Barrio BX hands down has the best mofongo I've ever tried! Even better than the ones I've had in PR. I definitely recommend getting this. The sauce they put on top is amazing! My partner also enjoyed his tripleta sandwich. The atmosphere is lively with lots of salsa music. I think at night it might turn into more dancing since they have a DJ booth set up. Barrio BX is 5 stars for food, but the service can be improved. We waited almost 20 minutes for a server to great us and take our drink orders. The food itself also took a while to come out. 9/5/25 - I ordered Bistec Encebollado. As a Boricua I have never had it with some kind of sauce. Its steak with onions. It was not even appealing looking. Waitress said thats the way they make it. I didnt want it. I asked for it as it is normally served. They returned with a steak they washed that nasty sauce off of. Been here before and aside from the music being crazy loud, food was good. I came here for dinner yesterday for the first time and I have to say I will for sure be back. Let's start off with how attentive the hostess and our waitress was : consistently making sure we were good at the table with food and drinks. The music was a great mix of your Spanish music , freestyle and of course some throwback bangers. I ordered the white sangria aka GASOLINA and it was the best I've had in a while. 10/10 hands down. Came here on a trip with a family of 6 and we all agreed that this was worth the train trip from our hotel in manhattan. The art was beautiful. My friend and I dined here mid week during HH which runs daily until 8pm. $7 margaritas, sangria, mojitos & piraguas (shaved ice). I had a margarita & a piragua. That piragua is strongggggg but very good! For food I had the shrimp mofongo. It was so full of seasoning, lacking nothing and leaving me wanting more! My friend and I also shared corn fritters which were a sweet treat. My waitress was very attentive, consistently checking in to make sure we weren't in need of anything. Barrio BX, kudos to them opening locally during unfavorable conditions that is Covid-19. I wasn't all that ready to try out delivery from this establishment, but my friends were. So who am I to hinder the support of a new local restaurant trying to remain open during a pandemic? So forging ahead, we used the Yelp delivery app and ordered Chicken Alcapurrias, Criollo Salad, Sautéed Zucchini and Pernil which turned out to be a decent portion served with a container of white rice and side of red beans. Pushing our boundaries to change things up, we also ordered dessert, Chocolate Cake. We should've stuck with no dessert. More on that later. After an expensive total of $80.00+ without tip for two apps, a side salad and a main, we pondered that this had better be worth it. Set time for delivery was promised for 60 mins. Moments after placing our order we received a call that they were out of chocolate cake. Choices were Cheese Flan or original Flan. No one cared for cheese Flan so we went with the original. Forty minutes later our order arrived, hot where it needed to be hot and cold where cold. Good start. The Alcapurrias, which I've never had before were unexpected and really good. The Pernil was plentiful, seasoned authentically and surprisingly very tender. Beans could've had more flavor but were easily doctored up. On to the dessert. The Flan's texture was thick and creamy as I've had in the past and not custardy which is a turn off. But more importantly the disappointment was that it was a Cheese Flan instead of the original as discussed. So that was an unfortunate comical waste. Aside from the dessert mix-up, mistakes happen, and the very high price of our order, we would recommend this spot with a forewarning to double check your order and be prepared to pay premium covid prices. read more

I don't live that far from this place so once i saw it, i decided to try it out. Aside from the food which was very yummy, I had the pleasure to meet and chat it up with the co-owners of the restaurant. They made us feel so welcomed and advised us what to get/ try out. You don't always get the chance to do so. My friend had the empanadas and I had the chicken salad. I would definitely go back just to try their other meals! Never started to write a review while literally sitting in the restaurant but I couldn't let the moment pass. If I had to use only one word to describe this place it would be authentic. People come here to be happy and free. True to the name, Barrio BX conjures feelings of home and community. There are no posers at this spot. Just beautiful people enjoying themselves. This gem is located right off the Throgs Neck Bridge. Parking is available on the street and nearby lot. As you approach it feels like someone took a bar from Miami and transplanted it to NY. The remarkably prepossessing crowd is complemented by a fantastic DJ delivering a fusion of urban, soul, R&B, Latin, and house music. The details really make this place. From the Puerto Rican flag painted on the outdoor patio to the mural inside you encounter a structure that takes inspiration from its Afro-Caribbean roots. As nice as this place is, the food is the genuine star of the show. I had a seafood salad of epic proportions. Thought it would be a bland variety of lettuce sprinkled with shrimp. Couldn't be farther from the truth. Calamari tasted like it was caught that morning. Never had better. And it was so sizable that I couldn't indulge beyond a few bites of delicious fried plantains. And likewise, the mojito isn't what I'm used to. It is a real standout, luxurious and refreshing and perfect for the summer. My friend and I got together and took a trip to this restaurant. When I arrived I found parking right away nearby. We walked in and was greeted. We decided to sit at the bar and Alexa was so awesome to us. She is the manager and the bartender and she treated us so well. They have bottomless mimosas that was so good and they give you mini carafes to drink from directly. For my meal I got the crab stew and my friend got the mofongo with meat. It took a bit for it to come out as I believe they