Long ago our friends in North Slope introduced my wife and I to Olive Vine Cafe and we regularly lamented the fact that there was nothing similar near us. And so, we spent two years walking to North Slope in order to enjoy labana, pitzas (that's not a mispelling), and various other Mediterranean inspired fare. Clearly one of those years was spent in vain. As it turns out, for the past year, we have had a relative of Olive Vine here in Windsor Terrace (South Slope for anyone that's a fancy realtor). We actually inquired and this is literally a relative of Olive Vine; the guy that owns Bedawi is the cousin (or maybe nephew) of the guy that owns Olive Vine. And, from what I can tell, Cousin/Uncle did him a big favor and let him import the Olive Vine menu in its entirety. There are modest changes, but overall, it's basically a duplicate and, if you've been to Olive Vine, you'll probably agree that this is a good thing. The interior of the restaurant is laid out exactly like Olive Vine as well. It's a narrow space with several small tables up front and a walkway leading past the kitchen to the back. I have no idea if there is any outdoor space but there didn't seem to be a "Bedouin tent" type of area as there is at Olive Vine. I was there during the colder months and was seated up front. Because of the ovens, the front area gets a little toasty but it's manageable. Now that the weather is warmer, I'll have to head back to see if there is any outdoor seating. Bedawi is BYOB, so make sure to drop by your bodega of choice on the way. And once you get there, I'd recommend the labana. I still can't figure out what cured yogurt actually is or how to make it, but I do know it's flipping delicious. read more

Welcome to the neighborhood Bedawi Cafe! After a string of odd and unsuccessful businesses in this storefront, I'm very excited that a yummy middle eastern place is here! I stopped in for some takeout on my way home from work, and upon recommendation ordered the Falafel Platter (croquettes of ground chickpeas, minced garlic, copped onion, parsley, cilantro and their "special seasoning). At $7, its not a bad deal - it also comes with a green salad, some pita, and your choice of hummus or baba ghanouj. It all tasted very fresh - the salad bright green no skimping on the veggies, with just the amount of dressing/seasoning. Baba ghanouj was A-OK, and the croquettes not Earth shattering but plenty good. I also ordered the beet salad for a side which is spot on and not too oily. As I waited for my dinner, they gave me and everyone else who came in a lovely cup of mint tea and some baklava. Yum! The dining room is small and pleasant, but clearly they are going for the take-out crowd. I will definitely be stopping here again and welcome the new option! read more

Amazing staff (warm and welcoming, albeit a bit slow. Lovely ambiance - the garden is filled with waterfalls fountains and the tent-ceiling transports you to the small local cafe's that permeate the Arab world. decently priced with generous portions. We ordered the two house specials (the lamb plate and Chicken Ouzi) and the garlic Pita to start. Yusuf, the friendly Jordanian chap who ran the place, also threw in a couple OJ's on the house (in addition to surprising us with Basbousa at the end!). The food was underwhelming - the lamb didn't have too much flavor, although it was tender and juicy. Enjoyed the baba ghanoush it was served with, but the hummus just didn't hit the mark. The Chicken Ouzi is worth ordering for the aesthetic alone. Grilled chicken pieces, raisins, and rice are stuffed into a giant, hollow roll of pastry-bread (the texture on the shell was flaky, but the inside was a softer doughy bread). All of this came on top of a salad which in turn rested on a giant pita. A lot going on, artistically presented, and frankly fun to dig through. Again, however, we were disappointed by the flavor and the lack of meat. Fortunately, the had a house version of white sauce that was a notch above the stuff you'd normally find at a halal cart. 3.5 stars. OK food, great setting and service. read more

I live around the block from this new neighborhood spot and decided to check it out tonight. I was planning to just get some take-out baba ghannouj, but opted instead for the Assorted Plate ($8), a selection of 5 cold appetizers. My picks included the baba, tabbouleh, beet salad, potato salad, and spinach & chickpeas. Before I get to the food (which was delicious), I want to acknowledge and praise the friendly service. I've come to accept the cold-at-best-rude-at-worst attitude of many establishments, old and new. The men working at Bedawi were genuinely kind and attentive (but not smarmy!), even though I only ordered one take-out item. It was a very cold night, and they offered me and my dining companion some complimentary soothing honey-mint tea. They also sent us home with a complimentary piece of semolina honey cake (basbousa). At this point I hoped with all my might that the food would be as good as the service. Thankfully, it WAS. The baba was smokey and not overly tahini'd; the tabbouleh was heavier on green than grain and lemony; the beets and potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned (no mayo!); and the spinach & chickpea dish was tomato-y and topped with flavorful crispy onions. The plate came with homemade pita bread, which reminded me more of lavash (its thinner, stretchier, chewier cousin), and which was a hot, scrumptious companion to the baba. The basbousa was fantastic as well, like a moist honey cornbread. And the portion was very generous -- it easily fed two. I'm so pleased to have this cafe in the neighborhood -- I love supporting small businesses that recognize how far a little good will can go. Even though I'll usually return to a place with great food and sucky service, I very much appreciate not having to sacrifice one for the other. Two stomachs up! read more

