UPDATE - I just had some of my leftover apple cardamom pastry this morning and definitely got more of the apple flavor. Absolutely delicious! This review is for delivery only. After having quite a rough day yesterday, I decided to break my diet and treat myself. I ordered the apple cardamom pastry and the chocolate almond croissant. The apple cardamom had good flavor, but there was barely any apple filling inside. More like a smattering or apple essence if you will. I was slightly bummed out as it wasn't cheap, but it's OK. The star of the show and what made this all worthwhile was the chocolate almond croissant. Hands-down the best chocolate almond croissant I've ever had the pleasure of gracing my taste buds and dare I say life-changing. This croissant was perfectly crisp and flaky on the outside with a generous and satisfying amount of chocolate and almond paste filling on the inside. I come here on coffee dates with a good friend of mine. It's relatively close to both of us, so it's a great choice. Iced decaf oatmilk latte, and some pastry is my constant order. It may be a weee bit pricey, but the coffee is good, and it's a neighborhood spot. If we can pay for you know who, why not here. Serve yourself water, bus your own table...although there are people that will just leave there stuff on the table. It grinds my gears, but I digress...lol. After my Thai lunch I decided I needed coffee, my first cup of the day. I Yelped places on Franklin Avenue and Bien Cuit popped up. I have visited Bien Cuit at Grand Central Market and remembered its fabulous breads. The inside of Bien Cuit is charming and warm although I didn't smell freshly baked bread. I wanted a sweet treat with my coffee and stared at the assortment of sweet and savory. There was a nice assortment of cookies, croissants and danishes. I decided on a medium cafe au lait and chocolate chip cookie. I found a seat opposite door that leads to their garden. If it wasn't so windy I would have preferred to eat Al fresco. My coffee was prepared swiftly and I took my first sip and it was warm and soothing.. The cookie was good but I think I'm over sea salt as an ingredient in cookies. The ambiance here is calming and a nice break between a busy day. Here's the disconnect: I'm really tired of surcharges for milk varieties. Almond, soy and oat are not extravagant milk choices. Any coffee shop catering to diversity in food preferences should offer different varieties as part of your service. The customer shouldn't have to pay for that, iMO. Thus paying close to $10 for a little cup of cafe au lait and a cookie certainly isn't worth it. Added in is the 80 cent surcharge for oat milk.definitely not worth it. As for the service, like the cookie a mix of sweet and salty. The three stars are really for the charming atmosphere. Franklin Avenue, I'm probably sounding like a broken record, has a wealth of coffee places that are a bit better than this. read more

I don't usually hang around this neighborhood since I'm from the other side of Brooklyn but I didn't realize how gentrified it was until I ate there. I will tell you that this place pulled me when I was walking by with its big flyer of their blackberry chamomile mousse cake. I went in and realized that ir was fancy because this piece of pastry was $11. I am rating this bakery based on the pastry and the service of the cashier. The pastry was a nice blend of sweet and tart. I believe the hint of chamomile at the end of a bite balances it out. As delicious as it was, I can get pastries of the same size in Bensonhurst for more than half the price. The cashier who attended me was nice and answered my questions about the ingredients of the pastry. There wasn't a variety of choices on baked goods but the place was very clean. It did satisfy my sweet craving since I just had been forced to go to a vegan only restaurant that was basically just vegetables for a work volunteer event. So I'm glad I across it right after lunch. read more

This spot is super cute but pricey! I'm a fan of their almond croissant and their chocolate almond croissant--lots of filling that isn't overly sweet and without any almond extract, and it's double baked so it's nice and crispy! It's great heated in a toaster oven (what can I say, I'm a sucker for toasted, warm croissants). They're very rich though, so I just tend to eat half at a time. Theirs are definitely one of my favorites in the city. The apple cardamom danish was sweeter but I thought the pastry was dry. I'm not the biggest fan of their roules--I found them somewhat dry and not very buttery. Cookies are decent, including the oatmeal cranberry one! I know they're known for their bread so maybe I'll try that next time! Wish the prices were a little lower though--this is definitely a treat yo'self type of spot. read more

There are so many coffee shops on Franklin Street but this one is a cut above the others... 1. The pleasant and smiley gentleman working on weekday mornings! 2. I asked for assistance and while the gentleman working gave me some tips about which bread to get, I wouldn't say it was the friendliest customer service. I wish I remembered what bread I got, but I was very happy with what it was. I had the chocolate almond croissant here, and holy fuck, it's so unbelievably good. It looked alright and I wasn't expecting much tbh,but it hits on every single note just right. The pastry is flaky, buttery, and decadent in all the right ways, the chocolate is good, and the almond filling is delicious but not too sweet. Usually, my hangup about "Pain Au Chocolat" is that they just put one sliver of chocolate in the pastry, and that's it, and it always kind of feels a little lackluster overall? But here, the bites that don't have the chocolate have the almond filling in them, and like my gurl Hanna Montana said, it's the best of both worlds LOL. This pastry can be a lot so it's probably a "treat yourself" kind of thing every once and a while but damn, is it good. I haven't gotten to try their other items but I can say this is very good. When it comes to buttery flaky delicate and purely delicious croissants this place delivers. I think this has to be the best croissant I've ever had. The buttery soft fluffy pillow like texture is everything crossaint dreams are made of. They have an open window storefront where they begin working very early in the AM, and you can watch them make everything from scratch. This place is not it. With so many better options within a two/three block radius - why go here for expensive, semi-burned food? Reasons to actually not go here: - Prices are about double of others on Franklin Ave - The baked goods all sort of taste the same, and are definitely under-proofed and over-baked - Been told by 2 different employees that they throw away everything at the end of the day (rather than donate) just because the owner is so particular of making sure no one else steals their recipes or re-sells their items. They want to keep their brand identity at the expense of helping people in need. They sometimes have quite a lot left at the end of day and all goes in a locked bin. Wasteful and stupid when we have community fridges around here. -Generally pretentious for the vibe of this neighborhood Pass this one by and try Frenchy's or any of the coffee shops across the street. read more

