Was visiting and went here based on a recommendation. Great service and super cute place. Loved the buffalo cauliflower - nicely fried and almost fluffy. I had the coconut chicken bowl - beware because it is SPICY. Great flavors, good portions, and spicy. Did not really like the tomato salad. Tomatoes were not firm and it was watery overall. Still, I'd recommend it overall! Btw: if you have mobility issues, you'll want to dine inside as there are stairs required to the patio. We didn't know that and there is no hand rail either.
Came here for dinner. Great vegetarian and vegan options. No meat/seafood is fried so no cross contamination of vegetarian fried items. Got the sweet potato fries with the vegan ranch dressing. That dressing deserves a 10. So good. I also got the vegan Caesar salad. It was good, nothing special. My friend got the basic bowl and said it was good. Our server was sweet and friendly. Inside was open and airy. Would come back to try other things if I was visiting longer.
We had a wonderful dinner at Basic Kitchen, located just a short walk from King Street. The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that feels very community-driven and intimate, making it a great spot for a relaxed dinner. When we visited on a weekday evening, we were seated quickly with no wait! We started with the corn ribs, which were honestly one of the BEST appetizers we've ever had! They had the texture and flavor of ribs but were made from corn and served with an incredible chipotle dipping sauce that brought everything together perfectly! For our main dish, we ordered the spinach and feta pita, which was warm, gooey, and packed with flavor. The pita was stuffed with spinach and feta, making it rich and comforting--almost like a warm hug. It also came with a fresh side salad that was tangy and refreshing, which balanced the richness of the pita really well! I do wish that the pita was a bit more flavorful on the inside, not just the outside. My husband also ordered an Old Fashioned and said it was excellent. Overall, the food felt incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared. If you're looking for a cozy spot in Charleston with fresh ingredients and great flavors, this place is definitely worth visiting!
I would 10/10 recommend Basic Kitchen to anyone visiting Charleston! Perfect for brunch or lunch after walking on King Street. It's a sit down brunch spot with a warm atmosphere. I'd make a reservation. Staff was very respectful of food allergies. Good vegan options. Very inclusive menu. I highly recommend the sweet potato fries. My boyfriend and I still talk about how good they are!
A wonderful Mother's Day lunch! All of our food was fantastic. The sweet potato fries MELT in your mouth. As someone who has to avoid gluten, shellfish, and dairy, this place is so wonderful for all food restrictions and they have many safe options for me to eat. I also highly recommend their mocktails! Our service was great, staff were friendly. Sitting near the front window was such a treat with the beautiful flowers behind us in the flower box.
My mom and I came in on a Friday afternoon and were able to be seated right away. The outside of the restaurant looks like something you would walk right by, but the inside was bustling. It is decorated beautifully and has high ceilings. Just from looking at people's food as we were being seated I could tell this was going to be a fantastic and fresh meal. Our server greeted us and first asked if we had any allergies she should know about. While neither of us do, I thought this was a kind gesture. I was also able to observe all the servers and the hostess working together to make the whole restaurant run smoothly, with everyone helping out where they could. I ordered the Shawarma Bowl and my mom ordered the Good Burger with a Golden Latte with espresso and coconut milk. When asked if my mom wanted avocado on her burger she said no, but it still came with avocado and we were charged for it. She was not too upset though because she agreed the avocado should have been on the burger. Overall the food was incredibly flavorful, fresh, and creative. If I ever have the chance to dine in Charleston again I would definitely come back here, as the whole menu looks enticing!
What a cute place, and I didn't even see the section that is outdoors! The food is simple, delicious, and cohesive. Our server was in the final weeks of her pregnancy and feeling it, but was so sweet and attentive. I do wish they had more options on the food menu. The beet margarita was interesting and the Negroni was incredibly strong. It was reasonably priced. I'd eat here again.
This was such a fun brunch for our party of four! We were seated on the patio and had perfect weather in Charleston in November. Our server was very sweet and friendly and took great care of us. We had a few different folks come check on us/bring food over/clear the table, and I always appreciate those table touches. The beet margartia was really tasty and not too sweet, and it's just such a beautiful color - you can't beet it ;) Breakfast was delicious and we were all very happy with what we ordered. Both the veggie (good) and regular (naughty) burgers were tasty and the sweet potato fries were just AMAZING. I had the "conscious cowboy" plate and it was super unique and tasty. The corn ribs were such a good treat - you have to try them. Easy to eat, perfectly cooked and season, great to share with the table. We hung out and took our time enjoying the meal, and everything was awesome.
This place was giving almond mom, in the sense that it was healthy and had well-balanced meals. Plus, there were options that could accommodate everyone's dietary needs. The Cauli Wings didn't quite meet my expectations, felt like we've had better. Unfortunately, the chicken in the shawarma bowl was way too dry to eat. However, the rest of the bowl with its sauce pairings was pretty good.
The vibe and atmosphere were trendy and dark. It was romantic, in that respect. I'd heard great things about the mocktails, so I was disappointed to be served one that came prepackaged in a bottle. Don't get me wrong- the phony Negroni was delicious but not exactly the gastronomical delight I'd been expecting. We shared the cauliflower wings, which were great. Then I had the veggie burger and sweet potato fries, which were also tasty. My husband enjoyed the burger, but didn't think it was as good as it should have been for that price. The server was very kind, but I think he was a bit overextended because service was very slow. We'd finished our drinks and wings when he finally turned up to ask if we wanted entrees. Considering how exhausted we were from a day of sightseeing, we wished we'd been in and out a little quicker. Although I can't fault him for considering the possibility that we wanted to linger. All that to say, it was fine.
Different & VERY GOOD! Good crowd but not at all noisy. Most excellent service by Bryan! Nice beverages, Banana Bread, Corn Ribs to start. Smoked Salmon toast YUMZ. Amazing tastes of Veggie Bowl and Chicken Sausage. And now for the Chocolate Tahini Tart!! If you've never been, STOP, DROP and ROLL IN!!
Sweet potato fries were offered on the house when the kitchen notepad an extra ordered. Very nice start, and they were good - thick, soft and lightly seasoned. Fattoush salad with grilled salmon - a reasonable size portion. Did not finish, due to filling up on the fries.
We had been looking forward to trying Basic Kitchen because we'd heard such great things about the food, and overall it lived up to the hype--but the service unfortunately fell short. We had a reservation, were seated promptly, and received water right away. After that, though, we waited about 15 minutes without anyone checking on us and eventually had to wave someone down just to place our food and drink order. When our server came over, I asked whether the strawberry matcha had any added sugar in the strawberry purée. Instead of answering the question, she responded with, "Well yeah, it's strawberries," in a noticeably dismissive tone. I clarified that I was asking whether there was added sugar, and while she eventually answered, the interaction felt unnecessarily curt. Unfortunately, that attitude continued throughout the meal. The disappointing part is that the food and drinks were excellent. The salmon bowl was our favorite dish--absolutely fantastic. We also loved the kombucha, the fresh juice and coconut water drinks, and the matcha. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing, which made the service experience even more unfortunate. I'd absolutely come back for the food, but I hope the service is warmer next time because it didn't match the quality of everything coming out of the kitchen.

