Long story LOOOOONGER because I'm still waiting to hear back from the owner Lynn Bernard...... I hired them for a move from 2 seperate locations to one. Jacob, Juan V. and Juan R came to my place to move basically boxes and a bed. I got rid of the bigger things to start over...So I anticipated the move to be a quick one. And it was. I moved all my valuables myself. I'm smarter than that. The stolen items were some of my favorites. (AS I STICK MY TONGUE OUT) I moved about 2 months ago. It was the 6th week when I discovered the moving company I hired conveniently lost, I mean stole my things. I waited a few days to contact Lynn after I realized i didn't have the missing items. This call took place approximately a month after the move. I informed her of my concern and asked how can I get my things back. Her response to me was that "they do not steal and that they have a lost and found." "It must've gotten left in one of the wardrobe boxes." Apparently so...Since Jacob the leader of the crew didn't do his part to make sure that they removed all of my belongings. I'm gonna state again, THEY STOLE MY THINGS!!! She also mentioned that they clear out the trucks every night. (If this is the case, then they should have my things). Actually, I should've heard from her by now. Hmmm, so it's safe to say that they stole my shhhhhh!!!!!!! She promised she'd call back once she contacted their lost and found. I've called two other times and left calm but concerned vmails because I hadn't heard from her as promised. Guess what?! Yep, (as the jeopardy sound is now playing repeatedly)...It's been 2 weeks since those calls and still no feedback. Funny thing is that she called me after hours a few time when I wanted to hire them. Being friendly like a smiling black widow (Do they smile? -- Asking for a friend) that just trapped an unsuspecting insect in her web to be eaten alive. Now this woman told me about her eye surgery and her time off afterwards...I mean so forthcoming with her personal things and accommodating because I needed to change the movers arrival time a week before the move. But they ignored that they showed up at the original time. Plus they took over an hour and a half to get to the 2nd location. The drive should've taking no more than 30mins...SMDH. Anyways, but now that Jacob, Juan V. and Juan R. stole my stuff she ignoring my calls. Seriously, this is bad business Lynn Bernard. I feel like I paid and tipped them to steal my things. My advice is to you is if you still consider hiring this company and those 3 guys walk up to your door -- watch them vultures from the beginning to the end of your move. read more

Great work! Frank was the team leader. He was highly professional and pleasant, as were the rest of the three man crew. They were on time to arrive, very polite and efficient. They asked questions to make sure they were doing what I wanted, and followed directions well. Finished ahead of time and did not damage or lose anything. They even brought up a pencil l left behind. I have two daughters, and moved one from Michigan to Virginia, and then to San Francisco, and then to New York, and moved the other from Michigan to Chicago, and then to Aurora IL, plus I have moved a few times in the past 10 years. Owner Lynn is a Liar. This is our 6th time using Bernard movers. What happened to the company? Our first 4 moves went so well. These last two moves, not so much. Booked a Saturday move. We hired Bernard movers to come out to our house in NW Indiana to take some things from the basement and to a 10x15 storage unit in downtown Chicago. The move was set for 8-9am, confirmed by email PDF, estimating 4 hours of work excluding driving time. We had family things planned for the afternoon. The day before our move on Friday, Lynn called (cannot forget her raspy voice - menthol anyone?), stating that the truck needed mechanical work and that she needed to move our start time back to 12pm. Come Saturday, no word from anyone around 11am, I called Lynn and she stated that she never said by 12pm. I conveyed my frustrations and called her out and she recanted, stating she remembered our case now. Lynn said she had no idea where the movers were at because "no news is good news," and that they should be there on time. A driver did call a little after 12pm, stating the arrival time window was between 2-5pm. We were so upset. The movers stated they were on other jobs all morning and that we were the last move of the day. So basically we were pushed back to accommodate other business. There was no truck mechanical issue that Lynn lied about. I tried to call Lynn about these lies, and she did not pick up the phone calls. In all, try a different moving company. BM has great workers and at a competitive price, but Lynn and her coordination process is shady. And Lynn, when you read this, don't waste your time to respond with more lies and twists to the story. People appreciate the truth the first time around. read more