The drinks are above average (3.5 stars), the pastries are good (4 stars), and the bread is great (5 stars). Location is convenient, and they even have a spacious backyard sitting area. However, the service is somewhat lacking. Just today, I purchased over $40 worth of pastries and bread only to find that the cashier had placed them all UPSIDE DOWN and stacked one on top of the other. Because we asked to heat two of the pastries, they all stuck to the paper and all the powder and sugar came off the ones which had it. There have also been other service issues in the past, but this one is what's leading me to write this. I'm so annoyed lol!! To me, it seems like an issue of understaffing. Most of the times I'm there, I see just one person behind the counter running the register, drinks, and bread/pastries. For that reason, I will chalk it up to the owners to do better and properly staff and train employees. Do not put them in positions where they'll have to take shortcuts which damage the customer experience. Anything you make can be the greatest in history, but it will not be perceived as such if it's not properly taken care of. Honestly, I'll probably buy bread from there again (my girlfriend loves it) but I think I'll check out other places on Franklin for the foreseeable future because I know I'll say something I go back too soon to BC. Best bakery in the neighborhood but I tend not to go too often since it's a bit more on the expensive end. Still it's a great place to treat yourself once in a while. I've had one of their sourdough breads, which was so so good but it went stale on me so fast even though I stored it properly. Their croissants (of course) are so on point!!! I would def go back just to have their chocolate almond croissant as a breakfast treat - incredibly soft, flaky, buttery, and just the right amount of sweet! I recently was able to snag a $5 TooGoodToGo bag that got me 6 pieces from here, which is an amazing amount of pastries. I got 2 each of cinnamon sugar roule and chocolate almond croissant. Nice new french bakery flooding the sidewalks of Franklin Ave w freshly baked scents! The third installment from award-winning baker Chef Zack. I tired a croissant and espresso, both really tasty ^_^ The space is pretty large but linear. It is obviously more geared towards the baked goods, but serves coffee as well. Kind of ironic because there's an established cafe across the street.. But what they do differently, they do it well! The breads and treats looked so damn delicious and.. even photogenic. Huge back yard, the interior is still under some construction. Kind of a soft opening at this point. Excited to see if the other cafe's will source their pastries locally now. I come here pretty frequently as it is on my route. Chocolate chip cookies and the quiche Lorraine are great. However tonight's service earned this review and is the reason why I won't be coming again. I came in an hour before closing and ordered a matcha latte. The cashier seemed confused by my order and cut me off three times to give me the total before I could finish placing my ordering. It felt like she was rushing to be done and close up, even though there was still an hour left. There was only one other person in the shop and they were on their laptop and already had their coffee order. It was off putting, and then I realized once she poured the milk into my drink I forgot to ask for oat. I asked if it was possible to remake and I could pay for it, I cannot drink regular milk for health reasons. She deep sighed at my ask and stared at the drink awkwardly for several seconds while I waited for a response, not making eye contact with me and acted inconvenienced. I told her to forget it in the end. She didn't say anything in response and put up the sign to close the register. I ended up having to toss it since I can't have regular milk and wasted money. It's unfortunate because the pastries are good, but on a simple basis of customer service this wasn't a welcoming or hospitable experience. I had the unexpected privilege of wandering into this shop in Crown Heights, today. They had a small but good assortment of French baked goods. I ordered a chocolate almond croissant and was very pleased with the order. The croissant was light, not too airy, crisp with perfect amount of flakiness. The chocolate was slightly mouth watering and the almonds were delightful. The prices are a little on the higher side but we'll worth it if you can afford it. Staff wore masks and were helpful. The server suggested arriving before 8am next time to ensure they weren't sold out, so I came at 7.45 the next day only to find out they'd changed their opening hours and could I come back in 15 minutes while they set up? Next time I came at 8.45 and they'd changed their opening hours again. Today I came in at 10.30am to a fully stocked store and was told to come back in 15 minutes because the server just got slammed with online orders. Why are online orders given priority over someone who shows up? That seems like a terrible business practice. In any case, I could not come back in 15 minutes this time as I had a baby 2 weeks ago and this was my one allotted trip outside before going home to feed. So I guess I'll see you never Bien Cuit.
