Ok,I have to say,it was bad.We ordered the beef fajitas and the beef nachos.lets start with the nachos,it came out close to being cold.Their wasn't very many tomatoes and it would have been nice if the ingredients were spread out a little better .The Beef(hamburger)was like sawdust,with little flavor.4 out of 10. Went here for lunch with the family and we had a great time! I typically go to the Lake Street location, but decided to give this location a try and it was just as good (maybe better? Although it's harder to compare because I always take my food to go from the Lake Street location). The pina colada was delicious, as was the margs where you can pick from 3 or 4 sizes. The tripa tacos were absolutely delicious- clean, crispy and flavorful, and of course with the light green salsa? Chef's kiss. Service was also friendly and there's lots of parking in the back. I haven't tried anything here that's been bad! The service is always nice, and it feels good supporting a local restaurant. Their tacos are sooo good, especially with the light green salsa they serve it with! My favorite is the veggie taco, which has a surprisingly amount of flavor. Try the churro bites! It's a good size for sharing! Comes with chocolate and caramel drizzled on, and whipped cream that tastes fresh. For drinks, if you're looking for a margarita, I'd recommend the blood orange one! We visited this restaurant for the last time this afternoon. I was yelled at by the manager and basically accused of ordering a green salsa dish when I ordered a red salsa dish. I kindly told our waitress that I ordered red and she apologized and took it back to the kitchen. a few minutes later she came back and said that they don't have red aguachile. I again kindly told her that I didn't order the green please take it off my bill (the juice on this did not even look green, it literally looked like dirty dish water). As she walked back to the kitchen I heard her manager with an angry tone speaking in Spanish and stating that I was paying for the dish. I don't think she thought we spoke Spanish and when she came over to the table I told her the same thing that I was not paying for something I didn't order. She began to raise her voice and argue, "Did you order the green aguachile?" I responded in the same sarcastic tone at this point and told her no I ordered red. She repeated the same thing over and over again about 5 times. The tone continued to get louder and more sarcastic until she realized I was not backing down. She continued to talk and bitch about it to the bar and my husband attempted to go and talk with a manager and she said she was the manager. She started to argue and treat him the same way. Overall, this interaction was appalling and disrespectful. This is a different world and can't believe I'm seeing this behavior by management. The food is not good anymore and the prices are astronomical. I even contacted their corporate offices and never received a response at all. Very disappointing. read more

I've enjoyed food at this Los Ocampos since the day they opened their doors. I often would come in and sit at the bar and watch the games. The staff is friendly. Nothing over the top, but definitely appropriate. I love the food here. The rice and beans are delicious, and they have the best cranberry juice I've ever tasted in my life! I contacted a few different Mexican restaurants to cater a company picnic. Most were unresponsive but Emma from Los Ocampo quickly responded to my online inquiry. She was really helpful in selecting how much food/drinks for the picnic and very quick to respond. For a quote of 200 people Taco Bar, the total with delivery and a 15% was about $2,784 or $14/person. For the amount and quality of food we received it was definitely worth it! For delivery, they were also very communicative and even early to the set delivery time. They were friendly and worked quickly also to get everything set up. The only cons: - We ordered Jaritos but didn't realize these weren't twist off and came without any coolers. It would've been nice for them to give notice but also on my part I should've clarified! - The food was set up a out of order. The tortillas were wedged between the meats and we thought salsa was forgotten but turns out they were all in a box underneath the chip tray. It would be better if they would've set it up in an order of assembly. Besides the 2 cons, it was such a smooth experience and I'll definitely consider them to cater next events! read more

