IMHO, this has to be the best pan-fried Chinese dumpling house in South Austin, and possibly the best in Austin metro area. Their dough reminds me of my mom's homemade recipe, which is very traditional. Their soup dumplings are also outstanding, and is on par with Ling Wu's soup dumplings. And unlike most other traditional Chinese restaurants, the service is good as well. Definitely one of my favorites in S. Austin. read more

I've eaten here several times in the last few months. The soup dumplings are amazing, as are the chili oil wontons, the King Pao chicken, the noodle dishes, and the sautéed spinach with garlic. (Note: I write Facebook reviews for residents of Turner's Crossing, a new development in Buda, as we all learn about good places to dine in Austin.) ------------- I'm going to write this review while the memory of the great food we finished only minutes ago still lingers on my taste buds. Turner's Crossing neighbors highly recommended this place after trying it recently. Being a couple of foodies, wife Karen and I were anxious to give it a shot, considering we have not been at all satisfied with the Chinese restaurants we have sampled so far in the area. I think it's pretty sad when the best Chinese food we have had since moving here about two years ago is dished up at a buffet, the East Buffet at I-35 and William Cannon. See my earliet review of that place. We have been there at least five times. Note that if you Google One Bite Dumpling to check out the directions and the menu, you are redirected to the website of Bee Dumpling, which is apparently its actual name now. The restaurant itself is still adorned with a large sign that says One Bite Dumpling. Until they change the name on the building, I will refer to it as One Bite Dumpling. It is located in a strip mall at the southeast corner of the Manchaca Road intersection with William Cannon. The twin strips of parallel shops run perpendicular to Manchaca, so watch carefully for an entrance as you near the intersection. One Bite Dumpling is a spacious, comfortable and clean eatery with an extensive menu of goodies, many of which I have never tried. I grew up eating Chinese food on a regular basis, and almost every restaurant my family went to specialized in Cantonese style food. Since then, I have also become fond of Szechuan cooking, which is different and can be much spicier. After looking at the menu, I asked Oscar our waiter what Chinese cooking style was featured but he did not know, just said it was likely a mix of various styles. The menu was not specific. For my first of what I expect will be several visits to this place, I picked the chicken chow mein ($12.99), partially because ithe menu photo looked similar to the Cantonese chow mein I had ordered my whole life. Oscar pointed out that the portions are generous. He wasn't blowing smoke, because I took about a third of my dish home. It will make a nice lunch for Karen or me, depending on who gets to it in the refrigerator first. My chow mein was definitely not the same as Cantonese style, which I always enjoy, but I relished this change of pace. It was tasty, served piping hot, and satisfying. Big chunks of chicken were tender and coated with a delicious sauce. Karen, who had never eaten Chinese dumplings before, went with an order of the crab meat soup dumplings ($13.99). Interestingly, Oscar the waiter noted that Karen's order contained sausage, which I guess he does because some diners have an aversion to pork. I'm surprised that little cautionary note was not on the menu. Karen's dish was also steaming hot, and she carefully slid a large spoon beneath one dumpling to try it. She immediately nodded approvingly, so I knew we had a winner. Check out the menu online. Dumplings, especially soup dumplings, appear to be a lot more popular in Chinese restaurants in the Austin area then they were in the upper Midwest where we hail from. Karen graciously allowed me to sample one of hers, and it's something that I will be likely ordering the next time. We were also intrigued by one of the appetizers, labeled salt and pepper squid ($12). We vowed to include that in our dinner on our next visit. The restaurant has a pretty good mix of tables with comfortable chairs and the usual booths. Service was extremely efficient. We were also grateful that the temperature inside was comfortable, and sweaters or jackets were not needed like so many restaurants where they only have two settings for the air conditioner: Arctic blast, or off. We had a chance to enjoy a pleasant conversation with Oscar, who quickly commented on my Ohio State cap when we entered. In the first few minutes, he explained that he studied a year in Columbus at Ohio State. He later spent some time at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and was a big fan of the state of Ohio. Of course, that was enough reason for me to give him a bigger tip. He spoke fine English with a thick Russian accent because his family came from Kyrgyzstan, formerly part of the Soviet Union. I was surprised at the heavy accent because he was born and raised in Chicago. Nevertheless, he is an affable chap and an excellent waiter. Ask for him if you decide to try One Bite Dumpling. The place is well worth the short drive from our neighborhood of about 20 minutes or so. After only one visit, we already have this restaurant among the top half dozen places in our rotation of eateries. read more

