Came here on a Sunday night because I love Peruvian and wanted to break away from some of my usuals. Things we ordered: -Beef empanadas - fine, but I've had significantly better. -ceviche chino-peruano - really disappointing and not great -we ordered chips to go with the ceviche and I was really confused because they were tiny and not really great for shoveling ceviche in my mouth -scallops - ok, again, nothing to write home about We were still hungry so we ordered the spareribs and those were good. A bill issue... We, my daughter and I, found the food good. Service on a special request, quite attentive. One thing bugged me: A charge for chips. We had some chips, a small plate, set out at the beginning, like bread at other places. We ate the chips, mostly. Then without further comment or request, a second, slightly larger plate of chips appeared about the time the appetizers arrived. We ate them as well, assuming they were, like bread in most places, "complementary." But, on the bill an extra charge for the second (I assume) serving of unasked for chips. Beware. read more

Brought my family here for mother's day yesterday and had a very nice experience. I tried: - Cebiche Chino Peruano: my favorite dish of the entire meal. The flavors were perfectly balanced. Just the right amount of acidity and the mango was a pleasant surprise - Papa a la Huancaina: the creamy huancaina sauce was delicious, although the potatoes were slightly undercooked. - Tequeños: 2nd favorite! I love all things fried cheese and the sweet and tangy tamarind sauce was a nice addition - Jalea: I misread the menu and didn't realize this was an entirely fried dish. I couldn't finish it, but it was good. All of the various seafood was cooked well and the batter was nicely seasoned. The aioli had a bit of a kick to it that I really liked. - Pescado a lo Macho: such a rich, flavorful dish!! It's very easy to overcook seafood in a stew but that didnt happen here. So good. I'd order it again. - Lomo Saltado: nothing beats a classic. Next time I'll add a fried egg! - Alfajores: who doesn't love these cookies?! - Lucuma Ice Cream: I'd never had this before so it was cool to try something new. The flavor reminds me of caramel or maple syrup. Very sweet. - Coconut Panna Cotta: I love coconut so this was right up my alley. And the consistency was just how I like, nice and thick. - Pisco Sour: sour lol, but good! I know some people aren't a fan of the egg whites but I like the frothiness. The restaurant itself is nice. I'm a sucker for industrial design and that's exactly what this is. The customer service was also good. We were warmly welcomed and our waiter was friendly! My first time in California and I had a good experience 2 weeks ago in the restaurant Barranco. It was really good like in Perú. The food is too expensive but delicious. Worth every dollar Paella, lomo and empanadas the best. I have to write this because the restaurant worth it. The service is so bad. It's the worst I've ever had. The servers is really careless. One of then I think is in training because she didn't wear uniform and wore a gym hoodie, I was surprise about that because the kind of the restaurant (expensive) she took the order and never came back to ask if I need anything else, desserts or drinks. Later I tried to talk with the other server but it was worse she dindn't know about the menu or allergies she didn't help us. All servers were sit at the bar. The mister that recieved in the front door was very friendly and he brought us the table. They have to work better costumer serveces or change for servers with more experience. At this point the restaurant wasn't fully saturday night and I felt that is the reason for why is empty. read more

Barranco - Salmon Bandido with a side of coconut rice - Peruvian Near Me - Lafayette, California

First time since February 2020 that a group of my friends got together irl to dine and dish. Barranco was a great choice. Except for a few minor missteps, nothing was truly a miss and most of the food was spectacular. The line cooks have their technique down and the exec chef really planned a well curated menu. The flavored lemonades had the right amount of tartness. I just wish the glasses had less ice and more beverage. The sangria was one of the best I've ever tasted. So perfect for the scorching hot day. The fried yucca balls were crave worthy. Delicate and not greasy at all. They were not the gut bombs I expected. The spareribs while not fall off the bone were still tender. The gochujang BBQ sauce was perfectly balanced with a nice gentle sweet heat. Enjoyed the crunchy coleslaw garnish. Nothing to say about the unassuming fried plantains except they were an awesome comfort food that I wanted to keep for myself. The empanadas were light and flaky. The chicken paella and lomo saltado were both good. Both meats were tender and juicy. The panna cotta was the star dessert. Light and delicate but not overly sweet, it showed the restrained hand of a master pastry chef. The alfajores were yummy but maybe not as the focus of a dish but as a garnish. With so many of the dishes being awesomely yummy, the slight missteps in the following stood out in comparison to the other dishes. The potatoes: the plate looked pretty but the disparate elements didn't really come together for me. The chicken chiccharones, basically nuggets, were a little greasy. The quinoa in the flan worked against the creaminess of the custard. It would probably have worked better as a toasted garnish sprinkled on top. The lava cake was dry and had no lava to speak of. Portions were slightly undersized for the price but that's the true cost of using quality ingredients, hiring skilled staff and creating a trendy dining space. Used to be a big fan but not so much anymore. Judging from the empty table on a Friday night I gather I'm not the only one. The biggest problem is the cost. $18 for an average salad when most high end places charge $10? $25 for ahi ceviche that is way too sweet? Or for 3 average sized shrimps breaded in quinoa? And why is everything topped with yellow drizzle that is not referenced in the item description? Some of us don't want sauces. And $15 for a weak drink seems high. The only reason I give 2* is for the servers which are great. But otherwise we have jumped the shark here. read more

