I had a very bad experience at Basil. When we checked in with the manager I asked if he could seat us in a quiet section. There are four sections of the restaurant, three of which were quiet. Instead of seating us there he seated us near a party of eight noisy people and a baby. I went back to the host station and asked to be moved to one of the other sections, His response was that the other sections would soon be filled and that we would would be better off where we were. As the evening wore on more large groups were seated in our section making it even noisier. We couldn't even hear ourselves think let alone carry on a conversation. The dinner experience was completely ruined. As we left I noticed that none of the much quieter sections were filled at all. I went to the register a final complaint to the manager as we left but he was nowhere to be found. DO NOT GO TO Basil if you're looking for an enjoyable dining experience! read more

I know this spot is a local favorite, but for me it is seriously hit or miss. Many of the people who work there are super nice and friendly- the younger bar tender in the back is really sweet and Victor is always a great guy, very accommodating and patient/friendly. There is one sever, an older woman with brown hair who usually serves in the bar in the back, who is rude every time she serves us. I felt uneasy the entire time she was waiting on me, as if I was being a bother for dining there. Also, the food didn't seem it's best the last time I was in. I ordered the chicken parm and the chicken tasted like it had gone slightly bad, tough and chewy. Not the best dining experience I've had. read more

I love Basil's this place is comfortable, reseasonblely priced and the food is exceptional. I take my friends from the city here and they love it. The wait staff has been there for a long time. Which says something about the restaurant. It's consistent. My fav's are the butternut squash ravioli, the chicken piccata, and the filet florentine delish. The baked half chicken always moist with a crispy skin and a corn bread stuffing that's just sweet enough to hit the spot is a great selection during the cold months. Called this a.m. to ask if they had room for a party of 6 at 6:30 and was told no. The restaurant called me back 10 minutes later to say that actually they did have tables available. We found this odd, but figured that, as the night before Mother's Day, it might be busy. Sure was. We arrived slightly late, was seated quickly, friendly waitress came around quickly, drinks round and ordering process happened promptly. Then......the wait..... .....a wait for the apps (the clam zuppa had to come off the check ultimately, as I discovered one that was full of sand)....a wait for the entrees (just in time -- my 9 year old son was about to track our server down on the floor to ask where they were). We were finally served at 8:10. What's more, the plates stayed in front of us for at least 15 minutes after we'd finished. I've had perfectly acceptable experiences at Basil before, although we don't come that often. The food is pretty good -- some things are executed better than others, as other reviewers have indicated. But, boy oh boy! In future I'll avoid this place during peak hours and nights. Clearly they do not have the manpower to consistently execute end to end, from front to back of house. Our server really could have used some assistance, and obviously the kitchen staff was spread thin -- or maybe they simply accepted more reservations than what they actually realistically can support. Running a restaurant is difficult; perhaps the folks at Basil sometimes bite off more than they can chew. read more

Basil's Pub is my favorite place for a spur of the moment dinner with a friend. When you walk in you feel like family and everyone is friendly. The food is delicious including the unique basket of bread, the onion soup and crab cakes which is my favorite way to begin. Basil's Restaurant is elegant and comfortable. I've gone many times to celebrate special family events and we always finish our dinner by saying "We never get a bad meal at Basil's". Basil's catering by Tom, the owner and chef, has been a good experience. Tom has catered large gatherings at my home for me. His ability to calmly put up with last minute changes and always makes the client feel he is not only listening but that he cares about you. Basil's gets 5 stars from me. read more

I usually sit in the bar area when I go to basil. But the last few times I have not been impressed. The service was HORRIBLE! There were about 3 tables all seated within 10 mins, including ours. We were the first to sit and the last to be greeted/served. The specials were not offered by the server as they were to every other table and we had to ask. She never came back to check on us to see if anyone needed anything or if the food was ok. It was clear we were her last priority--which is sad because we frequent there quite often. The food was OK but because the service was so horrible, I do not see us going back anytime soon. I've also heard this from a few people around Medfield and its quite disappointing. Also, they NEVER change the menu. You would think with a remodeling of the inside, you would change up the menu a little bit but nothing was changed. Very disappointing. read more

Probably the worst service I've ever had... The food was good (I had risotto with shrimp, wife had chicken parm.) and the wine list was ok, but I've never had service like it! Our server acted like any request was an imposition. We ordered a bottle of wine for the table and he "filled" the glasses on the tray stand and brought them over 2 in each hand. (We were a party of 7.) he dropped the check at the beginning of desert. We left a 10%tip (more than he should've gotten) and he confronted me about it on my way out. When the staff pulls you aside and apologies for the actions of the owner, you know you are in a bad restaurant and that is exactly what happened to us. We made reservations for 5 and had one person back out. As soon as we arrived to the restaurant we told them we were down to 4. We never tried to hide it. The owner/hostess said OK and that she would call us when our table was ready. 45 minutes later when we checked in with her again we were told our reservation was "null and void" for "lying" about our reservation numbers! Seriously, the owner is nut case and does not deserve a dime from the public. read more