BEST BANANA BREAD IVE EVER HAD. AND it was GLUTEN FREE. It came with this cream cheese butter mixture and I literally still dream about this banana bread. Surprisingly this place does not have any flavored syrups for their coffee, but I still got a latte with vanilla extra and it was good. I did miss a little of the sweetness though. I got the sweet potato bowl and added sausage. The eggs were the perfect texture and flavor but just a little too salty for me. The sweet potato was delicious and each item in the bowl could be eaten separately or together. The meal was surprisingly filling! There are a couple paid street parking spots outside this restaurant but I believe there is more parking in the back. read more

Basic Kitchen is a great spot if you're looking for a vegetarian and vegan friendly spot that doesn't skimp out on flavor or options! I had a reservation for six people at 7pm on a Friday. For evening, they had the interior lights dimmed and there was a soft yellow glow throughout the darkened restaurant. The ambiance was very cozy and intimate. I am glad that I got a reservation because there was not too many spaces for a large group, and it was busy with the Friday night dinner crowd. I had the rice bowl with chicken that came with seaweed salad, roasted carrots, avocado, and cucumber. Eating it I truly felt like I was doing my body right with all the healthy and fresh ingredients! If I had to describe it, I would say it was similar to eating a poke bowl but without the fish. It was also a decent sized portion and I was comfortably full afterwards. I also had the crispy potatoes and cauliflower wings as appetizers. The cauliflower wings were just spicy enough and the potatoes were really satisfying, although it was a smaller portion. I'm definitely glad my group came to Basic Kitchen - Charleston has a ton of great restaurants but not all of them leave you feeling like your body is refreshed with light, healthy, and also filling ingredients. Walked in and it was such a nice surprise. Great food, nice service, and good ambiance. Food came really quick. Thai Butternut & Red Lentil Soup, Vegan Caesar, and Yellow Coconut Curry were all excellent with a nice twist. A bit noisy for conversation. read more
Basic Kitchen is minimal, healthy, energetic and truly a space for people to indulge in healthy food. Our server was a southern girl who had a charm. We loved sitting outside in the back garden. All of our food was very delicious, light, refreshing and healthy. read more

The food was good, but the service was just okay. I was on a solo trip and went to this place for dinner. I wanted to sit at a table, but I was told there would be a 45-minute wait, or I could sit at the bar. However, there were plenty of open tables, even a table for two. I felt that because I was dining solo, they didn't want to seat me at a table. The place was cute, but I didn't like how I was treated as a solo diner. Even at the bar, the bartender was not attentive. After I placed my order and my food came out, he never came over to check on me. I wanted to like this place, but I'll pass. read more

