Tasty small plates and tacos are features at this Mexican outlet. On our most recent visit the food and drinks were up to their usual tasty standards. We started with the extra crispy chips (a great deal at only $3) and the crab empanadas which come 2 to an order. Later I had two of the "gringo" tacos-crispy shell with seasoned beef, onions, cheese and hot sauce (yum!) while my wife had the salmon special. First of all..I love the service here and that is without question some of the best. I'm primarily scoring the food. It's bland, near flavorless etc. for example... the guacamole has not garlic, or salt and pepper or jalapeños. Super basic. Stopped in with family yesterday for lunch while touring the Edina art fair. While the food was good, our server was absolutely horrible. He came back multiple times because he couldn't remember our order. If you're that bad, write it down. Waters were never refilled and we had to ask multiple times for extra chips, which took nearly 15 minutes to get. If you're looking for a better experience, go next door to Salut. My parents and I went here last Friday night for a change of pace and we couldn't have been happier. At first, I was a little worried that the place would be too loud (my father's hearing is terrible), as the bar in the front was really loud, but then we were escorted to the back room, which was ideal - much quieter, but still with a buzz feeling that let you know that you weren't in the basement. The service was great, friendly and helpful and my mother even found what she wanted that wasn't too spicy (she thinks that ketchup is spicy), thanks to the server who helped her a little. The chips that we ordered were fresh, salty and crispy and absolutely delicious, as was everything else that we had. I had the pozole, which was one of the best renditions that I have ever had, while my mother had a chicken enchilada and black beans. My father had tostadas and honestly, everything was so good that we almost licked our plates. I would absolutely recommend this place for nearly anyone, although it might not be the best place for kids on a Friday night . . .just sayin'. read more

Barrio's food is served tapas style with lots of small plates that come out sporadically as they are prepared so you can dabble in a variety of distinct flavors. Everything I've had has been good, maybe a little pricey given the size of their small dishes, but really not bad compared to most places in Edina. Last night our server was very helpful in helping my boyfriend pick out a tequila to try with his dinner. He was super knowledgeable about all the options and even offered cinnamon on orange as a side to contrast the flavor and get the most out of his selection. Pretty cool, you definitely can't get that kind of expertise just anywhere. We started off with queso fundido with chorizo. I usually find chorizo to be oily and the flavor overpowering, but in this app it was smokey and wasn't running at all, it was very good. My boyfriend then had the chicken tortilla soup which was pretty darn big, I bet that would be the only small plate needed to fill me up. I had the salmon tostada which was good. It came with soft avocado and a super spicy arbor salsa. I loved that salsa. My boyfriend had room for one more and went with the habanero chicken small plate, which I got to try and didn't have quite as much heat as my salsa. I like it here. Still, the number of babies on a Friday night at 7 pm was jarring. Also, lots of expensive clothing. Very Edina. If you look at the menu online and think it sounds good, then you'll like it. I like the food. I like the drinks. If the menu seems like not your style, well it probably isn't. This is not the case at every restaurant. When I've been here with a reservation, the service is awesome! Awesome like oops we brought you an extra free tamale! Your drink arrives in minutes! You can sit at a big awesome table in the back! Have been craving some good Tacos for over a month now. So when I happened to be in Edina we thought we should stop by Barrio. First things first, all the guests seemed VERY WELL dressed. Maybe because it's Edina on a Friday evening, but we were just coming back from a 3 hour hike , so we might have looked a little out of place. I had the Grilled chicken Tacos, and their Chips and Salsa plate. My wife ordered the Margarita. All very good. Most adults will need at least 3 tacos . The chicken could have been a little more spicy bit nothing to complain about. The service was very prompt and friendly. Definitely recommend, but make sure you are well dressed :). Ive seen mixed reviews for Cocina del Barrio, but I can't say I have many complaints. Overall, I think it's just a great place to have lunch, particularly if you can take advantage of the $10 special. The interior is the first thing that makes the trip to Cocina del Barrio worth visiting. Im not sure if their other locations (Minneapolis & St. Paul) have similar designs, but I was very impressed by the atmosphere created by the lighting and warm colors. They are known for their tequila selections as well, so it's a nice touch to see the open bar from most of the dining area. The food isn't the best Mexican food Ive had in the cities, but it is still quite good. Everything that Ive had there is very fresh and some of the flavor combinations are quite unique. I had never had cumin fried chicken tacos before and I was not disappointed. The house guacamole is outstanding, too. I once had an issue with an overcooked piece of grilled chicken and the chips can often be a bit overly salted... But those are my only minor complaints thus far. I havent sampled the dinner menu yet, but I can vouch for the quality of the lunch menu. I highly recommend the $10 lunch special. Typically, it will include two specialty tacos (changes frequently) and a tray of salsas/guac with chips. The location is very hit or miss for some reason. I've been here for brunch, lunch, and dinner, and it's all been a very different experience. Brunch was terrible - food was off, server was tired, place was just kinda subdued all around. Terrible Chirro, shudder! Lunch was good - all around just good. Nothing stood out, so not much to say. Dinner was great! Food was perfect, savory, spicy, and delicious. Drinks were amazing and could have drunk so much more. Service was lively, talkative, and knowledgeable. I've had late night food at the downtown location and have been to the St. Paul location for drinks. The Edina location is all together different, and I'm going to say it has to do with the neighborhood, kids, etc...general demographics of downtown Edina more than time of day. read more

