Since moving to the East Bay I've discovered just how spoiled I was by this place. The fluffy, moist goodness of the frittatas has yet to be matched, and the sriracha is a perfect accompaniment, especially for the sundried tomato. I paid for a BART+Muni trip across the bay to come back here. It's a great treat to come back to the city for. I also grabbed a gluten-free alfajore (al-fa-hor-ay), a starchy Argentinian treat that I had started to miss since moving! And the lattes have only gotten better! read more

Very cute and cozy coffee shop in Neo valley. They have a pretty standard drink selection, and immediately after I ordered they engaged in conversation with me speaking to the neighborhood feel of the café. Even as I sat and did work, I watched the barista's engage with other customers which really showed their customer service levels. Although my latte could have been a bit hotter, the taste was great as was the banana bread that I tried on the way out. Will hopefully be back! read more

This little store front has gone through so many incarnations, I can hardly keep track anymore. I believe there was a Spinelli's coffee shop here at one point, and then a Peet's. But now, lovely Bernie has moved in, and from the looks of it, she has no plans on moving out. Good on her! This comfy little coffee shop fits in perfectly with Noe Valley's laid back, family style attitude. It's a welcome addition to 24th Street. Friendly baristas and decent coffee also round out the equation. Add some wireless Internet and you've got a bonafide gem of a hangout. Whenever I'm out fighting the strollers and nannies in the hood and in the mood for a de-caf tea or hot chocolate, Bernie's is the first place I visit. I don't drink coffee, btw. What a great addition to the neighborhood! I was getting a little fed up with my local coffee shop options until Bernie's opened up. Martha Bros is laughably inconsistent and my latte is always really bitter from the coffee being burned or exposed to the air. Starbucks is just lame. But Bernie's is great! I was in there the other day and decided to try a mocha. Bernie asked me if I wanted whipped cream. I said yes. She stared at me for a moment and then said "I was waiting for that". She turned to the barista and asked for a mocha "with fun". It was a silly moment but it's great that the staff has fun while they work. The mocha came out great. Noe Valley's 24th Street is much like Sesame Street. I wave to the Martha's Coffee dude and my cleaner lady almost everyday, the children and pregnant people outnumber everyone else. I overhear people calling it Nosy Valley who've lived here too long.... it's a great little village community. Bernie's coffee shop is 'a local girl's coffee shop.' It used to be a Tully's and this cute little blonde girl bought the shit out of it, and turned it into her dream coffee place with WIFI, a kids corner, a sunny window nook, and cute benches out front. Bernie is always there of course, and it truly seems like all of the baristas are happy and enjoy working there. The coffee is strong! The cups are all compostable! I need caffeine in the morning any way you toss it - I know that I'll go back here because I can tell they want me to. That's a good feeling. read more

Once a cafe called Spinell's then to Tully's at this location...NOW, it is Bernie's. I am never let down by the quality of coffee here. It is really wonderful and being in Noe Valley, it has that neighborhood cafe feel to it. Which I think almost everyone looks for in a cafe. "Somewhere, where everyone knows their name and they're always glad you came." I know the owner personally, and she is such a ray of sunshine. She always has that award winning smile on her face, which is part of her charm. She is personable and when you meet her, you cannot help but want to come back and support the Local Coffee Houses of San Francisco. Mainly, this one! read more

