This is your classic Tex-Mex restaurant with free bottomless chips and salsa for the table and kitschy Mexican-themed decorations. If that's the vibe you're looking for, this will work. I enjoyed the white sauce that came with the chips and salsa, though there was a hair in mine. The salsa was okay, but otherwise not notable. The chips were good. My wife got one of the 100's of combo's on the menu, which came with a chile relleno and an enchilada. She liked it well enough. I got the Burrito California with steak, and it was fine but not great. It lacked flavor overall. Service was decent, though we were the only people in the restaurant at noon on a Sunday which doesn't bode well. The restaurant charges a card fee of approximately 3.75% which exceeds the allowable amount in the Visa terms of service, and does not seem to make the legally required distinction between credit cards and debit cards (merchants are not allowed to charge fees on debit card transactions). Because of this, we will likely not be going back. read more

Very nice restaurant, right behind Target, almost passed it. Was greeted by the staff and sat in the booths. Nice and comfortable seating with privacy, also there are tables for larger families to dine in. I was greeted with chips and salsa along with a nice queso sauce that had a nice spicy hint. I ordered the carnitas platter, which came with rice and beans and salad with guacamole. It was so tasty, came with 4 tortillas to make your own tacos. Very flavorful and crispy carnitas. I noticed there were some optional sauces on the side but wish the dish came with a traditional house made salsa verde instead. To drink I had a Jarrito Tamarind flavor, very classic and paired so well. I was very full by the end and that was a total of 20$ for both. Service was great, the bathroom was very clean, the team was alert at all times. Will definitely come back again to try their mole enchiladas. read more

I'm in town for work and like trying different restaurants, especially Mexican food, and this place did not disappoint. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try. Not impressed with the food here at all. It was BLAND and FLAVORLESS. The chimichangas were soggy....not crisp. The shredded beef had NO seasoning. The nachos didn't have meat, cheese or sauce on half the plate....the other half of the plate was only plain chips. The queso was watery with no taste. We will not be returning. Sometimes I know better than to try a new place, when I already have a good Mexican spot that I like. But I wanted to try this place. It fell short all around. The service was subpar at best. She never brought us any refills on drinks and never checked in to see how the food was. From the start, the chips and salsa were very bland. The salsa tasted like red colored water. The chips were nothing special and tasted like they were out of a bag. There is a creamy dip that is served with the chips & salsa, I did not care for it. It had a strange after taste and I could not quite put my finger on what the sauce was suppose to be. We ordered the small queso, the size was ok but the flavor lacked in all areas. It was bland and just tasted like some white queso blanco Velveeta cheese. It needs some spice and flavoring. I ordered the chicken fajitas, to no surprise they were bland and tasted like a plain chicken breast. There also was not much chicken, it was mostly just the veggies which costs so little of course. So definitely not worth the price. The tortillas also were not homemade like most restaurants. My bf ordered the lobster enchiladas, he liked them. They were not the best he has ever had but they were good. They used imitation crab and shrimp in them. The rice was probably the most flavorful thing I ate there. I would not go back and I definitely would not recommend. I should have known based on the empty seating availability. But at least I can say I tried it. read more