First I want to say that I used to like this restaurant. The food, while not the best I've ever had, isn't usually horrible. However after my experience there last Saturday night, 11/17/12, I will NEVER go there again. I made a reservation for 5 people for dinner at 7:30. Our 5th person unfortunately canceled on us earlier in the evening. The owner was working as the hostess this evening, and I told her immediately that we were now a party of 4. She instantly gave me a very dirty look and copped a major attitude. But she said our table wasn't quite ready and we could wait in the bar. Finally at 8:00 I went out and inquired about our table. She told me that because we were no longer a party of 5, she canceled our reservation and we had to wait for the next available table for four. I explained that this didn't seem fair, and that I didn't feel we should be punished for someone canceling on us, but she basically called me a liar and said this was how it is. When I asked how long she thought the wait for a table for 4 would be, she said, "I have no idea." That's when I started to get angry. I simply said, "This is wrong." But went back to explain the situation to my friends. One friend (let's call her Mindy) decided she was going to talk to the owner too. As soon as Mindy told her who she was, the owner made her go outside into the foyer to discuss this because she didn't want Mindy to "make a scene". Neither of us had made a scene, and were being incredibly kind and patient considering how we were being treated! The owner then lied to Mindy saying that I said our 5th person was running late, and that's why she gave up our table. I never said that! After trying to reason with the owner, and getting yelled at and lied to, Mindy expressed frustration and the owner basically said we had to leave. Which we were more than happy to do at that point anyway. As we left I told the owner that it was the worst customer service I had ever seen. We went down the street to the Noon Hill Grille and had a lovely dinner served by equally lovely people. It is clear the owner/management of Basil Restaurant feels they can treat customers with nasty attitudes and lies. It is my strong recommendation that you spend your valuable money at a better restaurant. I know I don't want my hard earned dollars going to any business who feels customer service isn't important. read more

Very pleased with our first dining experience at Basil. Loved the atmosphere and the waiter was very good. Best part was the food. I had the chicken, veal and shrimp marsala (minus the veal) and am very picky about marsala. The sauce was delicious. My husband had the special which was 1/2 chicken stuffed with cornbread stuffing with side dish of fresh butternut squash. Delicious. So happy there is a good restaurant nearby. Been coming for years. Just keeps getting better. Pub can be a little noisy but that's expected. Great for a special occasion.

This was our second visit to Basil, and I have to say I was much more impressed the first time. On a weekday night, the place was almost empty except for a group having a function upstairs. The food was just okay. My haddock scallop dinner with cream sauce was very bland and my husband felt underwhelmed by his dinner also. I like Basil. The food is some days better than others but the staff is consistently accommodating and friendly. It's a nice place to get a martini in the lounge area (where they have a beautiful fish tank!) or have a family dinner in the dining room. Last night I got the pan seared scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly although for something on the "light entree" section there was a whole lot of excess oil/butter in the bottom of the dish. As well, they plate all the light entree options on the salad the dish comes with. The lettuce can get a little wilted from the heat of the food. They cover the salad in dressing which I did not like. Not a place to eat super healthy but when in Rome! read more

The food was not very good at all. Same menu they had before they shut down to renovate this past July. Time to update the menu and perhaps find a better cook. The chicken parm was tasteless and the pasta sauce was watery. We also had a grilled chicken salad which was a nice portion and looked good but tasted like the grill. Went to Basils last night for dinner. This restaurant is tucked away on a side street and is Medfields best kept secret. It's worth it to google it and find it. The bartenders are phenomenal and the waitstaff is extremely friendly . The drinks are generous and the food portions leave enough for a take home bag. Their specials do not disappoint. They are very accommodating to your needs and will make anything the way you like it. read more

Great food. Love eating in the bar. It is somewhat difficult to find and if you didn't know it was there you'd never find it. It is hidden in a residential area. My favorite server was Donna. Terrific food, but the menu could use a shake up. I really like that they have a pub menu as well as their normal dining room version too. I typically eat in the pub area, and really appreciated the homey feel and friendly staff that knew you and your order, but ever since they remodeled it's a little too upper crust for my liking. The real downside is the pricing - it's really expensive on par with something you might find in Boston. In the past the would always be busy but some other restaurants in town have taken the pub crowd away, so Basil's solution - raise prices and too bad for them. Again very good food but the atmosphere and pricing is making it impossible to visit there much in the future. read more

This is one of my favorite places. I've always had good to very good meals here and the dining booths are comfortable. Good value for the money. The menu has a good variety of Italian dishes with a number if seafood choices (I like the seafood diablo when they have it) including delicious seafood casserole and crab stuffed haddock. Be sure to have the server describe the specials....they are often excellent. The salad specials are great appetizers, as are the lobster ravioli, stuffed mushrooms, or (if they have them) the oysters Rockefeller. The mixed drinks are ok but a bit expensive for what you get. We prefer to sit near the fish tank or by the front window. The service is pretty good if you get an experienced server, otherwise it can be a little uneven. read more

We have been going to Basil for years. The food and service is the best in Medfield and in the local area. The bar was renovated a year ago. I went to this restaurant once for an appetizer at the bar, which was good enough to bring me back for dinner. However, I was VERY disappointed when as I began to eat my salad, I found a few (yes, a few) pieces of hard plastic in my mozzarella and tomato salad. I certainly didn't expect it to be crunchy!?!?! It actually almost broke my tooth. I immediately told the waitress who quickly disappeared with my salad to the kitchen. However, it took quite a while for her to return and when she did she said they assumed it was plastic from the green crates they use in the kitchen. WHAT? I was never approached by the owner although she was standing at the front desk the entire time (within close proximity and plain view of me and my husband). We reluctantly and carefully finished our meals (since we were so hungry) and the waitress took my salad off of the bill. We have eaten at Basil's three or four times in the past year (we do not live in town). The food and service has always been excellent, even when dining with a large group. I think Basil's is the perfect choice when you want a nice dinner, with a comfortable atmosphere (it's classy without being stuffy or formal). It also is reasonably priced. read more

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice meal at Basil on Tuesday night. Although everything was great as usual, our waitress was also the hostess. While taking our order she excused herself twice to answer the phone. This has happened on more than one occasion. I don't understand why they don't hire a full time hostess! read more
