At Bakery Nakamura it is called Azuki Green Tea Cake and a couple quarters less than Shiso's cost($5.00). There are a couple tables for 2 to enjoy on the spot for the various Bakery items such as Cakes, Buns, Sweets. The Azuki Green Tea Cake had moist Green Tea Cake layers with a light Cream and not-overly sweet Azuki bottom. White Chocolate shavings on top with a light powdering of Green Tea. One of the better Cakes I enjoy as a seldom sweet eater. There's always some sort of Bun that is whimsical however it doesn't list the ingredients but then it's in a shape of a TURTLE or a Teddy Bear. The Bakery even during slow hours has constant customers making purchases. There are a few Sandwiches in one corner of the display fridge that screams Japanese style Sandwich but might need to ask for a re-heat for instant consumption. I just had to try the deep fried curry beef bun here since the one at lucullus is delicious, however the one here is nothing compared to it. It's super oily, the yellow grease goes right throw 2 pieces of paper towel. the curry has no curry taste and the bun is mushy. Very disappointed, the buns are over priced, from $2 - 4 for one bun. I have tried 2 cakes, green tea/red bean and tiramisu. I have a sweet tooth and love sweets, but I find this a bit too sweet for me. It was nothing special. read more

Incredibly dishonest place. I got there around 5:30pm-ish today, and picked up a loaf of bread with a price tag of $4.50. I went to pay, and the guy at the cashier said, "it's a day-old bread, is that okay?" I said "it's fine" and I proceeded to pay with a $5 bill. Then the guy said, " actually, it's not a day-old bread and it should be $5.10". So I put down a 10 cent, already not impressed. The guy said," I just put the price tag on, as we are about to close the store and we are preparing for tomorrow." So I told him, "then I should come tomorrow instead of today?" I did not want to make a big fuss over 60 cents, but I think they should have honored whatever the price tag indicated. read more

5 stars for their bread and tofu cheese cake, and 1 star for their service. I enjoy so much of their tofu cheese cake, and I will always come back for it. Their bread is very fresh and tasty but it's just ordinary bread and just like all those asian's grocery store bread. As he was talking, he didn't even make eye contact with me and busy with other thing and talking to other which is fine cuz I can tell that they are busy. I guess he was talking to me but I can't hear him well cuz he kept moving back and forth while talking behind the counter , then he was like " So what do you want?" I was like "okay then I will get the whole loaf with toast thickness" then he kinda gave me this look and make me feel like Im stupid or annoying. We all wearing mask during pandemic and sometimes we just can't hear each other properly. Their other buns range from $1.20 per piece to $4, so it's more expensive, but debatably worth purchasing as well - if you're up for the types of buns they sell! It's a small bakery space within J-Town. They have a good selection of Japanese inspired cakes, pastries, and buns. We came by on a Saturday afternoon and the shelves were looking quite empty already, more than half gone. We picked up a strawberry and mango slice, a black sesame tofu cheesecake slice, and a green tea red bean slice of cake, each $5.80. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and all very efficient. The cakes weren't that sweet and all very light and fluffy. J-town bakery has always been popular, especially it's located very close to me, whenever I crave for dessert or special buns, it's my first to-go choice. Not only it has very creative kawaii buns, it's fillings are quite unique as well. (Strawberry cream, matcha cream, walnut-peach jam, etc) The reason for 3-star is due to down grade of the bun quality. I'd've given it a 2-star, but the cakes are still up to standard, so 3-star is fair. Nowadays, the fillings are half of the portion of what it used to be, (cost control?), the bun skins are thick and not as soft. I've tried it few times, hoping that it's just occasional outlier, but apparently it's the norm now. I'd still go for its cakes and special desserts, but I'd just go to t&t for its green tea pumpkin bun & Oreo cookie cream panda bun (the only two I like) Hope this review helps. read more

