This is a neat little bakery that sells Japanese style buns, I like the bun with the noodles in it but that about it. I just had to try the deep fried curry beef bun here since the one at lucullus is delicious, however the one here is nothing compared to it. It's super oily, the yellow grease goes right throw 2 pieces of paper towel. the curry has no curry taste and the bun is mushy. Very disappointed, the buns are over priced, from $2 - 4 for one bun. I have tried 2 cakes, green tea/red bean and tiramisu. I have a sweet tooth and love sweets, but I find this a bit too sweet for me. It was nothing special. read more

A cute bakery located at J-Town, it is attached to the grocery store so you can buy your Japanese groceries in addition to grabbing pastries and cakes. I've had a number of the buns and overall they are pretty good though not exactly the same as in Japan sadly. Their turtle melon pan was pretty good and was cute. Their adzuki bean bun was also really delicious. If I need my fix of Japanese sweet breads then I would definitely come here. read more

Located as one of the stores in the cute and unqiue J-Town mall, this bakery sells an assortment of cakes, pastries and buns. I was craving tofu cheesecake since forever and Ive heard positive things about it here. They offer original, matcha and black sesame tofu cheesecake. I tried a slice of the matcha for 5.75. It was rather small for its cost, you can see the bakery skimps out on their portions of their slices and size of other baked goods. The flavour was nice, it was a refreshing taste with a smooth texture. But it barely had a prominent cheese taste. It was more like a matcha tofu mousse cause the filling was less dense and more fluffy. Overall, I am interested in indulging in their other pastries, but maybe on a special day because the price vs. thesize of the goods is offputting. read more

The best bakery in GTA for sure. Normally, I'm not a much of a big fan of breads but their breads are amazing. Its not dry at all and the amount of variation of breads they have makes you want to buy and try everything! The cream puff and yakisoba pan are my personal fav also their melon pan is the best one I ever had so far. Definitely worth the drive for me! read more

Didn't realized I never reviewed this place. I have tried their cakes and various pastries before. Their cakes are quite light, not so sweet and quite nice. My favourite was their tofu cheesecake. I came early this time so the bakery was full of baked goods. I selected a few varieties. Their kare pan (deep fried curry bun) was a bit in the oily side. Their bread buns are not the soft spongy kind you find at Chinese bakeries. It actually has a crunch to them if u hear them up in your oven. Like a crusty bun. I like that but wish they had more fillings for their buns. read more

Come here for the cream puffs. Leave with a cake! Hahaha... The pastries are so good. Nestled in the middle of J-Town, you'll find Bakery Nakamura. It shares building space with a grocery and a restaurant. It closes at 7pm along with the other J-Town stores. Plan accordingly! read more

Bakery Nakamura - Cream puff. Mmmmmmmm - Bakeries Near Me - Markham, Ontario

I hate writing poor reviews but for a bakery that lacks any physical character, and for the most part sells overpriced bread it's hard to give it a better rating that 2.5/5. Although, I'm giving it an extra +0.5 because I did come at the end of the day and missed out on their turtle shaped melon buns ): Souffle Cheesecake (2/5): Ever since we got an Uncle Tetsu downtown I've been itching to try out different Japanese/souffle cheesecakes wherever I can find them. I was quite excited to sample this seeing as this bakery is in the middle of J-town... however I was sadly disappointed at the dry base, and sticky texture of the cake. To be honest, I'd rather wait another 2.5 hours for Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake than eat another slice from this bakery again. knackwurst bun (3.5/5): hot dog buns are my weakness, so I had to try this knackwurst bun that was drizzled with ketchup :) It looked prettier than your average hot dog bun, but it boils down to it... this knackwurst is in essence your average hot dog bun at any other asian bakery. Tofu Cheesecake (4/5): The tofu cheesecake has got to be the one redeeming factor of this bakery. I thought it was something unique as I've never had this before. It's slightly creamier than a souffle cheesecake, it's pretty much a creamier version of tofu that sits on top of a graham cracker base that is topped with whipped cream and some fruits. It's delicious and I'm very happy I got to try it. Would definitely eat it again.. and again till I get fat :3 Cost (2/5): Damn was everything at this bakery expensive. Buns are $2, danishes are $2.20 and each cake slice is $4.25. The bun I tried is nothing special while the cake slices are hit and miss. However, seeing as I can get a whole 6" cake at Uncle Tetsu's for $8.88... you can start to see where the price comparison falls apart. Although MAYBE I'd consider paying $28 for a whole 6" tofu cheesecake... lol, it was really good! Service (3/5): Standard. Not much to say here. Ambiance (1/5): So I thought this would be a standalone bakery, but its in the middle of the J-town supermarket. It's an instant turn-off because as another reviewer wrote, "you can see their mess everywhere." The entire section of the bakery seems unkept and I'll admit alittle dirty. You are better off buying at a bakery in chinatown. Sorry Bakery Nakamura, but I'm not sure I'll be returning... even if you do have the cutest turtle shaped melon buns ): read more

