We went to Barranco on a Thursday evening with reservations. We were greeted cheerfully and seated promptly. The drinks were refreshing and fresh. A few of our favorite dishes were the tuna cebiche with yucca chips and the quinoa crusted prawns. The food was delicious and our server Mario was attentive and friendly. We will definitely be back! read more

I wish I had taken some pics of the dishes here, but I was so hungry I just started eating. We came here for a date and the food did not disappoint. I ordered the chorizo and potato empanadas, langostino, and bolitas de yucca. It was all ah-mazing. I'll just say, I'm glad I wore pants with an elastic waistband. Hubby ordered the lomo saltado which had great flavor, and we finished off with the coconut panna cotta. I'm so glad we decided to try this place, and will be back with the family. They are only doing outdoor seating right now, but with the weather warming up it was lovely outside. read more

Great place to go for Peruvian food. Went here back in 2019 and came back for an early Mother's Day dinner. There's now live music and outdoor seating. Empanadas we're great, though everyone ate it before I could take a picture of it. It was crowded and they were able to fit our party of 10. I got the Salmon, it was excellent. Looks like we're all coming back separately too. Parking is a little challenging, but overall great. read more

i met some friends her for lunch today. The atmosphere (outdoor seating) was nice. we each ordered different dishes trying a bit of each. The chicken chicharrones (nuggets) were tender and well cooked, although a bit too salty. their costellitas (deep fried BBQ pork spareribs) were delicious! I started out with the Peruvian Dancer cocktail That was effen good and had better be for $15! i also ordered the paella. I love me a good paella. I've had a few paellas in my life - both Spanish and Peruvian. I don't know if I would call what they served paella. it was swimming in a tomato sauce. While the flavor was fine, the shrimp, muscles, and clams were over cooked and chewy. It was quite a disappointment compared to the other dishes. I don't know what some of these reviewers are thinking when they say the paella was great. Maybe another cook was working at the time or they just don't know what a good paella is, but that definitely wasn't it! Overall, the experience was nice but i don't think i'll be back. it's a bit too pricy to experiment given the small portions. read more

Barranco - Seared tuna - Peruvian Near Me - Lafayette, California

Good tasting food, but too pricey for what you get. Outdoor dining was nice, though a bit more heat-lamps would be appreciated now that it is getting colder. Service was friendly and attentive. They were out of two of the dishes we ordered at 5pm on a Saturday, which was a little disappointing. Telling diners in advance at the start of dinner can at least dampen the disappointment instead having to come back with bad news after ordering. Hits: Pisco sour cocktails were great. Perfect flavor, perfect frothiness. Fish Cebiche. Good quality ingredients, bright and refreshing. Alfajores: very good quality version of the classic cookie sandwiches. Chicken chicharrones. Not the crunchiest, but very juicy and they tasted good. Yucca fries: light and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Very enjoyable. Empanadas: though on the small side, the fillings had great flavor and the pastry was nice and flaky. Mixed: Pork stew: it tasted very good and was very tender, but the small portion for the price made it a bit of a disappointment. Tiny amount of plain white rice, no sides. A bit too simple and small for nearly 30 dollars. Peruvian paella: I thought it was alright, but my fellow diners weren't too impressed. Perhaps comparing it to the classic namesake sets up the wrong expectations. Chocolate lava cake: first go around had no lava at all. Got a second one which was much better. The vanilla bean ice cream was good. Misses: Quinoa flan. Conceptually doesn't really make much sense to add quinoa to what should be a creamy and custardy dessert, and as suspected, it didn't work. No added flavor, hurts the texture. The flan itself was also not particularly remarkable. Overall, we had a very enjoyable dinner, but the pricetag makes it hard to justify coming back too often. I recommend getting cocktails and sharing lots of appetizers. read more

Everything we had was delicious! Service was very friendly and excellent. Prices are a bit high for the portions, but I guess one could splurge a little sometimes for good quality food. Seafood Paella $28 - tasted really good! However, it was quite soupy so I wish they added some more rice to absorb all of that sauce. There are 2 large shrimps, 3 clams, 3 mussels, 3 small pieces of fish, some squid legs (I did not count that, lol)! Enough portion for 2. Empanada sampler $25 - 4 pieces, one of each kind... chorizo and potato, corn and cheese, chicken, mushroom. The crust is soooo flaky good! Each was slightly smaller than the palm of my hand, but each was filled with so much stuffing. Bolitas de yucca $16 - 3 pieces, this is okay but I won't get it again. Too expensive for the price, and really not that special. It' like a cheesy croquette. The description says "stuffed with ham", but there's only about 2-3 tiny cubes of ham inside. read more

