We were looking for a brunch spot on Saturday morning that had good reviews and a short wait. Basic Kitchen checked both boxes. Seating was available both inside and outside, and we chose to sit on the back patio. It was warm, but there were fans around the patio. The atmosphere and culture were relaxed and casual. The servers were nice and attentive. The menu had fresh and healthy options. We ordered the Conscious Cowboy (curried chicken sausage link, cauliflower grits, potato-veggie hash, and 2 eggs) and Avo Toast (avocado, egg, black sesame gomasio, sourdough). The avocado toast was really good. The curried chicken sausage had good flavor but was a little dry. The potato-veggie hash lack seasoning. But the disappointment of the meal was the cauliflower grits. They had a similar consistency to grits, but they tasted like ground up cauliflower with no seasoning. We also ordered a couple of specialty coffees - matcha muchacha (green tea powder, milk) and golden latte (turmeric, cinnamon, agave, milk). Both were good but were very strong in their flavor. Overall, the brunch was good, but not great. It was also more expensive than I would have liked. If you are looking for a healthy restaurant with locally sourced foods and a little more modern/healthy food that is a little more pricey, then this is probably a good choice for you. For brunch, I will likely choose another restaurant next time, but I would come back for lunch or dinner. It's a good restaurant, but I give Basic Kitchen a 6/10 for brunch. read more

So it started with a Resy reservation that only puts you on the patio when it was unseasonably cold without an inside option was a strike. The outdoor heaters negated that. There were a few slots still open, which was an exciting find, as many other restaurants did not have availability Basic Kitchen is set a block off the main drag, King St, and has a cozy, hip atmosphere at night. Everyone who works there is very friendly We started with the corn ribs and the cauliflower wings. We were concerned how spicy both were going to be, but they offered to make the rub on the corn ribs less spicy, and even put the Buffalo sauce on the side. We ended up not changing anything, but there's definitely a kick to the Buffalo cauliflower I had the cauliflower schnitzel as my main, and my partner had the good burger. The schnitzel was very nicely crusted, great flavors, especially with the pomegranate seeds and other toppings. The good burger had nice flavor, but was a little dry. With more toppings and sauce it'd be good, but my partner was disappointed Our other party members had the (meat) burger and the swordfish. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We were visiting Charleston, and our family has a number of food allergies - milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, plus I'm gluten-free. The staff is very welcoming and friendly and the ambience is nice. Loved the energy and the vibes from the staff and the restaurant decor. There were lots of options for us to eat and I felt very safe (for myself and my kids). Thai butternut & red lentil soup was yummy. My hubs got the yellow coconut curry with tofu and it was really good. The sweet potato fries with the vegan ranch were amazing (really the ranch...you have to try it). I ordered the Naughty Burger without cheese and on gluten-free bread and was underwhelmed. The beef was great, but they left off the onions and gave me a dollop of dijonnaise on sandwich bread (sliced bread). That's it. Sandwich bread, a dollop of dijonnaise, pickles, and 2 burger patties. It was dry and basic. I would have loved a gluten-free bun, the option of vegan cheese, and more condiments. My son enjoyed his Naughty Burger without modifications. It did come with a bun. Overall, I was pleased that no one had an allergic reaction, everyone had safe options, and the food was good. I just wasn't blown away and was disappointed with my Naughty Burger. Ordered Basic Kitchen using Doordash for carry out. First and foremost, learn from my mistake and DO NOT do this. They charged $4-5 extra per dish for this convenience--simply ordering online. Delivery not included. The total for caesar salad, cauliflower wings, and a curry bowl was $72!! When I got to the restaurant to pick up my order I could see it was ready (behind the host station), but waited 10 minutes for a human to appear to hand me my food. The caesar salad was delicious ($22). The cauliflower wings were undercooked ($17). The breading was crispy, but the cauliflower inside was basically raw. Finally the tofu included in the curry was so salty it was inedible ($32). Perhaps worst of all was the fact that the portion sizes were absurdly small for the prices they charge. This place is a lovely little spot in Charleston, SC. The food is locally sourced and great for all kinds of diets. There are several vegan options and meat options as well. The food was very tasty and everyone enjoyed their meals. We had the corn ribs, basic bowl, vegan Caesar, curry, cucumber soup, noodle bowl, and cauliflower steak. The only complaint was that some of the components in some of the meals were a little hard (cauliflower steak, sweet potatoes), BUT it was immediately taken back and remade. Surprisingly this place does not have any flavored syrups for their coffee, but I still got a latte with vanilla extra and it was good. I did miss a little of the sweetness though. I got the sweet potato bowl and added sausage. The eggs were the perfect texture and flavor but just a little too salty for me. The sweet potato was delicious and each item in the bowl could be eaten separately or together. The meal was surprisingly filling!