When I spoke to Lynn Bernard, I was specific to send me good guys, as I am a woman and don't want to be mansplained or bullied, she assured me that she only works with the best and reading their reviews, I believed her. When the guys arrived, they were very friendly. I told them I'm going to the new place, just a few blocks away to let you work. A couple of hours in, I received a call from one of the guys, telling me there was a huge problem, they had seen bed bugs. I told him, I was on my way back. I got there and the one who "saw" the bed bugs, showed me a picture on his phone and when I asked him to show me on the actual bed, he was not able to and simply responded: look, you have bed bugs, believe me, we don't have to do your move it's up to you, either we leave now or we simply leave the beds and sofas. I was surprised as I don't have bug bites, neither does my boyfriend or my younger child or any other family members who spent the night at my place. this guy explained that one can have bed bugs and never know about it because they only bite babies and elders. What was I going to do? argue and have them leave? every time someone hears bed bugs you know what it does! Fine. I went to Ace hardware, told the bug specialist what had happened and he too was surprised because it is public knowledge that if you have bed bugs you know it. I bought a gallon of product and plastics sheets, told him that's what the movers say and I don't really have a choice and I left. Of course the guys finished earlier because they didn't carry all the heavy furniture ( beds and sofas) but they did carry the pillows! I took the spray, a magnifying glass and a lamp torch and went back to my old place. The only thing is I did not see anything, I inspected every corner, every crease every hole. there was nothing. maybe some dust and ashes because I smoke in bed, but no sign of any small black beast. I called Lynn Bernard the following day, she of course covered for her guys. My advice to you Bernard company, when this happens, make sure its true and not just one of your employee who wants to finish work early for some reason. That night, I slept on the floor in my new condo and the following day, my son and his friend came to move the rest. I will never recommend you. read more

We had a nightmare move with Bernard movers last Sunday. I'm posting this as my fiance just hung up with Lynn at the office to complain. If they could have made it right with us, I wouldn't be doing a 1 star review. The movers themselves did an ok job given that the weather was terrible, but one of our boxes of dishes was pretty badly damaged. Our main problem was that the movers showed up 5 HOURS LATER than the quoted window, so we couldn't start the move until 7pm. Absolutely unacceptable. Especially since they called at 2:30pm and said they would be on their way soon. Didn't show. Then called and said we were looking at a 4-6pm window now, then showed up at 7pm. We still gave them a nice tip because of the rain, and we didn't know if the fault was theirs or the Bernard office over booking them. My fiance talked to Lynn on the phone and she refused to accept any responsibility for them being so late or grant any sort of a refund. She just basically shrugged and said "this is what happens when you hire a small mom and pop moving company and the weather is bad". Ridiculous. read more

My fiancé and I moved over memorial day weekend about 3/4 mile within Lakeview. Bernard Movers was our first experience with professional movers. They sent out a 3-man crew for our 2BD apartment move - Paul, Jose, and Louis. They were on time, and the move went very smoothly, even over a holiday weekend. The guys were cracking jokes with each other to cut the tension of moving day, and were all very friendly and helpful. It took about 4 hours to get everything moved out and in, and they asked for direction of which room we wanted all the boxes and furniture. Overall, it was an ideal move. We're a little worried they set the bar too high for the next time we move, so I guess we'll be back to Bernard Movers some years from now! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this moving company. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I was scheduled for a move in the morning at 8-9am. After many unanswered phone calls (over 20 during the day) I was finally able to reach someone who told me my move was being postponed to the afternoon. The crew had been mistakenly sent to a different job when they were supposed to be taking care of my move. There was no communication about this. UNACCEPTABLE. I had to turn in my keys and my move out inspection at 2pm, which I could not do. I was charge an extra week of rent by me previous landlord since I could not vacate my apartment at the time agreed upon. Bernard Movers took no responsibility for this. When I told the company I would not pay the full price for their very poor service, they threatened me to cancel my move. RUDE AND HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I was told the movers were on their way and would be at my place between noon and 3pm. At 4pm, still nobody. I called many times and never got an answer. The movers arrived at 7pm (read 11 hours late). The move to my new place did not end until midnight which disturbed my new neighbors. I got complaints and the police called on me for the noise disturbance. The movers were INCONSIDERATE and started hammering the door at midnight to take it off. This whole experience was a NIGHTMARE!!! The moving company absolutely refused to charge me less for the trouble and did not care about it at all. I am a nice person, but I honestly do not have one nice thing to say about Bernard Movers. They might seem cheaper than other moving companies but you get what you pay for, namely crappy service. For this past move, Lynn was very cordial on the phone getting us set up for our move and was extremely accommodating considering our tight turnaround. The day of the move, we were scheduled for the afternoon slot which started anywhere from 12-3pm. I can't believe I spaced on writing this review because everyone I've spoken with about my move this past July probably thinks I'm weirdly obsessed, Regina George style, with Bernard Movers because everything went SO smoothly! A friend who had used them the previous summer suggested I check them out and I reached out to them over Yelp's 'Request a Quote' feature. Lynn got back to me right away with, not only a great price, but great service. It was clear she and the team genuinely cared about making sure my stuff made it from one location to the next safely. My first apartment was on a skinny, one-way street, and the team was able to find an alley to stash their truck and they brought up the complimentary wardrobe boxes for me to load while they started to bring my stuff down. I had everything packed in boxes and random duffle bags and they didn't bat an eye at the semi-off packing strategy. They wrapped my mattresses in plastic wrap so it wouldn't get dirty in the truck. When the truck was loaded, I met them at the second apartment and they got right to work unloading everything. I definitely learned that I should have labeled the boxes better with their final room locations (this was my first time using a professional moving service), but they were patient with me as I directed them. They even put my bed frame back together for me--they seriously took care of everything! The movers were professional and trustworthy--I had no qualms about trusting them with my stuff when I stepped out to grab us all some Subway sandwiches while they were unloading. Payment was simple and taken care of quickly. These guys were awesome! I moved from 2 apartments in Bucktown to a house in the suburbs. They got the job done in 5.5 hours. Also with a rate of $120 / hr during prime moving dates, they're reasonably priced as well! After getting a quote from the owner, it was actually really difficult getting a hold of them to book a move date, but after trying every phone number on the website I reached Mena on this "polish speakers" line. She coordinated every detail and was extremely helpful and thorough. Anthony managed the group during the day of the move, today, and everything went seamless on their end. We went a bit over time because we had a few more things to bring than expected -- last minute reshuffling in the truck will def kill some time. Nothing that was their fault though. The guys moved everything pretty quickly and we were all laughs and jokes the whole time. The only thing that I could possibly complain about is the oil stain they left on our driveway, but assuming they only move in the city, that's not something anyone would have noticed. I highly recommend these guys. This was the easiest moving experience I've ever had. I'm averaging about 5 apartments in the last 7 years. read more

