even my largest bread knife had a hard time sawing through. the only bouncy, soft parts are the centermost 2 square inches of a slice. i sadly ended up giving up after two slices. maybeee good if you're looking for a bread to dip into soup, but if you eat your bread as toast like me idk. the bakery's ambiance was so cute thought that i'd consider returning for a different pastry-- just not the loaves. read more

Lots of choices at reasonable prices, and you have the convenient option to get only a half-loaf. 2 - pick out a sandwich to enjoy while there. I personally would opt for the Breakfast Sandwich or Turkey Croissant. Simple and tasty, despite being a bit overpriced for what you receive. Skip the salmon. 3 - eat the sandwich in their awesome garden area. It's pleasant, peaceful, and usually empty. To me, this is the key selling factor for ordering breakfast there, as the interior seating space can get tight. I probably wouldn't come to Bien Cuit only for the sake of eating, but their bread and garden make it a good spot regardless. read more

The night before I was in the mood for a well crafted, French Pastry. Once a upon a time there was a perfect spot on the Upper East Side. Francois Payard Patisserie was my go to spot any time of day, a light lunch with a glass of wine or a latte with their fabulous baked goods. It was a warm and rustic spot that just closed one day. Walking into Bien Cuit, it had the same French-Country rustic feel. There aren't wines by the glass but there are fresh baked pastries, coffee and more importantly Tartines. I see the freshly baked breads and loafs. I zero in on a beautiful looking Salmon Tartine. Made with Horse Radish Crème Fraîche, Pickled Beets and Fresh Dill on long piece of Campagne bread, it was the perfect size for my lunch. There was no wine but I had a nice latte in a large mug. I also snuck in a small chocolate thingy they were selling under glass. First time impression? I'm a fan. There's a Specullos Éclair with my name on it. ;) read more

So fun to see racks of baked breads, pastries, croissants, and cookies! I got a toasted ham & Brie croissant and honestly it was underwhelming. It took the fourth bite (on BOTH ends) to hit any ham or cheese, and when I did, the ham was a thick slab of meat which did not get heated during the warming up process. I feel like the ham should have been diced and equally distributed throughout the long croissant. Ensuring the whole croissant and each bite has some juicy ham and cheese would make the croissant more enjoyable, as opposed to the current enjoyability level of 30%. The one item I did not like from the haul I purchased was the poppy seed croissant, which for some reason was kind of tough to chew for a baked good that was purchased at 11am. This is something I'd expect at 5pm, but not 11am! Coffee - 4/5 - Strong, well-balanced, happiness in a cup served by the stone-faced employee. Tartine - 3/5 - Salmon tartine was considerably underwhelming, especially when I love salmon. Crust was incredibly hard to bite off and not recommended as a to-go item. Staff - 3/5 - Guy who picked my items was cordial and helpful, but the female at the register have a certain "je nais se qua" that I loosely believe comes off as "I don't want to be here so why don't you just tell me what you want so I can ring you up and GTFO" vibe. Space - 4/5 - Cozy, rustic, welcoming; only complaint here is I wish they make it apparent as to where the line forms. Ideally, I'd like a bakery that: 1. Is very close to my apartment. 2. Has a very welcoming and friendly staff. 3. Stocks amazing freshly baked bread and 4. Other delicious baked goods at 5. Affordable prices. Luckily for me, Bien Cuit is almost there: it covers 1, 3 & 4. Having been in only a couple times, I must say that the staff doesn't seem particularly interested in helping me out with the bread selection (or anything, really). I don't need them to be my best friend, but it would be nice not to feel like I'm intruding. That said, most recently the man behind the counter did grudgingly tell us about the Miche, which he described as a rustic sourdough. I was a bit skeptical about getting it because (1) the crust actually looked rock hard, and (2) let's be serious: $10 is just too much to pay for a loaf of bread. However, at $5 for half, I decided to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did, because this is EXCELLENT bread. No joke. It's hearty and flavorful and almost a meal in itself. You know it's good because even without butter or anything, it's still awesome. But there is the problem of the crust. Just as I suspected, it's so damn hard that I fear for my knives when I am cutting it. And my fingers, because when my knives aren't futilely scratching at the surface, they are sliding off the side. I don't really need my fingers for much, but I fear blood would ruin the flavor of the bread. If a serious crust doesn't scare you, get this Miche and make yourself some butternut squash soup; this bread is the absolute best thing to eat with it. Also, Bien Cuit's croissants are absurdly tasty, so grab one of those too. read more
