We caught a late dinner here. Weather was beautiful outside and we could still catch the live music. Kitchen closes at 10 and we slid in under the wire and had great food Sheppard pie, super creamy clam chowder, lobster rolls - all excellent

I went here on a visit to Boston. It was a fun place with live music and an excellent traditional Irish menu. I had a Reuben and fries and it was very good. Service was friendly. Nice historic place with a great vibe and location.

One of my favorite pubs in Boston. No frills just great drinks, ambiance, and pub food. Christine is my favorite and she cracks me up. I hope to see her during marathon monday! Also great pub food!

We were in Boston in April for a concert and some friends recommended the black rose. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday. We were seated quickly and we were also waited on efficiently. My daughters had the burger and we had the pretzel and potato skins. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Portions were good sizes and the food was fresh, flavorful and hot. There is live music later in the day.

This restaurant always had people waiting to be seated so I had to stop by while on my trip! I got the New England clam chowder and the Boston dip with a salad. Both were great! The meat was so tender and flavorful for the sanwhich. I definitely understand why there was a line. There was also live music since it was Friday night and the performer was great! This will be added to the list of local restaurants whenever I am in town.

    Irish Trio

This place was by our hotel and seemed very popular so we decided to check it out and have dinner. We went in and it was a 45 minute wait. We went to the very crowded bar area and ordered drinks. The service at the bar was quick with being how busy they were. We were buzzed for our table. We got a great table by the stage. Not right next to it. There was a table between the stage and us. The first waitress checked on us then disappeared. We waited awhile before our order was taken. Eventually another waitress came over and helped us. She was great! I noticed the first waitress left. I ordered onion soup and the lobster roll and my husband got the trio. The soup was delicious and the lobster roll was ok, nothing to brag about. The trio had great flavor. The music was fun (Frank Ryan). He interacted with the crowd. We enjoyed a shot of Jameson and my husband had Guinness. This was a fun pub. Even though there were 2 birthday parties going on in this tiny pub, the service was great. I felt bad for the staff and anybody who had to squeeze by them but the staff was very friendly about it.

My husband and I came here for St. Patrick's Day lunch and had a great time. We arrived around 10am and Florjan B., the nicest guy, was our server. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the corned beef dinner entree (very good). Great Irish coffees and Irish beers, amongst other drinks on the menu. They had Irish rock playing, followed by a live band. We had no wait arriving as early as we did, but there was more of a crowd when we left, around 11:30. A lot of cool merch for sale in the host section as well.

Let me start by saying -- my husband absolutely loved this place! We visited The Black Rose on our first day in Boston and loved it so much that we came back a few days later. During our first visit, we ordered a few drinks -- a shot of Jameson, a Guinness, and a martini -- all excellent. We started with the Corned Beef & Cabbage Spring Rolls, which I'd highly recommend. For our mains, we had the Fish and Chips and the Irish Spice Bag, and my husband couldn't stop raving about how good everything was. We even picked up a Christmas ornament from the gift shop to remember our visit! Our server was from Switzerland and had such great energy -- super friendly and made the experience even better. When we returned a few days later, we tried the Irish Coffees and both the hot and cold lobster rolls -- and honestly, we still can't decide which one was our favorite because they were both amazing. The Black Rose has such a fun, welcoming atmosphere, and it quickly became one of our favorite spots in Boston. We'll definitely be back every time we visit the city!

This is a classic Irish bar in Boston and my personal favorite. Have been coming here for 25 years. Great Guinness and a great lively atmosphere. Comfortable spot though it can get a bit crowded. Live music is on quite often. Location in Faneuil Hall and is adjacent to North End if you want to pre game or post game dinner.

Irish bar with many many whiskeys and scotches. Stop there for apps and a couple of drinks and had great service and a very fun time You walk inside and you feel like you're in an Irish pub

    Fish bites

Wasn't super hungry so had the fish bites appetizer. Very good, the breading wasn't super heavy. Friend had the sausage rolls. They weren't as good as others she's had, but they were nice enough to swap the coleslaw for a full size salad for no charge. We would go back, especially to hear the live music they have every night.

This is a stereotypical Irish pub restaurant, in the heart of Boston in the Faneuil Hall area. Drinks were tasty, but could be a little slow- not a huge surprise considering how popular it seems to be. I was happy to find they offered a hot (CT style) buttered lobster roll. Prices reflected lobster industry prices this season with a bit of a tourist "tax" built in, nothing to complain about. The roll was loaded with lobby meat, the bread was decent. I thought the butter was a smidge on the light side, but overall a really good sandwich!

    Jameson wings were great

This first timer had a great timer! lol. Atmosphere was festive. House was packed every time we walked by. We finally got a chance to get a table. The food was hot and fresh!!!!!

Had the Guinness and it was a bit watery compared to the ones we had in other pub. Still delicious though.

The place was hyped up online but when we got there, it was not what we expected and just went right back to AT O'Keeffe's for dinner! Although I don't eat burgers cause they are too filling, I ordered the smash burger. It was delicious! The calamari was so perfect! Best I've ever had. We also ordered the chicken wings and had to try the fish and chips. Everything was amazing. The only thing we didn't really go for was the clam chowder. Even though it was more authentic then some other places we had it at for our Boston chowder marathon, the potatoes were cut too big and it wasn't as thick and creamy as we like. Again, Thank You Darius for being such a great server! We appreciate the quick service and attention - from 5 hungry girls on Friday night!

The walls tell stories, the lighting is comfortably dim, and the place feels genuinely lived-in rather than styled for Instagram. It's the sort of space that invites lingering, conversation, and a pint or two more than you planned. The food is solid if not exceptional, hitting the marks you expect from a Boston institution of its kind. You won't find inventive plating or culinary surprises here, but that's not what JJ Foley's is about. It's a place that trades innovation for consistency, which in itself has value. The main drawback comes when the place fills up. Service becomes noticeably strained, and something as simple as getting a drink refill can take long enough to test your patience. When it's quieter, the staff are friendly and attentive, but at peak hours the experience slides from cozy to crowded. Still, JJ Foley's endures not because it's perfect, but because it knows exactly what it is: an honest, old Boston pub that's still standing tall while others try to chase trends. It's imperfect, familiar, and worth the visit.