Finally! Another Mexican restaurant on University. The closest one to us was on Suburban Ave and that was a bit of a hike. So glad to see these guys move in. A nice and refreshing alternative to La Cucaracha. Great customer service. They get you in, out and get you what you want. Great green salsa. Nice view of University Avenue. This review is written in great disappointment. When the store first opened I found the food good, not great but good. They did have one recipe that was amazing. It was huitlacoche. I had to force myself to try this thing, it was hard to bring it up to my mouth, but when I did I was like oh this is why it's so amazingly expensive in Mexico All of that said the experience I had 2 days ago was nothing like that. When we walked in there was a family having dinner the children we're literally running wild around the restaurant. When receded t ithe children were slapping at our table and continuing to run around the restaurant. I understand but it's hard to know what to do in a situation like that as a manager or restaurant owner. We decided to put in an order I like very spicy food so I ordered the spiciest things that they had, my sister thinks ketchup is spicy she could have eaten the food I was given. The very spicy ground beef literally tasted like it had only had salt at it it was flavorless this is not Mexican cooking. Literally the server came to the table at night after delivering are chips and salsa and I said can we have some hot sauce and she said that is the hot sauce. Food: Full disclaimer -- I ordered from Door Dash and didn't eat in the restaurant. That being said, I ordered the Cubano Torta sandwich and the Chips and Queso Blanco. The sandwich was really tasty and well balanced, although it didn't need the sliced hot dog meat in the middle. I love a good torta, and this one was filled without the fillings being so overpowering that you can't eat it without a fork. The Queso Blanco was NOT good, though. Generous portion sizes, friendly wait staff, nice interior, and well-priced! Stopped in here for the first time for a late lunch. My bf and I ordered horchata, chori-queso con papas, tostada con carne with barbacoa, and the los ocampo burrito with grilled steak. Horchata - loved this!! So refreshing and went great with our meal. Chori-queso con papas - these were amazing!!! Super crispy potato fries that was served with a queso/meat dip. It comes with a lot of fries so my bf and I were almost full by the time our entrees arrived. We were satisfied with the ratio of dip to fries. Tostada con carne with barbacoa - plain but filling. You can add retried beans and rice to the plate for an extra $3.50 which was worth it. Los ocampo burrito w/ grilled steak - I was a bit disappointed in this one. It lacked flavor, especially in the meat department. It was filled more with rice and refried beans than anything else. I was hoping for a more even distribution of ingredients. The burrito comes with a few chips and guacamole. I should have started out eating this first, because the guac was so so good!!! All in all though, we had a wonderful experience here. I was pleasantly surprised. They serve food that's more Mexican than Tex-Mex, and it's good quality food. I've had their Huarachazos, which you can order with rice & beans, but they're filling enough on their own. Also the Mexican Eggs, which were astounding. I'd rate them one tick below Homi, up University, which is the best place I've found for Pueblo-style cooking (though there are about a hundred restaurants on the West Side I have yet to try). Good food, nice surroundings, with waiters you occasionally have to chase down (service is not great, but the food makes up for it). I recommend it, but don't go if you're starving! read more

I've been to all the other locations, and this place needs some serious work to get on the level of my personal favorite location at Chicago & Lake. I liked the interior-- the rounded wall of windows is a cool effect. But our service was abysmal and the food was just OK. I went with a group of coworkers for lunch on a Wednesday. This location is restaurant style (vs. taqueria) with table service and a menu like the White Bear location (which includes full bar!). They do have a sweet lunch special for $10-- you can get virtually any dish with a side of rice & beans, soup or salad, and a fountain beverage. I went with my longtime love, a Quesadilla al Pastor (note: quesadillas are not what you would expect-- its basically a big taco but with more fixings and a thicker grilled corn tortilla) and felt it was average. Rice & beans were good, but the salad was a sad combination of iceberg, shredded cheese, croutons, and a couple tomato slices with your option of French or Ranch (?). A few coworkers got tamales which were hard and cold-- the opposite of any self-respecting tamale I know. The service was just bizarre... a few people got there early and ordered waters that never arrived. A different server took our order and handled everything else, but he was definitely out of his element. Everything took a really long time, especially splitting and paying for the bill We did say we wanted separate checks at the beginning, but I'll admit that is mad obnoxious with 7 people. One of my coworkers got charged twice and had to talk through the order with them for like 15 minutes. The whole thing took about 2 hours-- way more than most people can afford to do on a weekday lunch. I'm going back to Chi-Lake next time. read more