When you're a vegetarian living in the South, places like Basic Kitchen are hard to come by -- and this place just does everything right for me. Which is why, every single time I'm in Charleston, I *have* to eat here. It's not a vegetarian restaurant at all, but the veg options are amazing, exciting and plentiful. The restaurant is cute, too -- a great spot for date night or dining with friends. They have a nice patio as well. If I lived in Charleston, I'd eat at Basic Kitchen at least once a week. And I'd hope to get this one server I had last time I was there in October. He was SO funny. read more

What a great restaurant! Went here to celebrate my wife's birthday and we loved it. Started off with the Cauli Wings (vegan). Fantastic! We were really impressed with the taste and the cashew ranch is soooo goodt!! Wife had the Health Insurance; super gingery and just how she likes it I had the Beet Margarita; surprisingly tasty! Entrees of squash rigatoni and basic bowl. Both entrees were very well prepared and left us very satisfied. We really liked this place because it does a great job of having vegan/non-vegan choices so whatever your style you have plenty of choices which is so hard to do. definitely recommend for a date night! read more

This place is great for groups of vegetarians and non-vegetarians! Half their menu is tasty looking creative vegetarian dishes and the other half has meat. You can also add meat to any dish. Yummy food, good service, really cute atmosphere! I wish the portions were a little bigger BUT I loved the taste of my food and the options on the menu. The food options are great. Tons of amazing looking appetizers. The beet dip comes w veggies and chips and it was a great way to start. The Buffalo cauliflower wings were also very very good. I ordered the squash rigatoni as my entree and it was very tasty. I do wish it had more mushrooms because they were GOOD and I wish I had more pasta too. For $21, I feel like I should be very full of pasta. The service was good. Our waitress was very friendly and we got our food in a timely manner. She got all our orders right and made some yummy recommendations. The inside of the restaurant is super cute and it's a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. It's all indoor dining and they can accommodate large parties. The booth/table for 8 was great and perfectly sized. The vibe is all veggie-fresh-ish? I don't know how to describe it but I really like it. Overall, very good experience all around. Definitely the place to bring a vegetarian in Charleston! My only complaint is in the portion size department but the portions aren't small by any means. I just wish there was more. read more

I truly enjoyed the Soba, it's got a great punch but not over powering. The tuna bowl was good as well though expected at this price level. We had falafels sides as well, which was fine, but not good enough for $5 for 3 imo. Overall though, decent service, decent food, five yelp stars. read more

Tried this as a healthy lunch option to break up fried dinners while my family of 5 was in Charleston. Everything from the atmosphere to decor to the food was FABULOUS. Beyond impressed & only wished that I lived closer or that Basic Kitchen considers opening up a second location in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL....! Our family split items family style - beet dip, sweet potato fries with cashew ranch, basic bowl, and mushroom lentil pasta (& a burger for my oldest boys). Each item was better than the next - the fries were the best sweet potato fries I've ever had, the "ranch" was excellent and the beet dip was flavorful & unexpectedly amazing. Service was excellent as well - will definitely be back next CHS! read more
We came here for lunch on a rainy dinner and had a nice meal. The outdoor area is pleasant, but not well-suited for bad weathers. Indoors, the restaurant is fairly trendy and seemed to have a nice bar area. We ordered the summer pasta, basic bowl, salmon bowl, and the salad of the week (which was a farro/fig/burrata dish). The pasta was delicious! Both the basic bowl and salmon bowl were healthier options that were tasty- however, you could probably recreate these at home. The salad of the week was not as great as we had expected. I'd recommend this spot if you're looking for a simple and healthy meal in a trendy environment. read more

The sweet potato fries are to die for. My friend and I ordered the small plate because of other reviews I saw about them. They were cooked to perfection and the cashew ranch was so yummy. We ate the entire thing before our lunches arrived. I had the salmon bowl which was delicious. This was the first time having Charleston gold rice and now I know why it's expensive. It is truly special. Loved the seaweed, marinated cabbage and ginger salad and even the cucumbers. I thoroughly enjoyed everything. read more

