This review is more about Ziggy's next door but honestly the workers at Beantown were just as bad. I was with a party of 7 looking for a place to sit down and have a drink along the freedom trail. It was early so the Pub next door wasn't open yet. We entered the coffee bar and stood in the small space between the door and the counter looking for an area that could fit all 7 of us. As we looked around, a woman at the counter said, very loudly, "you'll have to move while you decide, you can't stand in front of the door." We were literally there 30 seconds. Her tone was not welcoming and actually quite mean. As we moved toward the back we found a high top bar that would accommodate all of us. We asked a new server if it was ok to sit there. She said," No, can't you see that section is closed?" So we were in the building for 2 minutes and were already treated rudely by two different employees. We decided to leave and not give our business or our tip to people who clearly didn't care whether they made money or not. Customer service was abysmal. I don't recommend for any happy tourists visiting from out of town. They are miserable and will lower your impression of the beautiful city of Boston. read more

This is my go-to place. I've been going here since freshman year and it's never anything but a good time. The bartenders are great, good, cheap beer, and always a fun crowd. I would have given it 5 stars except for my awful waitress last night Thursday 9/11. Being in the service industry myself, I expect to be treated with respect when I go out. Anyways, my friend and I sat down at a table (no hostess, it's not a formal place...so what) and our server came over and instead of greeting us said "Do you mind getting your next round from the waitstaff?" instead of just giving us menus as we were going to get food and beer from her... We were nothing but pleasant to her and not ONCE did she say thank you or smile. Our waitress had long blond hair, tall. The other waitress, dark hair, was very pleasant and we wish we had her. We then moved to the bar where we got our usual friendly service. I will go back, but never sit at a table again! Owner should get a more friendly server. The bar was half empty last night and the bartender stared at the television with more interest than he had in serving customers. The workers acted as if the customers were disturbing them. Great place to come to after a hard day's work on a Wednesday or a Thursday. The beers can be a bit pricey ($5.50 for a bud light lime, my usual drink of choice), but oh well. The bartenders are awesome as well, especially the Remen brothers, Mr. Egan, Corey, Willie, Jamie, Barry... you all know who you are! You never fail to provide awesome and attentive service! Keep it up! As a regular, I can honestly say that once the staff know who you are, you're golden. I cannot say a single bad thing about the food. From the burgers and the fries to the chicken parm, Beantown has it all. Again, it may be a bit pricey, but it is Boston, after all, but completely worth it. All in all, this is an awesome place to stop in, have some drinks, throw a few tunes on the jukebox, and even an occasional game of pool to destroy any job stress from a crazy day at work, which is something I know all too well. For these reasons, among others, I shall remain a loyal regular to Beantown in the foreseeable future. Five stars all around! read more

I go here every few months, usually before or after a movie and for what it is it's pretty good. The food is slightly better than your typical pub grub but the facility is out of dat and it get absolutely packed in there which leads to slow service fairly often. It's also not completely out of the ordinary to see 1 or 2 flies roaming around which can really put a damper on a date night meal especially if you two are still getting to know each other. I should also mention that they have games and billiards in the back of the bar which I imagine is more of the setting they are going for. As a pool hall the food is great but up against the other pre movie dinner spots in the area I feel that they are underwhelming. read more