I was bummed when Hao Hao closed down, but I'm so happy One Bite Dumpling moved in and took its place! It seems like they're still decorating and getting in to the swing of things, but we had a great meal overall. Our server was friendly and helpful as we asked some questions about different items on the menu. We started with the Pork Soup Dumplings and Radish Salad. The dumplings were classic with a deep pork flavor and nicely steamed dough. The radish salad was really fun. We loved the crunchy, pickled kind of vibe the dish gave off. For our entrees, we got the Black Pepper Chicken Udon and Hot Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. The udon was really great and unlike anything I've had at other Chinese restaurants. I would highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you don't do spicy. The beef noodle soup was probably our favorite dish of the meal. It was heat spicy but also Szechuan peppercorn tingly. The noodles were delicious and the meat was flavorful and tender. We are looking forward to visiting One Bite Dumpling many times in the future to try more tasty food. read more

My new favorite Chinese restaurant in Austin! Everything we had was delicious. Massive servings and great service.

Tucked into the corner of a totally unsuspecting step mall, this delightfully delicious shop is very stepped down cafe style. Not a lot of art or ambience, just mellow Asian pop music, a couple TVs, and generic tables. The waitstaff is friendly and definitely not in a rush to get you out of the store. Take your time, eat several courses, you won't be disappointed. We had chicken pot stickers (delightful with the surprising pops of sweet in the corn), BBQ pork buns (always a winner), beef chow me in (good, nothing fancy), beef & bok choi noodle soup (excellent hearty broth, heavy on the beef, a little light on bok choi), and the start of the show: pork soup dumplings. None of us had tried soup dumplings before and now we're all hooked. I knew it was gonna be good when I saw dark vinegar on the table with the soy sauce. Amazing, we will be returning. read more

I think this is a decent restaurant but I'm not giving it the 4.4 it's sitting at. Shrimp chowmein was lo mein( lo mein noodles with 0 crisp and mid flavor. The spicy chicken was good but I've had better ( wasn't very crispy and Sichuan river stir fry chicken is better for crispy spicy numbing chicken) ultimately this place wouldnt be rated as high in North Austin. So glad to have another option for Asian food in the south now! This place is a great option if you're looking for affordable and delicious Chinese food in the south Austin area. They have an extensive dim sum menu as well as meat and veggie dishes and some more Americanized Chinese dishes as well. We got the pork soup dumplings, the sautéed bok choy with garlic, and the Yangzhou fried rice. Everything was fresh and tasty. The service was quick and efficient if not a little rushed and the restaurant itself is clean. This is probably going to become a go-to place for me when I want Chinese food but don't want to go up north. read more

There is nothing like a strip mall dumpling shop to bring back memories of my years in Los Angeles. A fantastic addition to the South Austin food scene, this is that kind of place that pops into your head first when you're thinking takeout. Pretty much anything is going to be better in the shop, though. Soup dumplings aren't going to travel well. The beef scallion dumpling was standout. You really can't go wrong! OMG! The food was amazing, some of the best spicy chicken and pork bok choy pot stickers I've ever had. Must try.

Service was smooth and fast. We were so eager to try this new Chinese restaurant in south Austin, and it did not disappoint! We ordered the cucumber salad (must try), soup dumplings, braised beef noodle soup, and Mongolian beef. As someone who is allergic to shrimp, I was pleased to see their wontons are made of only pork which is very rare in Chinese spots. All were authentically delicious with decent portion sizes, and the service was very friendly. I do not understand all of these amazing reviews! I'm giving three stars and I feel that is very generous based on my experience and because they are new, so I'll cut them a little slack. First off, the service is extremely slow. After having been seated for quite a while, we had to flag down our server to place our order. We ordered 2 orders of pork soup dumplings for the table as an appetizer and it took 45 minutes to get them! We ordered a green onion pancake at the same time and it didn't come out for another 15 minutes. Also, the picture of the green onion pancake on the menu shows it being served with a bowl of sauce on a platter. When no sauce came with the pancake, I asked for it and she says we don't have any. It never comes with anything, just plain. Well, do you have anything to offer that we could dip it in? We were willing to pay for a sauce. She said no. Well that's misrepresentation right off the bat especially since there are no descriptions, only pictures on the menu. It appears they only had two servers for the entire place. It was not busy when we got there, but it was busier when we left, 2 hours later! Onto the food. The pork soup dumplings were cold. Based on the length of time it took to get them, I feel they must have been sitting there waiting to be delivered for a good while. Not only were they cold but they had zero flavor. My expectations were not overly high and they still failed. The green scallion pancakes were very doughy and did not seem cooked through. We also ordered the spicy chicken entrée for the table. Portion size was good. That's where the good stops. Again, the chicken was cold. It was also hard and dry and had a very funny flavor. We all agreed it didn't taste like the chicken was off, but that the seasoning was just awful. Also, because they do not put descriptions of the dishes on the menu, just pictures you could not tell that this chicken was fried. We thought it would be sautéed like all of the other spicy chicken dishes the three of us had elsewhere before. We probably left 75 to 80% of it plus a whole order of soup dumplings and were not even offered a box, which we would have declined but you would think with that much food left it would at least be offered. We sooo wanted to like this Chinese restaurant as there really are not any in South Austin to get excited about. The menu is large with a lot of nice offerings, too bad they couldn't deliver good food, and good service. The ambience was meh. Very plain. And the plates they give you to serve from the entrée platter are the size of small, saucers, way too small to accommodate anything without getting food on the table. They do have one smallish TV on a wall and it is lopsided and this restaurant just opened. I hope they get it together and do better. South Austin needs a good go to Chinese restaurant! I will not return, however, unless someone trusted tells me that I must try it again! read more