I wouldn't say I'd rave, but for an irl COVID dining experience on their patio, it was a nice change of pace. Live music, a free mimosa with Yelp check-in, and some delicious eats. I found the food to be pricey for the portion size, but it was good and the seafood was fresh. We went with an array and shared: seafood paella, yucca fries, quinoa shrimp and the beet salad. Again, I can't complain about any of the dishes or even the prices, but portions aren't necessarily big. 4 dishes satisfied three women for lunch and was about $30ish per person with gratuity. As mentioned, the seafood was tasty. I wouldn't say any dish rang out as super flavorful and a must order, but I would order all of them again, and the shrimps with the sweet potato puree was my favorite and the beet salad was refreshing. Service was solid, and again on a Sunday afternoon, live music in the sunshine on the patio was needed. Not sure how this food would translate into takeout, but they do have an added menu of some delicious sounding sandwiches. If you're around on a weekend, enjoy the sunshine, live music and a little taste of Peru! read more

My first time in California and I had a good experience 2 weeks ago in the restaurant Barranco. It was really good like in Perú. The food is too expensive but delicious. Worth every dollar Paella, lomo and empanadas the best. I have to write this because the restaurant worth it. The service is so bad. It's the worst I've ever had. The servers is really careless. One of then I think is in training because she didn't wear uniform and wore a gym hoodie, I was surprise about that because the kind of the restaurant (expensive) she took the order and never came back to ask if I need anything else, desserts or drinks. Later I tried to talk with the other server but it was worse she dindn't know about the menu or allergies she didn't help us. All servers were sit at the bar. The mister that recieved in the front door was very friendly and he brought us the table. They have to work better costumer serveces or change for servers with more experience. At this point the restaurant wasn't fully saturday night and I felt that is the reason for why is empty. read more

I really, really wish this place was better!! We are residents of Lafayette and this is a great location! Service is awesome and the place is cute, it's just that the flavors in the food is very disappointing. I would suggest to the chef to keep it simple because they add unnecessary flavors like powdered sugar to a savory empanada- it's odd. I thought I didn't like Peruvian food after this place but later I was pleasantly redeemed by Altamirano in San Francisco. read more

My daughter and I came from Oakland and decided to give Downtown Lafayette restaurant a try. This area is lovely. It has a Lake Tahoe vibe. This place has outdoor dining only and curbside pick up. Staffs are very friendly, patient and kind. We took awhile ordering since we are not familiar with the food and our waitress was very patient. My daughter had the Crispy chicken sandwich and I had the Palta Rellena ( made of organic avocado with crispy chicken). Our food was delicious. My daughter loved her sandwich. I like my Palta Rellena but I got tired of the taste after having it-- it has Mayonnaise, I can compare it to a chicken salad (chicken with Mayo dressing). So if you are not a fan of chicken salad with Mayo this is not for you. Overall.. I would recommend this place. I will bring my hubby and son next time and try something different. read more

Pretty good little restaurant, but, as far as Peruvian food goes, they didn't knock it of the park. The standouts were a perfectly balanced cocktail called Juicy Jo, an avocado & chicken appetizer (delish!), Lomo Saltado and the alfajores & churros (though the churros needed a dipping sauce). Nothing was bad, but most dishes were missing the Wow! factor. There were also a couple of misses. One was definitely the pisco sour, which was all wrong and had a big shake of sweet cinnamon on top. In my opinion, you should keep classics as they should be! The aji de gallina was also slightly off. The potato pieces were huge and I'm pretty sure there were chunks of cotija cheese in it and a weird cheese grated on top. Comparing to Parada and Limon in nearby Walnut Creek, I feel like this would be my third choice. The ambience and the service were really good. Our waiter was really sweet and helpful....though he did take that yummy cocktail away before it was completely gone. Not ok! Overall, it was good not great, i would definitely go back to give it a second try. read more