I had a budget of $10.00 it came to $11.75 plus tip. I made this mistake and said I couldent do this beer.He was So Mature,Respectful,Kind. He said give me the Ten call it even. Did not even go in because the bouncer was so rude. He gave us a hard time with our ids, though there was no line behind us. He also made a rude comment when he noticed we were from Los Angeles. After his rude response when we asked him if ESPN was on, we decided to leave. (Keep in mind, we still hadn't entered the bar.) As we turned around, he yelled "Now you want to leave? whatever!" The bartender that 'served' us was the WORST! It was a busy Friday night when we came and I get that but I've been in lots of busy bars and don't think I've ever had such terrible 'service'. She was annoyed by any questions about the drinks and/or menu. If we got her attention to ask a question she would provide and short answer in an annoyed tone and then say something like "I'll let you think about it" and then we wouldn't see her again for another 10-15min. The food was actually really good but while I was still eating, grated not at that exact moment, she flies by says nothing to us and grabs and busses our plates!?!?! Who does that?!?!? Was here for at least 3 hours with coworker and Mike the bartender and manager paid no attention. We had to ask for every single drink. He asked what we were drinking every time and our drinks didn't change. Was told he's "having a bad day". Then stay home Mike. When I have a bad day my client shouldn't have to suffer. One word - racist. This review is long overdue and I'm actually surprised that I didn't write it a long time ago. It is possible that they've changed for the better - one can only hope - but quite frankly, I vowed never to return after a very unpleasant experience and as such have not. In a nutshell, a group of fellow evening law students decided to grab a drink next door following our last final of the semester. We hung to the back of the bar, near the pool tables, and cheered the fact that we'd survived. Unprovoked, a group of drunk townies, who were at one of the nearby pool tables, started acting fairly aggressively toward our group. One of the (white) guys in our group, tried to head them off calmly, but found that wasn't working so he and another (black) guy from our group decided to speak with the bouncer. The townies chase our friends to the bouncers and say we're the ones causing the problem. Next thing we know, the bouncers evict the one black guy who initially approached them, but do nothing about the townie troublemakers. Outraged, much of our group approaches the bouncers and manager and complain. What happens next? The bouncers decide to evict the one other black guy in our group and no one else. In complete disbelief, we again approach the manager and point out to him that not only was this situation improperly addressed, but is smells strongly of racism. His only response is to shrug his shoulders and walk away. To make matters worse, their food is sub-par. I only bothered patronizing them in the first place because they were the closest bar to the law school. read more

After taking a stroll through Boston Commons on an extremely cold Sunday, we ended up at this pub to warm up. We spent the rest of the afternoon drinking beers and playing pool. The beer selection was large, there was a decent jukebox and plenty of open pool tables - a perfect combination for wasting away a Sunday. read more

The bartender was super nice, although the beer list is your typical domestic macro brew garbage. But I'm not there to sample nice beers, I was there to watch the Bruins. I had a decent burger, although I asked for medium rare and it came out well done. We left at the end of the second period, roughly 930pm, and headed home. 11:30pm I wake up and sit bolt upright in bed, alarm bells ringing from my stomach to my brain warning me that this is NOT a drill. I sprint to the porcelain throne and make it just in time for my face to turn into Mt. Vesuvius, and I promptly deposit said burger into the (eventual) Charles River water supply. I spent the next 18 hours sprinting to and kneeling in front of the 1.5 gallon per flush altar, alternating my orifices like I was getting Eiffel-Towered by porcelain gods. I do not sleep. Now, in the grand scheme of things, $33 for an 18 hour experience in the City of Boston is a downright bargain; hell, just a walking tour of the North End runs over $100! That being said, this was not the kind of experience I was aiming for, and it still feels like there's a pair of rats in my stomach trying to chew their way to freedom. To the Beantown Pub: you should probably throw out whatever ingredients you used in the Beantown Burger before you accidentally kill off somebody's granny. Sorry if my fellow Yelpers aren't hungry anymore after reading this relatively graphic review, but that's the point. I sure as shit (heh) won't be heading to the Beantown Pub next time I've got a hankering for a good old fashioned burger. read more

A pretty chill place to hang out with co-workers after work and play a little pool, drink a few beers. Not a place I would normally hang out at otherwise though. Seems like after a certain time, the clientele switches from locally-employed folk to popped-collar douchenozzles and (possibly underaged) half-naked sorority girls. read more

Going to the Bean Town Pub at 1:00pm for lunch on a week day sounds like a great idea but when my 2 cousins and I went there it was an awful experience! When we entered the Pub there were a few groups of people having lunch but the place was not packed. Instead of sitting us in the front bar area which was welcoming and warm, the hostess took into the back of the restaurant, through a room of pool tables, and into a room that resembles something Uncle Vinny and the Italian Mafia would go to for a "family dinner". The tables were not set, we have no silverware, the booths were velvet blue and the temperature was several degree colder and we were the only ones to set in this separate room. The waitress was fine, one of us ordered the grilled cheese and friends and 2 of us ordered the Sam Adams chicken, Cajun sandwich, sounds good right? Being one group of only a few groups to come in for lunch, the 3 sandwich order took OVER 45 minutes! How long does a grilled cheese take? The Sam Adams chicken sandwich was awful. It was not flavored, let alone, Cajun spiced, there was a soggy, mayonnaise mess on the bottom of the bun and the chicken was cold. You can get better chicken on a bun at KFC. When my cousin and I went to the bathroom it was clear that there was NO heat on in there, just to top off the entire experience. Even getting our check took more time than it should and there was no one left in the Pub when we left. It was so empty there was a girl at the bar doing homework on her laptop. I probably wont be going back unless there is $1 drafts. read more