I really, really wish this place was better!! We are residents of Lafayette and this is a great location! Service is awesome and the place is cute, it's just that the flavors in the food is very disappointing. I would suggest to the chef to keep it simple because they add unnecessary flavors like powdered sugar to a savory empanada- it's odd. Decent food, nice staff, good ambience. I tried the seafood paella (yum!), the palta rellena, and the yucca fries. It's a little pricey but it was all very good. The paella was saucy and I really liked that. Every other paella I've had has been more dry. I enjoyed the deep flavors, plentiful seafood, and portion size. Perfect for one or to share if you're getting other stuff and doing tapas style. The palta rellena was a little dry, it could have used a nice aioli or something. Also, some of the avocado was very brown, as in bad. I'm surprised they would serve this. The yucca fries, yum! Perfectly cooked, perfectly salted. There is some parking in the back. It gets busy in Lafayette but came early for dinner and was able to get a spot. It is metered parking everyday 9am-7pm. It was about $2.50 to park for 1.5 hrs. Don't have to pay after 7pm. We were seated on the back patio. They had a few heat lamps but it was particularly cold this evening so had to stay bundled up with my jacket on. They could add some overhead heatlamps as the ones they had were the smaller stand up ones. Had the salmon ($28) with blue mashed potatoes and veggies which were mainly sauteed onions with a tomato based sauce. The food was tasty. Service was good. They bring complimentary potato chips with a cilantro sauce out in the beginning. Overall enjoyable dining experience. read more

Located in the lovely neighborhood of Lafayette. Inviting layout, you can sit outside or inside. Peruvian inspired but from eating some of the food I'd like to say fusion, only because I can taste asian ingredients plus I have never seen Adobo and lobster mac and cheese listed at any Peruvian restaurant. Service was great, drinks were refreshing but food was A-ok. Let's see my fave were the Lobster mac and Ensalad salad. What fell short? Tasting of 3 ceviches- one tasted like Poke marinated, and the other two I was not fond of. The Ribs, a tad bit hard- I like ribs that fall off the bone and I could tell right away the smell was Asian. The Seafood Paella- a little watery. Usually it takes an hour to make this dish from all the places I've been too but was served within 15 mins. I'm not complaining but these are my personal opinions and great for a small city in Lafayette. I wished I tasted more authenticity. read more

After a long day at the Arts and Wine Festival I wanted to try something new, so I decided to try some Peruvian food. Yummm.... We had a Party of 7 and It was not very busy in there. We had outdoor seating which was very lovely. I was very, very excited when Yelp gave me a coupon in reward for 1st time checking in but was disappointed when the waiter said I couldn't use it :( FOOD: I ordered Fries (they were Dry and plain) Lomo saltado which look very delicious but was not. The meat was not well done like I had asked and the flavor was very plain. The fries that were on top of the meat were very good! It's also way overpriced. I don't mind spending money on good food, this wasn't it. Customer service: I would say it was an OK experience. We were able to sit at our table promptly. The waitress took some time to come and take our order. Cleanliness: Bathrooms were very clean and the tables as well. the interior of the restaurant looked very organized and modern. Overall: I think I would not come to this restaurant again but would instead try a more traditional Peruvian restaurant. read more

One of my favorite spots in the Bay Area. The cebiche is great! Always say yes to the home made chips for the cebiche. There's a few restaurants in this chain that I can review separately. The drinks are cold and nice. There's a lot of creativity with the starters, my personal favorite is: langostino crocantes... for the mains, we have tried almost all of them so far, and top scores for everything. The shining star is the Lomo Soltado obviously. But don't shy away from the Pescado a lo Macho! The service can be better but at least everyone is friendly and polite. Had dinner at Barranco last night, and we were seated at the bar. Toni was our bartender and he prepared us a pisco cocktail and a mezcal strawberry cocktail. Both cocktails were balanced and made with fresh fruit. We started with the empanadas sampler, and these were by far the best empanadas we have had in the area. The empanadas were served hot and when you took a bite, they were flaky and full of flavor. We also had the lomo saltado, and finished off with the chocolate soufflé. Everything was delicious, and the service by Toni was great... We did notice the restaurant manager did last call on food at 7:40 PM. We thought was odd since the restaurant closes until 9 PM, however, the bar remained open and Toni was able to hold our dessert for us in the back until we were done with our meals. The food and service here was wonderful. We arrived and were offered a table near the door or, if we didn't mind waiting about five minutes, could have a table further in. We chose to wait because the front was pretty cold. In about five minutes, we were led to our table in the back which seemed fine until we realized it was just as cold. We dealt with it and put our jackets back on. We noticed other diners with their jackets on too so I guess it wasn't just us who felt the chill. Anyways, we ordered and the food was delicious. We started with an ahi ceviche which was a bit too sweet for our taste but still good. For the entrees, we had two paellas, the short rib and a seafood bouillabaisse. All orders were great, especially the paellas. The service was the best. They kept filling our water and took away dishes promptly. They were attentive but not overbearing. Recently had Barranco's Peruvian cuisine delivered for dinner. Overall, this higher-end restaurant has savory flavors with high-quality ingredients in all of their dishes. I recommend eating in rather than delivery for some of the dishes which suffered from the delay between cooking and eating (details below). On the positive side, their chicken empanadas with Peruvian sauce were outstanding with a flaky pastry filled with succulent chicken and a wonderful dipping sauce. The seafood paella was also a standout dish filled with a variety of fresh, properly cooked seafood, tender bomba rice and a flavorful sauce spiked with saffron and paprika that tied everything together. The lomo saltado included tender stir-fried beef with onions and tomatoes, but the Yukon fries were soggy by the time they arrived. I wouldn't hesitate to enjoy their food again! read more