I've been to two other Los Ocampo restaurants and I'll be honest that this didn't have the best food. However, the service and environment of this location surpasses the others'. This location is a full service sit down restaurant and the design is modern, clean, and very bright. The bar oversees a semi open kitchen. As for the food, I recommend the chicken wings. The buffalo sauce was amazing. The tamales with salsa verde was also tasty. My favorite Los Ocampo dish though is the tlacoyo with pork. You must try it with the spicy green sauce. The jamaica juice was sweet but not tart it usually is. Overall, it's comparable with other full service Mexican restaurants in St Paul. read more

I just love Los Ocampo. Why does it have three stars on Yelp? Maybe all the reviewers contracted a mysterious psychological ailment that causes the brain to mysteriously subtract two from every number it sees. Los Ocampo's main restaurant is off 94 at White Bear. It's a homey Mexican joint (which means slightly less colorful decor and noise) that does the usual and unusual suspects very well. This location on University is newer and quieter. The perfect choice for casual but flavorful Mexican. Food? Rice, yummy. Beans, hearty. Horchata, check. The heart of the menu are all of the various meats, which can be served in a dizzying variety of tacos, quesadillas, and all species of masa cakes. Case in point, the huarachazo, a masa cake with your meat of choice, beans, queso, crema, pico de gallo. There are more like these. Pick your pleasure. In terms of meats, you won't go wrong with mainstays like al pastor or chicken tinga, but everything is good. I'm vegetarian now and my go-to is the huitlacoche, which is super hard to find and one of those "special acquired tastes". What is it? Welllll I'm not sure if you'd like it. It's fermented and black and life-sustaining. Even if you decide to be a Mexican't with regards to this one, there are plenty of other lovely choices. read more

Having had a great experience at the Suburban Avenue location, I was pretty disappointed with the new University Avenue location. The service was friendly and the atmosphere welcoming, but I wish the food quality matched what I had earlier. I thought the vegetarian pumpkin flower dish I had at the Suburban location was bursting with flavor, and I couldn't wait to try it again. I ordered a pumpkin flower huarache, and it was bland, except for the slivers of green pepper. The horchata (sweetened rice drink) was very watery, as if they kept adding new ice every day but not new flavoring. My husband's fried pepper dish was pretty good, but the rice and refried beans were just average. On the upside, there were some nice perks. The televisions showed a variety of sports events, including Crashed Ice in a foreign country. It's always nice to have a restaurant with a parking lot in the city. Our server appeared to be bilingual. There were enough plusses to make me willing to try there again, but it does give me pause when I leave a Mexican restaurant thinking, "I can make better refried beans than that!" This was my first experience at this Los Ocampo location. I am never in Saint Paul but my boyfriend wanted Margaritas after getting his hair cut. The service was horrible;- the waiter never came until we had to request one. The menu is extremely over priced for a Mexican restaurant. You can get half the price and more amazing food off lake street. The margarita was sub-par- the waiter dropped off our tab and ever returned. Came here with a group of friends for a birthday lunch. We waited over 90 minutes before we got our food - and the restaurant wasn't even that busy. Food: Chips were decent, but lacking flavor. The entrees themselves were not good. Again, lacking flavor. Service was lacking - we were seated for 20 minutes before our order was even taken. We were just ready to leave when our orders FINALLY got to our table. Tl;dr I will NOT be returning because of the poor service, and long wait. The food was definitely not worth the LONG wait. Food is great. I have tried several dishes and they are really tasty, pretty authentic (born, raised and lived 30 years in Mexico). Service has always been really good dinning in. Today I ordered online to go. When I arrived, they had the order ready but incomplete as they only prepared one torta. I told the guy I have ordered 2 tortas. He was kinda rude and didn't believe me, even when I showed him the order he was doubtful. I had to wait for 15 more min to have the other torta. The guy never apologized, didn't offer me something to drink while I waited ( I had to ask him for a glass of water). Once the full order was ready he just gave me the bag, not a kind I'm sorry for the wait or anything a decent person would say in a restaurant where they messed up. Just plain bad customer service.