I am very happy with Bernard movers. I schedule a move 2 days in advance at the end of the month and Lynn was able to get me a spot on the day I needed. We had a marathon move this past weekend. We moved out of a 4 story walkup (with a piano) and into a narrow 4 story townhouse, 2 blocks away. Our team from Bernard was Frank, Brian O, Kendall, and Anthony. They were great. They took care of all our belongings (Nothing was broken at all). There were some tricky pieces of furniture and they came up with creative ways to get it where I wanted it to be. Beyond their skills as movers, they all had great personalities and great attitudes. This was a painful, 13 hour event and I never heard one complaint. Hopefully, I won't have to move again any time soon ... but I will definitely request these guys if I do. This was my second move with Bernard Movers. Both times the teams were quick and careful. For a two-bedroom 2nd floor walk up it took them just under 3 hours to get things out of the apartment and moved into the new place just as quickly. They were professional, courteous and very helpful with the little things. My only complaint would be each time I was promised a moving team of 3 guys and each time the 3rd showed up later in the process. The business impressed us from the first call we made to learn about their services, to beyond move-in day. We opted for the direct delivery service, where the team picked up our items and drove them to our destination - which, unlike van lines, ensured that we would get our items delivered within two days. The best part of the experience, was working with, and getting to know, the movers themselves. On pickup day, a team of 4 worked quickly and carefully, and made sure we just got to relax during the process. I've moved many times - but this was the absolute first time I actually enjoyed the day! I'm really sorry to read some of these reviews from other yelpers. As we all know, moving is one of life's most stressful situations. No matter how well you plan, budget and mentally prepare for it, it almost always hits you with a surprise left and sends you reeling. The trick in moving is to minimize the pain. When I made the decision to pack up eight years worth of life and memories and move south, I knew that I had a challenge ahead of me. While my Lakeview living situation was pleasant enough, the main reason I chose not to move was because I didn't want to move. Moving sucks. So, I knew I had a challenge ahead of me. I threw away/donated as much stuff as I could, but I am a packrat by nature. I accumulate... stuff and I keep it. Great for a museum but terrible for a move. Oh, and my move time was truncated. I needed to do it ASAP. Got all that? Good. I called a series of movers. Some didn't go out of state. Some couldn't move me on such short notice. Some couldn't deliver me in a decent enough time frame. Some were super shady. I was getting worried. How was this going to happen? (At the time), I saw some good reviews of a moving company on Yelp and cross-referenced those reviews with the state's mover directory (do this). After doing my homework, I found Bernard. They were able to come out to my place, survey my stuff, give me a decent quote, pick me up and deliver me in a good amount of time, and MOVE MY CAR so I wouldn't have to drive it down. And, did I mention the quote was reasonable? Awesome. Done. Sold. Granted, I did all the packing other than the kitchen, but I was alright with that. I thought. One week of little rest, a bunch of cursing, uncontrollable sobs, cries out to the heavens, and a booze-fueled all-nighter, moving day came. To my surprise, the guys came on time. I wasn't surprised because of the company. I was surprised that *anyone* would be on time for a 7:30 am load-in. Marvin was the crew lead and he was a professional. He directed his guys on what to move, when to move it, how to get everything tagged, and my worry of worry, getting my ginormous and HEAVY antique armoire I've had since I lived in New Orleans, safely out of my apartment and into the truck without the benefit of my building's large cage elevator. Within hours, I was packed up and Marvin said he would see me in Miami. This was on Friday. Wednesday morning, as promised, Marvin called me and was outside my new building. His crew was local but nonetheless as professional as his Chicago people. They had my stuff in my new place and my car sitting on the street within hours. Nothing was broken or scratched, Everything was as it should have been. Moving is a nightmare. It's an unavoidable (for most) part of life that doesn't seem to get easier. Marvin made my life as easy as it could have been in this situation. I don't know if the bad reviews stem from a particular employee or situation(s) that don't translate well to reviews. I don't know. What I do know is that Bernard Movers got me from Chicago to Miami with short notice and for a reasonable price and Marvin made sure that pick up and delivery was a relative breeze. I hate moving but when I have to do it, I hope that I have experiences as good as the one I had with Bernard Movers and Marvin. read more