I met fellow GTAer, Sarah, through Yelp. We then met at the Yelpies a few years ago. She came over to meet me and congratulated me, which was so sweet. As time went on, we both realized that we had lived in Minnesota, in different cities. How cool is that? The odds should be slim, right? I tend to stay in Eagan when I'm in the Twin Cities. It's a six-minute drive to the airport. It's fifteen minutes away to see Minnesota Wild games. I love the shopping and eateries in the area. On this trip, we both realized that I was in her old 'hood. She recommended heading to El Parian Mexican Restaurant. Her favourite dish is the shrimp chimichanga. I immediately bookmarked it. A few days later, after watching a matinee at Emagine Eagan, I decided to get dinner from El Parian. Still at the movie theatre, I placed my takeout order through the GrubHub feature on the Yelp app. Since there was a threat of heavy snow and wind the following day, I ordered more food in case I couldn't go out. I got the following items: - Shrimp chimichanga with a side of rice - Beef burrito, beef enchilada, and tamale combo dinner I got both without sour cream. I paid through the app and it was so easy. I took my time driving over to El Parian. It's in a plaza next to a Chinese restaurant. My order was ready by the time I parked. There was plenty of parking available. I believe that my order took twenty minutes from the time that my order was completed. I walked into the restaurant and a woman warmly welcomed me. I indicated that I had a GrubHub order. She knew exactly where my order was. She handed me my bag of food. It looked huge! I thanked her and headed to my car. I then drove back to the hotel to eat in my room. The portions are gigantic! Each entree came in a huge circular aluminum container. I had the shrimp chimichanga first. The top part of my chimichanga got stuck to the lid. It was gigantic with a generous amount of rice on the side. The shrimp were whole, large, and grilled. This place did not skimp on anything. There were green peppers, onions, and a lot more packed into this chimichanga. It was yummy and comforting on a cold night. I ate the entire thing, but couldn't polish off all the rice. The rice was flavourful. I saved the rest of it to heat up for lunch the following day. I had the tamale the following day with the rice. I love a good tamale. It was equally as yummy. I added the tomato sauce to it and the rice. It was so good. That sauce needs to be bottled up! The meals came with chips, salsa, and a spicy dipping sauce. I had half of the chips when I brought my food home. The chips were still warm. The salsa was delicious and bright. The spicy dipping sauce was yummy and wasn't overly spicy heatwise. The next day, they still tasted yummy. I didn't have warm chips, but they were still crunchy. I also got a salad. It was oddly super spicy. I loved the creamy avocado in it, with fresh diced tomatoes. After a while, it was way too spicy that I had to stop eating it and put out the fire happening in my mouth. It took a third meal to polish off the beef burrito and beef enchilada. OMG! They were seasoned well and so scrumptious even as leftovers. They were stuffed with ground beef and were enjoyable with that red sauce. I had it for lunch two days later when it was frigid outside and I felt like hibernating a bit longer. I did order way too much food. No regrets! I got churros, too. They weren't terribly sweet, which I appreciated. I managed to eat a couple the first night. They were good, but needed more cinnamon for my liking. I ate the rest of the following day. Had I had more room in my stomach, I would have devoured them all the first night. I couldn't. I think my stomach is smaller these days than it used to be. My friend's recommendation was excellent. I'm so glad that I got food from El Parian. I'd return to get more when I'm back in town. One Star - Queso Quest Gone Wrong Called in around 1:15--could barely hear over the phone noise but managed to get our order in. Drove 20 minutes to pick it up, only to find the $10 queso missing from the bag. Not ideal, but fine--we go back. Now the food's cold, and the "make it right" effort? A sad little sauce cup of queso. When we pointed it out, the guy tried to convince us that was a large. Spoiler: it wasn't. We even brought the receipt. Still got the runaround. I wasn't expecting to eat here, but a sequence of errands left me hungry in this neighborhood. I'm really glad I came in because I was fed quickly and to great satisfaction. My friendly, upbeat server brought me a big basket of chips right away with two dipping sauces; a mild, chunky salsa and a white mayo-esque one. They have a large menu which is heavy on seafood options, and really so many other options that I got a little lost trying to find an enchillada entree. I did find and order Enchilladas Rojas, and they were awesome. Quite spicy, and plump with tender steak shreds. I ate it up with speed and enthusiasm. They were quite busy when I came in, but my service was very fast and cheery. A++, would Mexican again. read more