After an A-OK lunch at Cafe Green Tea, it was over to Nakamura for some treats! They never disappoint. I really love their rare cheesecake and other baked goods. Besides my one piece of cake allowance, we usually pick up some buns and other delights. Also, if you like light and tasty whole wheat bread, they have one of the best. We usually pick up the whole loaf - and it does not last long enough as our next trip to J-Town. Been here a few times over the years. Located inside the supermarket they have all sorts of buns and cakes. The buns are baked fresh daily, you can tell it's very fresh and they taste good. Tofu cheesecake is something that they have that other bakeries don't. It a little on the pricey side for the amount that you get but I think it worth it. They also have cakes you can order. I hate writing poor reviews but for a bakery that lacks any physical character, and for the most part sells overpriced bread it's hard to give it a better rating that 2.5/5. Although, I'm giving it an extra +0.5 because I did come at the end of the day and missed out on their turtle shaped melon buns ): Souffle Cheesecake (2/5): Ever since we got an Uncle Tetsu downtown I've been itching to try out different Japanese/souffle cheesecakes wherever I can find them. I was quite excited to sample this seeing as this bakery is in the middle of J-town... however I was sadly disappointed at the dry base, and sticky texture of the cake. To be honest, I'd rather wait another 2.5 hours for Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake than eat another slice from this bakery again. knackwurst bun (3.5/5): hot dog buns are my weakness, so I had to try this knackwurst bun that was drizzled with ketchup :) It looked prettier than your average hot dog bun, but it boils down to it... this knackwurst is in essence your average hot dog bun at any other asian bakery. Tofu Cheesecake (4/5): The tofu cheesecake has got to be the one redeeming factor of this bakery. I thought it was something unique as I've never had this before. It's slightly creamier than a souffle cheesecake, it's pretty much a creamier version of tofu that sits on top of a graham cracker base that is topped with whipped cream and some fruits. It's delicious and I'm very happy I got to try it. Would definitely eat it again.. and again till I get fat :3 Cost (2/5): Damn was everything at this bakery expensive. Buns are $2, danishes are $2.20 and each cake slice is $4.25. The bun I tried is nothing special while the cake slices are hit and miss. However, seeing as I can get a whole 6" cake at Uncle Tetsu's for $8.88... you can start to see where the price comparison falls apart. Although MAYBE I'd consider paying $28 for a whole 6" tofu cheesecake... lol, it was really good! Service (3/5): Standard. Not much to say here. Ambiance (1/5): So I thought this would be a standalone bakery, but its in the middle of the J-town supermarket. I love J-town! And this little bakery located inside the grocery store and along with other seafood and sushi places offers cute baked goods that you can't get anywhere in GTA. Ever since I saw the turtle bun on instagram, this place was on my list for a long time. They have this deal if you by 5 buns, you get discount. My favorite was an Anpanman bun filled with custard! It was soft and had a generous amount of cream inside. It was just too cute to eat at first. I will be making the next visit soon to try their cakes! The black sesame tofu cheesecake was unique but weird tasting. I don't know how else to explain it. Everyone who sampled it agreed. The green tea red bean was a good flavor combination but I found the cake a little on the dry side. Looks like a lot of work was put into the cakes and they were very pretty looking, but could have tasted a bit better. Also tried a little green tea mochi cake. It looks like a little cupcake. Be Careful. Dishonest cashier. The power was out and the bakery could only take cash without receipt, when I was at the store. My 4 slices cakes cost $26.20. And I gave two $20 bills to the cashier, a guy who dressed in different uniform from rest of the team there and was giving the team order. He gave me back $3.80. I turn around a bit to be out of the next customer's way, but I knew this was not right. I went back to him and said I gave you two $20 bills...right away he opened the cash case and handed me $15. I said let's use the calculator. Then he took back $5. He never apologized. End of story. Solid bakery that bakes loaf of bread, produces cute looking buns and offers a variety selection of cakes. I tried a fair amount of items from this bakery. First off, I usually get the 7 grain half loaf of bread. You can customize the thickness of the slice and how much you want as in half loaf and full loaf. The bread is fresh and goes bad quickly (which is a good thing since there are not that many preservatives and it was my fault for leaving it out of the fridge). The buns are a hit and miss at times. I enjoy the white chocolate eclairs and also the sausage wasabi buns. The turtle shaped bun wasn't as good as it appeared to be. The bakery is more on the expensive side in terms of price. The buns cost around $2-3 each but I believe