FROM SHINING STARS TO SHI**Y SERVICE! I have used Bernards before and even have left great reviews online. My recent experience has left me sleeping on hardwood floor, no clothing, no pots, no pans, no winter coats, NOTHING , NOT ONE PIECE OF MY PROPERTY because this company moved my things on September 24 and are now holding my things hostage. They underestimated my original quote by $400 and refuse to release my things until I pay several weeks of storage at $50 per week (we are on week 9) and prepay for my move in at an overblown estimate of $700 (which has never costs more than $400 from point A to point B). THEY CHARGED ME NEARLY $300 in materials. They are demanding nearly $2000 before anything happens. They refuse to acknowledge that they did not inform me I would be forced to shrink wrap EVERYTHING, tape things that didnt necessarily have to be taped, and box every large single item that may have been loose...THEY DID A POOR JOB AT TELLING ME WHAT THEIR STORAGE POLICIES ARE. EVERYTHING MUST BE TAPED, SHRINK WRAPPED, AND BOXED EVEN IF IT DOESN'T REALLY SEEM NECESSARY. They refuse to talk to me unless I say I have all the monies they demand, they don't return my phone calls for questions. They refuse to allow me ANY access to my things to get MEDICAL SUPPLIES or WORK EQUIPMENT!!! I CAN'T GET MONEY IF I CAN'T WORK! Bernard Movers has excellent reviews online but I warn EVERYONE to avoid this company. I am shocked, disappointed and dismayed that this company, that has moved me twice before, has left me in the cold....literally!!! read more

I was excited to use Bernard Movers for our local move. We were scheduled for an 8 am move on a Saturday. We received a message on Friday that the move needed to be pushed back a few hours. Okay, a bit inconvenient, but we could deal. The movers contacted us and said they needed to move it back to 5 pm....then we were told they would be another couple of hours. Finally, the move was pushed back to the next day!!! We have a 2 year old son and our entire house was already boxed up. This was unprofessional and a poor job on the schedulers part. The movers were able to get the move done quickly on Sunday and we do not fault them at all. Next time schedule your moves based on the amount of stuff people have. That way a job that takes 9 hours isn't scheduled in a four hour block. read more

Great customer service, speedy movers, reasonable price. We moved a bunch of stuff from our condo on the 23rd floor to a storage unit, and they were great. We got the whole place moved with 4 guys in under 3.5 hours. Lynn is fantastic to work with as well. Update 5/15/2008 We just used them once again to move out of our storage unit, and into our top floor condo. These guys had to unload a 14 foot UHaul packed to the brim and our entire storage unit in a 20ft plus truck from our back alley and up 4 flights of outside stair cases. One of the more inexperienced movers put a scratch in our hardwood floors, but the next day their repair person called me and made arrangements to get it fixed. I hired Bernard Movers based on a referral from a close friend. I'd never hired movers before, so I was pretty nervous, but they were AMAZING. They were courteous, professional, and fast! They didn't waste any time and had me out of my last place and into my new place, furniture assembled and clothes in my closet in two hours flat! The price was very reasonable compared to the other quotes I got, and it was well worth the money. They took all the stress out of moving, which I didn't think was possible.
