EDIT: The following is my review of this restaruant. It is not edited in any way. I'm adding this because I think its important to enter every review with open eyes, and report what I experience in my reviews. Indeed, I spent the first four paragraphs PRAISING the place for what I saw.
Apparently, this was too much for Thiraphan S, the chef/owner of Basilic. And apparently Thiraphan, is very sensitive about constructive critisism. So much, so in fact. That he altered his comments to me SEVEN TIMES. I never replied to him once. They just kept getting worse.
Thirapin admonished me for not knowing that the stupidly obscure small rice portions are due to the desire not to be wasteful. I was also expected to know that Thiriphan spent 15 years working for various chefs all over the world, that he's using his grandmother's recipes, etc.
This situation finally downgraded itself to that I am no longer welcome there. This guy is not only incompetent asshole, but a thin-skinned one. DONT EAT HERE.
Freshly opened in the two-block swath of asian restaruants on Roy, Basilic Thai occupies the space that was held by Thai Heaven and most recently, Henry's Tiawan Bistro. Already nearby are Bamboo Garden and Pho Viet Anh. And down the street a little further, the regional Thai Champion. I apologize in advance. I have to wax poetic about all of this. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. Lets begin.
A thoughtful and useful tool is the online ordering. What will be a necessity in the future for almost all restaruants, isn't something you usually see already set up for a startup. It shows a little industry moxie. But Basilic has one fatal flaw. It is spitting distance from my very favorite thai spot in the city, and one of the longest running ones. So to my mind, if you're gonna be here, you'd better have your shit together on the plate.
Entering Basilic I'm struck by how dark it is in there. The lights are super low, the paint is super dark with darker wood accents. The dining room is open but the tables, especially those next to the windows, have a private appearance to them. If you're insecure about your looks, I've found your Tinder meet up spot. The server that greeted me was super-friendly and welcoming. There is good energy here.
Basilic also gets a brownie point for menu creativity. There are some dishes on there that don't fall under what I would call, Americanized Thai Fare, I want to try that rack of lamb curry and thai fish cake. They also place an emphasis on their teas. Another option lacking at other Thai restaruants. Its becoming clear to me that whomever the brains are behind this has done this before. I'm impressed by how veteran Basilic feels even though its only been open a few weeks.
But what a bout the food? I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken Wings and, of course, the Panang. in order to try and be fair, I always order the panang from any thai restaruant I try for the first time. Its a simple dish, you can get a taste what they're about and if they're a bunch of spice monkeys in the back, you can catch a break with the coconut milk. I ordered 2 stars on a scale of 0-5, so middle.
The wings were well done and crispy, with a nice kind of glaze on the outer skin. However, the wings were not very meaty. The sauce was sweet on sweet, and I tasted absolutely zero lemongrass. Perhaps I'm just spoiled from my last wing experience, but even though they were tasty, I don't think I need to have them again. The panang is thinner than I tend to like it, and darker in color. Interesting heat where most thai food merely slaps you directly in the face, this curry had a slow building burn to it I enjoyed. The flavors are complex, but I would have really liked to taste a more refined version of this curry. The too-few pieces of chicken in it were chewy. The peppers had a nice julienne cut to them, which as a cook I appreciated. But the bloom came off when I went looking for the rice.
Most thai places will give you a healthy serving of rice with your meal. Rice is inexpensive, easy to make, and filling. It is not the part of the meal you should ever run out of. My meal, came with a laughably small container of rice that did not come close supporting the ammount of curry. This to me is unacceptable. The poor meat/veg ratio in the curry can be accepted. They're new and can figure that out. This tiny rice thing? Someone made that decision. Not exactly a red flag, but something to keep in the ol grey matter, especially if you like this place and it ever starts to waver...
$23 and I was left both disappointed and a little confused. Now, they're new and it is so apparent that everyone there is working really hard and wants the place to do well. So I'm going to give them a second try. But I'm going to give this restaruant a litte more time in the bottle to iron out the wrinkles and correct some mistakes being made before doing so. Especially when I can merely walk one block further east for the best. read more