We were greeted almost immediately by a charmingly shy young woman that we came to find out was the wife of the Jordanian owner. Despite being chilly, we opted for the back terrace, which wasn't overwhelmingly ambient but had enough middle eastern flair to add character to an already pleasant meal. The food was a mixed bag, running from average to excellent -- the falafel sandwich was only ok, but I liked my lamb sausage immensely and all of the sides (large, fresh pita, great hummus, baba ghanoush, salads) were just perfect. What pushes it to five stars for me is the exceptional value for the food -- Three people eating dinner, plus a shared dessert all for under 25 bucks? Amazing. Also: BYO -- In these tough economic times, this is one of the most amazing perks to the place! NOTE: Someone else complained about the bug zappers outside, and the sound of bugs getting sizzled can be a bit disconcerting. But I'd still rather that be the case than find myself get gnawed upon relentlessly throughout dinner :) read more

The worst Falafels everrrr! Super dry and flavorless. I was starving and unfortunately accidentally ordered the falafel platter dish. Sad. The hummus was okay. If you want some really tasty non-dry falafels with a kick I recommend this halal food stand in brooklyn bayridge on 86th street and 5th avenue. The best $3 or maybe it's $4 falafels! read more

Though I have not explored much of the menu at Bedawi Cafe each item that I have tried has been fantastic. The service is impecable. Not long ago a friend and I wandered in to grab a bite, we ordered some falafel to go and a salad appetizer. We were invited to sit down and have some mint tea while we waited. We did and both very much enjoyed the tea, and our food once tried that too. This may not sound like much but it was a great extra touch since our order came to something like $13. A great deal but also, hardly and order that you would expect to prompt the staff to go out of their way to make us comfortable. The interior is nothing fancy, but clean and peaceful. I am quite excited to check out the garden and more of the menu in the future. read more

FULL DISCLOSURE: I received a Yelp message encouraging me to try Bedawi and offering a free app. Nothing was offered as an incentive to write a review. It's nice to have Bedawi cafe in the neighborhood. There are already two other Middle Eastern restaurants in the neighborhood but both are terrible. My order took a while to prepare, but this may have been due to the odd time of day. I would recommend calling ahead if you are doing take-out. Friendly people. Tent area is nice for a hot day though it might look better if they replaced the cheap lawn furniture. BYOB/wine makes this a nice cheap date spot thought the ambiance is nothing special. Wine is available down the street towards the park. Excellent homemade pita. I also really enjoyed the well seasoned and juicy Merguez (lamb sausage.) The beet salad is my favorite. I can't explain what makes it so good but it is fantastic. Iced mint tea was pretty good too. Highly recommended overall. read more

From the moment I walked into this place, I knew the food would be great. I stumbled upon Bedawi Cafe one day, starving, and as soon as I walked in I was hit with the amazing aroma of spices and herbs. I ordered the assorted salad and my boyfriend ordered the chicken platter. You're able to choose 4-5 items for the assorted salad, and every single thing on my plate was amazing. STAY AWAY. My boyfriend and I ordered from seamless.com last night. We're new to the neighborhood, recently moved from Bay Ridge and missed good Halal food. We still do. Even with the first time discount from seamless of 20% this place wasn't worth it. The falafel was some of the worst we've ever had (and there wasn't even any white sauce on the sandwich!!) It was burnt and dry and flavorless. The small side of tahini sauce was brown and watery. .... and to top it all off, we both woke up this morning with food poisoning. Omg the food here is soooo good and so cheap. It's one of my favorite places to get takeout or delivery from in the area. The food tastes fresh, like the ingredients are well-sourced and everything was cooked recently. I like everything I've gotten from this place, from the (very affordable) sandwiches to the cold appetizer platter (which can definitely be a meal unto itself - I recommend the baba ganouj) to the pizzas. BYOB, reasonable (I'll say it, cheap!) prices, amazing flavor, correct portions, fantastic service. To date, this is our least expensive and one of our best tasting meals in Brooklyn. We got the appetizer sampler with a little bit of everything. Their Baba Ganoush is fabulous and the grape leaves are flavorful with the perfect amount of brine. For our entreés we got the lamb special and the chicken ouzi. Here is a tip, mix them! The cardamom really brings out the lamb. Turkish coffee and some complimentary cake topped us off for the evening. A wonderful night in the backyard garden of Bedawi. Try this place out! read more

