I was astonished by how bad the Korean fried chicken wings were. I think they got a frozen bag of wings from Costco dumped him in the fryer, left them out for three days and then served them to me. Asian fusion brunch restaurants are my favorite and this place exceeded my expectations. Took my friends who were visiting SF to Berkeley Social Club for brunch, as it's consistently been one of my favorite brunch spots in the Bay Area. Parking in the area is mostly street-based, but there are a few parking structures nearby if you don't mind a short walk. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, with a lively yet relaxed atmosphere perfect for a weekend brunch. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal. I ordered the Blackstone Benedicts, which were absolutely delicious. The eggs were perfectly poached, and they complemented the Millionaire's Bacon exceptionally well. The dish was well-balanced, with rich flavors and fresh ingredients making each bite a delight. My friends were equally impressed with their dishes, which included the Korean Fried Chicken and the Breakfast Burrito - both highly recommended. One thing to note: the restaurant now bills a 20% gratuity for parties of five or more, which I was a bit surprised about. The millionaires bacon was great but I'm not super heavy into bacon anymore so I wouldn't get it too often but if you love bacon you'd probably get this every time you come here. It's sweet, savory, and peppery. If you've ever had Filipino tocino that's charred a bit it kind of reminds me of that. The morning pizza was solid I liked the crispy mozzarella bits that were all over the dish. The arugula tasted really fresh as well and it cut through the heaviness of the potatoes, cheese, chorizo, and egg. My friend got the KFC Benedict was just okay, chicken was cooked great but I thought it was going to be covered in a Korean fried chicken style sauce (like soy garlic for example) . The Berkeley Social Club, or BSC is a large Korean fusion restaurant in downtown Berkeley that specializes in breakfast and brunch combined with popular Korean rice and noodle dishes. I came here to help celebrate a colleague's work anniversary for lunch. As with many Berkeley restaurants, you'll have to look for street parking. For appetizers, I recommend sharing the salmon avocado toast (5 stars) and an order of Millionaire's Bacon to share. Large, rectangular flaps of candied bacon to give a nice balance of savory porkiness with a hint of sweetness. Great for neutralizing any spicy main dishes. My entree was the pimped up Ramyun. This dish reminded me of the beef noodle dish featured in the Korean movie, Parasite, so it piqued my curiosity. The presentation was clever- eggy noodles spilling over from an instant ramen cup and dressed with cabbage, spicy seasoning, runny fried egg, and more of that Millionaire bacon. I enjoyed the dish, though a bit a spicier than I like (4 stars). Everyone in berkeley comes here at least once, and it is just a classic spot to check out. They really focus on presentation, so you can count on getting a good pic for social media. The servers are kind, and the food comes out so fast! Waffle and kfc - this Korean take on the classic chicken and waffles was a nice combination of sweet and savory. I do think the only thing that really made this Korean was that the syrup seems to have some gochujang mixed in it. It wasn't anything special and didn't add anything crazy to the meal. I wish the chicken had a soy sauce glaze or something that resonates more with the idea of Korean fried chicken, but I liked that it was boneless and crispy. Overall, my friend and I both got this dish and agreed it was too dry. We would've appreciated another kind of sauce for the chicken besides the little amount of syrup they give. Dutch pancake - my friend got this since it was such a unique item on a brunch menu, and the presentation was absolutely stunning. It's essentially a flat bowl made out of pancake with filling in the center of the pan. we were warned it would take 20 minutes, but the wait for it really is not that long. My friend added berries to her dish, and she said this was its only saving grace. Without the berries, it's just a concave pancake with an overwhelming amount of granola at the bottom. Truly nothing special apart from the presentation. A gem! Let's get right into it. My bestie and I came here on a Sunday morning, and my best advice is to MAKE A RESERVATION. It was packed, so thankfully I had done so. The ambiance is cute, and the table setup allows for maximum capacity without feeling crowded or imposed upon. The chai latte was good, and I was sooo happy that there are so many options for benedicts that aren't red meat based. I tried the Korean fried chicken benedict and the flavor was EXPLOSIVE! The portion size is also awesome, and I took half home for later (it still tasted great later). For price point, it was well worth it and the service was IMMACULATE. Our server checked in enough and made sure we had what we needed, but didn't over crowd and I loved that they DIDN'T RUSH US TO LEAVE. One of my favorite places to dine in Berkeley! Their brunch menu and dinner menu are both impeccable as well as their drinks. Made a 5:45 reservation here ahead of the Caamp concert. Figured it would give us enough time to eat then head over for a 7:30 start time. Arrived and were seating promptly by the host. Everything went downhill from there. Restaurant was about half full when we got there (they opened at 5:00) and looking around I noticed only one table was eating (subtle foreshadowing) but didn't think too much of it. Got