Barranco seems like a great place to hangout, socialize, drink an afternoon away - and they've recently reopened their outdoor seating which looked extremely inviting and well-spaced! Located in the heart of Lafayette downtown, with prices in that category as well. I ordered takeout so no thoughts on service, but the good points are that the food was tasty - the adobo pork shoulder was yummy with a delicious sauce, and the arroz chaufa was flavorful. I'd probably pass on the fried calamari, there are other restaurants that do it better. I felt like the portions were a little small, whether it was because the take out boxes are large or because portions truly are small (I've posted photos so you can be the judge of that). You definitely won't have leftovers, and that made me miss some other great peruvian restaurants I've tried in the east bay that were both delicious and generously portioned - but I digress. This is where you come to people watch over some beautiful cocktails (they looked great btw), or if like me you're still not eating out yet, there's a BevMo a stone's throw away where you can pick up both your meal and your alc ;) read more

been here a couple of times recently for lunch and dinner and the experience is top-notch. one of my new go-to places in downtown Lafayette. everything is good and the service is always pleasant and helpful. I love the Aji Gallina (chicken stew) and the Adobo. the empanadas are also good and the Bolitas de Yuca (stuffed yuca balls) is fantastic. really cool cocktail menu (a few pisco drinks, since it's a Peruvian place). nice outdoor seating that's elevated off the sidewalk, which is nice. highly recommended! read more

The food and service here was wonderful. We arrived and were offered a table near the door or, if we didn't mind waiting about five minutes, could have a table further in. We chose to wait because the front was pretty cold. In about five minutes, we were led to our table in the back which seemed fine until we realized it was just as cold. We dealt with it and put our jackets back on. We noticed other diners with their jackets on too so I guess it wasn't just us who felt the chill. Anyways, we ordered and the food was delicious. We started with an ahi ceviche which was a bit too sweet for our taste but still good. For the entrees, we had two paellas, the short rib and a seafood bouillabaisse. All orders were great, especially the paellas. The service was the best. They kept filling our water and took away dishes promptly. They were attentive but not overbearing. I would recommend and will be back. read more

Wow! Just wow! Hands down one of my family's most memorable meals! Every single thing we ordered was amazing. Full of flavor, perfectly seasoned, served hot, came out at the perfect time, and the staff was so friendly! It felt like a nice warm hug! We ordered many seafood dishes and each one had PERFECTLY cooked seafood. My daughters chicken soup was so yummy and unexpectedly delightful. Our desserts were delicious, not too sweet, but super unique! From the appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks-everything was well made! Honestly, please do yourself a favor and eat here. We have been wanting to try Barranco for a while, and they did not disappoint. It was a beautiful, warm summer night, so we reserved a table outdoors. The outdoor seating is plentiful and staggered. Heat lamps if needed, and string lighting. Easy to enjoy your conversation without hearing everybody else's. On Friday nights there is a singer/guitarist who is so talented! We really enjoyed his music. We love Peruvian food and this place definitely rivals with Lima in Concord. It's a little more expensive, but so is the real estate in Lafayette, so it's understandable. The empanada taster was fantastic. We shared a Cebiche and short ribs, finished with a dreamy lava cake. Amazing meal! Looking forward to going back to try other dishes. Joella was our server and she had a great attention to detail and fun energy. read more

This restaurant has been on our to go to list for several months. We were in the area recently and tried it out. The ambiance is great with outdoor seating. The day we went was slow and we were seated quickly. After being seated we were not greeted or served. It appeared there were enough servers as many were standing around the kitchen area socializing. After approximately 15 minutes we left the restaurant without dining. read more

This review is for a take-out order. We ordered the 6 person family meal, ahi ceviche, ceviche China-peruano, double order of yucca chips, and empanada trio. Either ceviche (cebiche) is a must -- we preferred the China-peruano, but both were tasty. Tip: don't forget to order the yucca fries with it, or you'll be sorry. In a nutshell, everything was awesome. Zero complaints. The food was packed with care and ready for an on-time pickup. read more

My wife and I eat out a lot, but its rare that I'm inspired to write reviews. Most restaurants have decent food and try to have you enjoy the experience. To our surprise this was not the case at Barranco. We came in, seated and then proceeded to sit for 10 min without a single wait staff bothering to acknowledge us. Tables around us order, served, and ate while we sat. Fifteen minutes goes by and my wife complains both to the host and a waitress. Still nothing. After 20min and two tables that came in after us were served, we left without even as much as a glass of water being served to us. We took the hint I guess. The good news out of all this was that we went to a nice restaurant (also Peruvian) in Walnut Creek. We had good food and service. The moral of this story is apparently don't go to Barranco! read more