Service is very inconsistent and if you get the wrong bartender, borderline (?) racist! I've been here a few times, both for a casual drink and also to play some pool with friends, which is always nice. Some of the servers who took orders near the pool tables were friendly enough, but I had the most horrible experience at the front bar one night. It was not a very busy night and I sat at the bar to order a beer. The two or three people attending the bar did not so much pay attention to me for a good five or ten minutes. Instead, they were too busy schmoozing with some white patrons who already had their drinks. By then, I was pretty annoyed, but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and stuck around. I finally was asked gruffly what I wanted and I told them which beer I wanted. The male bartender then proceeded to take his time getting my drink. When he finally brought me a coaster, he didn't look and just tossed it at me so that I literally had to catch it from falling to the floor. He then poured my draught beer and spilled it all over the sides of the glass before roughly slamming it down in front of me. I don't know why I need to put up with this in Boston, of all places, when I just want to enjoy a cold one! read more

This place just sort of happens every once in a while. Sort of like running into a friend who you haven't seen in a long time who you really don't have a ton to talk about with. Beantown Pub has beer, and booze, and food, and bar stools, and TV's and crowds. It is convenient as it is smack dab more or less in the center of Boston and there is a sidewalk in front. People walk on that sidewalk. Lot's of people. This is a convenient spot for Suffolk folk to mingle at as it is near most of the Suffolk campus. It is also a great spot for hitting the bathroom when you really, really have to go. It's very Boston old timey, i.e., think of the theme song to Cheers but with law school dudes screaming at each other over it while you slowly lose your nerves as you try to drink quietly at the bar. read more

I love, love,LOVE this place! I am here at least twice a week if not more and prefer to sit at the bar. The two guys you have working back there (unfortunately with the year since I've been coming here I don't know their names, sorry) but they work all the time and they are great at their jobs and super personable. I always look forward to seeing them and them making my favorite Long Island and vodka pineapples. The food is great too-I always go for their fries or mozzarella wedges. Being a manager for a corporate restaurant, I try to always leave reviews (particularly good ones) because I know how much it sucks that a majority of yelpers just leave reviews for bad experiences-making the overall restaurant look worse-not to mention I can assume most of them have never worked in a restaurant and have no idea what they are talking about. A little piece of me died when I was told that we would be going to the Beantown Pub for after work drinks on a Friday. All because a friend really needed a beer but couldn't walk too far due to a knee injury. Knowing full well that this place would make a freshly clubbed Nancy Kerrigan gimp-run the other way, I braced myself and hoped that after an hour said friend would somehow muster up the strength to move on. I don't see the appeal of this place at all. It's a tourist trap with slow service and mediocre food. There are a handful of better restaurants and bars around it. And the clientele is... interesting. And scary. Luckily after a few rounds we were able to encourage our gimp friend to find her inner She Hulk and move on to somewhere better. read more

A raw pub that, well, it's raw when it wants to be. The front can be impossible to walk through. And where it can get a little weird with the drunk regulars. The back is good for when you want that break. The food is pretty good, although there have been times when it's been overdone. Sometimes it's a little hard to get a waitress' attention. I've been in this establishment several times over the past 5 years. And like anything, it has ups and downs. However, reading some of these reviews causes me to wonder if some people have the ability to appeal to everyone. It's a pub! A casual place to drink with friends or meet new ones. It doesn't say Pool Hall out front. It doesn't say fine dining. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't say "feel free to take your crappy existence out on a server because it cost 5 bucks". I had to write this because I am tired of going to pubs and watching snobby, ignorant, inconsiderate, demanding, miserable people walk around like the world exists to make them feel important. Stop going to pubs if you don't like them. The smells, attitudes, and service come with the laid back rules that don't include covers, dress codes, or strict consumption limits. As a drinker, I've come to the realization, that drunks can f**k stuff up. And if you don't like "cheer" or spreading it....................stay home and be happy about the money you saved being an RA in college. Fun Cops are the worst.