Easily the best carnitas taco I've ever had. It was so soft and not at all slimy/fatty like some carnitas can be. The meat is roasted in orange and cinnamon which gives it a really unique flavor and tenderness. Solid service and comfortable atmosphere. We came for happy hour so we paid $3.5 per taco (about 6 inches in diameter) and $8 for a huge bowl of guacamole. The decor is very cool, reminds me of the Hell's Kitchen downtown. Lots of red and black. Wait staff were average, cordial. We ordered a few things to split and share: - Guacamole: good but not great. No spice but it was fresh. Chips are Homemade! and tasty. The salsa is bland, very little spice. - 1 Pork Carnitas Taco: Pork was beyond great, but then they screwed it up with this weird green sauce (maybe tomatillo) The sauce killed all the flavor the pork had. The only way i know the pork was so great is that i dug some out from under the sauce to try it alone. - 1 Fish Taco: Lack luster, fresh, good but nothing great - Shredded beef torta: Excellent grill flavor, had some cheese and black bean spread on it that wasnt necessary, the meat had a nice flavor and the bread was grilled and crunchy. Our lunch with drinks was $40ish I'm excited to go back, the food was clean and authentic. Not loaded with sauce and cheese. The bar was nice and they had a great selection of beers and high end liquor. A few girlfriends and I went for happy hour a week ago, and got armfuls of food (two tacos each, queso, guacamole, chicken tamal and drinks) and it came out to roughly $25 per person. Everything we had was delicious, and I highly recommend the tamal, carnitas taco and fish taco. Our waiter was a little slow in checking in, but it was a busy night and we were happy to just sit and chat. He was really nice too, so can't complain. This was my first time at Cocina Del Barrio, and it was delicious. Myself and some friends ordered from the happy hour menu, and split some guacamole to start. The table side guac was very good, but also very small. The chips were great. I ordered a Mama Cita cocktail, which was very sweet, and a Pacifica, which was excellent. The tacos (chicken and fish) were really flavorful and fun. I would recommend getting 2-3, and they come out one at a time whenever they are ready. The atmosphere is casual and fun, and the service is friendly, although one of our tacos never came out and our bill had to be redone twice. That being said, the food was really good and I'm excited to try more on their menu. There's some street parking outside of the restaurant, otherwise you can park in the bank lot next door after business hours. read more

We had the guac and chips which they make fresh and serve in a stone bowl. Delicious - with a few jalapeños on the side for kick. We also got the grilled shrimp which was an amazing flavor that I have not had before. Excellent! we also had the fish tacos - fried fish which I don't usually do but it was a nice sized piece of fish so you still also tasted the fish inside. The aoili was very tasty too. We shared everything which this restaurant is really good for. Lots of small plates so you can try different things. The server was really great too, thoughtful and helpful, attentive and had a great smile. I will definitely go again. Went in for a quick drink, had a oatmeal stout from Sam Adams. The ambience was nice, with Mexican songs and traditional Mexican pictures posted around, had a good feel to the restaurant. The service was good, as we were seated right away and helped right after. It's a good place along side some of the very good restaurants in Edina Downtown. Love the downtown area during this time of the year as the festivities start and the streets are decorated with lights. This Barrio is supposed to have the more extended food options, but I think the downtown location has better food options. It's a very seafood heavy menu, and they have the usual tapas offering. The drinks were the usual barrio price (a bit more than I'd like to pay). The Chips and Guacamole were delicious as always, can't beat their chips and guac at any locations.