Staff is amazing, byob is great. Really nice backyard. The food is just average, but it's very cheap and the ingredients are all fresh/prepared well. Grape leaves are alright, a little dense and dry. Baba ghanouj and hummus are both thin and lemony, but well balanced. Labneh is delicious. Mujadarrah was good, but onion were a little burnt. Beet salad was incredibly delicious, acidic and tangy. Falafel is a bit dry, but also well seasoned and fluffy. The pita comes out warm and floury. Lamb with pickles is balanced and maybe my favorite. Tahini is plain and unseasoned, but good moisture/fat for the falafel. read more

It's ok. I only went here once because my Belarusian roommate used to like the place so much. Why? I have no idea. True, they have a backyard and it's BYOB. You just know the restaurant is family-owned the moment you walk in because of how you are treated. That's a big plus. But the food is rather unimpressive. The Middle-Eastern Pizza is rather flavorless. It took us a little too long until we finally had our food. The roomie is still flabbergasted. I never went back. There is a really good Falafel place a few blocks down, just across from Prospect Park. Those falafels are truly amazing! read more

Bedawi Cafe is a hidden gem in South Slope/Windsor Terrace. I followed the garlicky aroma into this tiny, beautifully decorated, middle-eastern eatery which specializes in Bedouin cuisine. Everything I've had from here has been EXTREMELY delicious, always fresh, uniquely flavored and quickly prepared! *The spinach pie-not like the Greek kind, served inside a pita, very yummy. *The lamb pizza-is a revelation. Perfect combo of ingredients, good crust. *The chicken platter-the chicken is expertly marinated in a blend of lemon and spices, and is tender and char-grilled to perfection. I can not stress how good this chicken was. Comes with rice, salad and mint mayo which I think is a pretty good deal for $10. ***Most importantly the assorted cold salads!-the beet are to die for and the Labana (yogurt sauce) is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Hummus is also really good. Mostly everything comes with pita which is always served warm and slightly toasted (also not the Greek kind-large and hollow on the inside, light). Also it's always the same gentleman who is pleasant, kind and sometimes gives free mint tea (the mint tea is also AMAZING). I always get a very zen vibe from being inside and I can't wait to try the back patio this summer. I highly recommend this place! read more

There was a time when this was my favorite takeout restaurant in the area.Tonight a friend went to order for us and requested chicken orzo. They were out of it and suggested lemon chicken as a substitute. It was inedible. Not just dry, but actually burned. So out of this plate the only thing to eat was the rice - very plain and blah - and the salad, which was at least acceptable. Bedawi Cafe is my favorite neighborhood restaurant and delivery. I love the freshness and flavor of all their food. The homemade pita are fantastic. The babaganoush, humus, salads, pizzas and meals are fantastic. I've been coming here and ordering from here for over 5 years and have never been disappointed. I love the chicken sandwich/platter, the merguez is delicious and spicy, and the lamb is always delicious. How have more people not reviewed this place?? My friends and I came here for dinner for the first time, and all left upset that we hadn't been before! I got the lamb leg platter and it was Huge. Enough for an average eater to take leftovers home. Me? Not so much. The breakdown: The pita bread was warm and delicious. BYOB is always a plus (they don't even charge a corkage fee!) Staff was friendly. Wish they accepted credit. Place was clean and decently lit/decorated I hope they have outdoor seating come summer, though, as the dining room only has about 12 chairs and even that felt cramped. This place is about as good as cheap gets. Order the 5-app platter. Avoid the pickled eggplant with walnuts. Go for the labana, the beets, the fava, and, most importantly, the spinach chickpea. The hummus was lackluster but fine with everything else. The ouzi is good. A little on the dry side but cinnamony and great. It arrived on a strange platter of lettuce and salad. I wish they'd been separated out but it was nice to have the extra veggies. The wait staff could not be nicer. The backyard is charming. The dining room is REALLY tiny so I don't know if it's a great place to go when it's not nice out. I haven't ordered delivery but I bet it's great. Our entire dinner cost under $25 for two people plus the bottle of wine we brought with us. We will be back. read more

This is my favorite spot in the neighborhood. The prices are so cheap and the food is always delicious. The pita that their sandwiches comes on is unreal. Very soft and chewy. I mostly stick to the falafel sandwich but I have had most of the cold appetizers and they are all very good. The beet salad and babaganoush stand out. I am not a big dessert person but the Basbousa is a delicious semolina cake with honey but not too sweet. They are also going above and beyond with COVID safety. read more

This is a lovely place: The people are delightful and so is the food. My favorite is the leg of lamb. Tender, delicious lamb, fresh salad and absolutely fresh Arabic bread, baked on the spot. When you come in for take-out they give you mint tea. The place is warm, beautiful, and smells fantastic. Prices are very reasonable. Plus they are getting ready to open their outside garden!