5 stars for their bread and tofu cheese cake, and 1 star for their service. I enjoy so much of their tofu cheese cake, and I will always come back for it. Their bread is very fresh and tasty but it's just ordinary bread and just like all those asian's grocery store bread. However, I didn't enjoy their service, as the cashier guy who wear glasses and speaks english and "maybe Japanese?" is very rushy, rude and kinda disrespectful by giving me look. It's a very unpleasure experience since I have been to this bakery so many times and this is my first time getting this kind of vibe. I went there with my family and ordered a loaf of bread and i requested half a loaf and cut to sandwich thickness, he told me they only offer whole loaf now, so I was like okay so I will get a whole loaf, then he told me that they can't cut it to sandwich thickness and offered me to cut it to toast, then i was like okay. As he was talking, he didn't even make eye contact with me and busy with other thing and talking to other which is fine cuz I can tell that they are busy. I guess he was talking to me but I can't hear him well cuz he kept moving back and forth while talking behind the counter , then he was like " So what do you want?" I was like "okay then I will get the whole loaf with toast thickness" then he kinda gave me this look and make me feel like Im stupid or annoying. We all wearing mask during pandemic and sometimes we just can't hear each other properly. Honestly, no need to be rude to your customer when I already told you what I want and it was according to the menu but YOU CAN"T OFFER ANYTHING I WANT! at the end, when the lady cut the loaf for me she just cut half, and she forgot the other half. Clearly I can just get half a loaf instead of the whole loaf. If I see this man ever again when I go there to shop, I will just leave. read more

The turtle bun is a must get at Bakery Nakamura! Located right at Steeles and Woodbine inside J-Town, Bakery Nakamura is located inside a grocery store. There's always fresh buns available for people to purchase - tons of people come by to purchase them whenever I come, so I would say it's guaranteed fresh. The green tea turtle bun is $2.50 and is a signature item of this place. Their other buns range from $1.20 per piece to $4, so it's more expensive, but debatably worth purchasing as well - if you're up for the types of buns they sell! Bakery Nakamura also sells donuts, sandwiches and danishes as well as cakes and desserts. See if you can stop by on a regular weekday to be able to purchase some delicious baked items. read more

It's a small bakery space within J-Town. They have a good selection of Japanese inspired cakes, pastries, and buns. We came by on a Saturday afternoon and the shelves were looking quite empty already, more than half gone. We picked up a strawberry and mango slice, a black sesame tofu cheesecake slice, and a green tea red bean slice of cake, each $5.80. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and all very efficient. The cakes weren't that sweet and all very light and fluffy. The green tea slice was the sweetest and the strawberry/mango one was the most simple. read more

J-town bakery has always been popular, especially it's located very close to me, whenever I crave for dessert or special buns, it's my first to-go choice. Not only it has very creative kawaii buns, it's fillings are quite unique as well. (Strawberry cream, matcha cream, walnut-peach jam, etc) The reason for 3-star is due to down grade of the bun quality. I'd've given it a 2-star, but the cakes are still up to standard, so 3-star is fair. Nowadays, the fillings are half of the portion of what it used to be, (cost control?), the bun skins are thick and not as soft. I've tried it few times, hoping that it's just occasional outlier, but apparently it's the norm now. I'd still go for its cakes and special desserts, but I'd just go to t&t for its green tea pumpkin bun & Oreo cookie cream panda bun (the only two I like) Hope this review helps. read more

After an A-OK lunch at Cafe Green Tea, it was over to Nakamura for some treats! They never disappoint. I really love their rare cheesecake and other baked goods. Besides my one piece of cake allowance, we usually pick up some buns and other delights. Also, if you like light and tasty whole wheat bread, they have one of the best. We usually pick up the whole loaf - and it does not last long enough as our next trip to J-Town. The staff of women that run the place works hard but can be disorganized, and service might get slow at times - be patient, it's worth the small wait for a piece of heavenly dessert! read more

Been here a few times over the years. Located inside the supermarket they have all sorts of buns and cakes. The buns are baked fresh daily, you can tell it's very fresh and they taste good. Tofu cheesecake is something that they have that other bakeries don't. It a little on the pricey side for the amount that you get but I think it worth it. They also have cakes you can order. I love J-town! And this little bakery located inside the grocery store and along with other seafood and sushi places offers cute baked goods that you can't get anywhere in GTA. Ever since I saw the turtle bun on instagram, this place was on my list for a long time. They have this deal if you by 5 buns, you get discount. My favorite was an Anpanman bun filled with custard! It was soft and had a generous amount of cream inside. It was just too cute to eat at first. I will be making the next visit soon to try their cakes! All these positive reviews on their cakes make me want to try! Overall, highly recommend this bakery if you want to try something different from European or Chinese bakeries! They have a variety of matcha-flavored stuff too! read more