Yum! Just stopped off the side of the interstate and found this gem. Enchiladas poblanos is very good. While not my favorite mole stateside, this is by far the 2nd best I have had in the US. It's Taco Tuesday and being a native Californian tacos have been my favorite food since I was in grade school. They have 3 hardshell beef tacos for $5. The beef was tasty but the tacos came resting in grease. I allowed them to drain while tipping which made the shells soggy. Just lettuce and cheese, they were ok for the price. I had chili verde with steak. Tasty but zero heat. Beans were good as was the rice but they were swimming in too much verde sauce. Service was good and the place is super clean and everyone was very nice. I expected more! Would I recommend....I would give them a second chance. read more

It's been many, many years since I was truly enthused about a Tex Mex/Mexicali/Mexican restaurant in the midwest. We found one deserving here! Flavor-filled bites as close to perfect and just the way you like it. While there are platters offered that include unusual ingredients (a tip of the Chef's hat to their welcome varying from 'usual offerings') there are solid takes on standard menu items. The difference here is that a) you can choose not to have the usual accompaniments of Spanish Rice and brown refried bean sides, or keep them. Items we found noteworthy were the Chili Relleno with velvety cheeses and my wife (a tamale aficionado) RAVED about their house-made versions of this favorite dish. I chose basically: one each--chicken enchilada, beans and beef tostada, and chicken crisp taco, served sans-sides. Let me tell you, there were no gastronomic 'corners' cut with anything we were served. Every meat in these dishes was perfectly and carefully prepared. Chicken tender and oven-roasted flavorful, crisp shells, all accompanied by house made salsas of your desired heat-level. Great to know that a new friend was made tonight, and may I add the margaritas are very well-blended and classically composed. Great food in a well-lit restaurant with professional, helpful servers. I was visiting from out of town and went to El Parian with a friend who is local to Eagan. I had the carnitas meal. The pork was perfectly prepared. Everything was served quickly, hot and delicious. Also ordered additional guacamole, which was also very good. (I know, you might ask, how can you mess up guacamole...but you can.) What can I say, the food was excellent and the service wonderful. We came back a few nights later on my last evening in town. For the finish of to a great meal we decided to have the flan, which is made in house and was a real treat! Really good for its price, I got more food than I was expecting and it was still warm after being delivered. The tamal was a bit too dry even with the red sauce on it and the enchilada was overly greasy, but I was very happy with the chile relleno. Only one visit but wow this is good. Fajitas (chicken) w/ corn tortillas. Seasoned perfectly, juicy, spicy. Had a side of "chilies torreados" (fried jalapenos) to take to the next level of heat. I judge Mexican restaurants based on tacos Tacos are my go to food when it comes to Mexican. A friend brought me here and talked me into enchiladas. He said they are outstanding here. I ordered three chicken enchiladas al la carts. My friend had the dinner with rice and refried beans. I was stuffed after two and they were very tasty. Looking at the other orders people had...they were all very good portions. Service was decent. They do have seating outside too. A plus is the complimentary chips and salsa. With a 4.5 star rating and almost 100 reviews I was excited to try this strip mall find but sadly, that's all it is - a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall. It's not bad by any means, but it's a dime a dozen kind of place. For me, it was interchangeable with any number of middle of the road Mexican places. Maybe there aren't a ton of offerings in MSP and this takes the cake, but south-central Wisconsin has about a million or so places to choose from and El Parian would fall in the middle of that pack. We came in at 2:30 on a Sunday, just the time they roll into their dinner menu. The prices go up with the rollover, and I thought it was a little overpriced for the food and service. You grab your own menu and seat yourself, and our server (who was making the rounds throughout the restaurant) kept interaction minimal. When you sit you are given salsa and a sauce that reminded us quite a bit of ranch dressing. Tasty, but not what I'd generally dunk a tortilla chip into. I ordered the chicken chimichanga (aka what I order at nearly every new Mexican restaurant I go to) and choice rice for my side. My chimis were good and were served in two long, skinny rolled tortillas and