I used Jay Movers for a move from an elevator building in Wicker Park to a four story walk-up in Logan Square. The crew was unbelievable. If you want to be talked to like a 3-year-old, use this company. If you want crappy communication, use this company. I utilized Jay Movers in July 2024. The guys showed up on time and went right to work. Let me be clear, we had ZERO complaints about the team that moved our stuff. They were pretty great. My issue was with the admin guy, BK, that we dealt with prior to and after the move. When we were quoted for our move, there was a 2.5-hour charge listed for travel. When I questioned it, it was explained to me that the charge was for the guys getting to and back during the move. Since it would roughly take them this time to get from our starting point to the destination, I ASSUMED that this was the travel charge. (Let me also add that I had to call them a few days before the move to confirm the moving day and start time.) At the end of the move, when we went to clear the bill, I saw that there was billing for the packing/unpacking time as well as the drive time to the new house AND the 2.5 travel charge, ~$450.00. The lead guy on the moving team called BK. While I am sure BK deals with this same question from many of their customers, I do not move every year and can admit that I am unfamiliar with standard billing policies for Chicago moving companies. This apparently encouraged him to talk to me as if I were a toddler. "I clearly explained this to you when we talked the first time..." and my response was, "Apparently it was not clear if I am questioning it now. I am not a stupid person," [this comment came because of the tone he was talking to me in], "and I obviously did not realize that we would have an additional travel charge. I assumed the 2.5 hours was for their travel time to the house." He continued with the condescending tone for several minutes and I finally had to tell him that we didn't have to keep recapping it, I would be paying the bill. In addition to this, they moved our baby grand piano. I have had my pianos moved several times over my lifetime and they have never taken the top off--but in this move they did. When they went to set the piano back up, some of the keys were stuck (also something that has never happened in a move). The moving team could not get all the keys unstuck so, again, they called BK who told me that he would call Jay (the owner) because moving pianos was "his specialty" and could tell us what to do. Yet, when I called Jay, he acted as if he did not know what 'piano keys' were. He had NO idea what I was talking about. So, I called BK back who laughed and said he would call Jay again and explain it to him. (So much for moving Pianos being the owner's specialty). In the meantime, the moving team left telling me that the company would send someone out to fix it--their assessment was that the inside of the piano shifted when they moved it--they had seen it several times before. A short while later, I called Jay back again and he said that would have to call someone who knew more about this issue and he would call me back. Needless to say, they never called back. They never addressed the issue. [Upon my own research I have found out that the piano tuner will be able to fix this but at this point, it is the principle that the moving company had ZERO intention on discussing this.] So, really, if it were possible to just deal with the moving team, it would be great--But the customer service portion from the admin team just is not worth it. I paid too much money for the move to be treated like this. read more

I don't write Yelp reviews, but this poor customer service must be shared. Save yourself the stress. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Note I used Jay mover for 4 previous moves and the lack of customer service, and l this terrible experience was so disappointing that I will NEVER use them again and will be sure to tell everyone how poor their service is. BROUGHT A TRUCK THAT WAS TOO SMALL AND REFUSED TO GET A BIGGER ONE -They arrived with a truck that was too small for the amount of items in our apartment. One driver, the most senior, suggested going back to get a larger truck. The other two movers refused saying "they worked a 50 hour week, and wanted a short day". All of the items did not fit and I have a small vans worth of items left in my old apartment. WENT TO THE WRONG ADDRESS - the driver didn't want to used his GPS and despite having the correct information went to the wrong apartment for the final stop. BROKE A $200 LAMP and MIRROR - was told two different stories about how it happened. DIDNT WANT TO REASSEMBLE ITEMS THEY TOOK APART - we were asked several times if we were "good" regarding reassembling our dining room table and bed which they took apart at our old apartment. SHOWED UP WITHOUT ADEQUATE TOOLS- How??? They didn't have a range of tools to take apart my bed and table. As I mentioned I have used Jay for 4 other moved and have had the same table. Never once had a problem. TWO DRIVERS STOPPED WORKING THE LAST 30 MINUTES OF THE MOVE- leaving one man to put together the