My wife is Peruvian, and we've been to all the Peruvian restaurants in the Bay Area. i'm not sure why I waited so long to try this one in Lafayette. It's the best Peruvian restaurant I've tried, and like I say, we've tried them all -- this spot has the best service, best taste, best pisco sour, best ají, best vibe. This may sound funny, because macaroni and cheese is not traditional Peruvian because; however we ordered it for our toddler, and their mac and cheese puts the rest to shame. read more

All style but not a lot of substance. I've eaten at Parada (another Carlos Altamirano Peruvian concept restaurant) and remember having a similar experience. My friend and I walked in early on a Saturday night and were lucky to snag seats at the bar. The bartender was friendly but still new to the menu. She explained that the menu changes daily, when she struggled to explain one of the dishes and when she had to ask the other bartender for help in elaborating on one of the desserts. This is still a new restaurant, so I understand this and the fact that it is difficult to tend bar and take orders at the same time. Onto the food. The pacing was odd. My friend ordered a salad and the octopus entree, and I ordered a corn-cheese empanada $13 and their tequenos $13 (wontons filled with cheese). I would have expected to have gotten one of my dishes when my friend got her salad, but I was left to stare at her as she ate, then get both of my dishes at once and try to wolf one down before the other got soggy. All the sauces were too spicy, and the bartender said they didn't offer any milder options. I would have really loved to have a light condiment to my empanada and tequeno but both the pico and the panela sauces were way too spicy for me. Like a fast habanero kind of burn. Also, my friend's quinoa salad was very sweet and her octopus was overcooked. At the end of the day, it cost $26 for puff pastry, wontons, and cheese. My food was fine, but nothing mind blowing. The atmosphere is lovely here, but it is just not worth it. read more

In July, I had a lovely night eating al fresco at Barranco. Peruvian eats pair very well with perfect Californian weather (as does everything). First things first: we needed a chicken-stuffed avocado. I think this was a seasonal item, and I'm so thankful I got it into my stomach at the right time. We also shared ceviche, and Peruvian-style ceviche is always my favorite because it's prepared with Leche de Tigre, which is so mouthwateringly citrusy. I love the crunchy cancha too! I wanted some anticuchos (Peruvian skewers), and I wasn't messing around so I got me some grilled beef heart. They were delicious! Juicy meat with a little char, smothered in a tangy peppery sauce. Our server was great and gave helpful info and suggestions, and they accommodated for our adorable toddler in-tow. read more

Peruvian food has been the trendy food cuisine for some time now. It's getting a little pricey but I do enjoy it from time to time. We got yucca fries, fried plantains, fried seafood, paella, and of course ceviche and lomo saltado. The yucca fries were really good. Good texture and seasoned well the fried plaintains were good by themselves but a little too sweet with the maple syrup type sauce. The fried seafood was decent too. fried and seasoned well. The paella wasn't great. Not sure what paella was doing at a Peruvian restaurant anyways but paella does have a certain wow factor when done right. It wasn't done rights It was too saucy and didn't come in those large roasting pans like a traditional Spanish place. The ceviche was really good this the leche de tigre has the right amount of lime and salt. The yucca chips were absolutely perfect. Thin and perfectly crispy. The lomo saltado was also good. Fries maintained their structural integrity and shape even when drenched with the flavorful sauce. Decent meal but stick to the classics. Upscale Peruvian restaurant that was just A-OK. The food I would actually give 2 1/2 stars... My fiance and I rolled in right around opening for dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant is clean and the waiters and waitresses are very friendly. Slow, but friendly. When we sat down, they gave us a plate of what looked like the Peruvian version of chips and salsa, and while I enjoyed the salsa, the purple yam chips tasted burnt. Weird? I thought it maybe was just the one, but when I tried another one, same. It tasted burnt. We ordered the cebiche pescado, a chicken empanada to share, and the pescado a lo macho. My favorite was the chicken empanada. They're baked in house and had great flavor. The crust was perfect. But $13 worth???? I don't know. The cebiche was fresh, but the portion was very small. Same deal with the pescado a lo macho. And not only was the portion small, but there wasn't much seafood in the dish. I counted 3 mussels and 1 clam. For an almost $30 meal?? My fiance could've finished that himself. Those 3 things came out to $96. Oof. We semi-joked about grabbing a pizza from Pizza Antica to take home because of how that dinner really didn't fill us up at all. I don't think I'll be back. That was a pretty expensive meal for a so-so dinner. Bumped this review up to 3 stars, because the empanada was on point and the servers were very nice. read more