Great place to go for Peruvian food. Went here back in 2019 and came back for an early Mother's Day dinner. There's now live music and outdoor seating. Empanadas we're great, though everyone ate it before I could take a picture of it. It was crowded and they were able to fit our party of 10. I got the Salmon, it was excellent. Man, since Fresca in SF closed down (not the one in the avenues, but the other one)... I have been craving some Peruvian food and I really couldn't find any good ones in the East Bay, until right friggin now! We went crazy and ordered a bunch of stuff, but the fried plantains were excellent same with the potato chips!! MMMMM MMMMMM!!! The yucca fries were meh as well, I wasn't into them too much. Of course you gotta have the lomo saltado, but I've never had it with an egg before on top, so why didn't anyone tell me about this? That was amazingly delicious. The chicken paella was also incredible to eat. But we also had a fried seafood platter, but I didn't think it was all that. Just finished eating dinner here for Valentine's Day & my partner and I are so impressed! The ambiance of Barranco is soooo cute and chic. They have a patio with heaters, but we made reservations for inside. There were a good amount of people out there at around 9PM so I imagine those heaters work well. We weren't too hungry so we shared the scallop and shrimp cebiche and the aji de gallina. BOTH WERE SOOOOOO GOOD. The scallops and the shrimps were soooo sooo sooooo fresh. I've literally never had such fresh ceviche in my life. The portion was pretty small, 2 shrimps and like 6 small pieces of scallop, but 100% worth it. The aji de gallina was also so good. The flavor... rich and creamy. The chicken was perfectly tender, tasted like quality chicken. I can literally drink the sauce that the chicken was cooked in. We're already planning our next time back so we can try more of their menu items! I definitely want to check out their lomo saltado next time. read more

I was visiting my friend in Orinda and wanted to take her out for her birthday dinner early this year. She mentioned Barranco and I finally found myself dining in downtown Lafayette. They might be a sister restaurant or at least related to Parada and the Sanguchon food truck that I like as I noticed their cards at the hostess stand as well. We started with grilled baby octopus which were tender and flavorful and the ahi tuna cebiche chino peruano with an extra side of plantain chips. The ahi was fresh and not overpowered by too acidity so more reminiscent of a Hawaiian poke which I loved. For entrees, we had the pork adobo and the seafood stew. The pork adobo was just okay but I really enjoyed the pescado seafood stew as even the sauce was delicious that I wanted more rice to soak up every drop of it. The really disappointing dish for me was the chicken chicharron which was so dry that even the dipping sauces did not help. As a note, everything on their chicharron section does not mean it is served alongside chicharron but means whatever you order is fried. read more

I have been wanting to try Barranco for awhile. Originally we were suppose to go out for pizza but the wait at Paxti's was ridiculous. Barranco seated us right away on a Friday night around 7pm. This place is great if you want to share everything!! The only thing we didn't like were the bollitas because it had some type of sweet taste. The chocolate lava cake was also not worth it but we had a sweet tooth after dinner and decided to try it. I really liked the chicharones, it was just like fried chicken. We also got the Seafood Paella, Yucca Chips, Lomo Saltado, Empanadas (which were my favorite), another type of rice dish labeled as similar to an Asian fried rice. I actually preferred this one more than the paella. The paella wasn't too impressive but had a good amount of seafood. We were also wanting to try the churros but they were out - so disappointed because another server took our order for it but it never came and then our original server told us they were out. read more

The chicken chicharrones (nuggets) were tender and well cooked, although a bit too salty. their costellitas (deep fried BBQ pork spareribs) were delicious! I started out with the Peruvian Dancer cocktail That was effen good and had better be for $15! i also ordered the paella. I love me a good paella. I've had a few paellas in my life - both Spanish and Peruvian. I don't know if I would call what they served paella. it was swimming in a tomato sauce. While the flavor was fine, the shrimp, muscles, and clams were over cooked and chewy. It was quite a disappointment compared to the other dishes. I don't know what some of these reviewers are thinking when they say the paella was great. Maybe another cook was working at the time or they just don't know what a good paella is, but that definitely wasn't it! Overall, the experience was nice but i don't think i'll be back. it's a bit too pricy to experiment given the small portions. read more