waters and ordered some appetizers. After about 20 minutes I looked around for a waiter to check on apps but could only find the host who also appeared to be their only waiter. By this time more groups were starting to filter in and host was jumping between host stand and taking orders. He said he'd check on our apps. Another 10 minutes go by and we're starting to get a little annoyed at this point. This time I went to the bartender and asked for a waiter to come take our entree orders since at this point we're already half hour in with no food at all. Bartender went to the kitchen and at the same time someone came with our food finally. I asked this person if they could take a food order for us which he did. We finish our apps and another 30 minutes goes by without entrees. Other groups who had entered the same time we did were in the same situation as us. The host/server was frantically running around the dining room trying to put out the grumbles of annoyed guests. Another 15 minutes and our entrees finally arrive. By this time it's about 7:00. The two stars are for the food and ambience which is good but the food might have just tasted good because we were so hungry by this point. Not sure if it was an off night or what but they were way understaffed in the front of house for the volume of and I assume people the back of house was the same. This place was extremely busy for brunch, but now I understand. There was a great selection to choose from and brunch dishes I have not seen at other places. It was hard to decide but I was happy with my choices. Eggs in Purgatory with Toast 4/5: This was something that I was interested in trying. The main base was a tomato stew with bacon, mushrooms, eggs, etc. The toast slice was pretty thick and hard to chew through so it was really helpful to dip it in the stew. The stew itself was flavorful but a bit salty for my liking. There were plenty of bacon pieces and all the other ingredients made the dish tasty altogether. We initially placed ourselves onto the Yelp waitlist 15 minutes before arriving so highly recommend doing so if you want to avoid the wait! The place was modern and had a nice lively environment. Once seated, we were able to order our two dishes and a drink very quickly. Waffle and KFC (4/5) - The plating of this dish was really nice. The chicken was crispy and went well with the waffles and fruits. However, I've had better Korean fried chicken. Ube Latte (5/5) - After Ube Lattes from other brunch places and being disappointed from the dull flavors, I didn't have high expectations for this. However, I was surprised with how flavorful this latte was. You could really taste the Ube! Brussel Hash with Toast (5/5) - This dish consisted of a variety of ingredients from Brussel sprouts, eggs, potato, toast, and more! Tantalizing ideas but execution not quite there. I've seen lots of yummy, aesthetic images of food from Berkeley Social Club shared and was excited about the opportunity to have brunch there after a hike brought me to the area. They weren't using the Yelp Waitlist feature this day (where you can add yourself to the Waitlist before getting to the restaurant), but thankfully it was only ~10 minutes of a wait after I inputted my information in person at the restaurant. My friends and I were promptly seated by a friendly waitress and spent a long time perusing the generous menu. There were interesting fusion dishes and lots of dishes featuring Millionaire's Bacon. Two friends ended up getting the popular blueberry marscapone stuffed French toast, one got a burger and I opted for the KFC avocado salad. Maybe we were especially hungry but we seemed to wait quite a while for our food. In the meantime my friend's ube latte arrived - it has no caffeine but was a pleasant, rich, warming drink that she said was good. When at long last our food arrived and we dug in, it was good but could be better. The french toasts had a good crunch on the outside but were a bit heavy and hard to finish - surprising for a cheese as light as marscapone. My salad didn't have much flavor apart from the overly creamy sriracha dressing, the bacon was tough and proportions off with maybe ~8 cherry tomatoes total to go wuth a whole bed of greens and chicken. While everything looked great and I enjoyed my time at BSC, I didn't find it an experience to rave about and don't think I would crave coming back again. read more

We made a dinner reservation for 7:30 pm, but even though it was Valentine's Day they didn't seem too busy, so we might have been okay without reserving. We ordered three appetizers (shrimp sticks, dino foot, and buns w/ KFC) and the dolsot entree. The shrimp sticks were more like shrimp nuggets as opposed to whole shrimp, which I was a little surprised about. The spicy mayo that accompanied them was pretty good, but I think the texture of them being nuggets kind of threw me off, so I would say this item was only okay for me, but my boyfriend really liked them. The dino foot is highly recommended on Yelp for good reason - very good flavor and variety of textures. The BSC buns were also just okay for me; one of the KFC pieces actually had a bone in it, which was a bit off-putting. Finally, my boyfriend and I agreed the dolsot was really good, though it was pretty oily! We didn't upgrade it to any of the meat options, but the fried tofu had a nice texture and the flavors were great. This was a good amount of food for the two of us, but the bill does end up being pretty pricey if you order multiple apps. I know they are more known for their brunch, which I have yet to try, so I would be interested in coming back for that.