Incredibly dishonest place. I got there around 5:30pm-ish today, and picked up a loaf of bread with a price tag of $4.50. I went to pay, and the guy at the cashier said, "it's a day-old bread, is that okay?" I said "it's fine" and I proceeded to pay with a $5 bill. Then the guy said, " actually, it's not a day-old bread and it should be $5.10". So I put down a 10 cent, already not impressed. The guy said," I just put the price tag on, as we are about to close the store and we are preparing for tomorrow." So I told him, "then I should come tomorrow instead of today?" I did not want to make a big fuss over 60 cents, but I think they should have honored whatever the price tag indicated. read more

2.5 stars, around up to 3 stars. Japanese bakery located inside J-town. To be honest I am not sure why this place has such high ratings. I was disappointed with the pastries that I got. Buy 6 then it's tax free. Pastries are too dense nd dry and they seem to skimp on the fillings. I expected better quality for $2.5 bun. Matcha turtle was cute but mostly dough; didn't really have good flavour. Macha bun was mostly hollow inside. Sesame bun was tasty but could have used more sesame filling. read more

This small Japanese bakery is located in J-Town! They sell a variety of cakes, pastries, and buns. I've tried a few of their buns such as the chocolate cream horn, green tea an pan, and pear danish. They're pretty tasty, but a bit on the pricier side. In terms of cakes, I tried the tofu cheesecake. It's a nice light cake that's not too filling, while still having than cheese flavour. I really liked it! read more

Solid bakery that bakes loaf of bread, produces cute looking buns and offers a variety selection of cakes. I tried a fair amount of items from this bakery. First off, I usually get the 7 grain half loaf of bread. You can customize the thickness of the slice and how much you want as in half loaf and full loaf. The bread is fresh and goes bad quickly (which is a good thing since there are not that many preservatives and it was my fault for leaving it out of the fridge). The buns are a hit and miss at times. I enjoy the white chocolate eclairs and also the sausage wasabi buns. The turtle shaped bun wasn't as good as it appeared to be. The bakery is more on the expensive side in terms of price. The buns cost around $2-3 each but I believe that the loaf of bread is definitely worth the price. I do not buy any more loafs of bread from Loblaw since this bakery provides daily fresh bread. read more

I used to their bakery a lot, no matter the buns, cakes or the bread they made are really good.Even though they cost a bit too much, I still tempted to take a short trip there and buy their yummy products. HOWEVER, it seems that they are also very attractive to the flies too!! Today, I went there and wanted to a loaf of bread, I saw few flies on the cakes and tarts!! Oops, I couldn't stand it, I may not go there again unless they do something for it. Honestly, no matter how good they taste, cleanliness is so important!! read more

Came in to buy a birthday cake. They only had small cakes that serve about 6 and $30 each! I bought 2 to accommodate 13 people. Tried the black sesame tofu cheesecake and the green tea red bean cake. The black sesame tofu cheesecake was unique but weird tasting. I don't know how else to explain it. Everyone who sampled it agreed. The green tea red bean was a good flavor combination but I found the cake a little on the dry side. Looks like a lot of work was put into the cakes and they were very pretty looking, but could have tasted a bit better. Also tried a little green tea mochi cake. It looks like a little cupcake. It was also unique. It had the texture of a cake and the chewiness of mochi. I wish it had a little more green tea flavor. Found it a little bland. read more

Be Careful. Dishonest cashier. The power was out and the bakery could only take cash without receipt, when I was at the store. My 4 slices cakes cost $26.20. And I gave two $20 bills to the cashier, a guy who dressed in different uniform from rest of the team there and was giving the team order. He gave me back $3.80. I turn around a bit to be out of the next customer's way, but I knew this was not right. I went back to him and said I gave you two $20 bills...right away he opened the cash case and handed me $15. I said let's use the calculator. Then he took back $5. He never apologized. End of story. My instinct tells me: 1) He actually calculate fast without calculator; 2) He purposely did that and wanted to keep the $10, not by mistake, as people would apology for their mistakes but wouldn't admit their wrongdoing. read more