If you want to be served by a Bitchy rude queen, then this is your place. I avoid Starbucks whenever possible and walked past one to patronize this place. I order a tall Americana and he said "We only have small and large". I said: "oh, I thought tall vs short had to do with how much water is in an Americana". He retorts: " We speak English here, not Starbucks!" I ordered an Americana from my favorite coffee shops in the Financial (Cento, XTra, Vega, etc....) and they use that jargon. My point is: why be rude about it?!?! This is not how I wanted to start my morning. The place was empty compared to Starbucks across the street and I don't blame them! Walking in to this place is like walking in to a Noe Valley stereotype. There's a little section for kids with a chalkboard and scribbly drawings from kids with java-addicted parents who make them hang out in Bernie's. There are always at least 2-3 dogs outside, at least one of which has the look that it's been abandoned because its owner (excuse me, it's "human companion") left them outside for 5 whole minutes. Everyone has some obnoxious order like a triple pump extra hot nonfat macchiato or some dumb shit like that (my large soy iced mocha, however, is by no means "dumb shit"). Bernie herself is super cool and treats both her staff and customers well. Apparently she used to be a manager at Peet's and bought this place when they didn't renew the lease. Smart move, Bernie. Peet's wasn't going to survive across the street from Starbuck's, but an INDEPENDENT coffee shop was destined to thrive in Noe Valley...especially since the next-closest one is a whole block and half away. Inside Bernie's you'll be treated to typical Noe conversations by pretentious do-gooders who speak loudly specifically because they want you to overhear them talk about mortgage rates, their child's grade school honors classes, their sex change operation and/or hormone therapy, etc. You'll also see lots of Red Sox hats and heather socks with sandals, further proving my theory that Noe is a refugee camp for New England transplants. You'll probably also see a newly transplanted New Englander talking about what a wonderfully open-minded city San Francisco is, clearly not yet jaded by the sad reality that we're all close-minded liberals. When I was in there a couple of weeks ago I overheard said New Englanders talking about their friend (who had a very Jewish-sounding name like Sarah Silverman or something like that) who was a documentary filmmaker who used to work at WGBH (the local PBS affiliate in Boston) and just moved out here to work at Apple (got tired of low PBS documentary pay and sold out for the big bucks). It also means that Sarah Silverman (or whatever her real name is) is most likely a lesbian. Noe + PBS + Jewish = lesbian. This conversation alone cemented all my Noe stereotypes. Bernie's brings me great solace. Seven years of Seattle gloom have left me pale, weak, and riddled with an insatiable craving for hot, inky, liquid caffeine delivered speedily and skillfully in a friendly neighborhood cafe. Quality matters. Maybe I've had bad luck, but two months of sampling San Francisco's mom & pop coffee shops have left me cold, shaky, and unsatisfied. And along comes Bernie. Her coffee is fantastic, her baristas are first-rate, her space is wonderfully convivial and sunny, and *she* is warm, friendly, and funny. I hope she stays in business until she's 100. Or until I am. Did I mention that refills are free? They are. Did I mention that wireless is free? It is. Plus, they don't give you a dirty look when you open a laptop. All this makes me order MORE, not less, because really...I want Bernie's to stay in business forever. read more

In the high-stakes battle for cutest Noe Valley coffee shop (yes, high-stakes--the winner gets all that disposable income from the $1000 stroller crowd), Bernie's definitely wins on the exterior facade, although the disappointingly minimalist interior loses out to Martha & Bros. Either way, there was no better spot to try out my new "coffee jacket" I got for Christmas (with my hair stylishly unkempt, of course). The important thing is it's staffed by some mellow peeps brewing up some mellow (but unimpeachable) lattes. Bernie's prides itself on being a local coffee shop. I love supporting the independents. Situated on the ground floor of a green painted Victorian, Bernie's has a very chill relaxed vibe. A smattering of little round tables were occupied by laptop toting Noe-ites (free wi-fi) and sipping their coffees. I tried the iced coffee (small was around $1.85) which was fine. Definitely freshly brewed but it's the mix your own cream and sugar deal. They did have nice full cans of half and half, and honey and liquid sugar options, which was nice. Bernie's is a little dark in the back of the store and like most of SF does not have air conditioning. You have to dress for it. read more