that the loaf of bread is definitely worth the price. Love the bread at this place. This is located inside J-town. Although the breads are more expensive than other asian bakeries, it is totally worth it. The breads are so much more dense, so it is more filling. If you buy 6 breads, it becomes tax free. My favourite is the tuna with cheese bread and my mom loves the bacon bread. I also love their danishes which are also really good. Their breads are different from normal asian bakeries. Their breads have french influence so they tend to be harder, like french bread. If you like baguette type breads then this place is for you. I also love their loafs. The skin is chewy and the inside is super soft. You can have half a loaf or the full loaf. You can also ask them to cut it in different sizes like texas (thicker) or toast ( thinner). Their red bean sweet bread is also amazing. I bought the chestnut cake for my birthday last year and it was so good. It wasn't too sweet and there was good amount of chestnut. I also heard their tofu cheesecake is yummy. Their service is just so bad. The people at the casher and inside, they are not nice at all. It's not only the language barrier, but the attitudes. They never return emails. And now they started using plastic bags on every piece of bread while some countries are making a law of abandoning use of plastic bags. I like the bacon twist, which is like a baguette braid with bacon in the middle --- makes for a great savoury snack. Unfortunately, the black sesame custard bun was disappointing, as the bun barely tasted of black sesame and there was just a small bit of, albeit tasty, custard. The curry beef doughnut is filled with yummy Japanese curry, with potato and carrots, but is regrettably greasy. Great concept, but perhaps it would be better if they fried it from frozen? They also have pre-made sandwiches, including - Pork cutlet with shredded cabbage on toasted white bread (delicious!) - Chicken cutlet with seasoned mayo and lettuce (also on toasted white bread, also very tasty!) - Chicken karaage on brioche, topped with a halved soya egg (love this one!) - Haven't tried the beef croquette on brioche or the noodle bun. My DC really enjoys the pastries, but I found the croissant and danishes to be okay (a step above grocery store; I prefer the more buttery traditional French style.) I got the Rare cheesecake and my partner got the Green Tea soy cheesecake. I loved mine, it had different layers and textures, the bottom a thin biscuit crust, topped by light fluffy cheesecake, and the next layer had a light hint of lemon, and then lighter cheesecake on top. The green tea cheesecake was more of a mousse texture and we don't enjoy mousse. We also picked up a few buns to try out. I bought a half loaf of bread that is cut to exacting measurements based on the chart as I wanted the right bread for a french toast brulee. They make a fresh bread on the premises. It was perfect for toasting as well as the french toast recipe. In the past, using wonderbread was not suitable because I find the crust is not crisp enough and the bread is too dense. Hence, fresh bread it is. I also have found that italian bread is not square , its round so not suitable for these recipes. The attraction is really the pastries. I was overwhelmed with french pastries while in Tokyo (even the hotel had a pastry buffet) as that seems to be the chosen type to consume. The cakes look beautiful but I enjoy the light and flaky croissants. They also offer a delicious pear tart and an apple tart. naturally, they also have red bean stuffed cakes and items as well. They also funny enough have a yakisoba bun sandwich ( i will take photo next time) which is fried noodles on a bun with some veggies. I had one from the Lawsons corner store in Tokyo and it was kind of stupid and was a quick snack. pricing is a bit high but then its quality stuff and is way cheaper than a ticket to shinjuku station BTW...i watched a young japanese couple buy bread, and two tarts, then some food items including pickled radish, then some sushi grade tuna and ended up getting ramen bowls from the take out. i followed along and now have the recipe for my next trip. I think it is known for its cute bakery products. A tofu cheesecake was ordered from here for my birthday. It was very interesting, lighter and creamier than usual cheesecake and had slight hints of tofu! Toppings wise I wished there would be a bit more fruits than just a few strawberries and blueberries since the base was already simple. I also got the melon turtle which was kind of dissapointing. You have to buy 6 pieces inside the fridge before you get the HST exemption, any other pastries not inside the fridge do not count. I hope they are remitting all the HST collected to the government.