If you like desserts and pastries that are not too sweet, Bakery Nakamura is for you. The cake slices are almost too pretty to eat... almost. But what I love most here is the danish... jam, cheese, cinnamon raisin or apple (a slice of apple cooked in juice until sweet and almost candied, yet soft, sort of an apple confit) - much tastier and flakier than any danish you will ever have. The danish rivals the croissants of many pastry shops in Toronto, since Bakery Nakamura is a blend of French pastry methods with a Japanese twist. Love the bread at this place. This is located inside J-town. Although the breads are more expensive than other asian bakeries, it is totally worth it. The breads are so much more dense, so it is more filling. If you buy 6 breads, it becomes tax free. My favourite is the tuna with cheese bread and my mom loves the bacon bread. I also love their danishes which are also really good. Their breads are different from normal asian bakeries. Their breads have french influence so they tend to be harder, like french bread. If you like baguette type breads then this place is for you. I also love their loafs. The skin is chewy and the inside is super soft. You can have half a loaf or the full loaf. You can also ask them to cut it in different sizes like texas (thicker) or toast ( thinner). Their red bean sweet bread is also amazing. I bought the chestnut cake for my birthday last year and it was so good. It wasn't too sweet and there was good amount of chestnut. I also heard their tofu cheesecake is yummy. Gotta try that next time. read more

This bakery features an interesting variety of buns, some which I find better than others. I like the bacon twist, which is like a baguette braid with bacon in the middle --- makes for a great savoury snack. Unfortunately, the black sesame custard bun was disappointing, as the bun barely tasted of black sesame and there was just a small bit of, albeit tasty, custard. The curry beef doughnut is filled with yummy Japanese curry, with potato and carrots, but is regrettably greasy. Great concept, but perhaps it would be better if they fried it from frozen? They also have pre-made sandwiches, including - Pork cutlet with shredded cabbage on toasted white bread (delicious!) - Chicken cutlet with seasoned mayo and lettuce (also on toasted white bread, also very tasty!) - Chicken karaage on brioche, topped with a halved soya egg (love this one!) - Haven't tried the beef croquette on brioche or the noodle bun. My DC really enjoys the pastries, but I found the croissant and danishes to be okay (a step above grocery store; I prefer the more buttery traditional French style.) My Asian co-workers *love* the tiramisu but I have yet to try their cakes. Closed on Mondays. read more

We popped by because I heard that they had soy cheesecake. Lately the craze is Japanese cheesecake because its so light. Slices are about $5 a slice. I got the Rare cheesecake and my partner got the Green Tea soy cheesecake. I loved mine, it had different layers and textures, the bottom a thin biscuit crust, topped by light fluffy cheesecake, and the next layer had a light hint of lemon, and then lighter cheesecake on top. The green tea cheesecake was more of a mousse texture and we don't enjoy mousse. We also picked up a few buns to try out. Glad I did, good to know what that was like but we won't be buying those again. There were no names to identify the buns we got. We decided on a few, each with different shapes. One had scrambled egg inside, 2 others had vienna sausage.Texture of the bun was firm, and definitely a seaweed (which i enjoy) taste, but not on these buns. Oh well. Tried it. read more

Cashiers are very dishonest and have a rude attitude. I have been a big fan of this bakery ever since it opened as the only Japanese style bakery in town. But recently, I decided to stop going even though I still like their products. Their service is just so bad. The people at the casher and inside, they are not nice at all. It's not only the language barrier, but the attitudes. They never return emails. And now they started using plastic bags on every piece of bread while some countries are making a law of abandoning use of plastic bags. This is very unfortunate, but I am not going there anymore. read more

This bakery is located within J-Town which is a collection of japanese owned independent shops. I bought a half loaf of bread that is cut to exacting measurements based on the chart as I wanted the right bread for a french toast brulee. They make a fresh bread on the premises. It was perfect for toasting as well as the french toast recipe. In the past, using wonderbread was not suitable because I find the crust is not crisp enough and the bread is too dense. Hence, fresh bread it is. I also have found that italian bread is not square , its round so not suitable for these recipes. The attraction is really the pastries. I was overwhelmed with french pastries while in Tokyo (even the hotel had a pastry buffet) as that seems to be the chosen type to consume. The cakes look beautiful but I enjoy the light and flaky croissants. They also offer a delicious pear tart and an apple tart. naturally, they also have red bean stuffed cakes and items as well. They also funny enough have a yakisoba bun sandwich ( i will take photo next time) which is fried noodles on a bun with some veggies. I had one from the Lawsons corner store in Tokyo and it was kind of stupid and was a quick snack. pricing is a bit high but then its quality stuff and is way cheaper than a ticket to shinjuku station BTW...i watched a young japanese couple buy bread, and two tarts, then some food items including pickled radish, then some sushi grade tuna and ended up getting ramen bowls from the take out. i followed along and now have the recipe for my next trip. This is one of my favourite bakeries ever, conveniently located in J-Town. Their cakes are exquisite - it is light, airy/fluffy, fruity, and not overly sweet. I have not yet been disappointed - I am truly a fan of their rare cheesecake, tofu cheesecake, and even some of the fruity mousse cakes. This is the one place I've had those dessert moments of "died and went to heaven". It seems their bread is quite popular as many people buy them and get it sliced on the spot. You can also see what everyone is doing because it's an open concept bakery! Consensus: Splurge on their cakes, or at least try a slice.