bed. The table was unfinished because the tools they borrowed from my husband were part of the items that were left behind at the old apartment. My husband had to put the table together once they left. The two drivers sat in the car and didn't help at all. GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT REGARDING TIP - one mover remained upstairs in the move during the last 30 minutes. We gave him 20% for gratuity and told him to split it in whatever way they saw fit. We needed to get more cash to pay our balance (which was 325 additional dollars on top of 411 dollars) and had them follow us. Upon getting to the ATM, the mover who stopped working jumped out of the truck and got in my husbands face asking why they didn't get a tip! The one guy lied and now we're we're roped into their drama in the middle of a Walgreens parking lot! Literally a nightmare!! OWNER LIES ABOUT CUSTOMERS COMING FIRST- on their website owner Jay says that customer service is their priority. LIES! As a very loyal customer when I shared all of the details of this unprofessional and stressful move, the least he could do was comp the service of getting our remaining items. He refused to do anything to accommodate our belongings but wanted us to book another crew for 260 more!!! Outrageous Save yourself the stress. I will never ever use them again. read more

I HIGHLY recommend Jay Movers for MANY reasons! 1. BK The Office Manager - when I called to request an estimate I was shoping around for different movers. BK was extremely polite and professional. He answered all of my questions and gave me a list of questions I should be asking any other moving companies I was interested in. Instead, I decided to book with this company immediately due to BK's customer service. 2. Safety - Moving us into our home mid-pandemic, the team was very professional, they were on time and made sure to wear their protective face masks and maintain a safe distance. They were quick, careful and very kind. 3. Skill - We had to move a piano down a narrow flight of winding stairs. This is as awful as it sounds, but the crew did an amazing job without leaving a single scratch on the piano or the walls. 4. Speed - Im still amazed at how quickly they moved us. Our original estimate was for 5-7 hours and they completed the entire move (with two pickup stops) in 4.5 hours. Simple, efficient, a relief! After comparison with another mover, we chose Jay for price and simplicity of estimate. The destination for the move was smaller and freshly painted so I was nervous about how well it would go. After explaining the three locations I wanted items to be put in (2nd floor, first floor and basement, the crew (Jose M, Oscar, Miguel, Sam) speedily got to work. They estimated 5+ hours but with our preparation ahead of time (disassembling furniture, wrapping in cellophane we already had, and rearranging boxes and furniture by destination location - I mentioned being nervous right?) we did the whole move in 3.5 hours. On-site at the destination, it was super straight forward: just a bit of supervision for some outlier items I wanted in special places. All said, very happy and relieved it's done so fast. Also I appreciated the call from BK in the office asking how the move went. Means a lot to have the personal touch. We witnessed this same crew move another household and did a stellar job (including a piano). Definitely will continue to recommend Jay. read more

These guys are the absolute best. Let me start by saying that last year when I moved I had an absolutely horrible experience. This time around, I was looking for a team of movers that would be reliable and efficient. Jay Movers did not disappoint! I moved from Avondale to the Loop a few weeks ago and they were amazing. I worked with BK over the phone to sort out the logistics a few weeks before my move. He was very courteous and seemed to be very reliable. He is a straight shooter. On move day, I was greeted on time by 4 movers (I only paid for 3) and they were led by José. Additionally, BK showed up just to say hi! The team was extremely efficient - moving me into my new place in 2.5 hours (the minimum time requirement). In fact, when we got to the new place we were a bit early and had to wait for my elevator time...they stopped my clock so I wasn't paying for idle time! The move was great and they even fixed my couch that I thought was previously broken by my last moving team. Ricardo and the team were AWESOME. The guy @ the office (sorry I don't remember your name! DK?) was great about keeping me in the loop as we got closer to the move, then called me day of to let me know that the guys were finishing the previous job EARLY and were going to be on their way soob. THEN I get a call from Ricardo saying they're on their way and he showed up exactly when he said he would, an hour before the quoted time which was FINE by me. The move was a little complicated because I was moving out of a place with my roommates and I was the only one leaving the apartment. They followed my directions exactly and only took the things that were mine (which was a feat). I also had a cargo van full of