Was so excited to see a dumpling place so close to my stomping ground. Cool interior on a hot day was a nice touch. Waitress very attentive and brought a carafe of ice water so we wouldn't run out. Best won-ton chili oil in Austin. H&S soup very enjoyable (best was old Din Ho up North). Scallion pancakes Were nice and crispy. Last dish was dry pot cabbage which I had not had before. Very good if you're a fan of cabbage. I couldn't eat everything I wanted, so there are a lot of menu items yet to try! Can't wait. read more

I am a big fan. So happy that a dumpling place finally opened on the southside of town...even if it is way west. Until now, we would have to drive to Cedar Park any time we wanted reasonably priced Dumplings (Ling Wu is very good too, also west, like southwest pkwy west, and pricier for sure) They will come and take your order, but only have like 2 servers (as far as I can tell) so there is a QR code on the table and you can order directly that way. They use the ChowNow App. I love the selection of dumplings/potstickers/dim sum. I don't eat pork or shrimp, so I love that they have Beef, Chicken and Veggie options. I got the Chicken Pot stickers 2 days in a row, they are delicious They have slightly less entrée options, you won't find an extensive list of chicken entrees, but I did try the orange chicken and I really liked it. I have also tried the mongolian beef. That was good, but I like my beef slightly crispier, but it was still good. The garlic string beans are awesome, maybe my favorite dish that I tried there. Unfortunately the same dish with broccoli, I found the broccoli to be a little undercooked, and there wasn't enough sauce and the water that came out of the broccoli only made the sauce even thinner/watery. I think it could be a great dish with just some minor adjustments. I also got their crispy tofu. It didn't mention it would be spicy, and it was definitely spicy. I would get it again if I could get it less spicy, but I love that the tofu pieces are cut small so they get a good coating of batter and get crispy. The waitress said that their should have been an option for me to pick "mild" but I didn't see it on the app, so maybe for this particular dish, I will order it through the server. They close at 9:30 and are closed on Tuesdays. I am hoping that eventually they will be so busy they start staying open later. I am definitely going to be a regular here. read more

As a former patron of the old Hao Hao Asian restaurant I was curious to check out this new restaurant that just showed up in its place. Checking out their menu online seeing they offered my fave dish Mapo Tofu just enhanced my anticipation. The menu is full of the usual suspects, lots of noodle dishes that looked pretty interesting and of course, a trio of dumpling offerings - Potstickers, Steamed Dumplings and Soup Dumplings. We arrived only a few days after they officially opened so I wasn't surprised to see just a few tables occupied at first however by the time we left the place was quite busy. The staff is friendly, the place is clean and you can see into the area where they form the dumplings which is a nice touch. Looking at the high gloss menus I got the impression that this may be part of a chain and I did find other restaurants with the same name scattered around during a web search. OK...the food. The Mapo Tofu was excellent with just the right amount of "tingle" from the Szechuan Peppercorns, it came with a side of steamed rice. I've ordered this dish in many ATX Asian restaurants and their version is up there among my favorites. The Pork Soup Dumplings were bite-sized and filled with tasty pork and broth and were most enjoyable, they were offered up in a bamboo steam tray. My friend's Fried Calamari was tasty but kinda chewy, not entirely unusual for that dish. So I was pretty happy with the taste and quality of the foods we ordered. However...I found the portions to be smaller than expected which was kinda disappointing. After finishing my Mapo Tofu and rice plus half of the Soup Dumplings I was still kinda hungry, and I hate leaving a restaurant feeling unsatisfied. The soup dumplings are truly "one bite" in size but again, very tasty. I'm sure I will return, it's great to have seriously good Mapo Tofu so close to home, the drive up to Jollyville for my fave Mapo is a bit much these days. I would encourage One Bite Dumpling to offer more substantial portions but the quality overall was quite good. I look forward to trying some noodle dishes next time. read more