So fantastic! I walked into Bernie's after a particularly tough therapy session. The barista was so sweet and welcoming, my mood brightened instantly. And a large steamed cup of nonfat milk w/sugar-free vanilla was only a) $2.50 and b) so tasty me wonders whether she "switched" my order to sugar because she thought I could use somethng sweet. I'm not a control freak, so I don't mind the extra mothering. Then I realized that the kind barista was none other than Bernie herself! How cool is that? read more

I'm always cruising for new coffee shops, and am a regular at Philz and Blue Bottle. After drinking individually-prepared cups of coffee, no shop that serves it by the pot can compare. Coffee oxidizes rapidly, and much like a sliced apple left outside for even a few minutes, loses its freshness immediately. A fresh pot of coffee tastes so much better because it is fresh. Thus, Bernie's was just "Meh" for me. If I were in the neighborhood and wanted a mochachino or something, maybe they'd suffice. I prefer drinking my coffee fresh, and without milk or sweeteners. read more

If you're looking for a cozy coffee shop that has better atmosphere and drinks than the chain stores, you'll love it. If you're a die hard espresso snob, this might not be the place for you. I'm somewhere in between. The atmosphere is awesome and the staff is warm and friendly. Little cramped but comfortable. Almost feels like you're hanging out in someone's living room. There's no patio space outside for tables, so they have park benches instead. Good move. For my double cappuccino the barista steamed up heaping loads of pillowy foam that stood above the edge of the glass. It's not the textured milk, like most indie shops do these days, and I like it. (I like both styles actually, they're both a treat for different occasions) The espresso itself was good, not great, but good. (This is where my snobbery starts to show) It was definitely better than the chain stores, but didn't have the deep and complex flavors that I normally prefer. Lastly, as I sat outside on the park bench reading my book, I really appreciated how many of the customers seemed to know each other. It seemed like this was the spot for many of the locals to run into each other while on their daily thing. I like a place with a community. read more

At first I was pretty damn wary of this place due to the proprietor's seemingly unfailing burning need to get all up in my business by asking such pointed questions as: "How are you doing?" and "What are you up to today?" But then, I found out about how Bernie was an old employee of Tully's (the previous occupant of said establishment), and she bought the coffee shop to spread her own bubbly brand of frontier java to the dour dog watchers and somnambulant soccer moms of Noe Valley. Yes, it's true folks; I did the leg work. I read the sign on the wall, and then I craftily asked the blond lady who seemed most likely to run for city council if her name was, in fact, Bernie. So i don't require much in a coffee shop. Ok, I lie, I'm picky and there's a specific list of requirements that must be met in order for me not to harangue it as a slinger of sour bean juice: 1) no overly perky staff at 6am 2) no celine dion 3) they know how to make a cappuccino with a stiff foam 4) no celine dion 5) no kenny g 6) no mermaid logos 7) the music is at a reasonable level and there's no kenny g and no celine dion 8) free wi-fi 9) dog friendly 10) did I mention the crap music? 11) good coffee So far Bernie's has met all my requirements and I'll be heading back. The staff is pleasant without being overly saccharine which drives me bonkers when I still feel like the walking dead. read more

So they have these amazing little frosted donuts and weirdly delicious scones -- higher quality and better selection than any other coffee shop in the neighborhood, in your opinion. And you know that nobody's perfect. You know that people who work in restaurants and coffee shops make unsanitary decisions sometimes. You know this because you've gone to the restroom somewhere and there's no soap in the dispenser, and you deduced that the employees--at least for a certain amount of time--have not been washing their hands after they pee pee (or worse, poo poo). You know this, and yet you eat out anyway, because most of the unsanitary things that happen aren't going to harm you much, if at all, and anyway, do you want to be holed up in your house all day? You have to relax. And yet, when you stop by Bernie's on your way home from work for some little iced donuts, and no one is behind the counter, but then someone walks in carrying a just-emptied trashcan, and then is very friendly as he asks what he can get for you, you think to yourself, "Is he going to wash his hands?" And when he doesn't, you wonder if he realizes that you saw him walk in with a just-emptied trash can. You offer to let the woman next to you order first, thinking that surely he'll wash his hands before he actually begins to prepare her order, in which case all of this internal monologue has been for naught, but when she orders and he puts his trashcan hands all over her cup and the various utensils he's using to prepare her drink, you walk out of the coffee shop, and for the past few weeks, you can think of nothing but trashcan hands when you walk by. And the little frosted donuts wait for you to forget all about it and come on back. read more