First time in Charleston; this was the perfect welcome! My dad and I came here for dinner after checking into our lodging at 17:30. My dad wanted to look for places to eat-- he's gluten-allergic, so he can't eat just anywhere. He told me this place looked good. I called ahead just to double-check their menu was gluten-sensitive. The hostess who answered was incredibly friendly and helpful-- even going as far to make us a reservation, even though we're just a five minute drive away. Parking is a little bit dicey, but it's a city, so what do you expect? When we got there, the hostess informed us they had a vegan menu for January. We didn't want to disappoint, and it's a local tavern-esque place like we usually like back home, so we figured we'd stay. As we were seated, our waitress came over promptly and immediately gave us waters as she took our drink orders. I ordered the cucumber limeade they had on special, while my dad ordered a vodka tonic with Tito's. Then came to order. The selections are a bit pricey, but, again, it's a city. Vegan is usually more expensive too. 97% of the menu is gluten-free or can be made as such. My dad ordered the Impossible Naughty Burger and I ordered the Dukkah Cauliflower Schnitzel. He really enjoyed his burger. I really enjoyed my schnitzel-- it didn't even taste too different from regular schnitzel! The cauliflower is held together with the breading used to coat the schnitzel. Then we had to share dessert. I'm not too sure what it was because I was still eating when my dad ordered it, but it was a piece of tart-like cake that tasted chocolatey. The only downsides of this epic eatery are the prices and the parking, but it's a city, so it's not necessarily the restaurant's fault. As a result, this restaurant deserves five stars!!!! 10/10 would recommend, and we'd go back if we were from this area. read more

Basic Kitchen is... well... basic. It has that artsy, minimalist vibe that reminds me of LA or ATX. I can see how some people like that, BUT what I adorable about Charleston is it's cozy, characteristic, and warm atmosphere. Basic Kitchen is like a plain daisy in a garden full of immaculate roses - okay on its own, but pales in comparison to other options. The food itself was tasty, but the menu is limited (or should I say basic?) and I wasn't overly impressed by the Basic Bowl I ordered. I felt I could have prepared it easily at home. At the end of the day, I'd say eat here if you live in the area and want a healthy choice, but if you are visiting Charleston, skip this. There are many incredible unique places this city offers. read more

Basic Kitchen has an excellent atmosphere and phenomenal workers!! Everyone there is nice and I love them. I have been 2 times recently and this is an excellent restaurant for anyone who is VEGAN! When I went last night everything in the menu you was vegan which is definitely something that's changed over the years. nothing wrong with that I just don't find that I'm full when leaving here. I got the Carolina Gold Rice Bowl for $22 it was good but definitely not enough to fill me up and way to much cabbage and seaweed which I normally love. I thought it was pretty expensive got no drinks and left paying $30. I would have like to try something better especially since last time I got the kale pesto pasta which I also wasn't too excited about and felt was pretty bland but also pricey. I would only recommend going here if you are Vegan or like that style food, then it would be a great place. read more

Love how fresh and healthy the dishes were--the textures especially in the vegan Caesar salad with the crispy chickpeas elevated this from an average salad. Open kitchen concept was great to see. The outside seating area had a great vibe and the decor was unique. It does get a little busy so a reservation might be something to consider especially during peak lunch hours. read more

A really nice, vibey spot in Charleston leaves a little more desired with the food, but solid drinks and a comfortable, clean atmosphere, with great service! After making a day trip from Myrtle Beach and exploring Fort Sumter, my girlfriend and I decided to take a peek at some local cuisine. We made a reservation, and walked into a really cool restaurant, that seemed very hipster and appropriate for Charleston. Loved the atmosphere. Comfortable seating, cool wall art, and just an overall fun setting. Our waitress was great! Super informative, personable, and just genuine. She came very quickly to greet us, gave us some recommendations, and took our drink orders. The drinks were good! While I can't remember what my girlfriend ordered (daily special), I opted for the Black Walnut Manhattan. The combination of flavors made for a really nice drink. Boozy, as a Manhattan should be, but not too heavy! The food, however, was nothing to write home about. The cauli wings were underwhelming. They lacked buffalo sauce, and we had to order extra (which is extra $). They also came out a bit soggy. I'd recommend putting a bit extra sauce on them. For the main, the Pistachio Pesto Rigatoni was shared. It was just okay. I actually enjoyed it better the next day, cold. Maybe it's just not my thing, but it seemed to just lack toppings, aside from the overwhelming amount of mint, which, if it wasn't on the top, probably wasn't incorporated in the flavor. Overall, I would come back here for a drink, and MAYBE try another appetizer (our Uber Driver recommended the Corn Ribs). Excellent service, good drinks, and comfy atmosphere are all reasons to come back. read more

Stumbled upon this cute lil spot while looking for lunch, and I'm glad I did. I didn't realize it was vegan-friendly but I didn't mind...cocktails are vegan-friendly too! The space was bright and airy, which fit the vibe of the restaurant. I had to try the Passion Fruit Manhattan, and it was so delicious and potent! I also decided to try the Vegan Caesar, but I added salmon. Wow, what a dish! There was "parm" cheese made with cashews, crunchy lil chickpeas, and the salmon was cooked to perfection. My mom had the Basic Bowl, which she said was good. Although we were hungry again soon after, we said we'd definitely return for more feel good taste good dishes! read more