covered in queso. Nothing to wow me, but it hit the spot. The rice was pretty good, especially the bits that soaked up the extra queso. My favorite part of the decor was the large paintings adorning the walls - they were vibrant and cinematic and a nice reprieve from the typical woven blankets/sombreros/etc. you often find. This is a family friendly restaurant. We weren't sure what to do when we entered but we think it is a seat yourself place. Service was good - you get free chips/salsa so apps may be unnecessary. I ordered the burrito roqueta. It was different than most burritos I have had but definitely a winner. I would maybe have preferred the cheese sauce on the side since it kind of overpowered the rest of the flavors, but everything tasted great. I'll give credit to Yelp for making me rethink my restaurant choices and not always going for the same ol' same ol'. Today was a casual business lunch, and we both wanted Mexican and needed a quiet place-this rules out Chipotle, and while I like El Loro, they often have a roaming mariachi band. Not cool. So, Yelp pointed us over to El Parian. First impression-super clean and a sincerely warm and friendly staff. I can't remember the last time a waiter made me feel so welcome at a restaurant. Extra bonus points for bringing me water with lime when I asked for it. 90% of the time when I ask for lime with water, I get lemon. I was pleasantly surprised to see the menu had a ceviche tostada. I haven't seen that on any menu in the Twin Cities. We ordered the ceviche and split a couple chicken enchiladas since neither of us was famished. The chips and salsa were very good; I'll ask if they have a hotter salsa the next time I return. The chips are also served with queso dip, kind of weak-but I'm not a fan anyway. The food came out very fast. The ceviche was everything it's supposed to be-bright, fresh, flavorful...delicious! The chicken enchiladas weren't bad-the chicken was pulled breast meat, so the meat was a little dry. The rice was pretty much there for the sake of filler. 2018 Update! I'm a huge fan! Love the chicken soup, especially when I'm nursing a cold, or when the Minnesota winter is relentless. The Del Mar fajitas with loads of seafood are my favorite. Nestled in between Anna Chung Chinese Restaurant and Dominick's Pizza and Family Restaurant lies the nondescript El Parian Mexican Restaurant, a hidden jewel in Eagan, MN. Driven by a desire for chips and salsa, I ventured out from my hotel to partake. I arrived at 5pm, the beginning of traditional dinner service. I was pleased to find four other parties in various stages of their dining experiences. I secured a booth with a view of the television since I was dining alone. True to form, soccer was the program of choice. My server arrived seconds later to take my drink order. After a quick trip to the back, he returned with my drink, chips, salsa and ranchero dip. I ordered queso dip as well. ASIDE- Why do Mexican Restaurants in these parts insist on putting Hidden Valley Ranch in bowl and passing it off as a dip? I'll never know... I ordered the beef fajitas minus the tomatoes, cooked with the onions and peppers. After my last experience at a Minneapolis area eatery, I decided to steer clear. My queso dip arrived shortly after I ordered, hot and fresh. It was creamy without being too thin and had a great flavor. The salsa was a perfect consistency as well. Very flavorful with a medium heat level. Made in-house, El Parian salsa could be bottled and sold as a nice side business-it is that good. I probably could have (and should have) stopped with the chips, salsa and queso. But alas, the fajitas were already ordered, so what could I do? The main course arrived steaming and sizzling accompanied by flour tortillas and a plate of rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole salad. The first thing readily apparent was the seasoning on the fajitas. Not from smell or taste, but from sight. The strip steak, onions and peppers were coated with a light tomato-cilantro sauce the practically ensured that that this entree would not disappoint. Turns out I was right. The flavor of the sauce permiated the tender meat, sautéed onions and crisp peppers, inviting me to continue to come back for more, which I did. Several steaming tortillas later, I consumed my fill, with food still left on the plate and a wide smile on my face. The service was adequate, but that's not why I came anyway... If you're in Eagan and craving Mexican food, do yourself a favor and stop by El Parian. Chances are, you'll go out of your way to visit again and again. read more