I really want to support the only non-chain coffee shop in Noe Valley, but Bernie's isn't making it very easy for me. A friend and I were there and I asked politely if I could close the door to which the barista said yes. The other employee working continued to open the door on the 50 degree evening and commented rudely and loudly about it. Not to mention their drinks are less than stellar. As a result, I've succumbed to the draw of the Starbucks across the street where the service is always polite and the air temperature bearable. They do have free wi-fi and many outlets... so that's where they got some stars. read more

This place re-inspired me to open up my own coffeeshop one day. Theres a story on the wall of the young lady that owns this place and how she came about to it. Suddenly, time fast-forwarded and there was my picture on that wall with my story too...its a great one too that one day I'd like to share. This place has "that feelin" I look for. It has "that ambiance" of a small community...you know that song from cheers "sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name." Well, the tune was playing in my head while I was here. I have a slight fascination with men in uniforms, well not uniform (s) but a specific type. So when I walked in to Bernies to get a coffee, sure enough I was surrounded by firefighters. Everywhere. I saw the trucks drive down the street and figured a station was close but who knows, who cares. They were there for their coffee and if there's firefighters well then damn. Who doesn't love guys...and girls (to be PC) who climb up trees and save kittens, help little old ladies cross the street and hose down burning buildings when the call comes in. Right, focus. This is about coffee. I ordered an americano (after the firefighters of course) and waited....and waited....and waited (which really wasn't all that long). I think the crew lost my cup or maybe there wasn't a cup made. I don't know but somehow it got lost and a lady behind the counter, maybe the manager asked what I ordered and quickly got the drink going. Had this been a morning where I was running late or whatever maybe I would have said something but because of those damn men in their blues we're even steven. The vibe is uber relaxed and inviting, there's even computers in the back. It's a neighborhood coffee house and it's comforting to know that people all know each other and have a power chat before walking out on their separate ways. Thank goodness I ate breakfast otherwise I may have been tempted by some of the pastries behind the counter or the miniature pumpkin cupcakes that looked moist and delicioso. I thanked the staff again for getting the drink out when I left and the not too hot coffee did its job perfectly. Excellent and attentive service, a delightful down home place to snag some coffee-and some eye candy. read more

I'd been to Bernie's three or four times before, but I hadn't chimed in with a review of my own because she was already getting such good press, and I didn't want *everyone* to start going there. But I've got to tell you about what happened tonight. I left the house at 7:52 with a fussy shrieking baby, thinking the walk might soothe Mini-Me and a hot drink might soothe my frayed nerves. I got to Bernie's right as they were locking the door. Not only did Bernie unlock the door and offer to fix me something... ...she remembered I like my steamed milk nonfat, ...she remembered that my baby has a reflux disorder, ...and she wouldn't let me pay for my drink tonight. So I left with a comforting pat on the back, a warm drink in my hand, and a smile on my face. I am so glad Bernie and her crew have set up shop in the neighborhood! read more

Yumm - love this coffee shop. So glad they instituted even larger cups for my caffeine habits. I really like the morning cake (or is is bread?) and by bf likes the Marble Cake and cookies, pretty much everything there. Been traversing around SF studying in all its wonderful coffee shops and I landed here on a Sunday afternoon after roaming around Noe Valley looking for a quiet place to study. I was pleasantly surprised when walking in to find the place pretty empty and spacious! Their coffee and pastries are delicious, there is plenty of table space and outlets, and wifi was speedy.