my other stuff that they moved as well. The job was done in less time than they quoted me and four hours earlier than they'd estimated and they were totally professional, efficient, and took care of all of my stuff. All for a really affordable price, and all during a global pandemic to boot!! THANK YOU to Jay Movers for the most seamless and stress free move I've ever had (and I've moved a LOT). UPDATE 4/21/19: used Jay Movers for another move and even more impressed than we were our first time using them! Making a reservation for the date and time was painless. Dealing with B.K. Made everything so easy! We were moving from a 2 bed apartment in downtown Evanston to the west suburbs, and we actually considering not getting movers due to other estimates we were given (upwards of $1500). BK provided us with two different quotes, due to minimum time/the long commute. 1. The quotes were HALF as much as what other companies were quoting us and 2. The crew did our move in exactly what we were quoted- this never happens! BK was patient with me as I had made a couple calls with questions leading up to our move, and even called the morning of to check in on things. Now for the crew- we were given a one hour window for their arrival, which is already awesome when you don't want to be waiting around all day. They showed up 10 minutes after 8, came in to check out the place, explained the paperwork quickly, and got straight to work. We had a 3 of amazingly hard working men! They worked SO FAST, so quickly, and really took initiative on everything. They did our entire move (including a long commute in under 4.5 hours. NOT A SINGLE THING WAS BROKEN OR DAMAGED! 3 reasons I have to ignore their efficiency and leave a 1 star review: 1) They put a huge divot in the wall, knew it, pretended they didn't do it... and then gave me a hard time when I called management about it after the fact. The landlord repaired it and charged us for the damage. Jay disputed, I sent pictures as proof, and then they just ignored me. Offering to come fix it themselves later on was useless as the landlord had to turn the apartment around for the next tenant. 2) It was a reasonably quick moving job and I tipped each mover (3 total) $20. One of them told me that wasn't enough and they usually get 20% each. I felt guilty in the moment and had exactly $10 left, so I gave that as well as another $20 on the bill itself. I have a soft heart, but looking back it's ridiculous to tell someone to give you a bigger tip when the initial tip itself was more than fair (I had polled a bunch of friends to ask what they would give in similar circumstances and all agreed $20 a head was more than fair). 3) When I called in about the damage and the tipping shenanigans came up, they were quick to say they would take the money back from the movers... but refused to budge on refunding us for the damage to the wall. I told them not to touch the money from the movers since even though I disagreed with their tip solicitation, they worked their asses off for us. As I said in point 1, after an email with proof they just stopped responding. Anyway, I give them credit for being very efficient in moving apartments, but the experience left me with such a sour taste that I'll be looking at their competitors going forward. Provided mattress bag for my king size bed, but they chose to roll my expensive mattress up and wrap it with plastic wrap that I had to pay for. Don't worry, though, they cut up my mattress bag and put all my custom framed art loosely inside with no protection. All the frames were scratched up heavily. I had tipped pretty big, so much so they called me to confirm the numbers. Upon getting to unpack my art, I saw the damage, called, and the owner, Jay, came by. He offered me 30 cents per pound money back. That's $30. Each frame job was between $150 and $250. He offered to use a marker to color in the damage, but I declined. They did enough damage. I understand damage happens during a move, but no one in their right mind would lay art on top of each other without protection between each piece. Totally unacceptable. read more

We just used Jay Movers for the 2nd time and we could not have been happier (again). BK set up our move over the phone and he was very happy to answer all my questions and get us squared up for our early morning move. The team that showed up was one of the most efficient moving teams I've ever had or seen work. It was Jose M, Ricardo and Emanuel and they showed up right on time to our 2 BR apt. They quickly assessed the best way to get everything wrapped/padded and out into the truck. Once they got going it was like clockwork. That truck was loaded up and we were on the move before we knew it. Once we were at the new apartment, they were all continually checking with my wife and I to make sure things were going where they were supposed to and they had the whole thing done in about three hours on the dot - which is what we expected. One of the things I really appreciated was that they disassembled and reassembled our bed frame. That was one thing we didn't have time to do and they said not to worry - they had it.