make everything fresh. When it all came out the food looked awesome. I dug in and the stew was good, the only downfall was the little crab shells that was in the stew so I had to be careful. While we ate the dj was blazing and we enjoyed the music. My first time attending Barrio and it was on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner. Disclaimer: depending where you are located it is definitely a drive BUT well worth it! Barrio is the cutest intimate Puerto Rican restaurant located in the Bx. Coming from a Latino background, it can be hard to find places that cater to culture and truly being the vibe! Let me tell you that Barrio did NOT disappoint. There was a DJ playing all the tunes setting the vibes, and all tv's were displayed with the baseball games. The only downfall is they do not take reservations so it can be a bit of a wait depending on the night & number of people. Besides that part the food, drinks, service of the place are definitely 10/10. The food was prepared in a timely manner, and so delicious! They even offer vegetarian /vegan options which was immaculate because Spanish restaurants normally don't cater to those diets lol. I've passed Barrio Bronx on several occasions while in the Throgs Neck section of The Bronx and I was finally able to make it there with my wife for a quick adult beverage "sans children" (no kids). We arrived on a Saturday a little after 5:30pm and decided to sit at the bar to grab a few aperitivos (appetizers) and a few rounds of drinks. The spot was pretty packed from the brunch crew. We ordered the Passionfruit Piragua and a classic Piña Colada, the latter was served in a half carafe and looked enormous. Both drinks were pretty good but the Piña Colada was definitely light on the rum. We ordered the following appetizers because we didn't have much time for the full dining experience: - Bacalaitos (Fried Codfish) served in about six to eight slices (like a pizza pie). I definitely enjoyed flavor and the crispy edges; - Chicharron De Pollo Sin Hueso (Fried Boneless Chicken Chunks). Great flavor but a bit on the salty side. I recommend the cilantro dipping sauce; - Amarillos (Sweet Plantains) - the sweetest, softest maduros I've tasted in years. They were perfect and I would definitely recommend them... if every batch is just like it; - Relleno De Papa (Potato Croquette Stuffed with Beef). Great presentation, three croquettes that are the size of a handball or smaller than a baseball. Unfortunately, this dish did not live up to the hype because the potato and meat were both bland. Regarding the staff, the bartenders were very nice and attentive. The kitchen, on the other hand, needs to get it together. It took 60 minutes from the time the order was placed until it actually appeared at the bar. I was close to canceling the order but then what type of review could I write? To recap, I ordered three appetizers and a side order of plantains. An order that ANY cuchifrito spot in NYC could deliver in under ten minutes. My disappointment is the lack of communication between the front and back end of the house. I asked the bartenders to look into the food delay twice and they did their best to expedite the request to no avail. I'm a huge advocate and supporter of minority-owned businesses so I have every intention of returning to this venue with hopes to update this review to 4 or 5 stars because I believe this experience may have been the result of an off day, it happens!!! read more

After that, it took another 15 mins for us to get our drinks and I watched as all the other tables were being given refills. Thankfully, the manager gave us complimentary shots for our wait. Iight so boom. I saw this place on IG and it looked amazinggggg. So on this here Sunday when my girl and I were looking for a brunch I said hey, let's give it a go. And let me tell you, best decision I made in a while. When we arrived they had outdoor seating which was separated by tall plexiglass and accompanied with heating lamps. Win. We put our name down on the waitlist and were told it would be 25 minutes. No prob. In those 25 mins the owner approached us, introduced himself and we had a really nice convo (small talk) about the restaurant and ourselves. As a fan of hospitality & customer service, I really appreciated this gesture. For me, it's the little things. In a little less than 25 minutes, our table was ready and the festivities began. A DJ was in there spinning Spanish, hip hop & rnb tunes. Love to hear it. Inside, the tables were socially distanced as well. You can tell that they were very intentional about setup which I love. We sat at about 2:25, brunch is from 12-4, but what I loved is in addition to the brunch entrees (which looked scrumptious) you could also order from the dinner menu and still get bottomless! They offer bottomless sangria, mimosas and rum punch and an entree (from the brunch or dinner menu) is required to purchase bottomless. If you only wanted an appetizer from the dinner menu, you'd have to order a side as well in order to get the bottomless. And they give bread for the table which I literally could've eaten by itself as a meal. I know it's grilled, idk what else they baste it in aside from butter but babyyyyyy omg it was good. I ordered the skirt steak with rice & beans & my homegirl ordered the coquito French toast with chicharron de pollo. Let me tell you. That food was FIRE! Ughhh. Portion size was fantastic, flavor was on the money. No complaints. All smiles and good eats. We both had the rum punch and it was gooooodddd. By gooooodddd I mean both tasty & strong. My favorite kind. The refills were on point, music was on point, and the owner even came over to check on us & take a shot. Honestly I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I ordered the tamarind mojito and was transported back to Puerto Rico. The flavor was refreshing and not overly sweet. I tried my friends classic margarita and one of the best I had. Barrio is such a hidden gem in the bronx with great Puerto Rican food. Everything was great... The drinks, food, aesthetics, and overall vibe were 9/10.
