I would pick up some Asian buns from here whenever I'm nearby. It's a popular spot known for their traditional Hong Kong-style buns and pastries. Great for a snack and breakfast for upcoming days. Note, if you come at the end of the day, there will be slim pickings. Beyond the classic buns, they also have hot microwaveable meals, pre-packaged bubble teas, and some unique varieties like Chinese sausage steam buns, imitation crab meat musubi-like buns, and more. On the most recent visit, I picked up sticky rice in Lotus leaf for about $5. It was pricy, given it's usually cheaper, but it's huge and fed both of us for lunch. Making it so worth it for $2.5/pp for lunch and you can add a side of veggies from home to make it a complete meal! What a deal.

It's always a pleasure to grab some refreshments with friends/coworkers after a long day so we stopped in at Lucullus Bakery in Downtown Markham. It was a nice looking place and busier than I expected. They had lots of displays but their selection was quite depleted. Most of the trays/displays were empty but we managed to get a few items - Deep Fried Curry Beef Bun, BBQ Pork bun, and an Egg Tart. Some tea completed our light meal. These snacks hit all the right spots. It was also a nice relaxing environment to unwind.

So I think 3.5 star aggregate is appropriate for Lucullus. I've seen the price rise steadliy over the years. It was always expensive back then in the 90's and it's even more expensive now. The quality of their baked goods and milk tea is very good I can't even lie. So if I were to make this review just based off quality, then it would be a 4 star review. However, I feel obligated to factor in price and value and that's where I believe they deserve a 3 star rating. As far as bakery BBQ pork buns go, I haven't had a better one elsewhere. The best bbq pork buns are obviously the ones you get at restaurants or the ones you make at home. Lucullus has the audacity to charge almost $3 for one bbq pork bun which is absolutely blasphemous. The egg tarts are also really really good and used to be the value-buy for customers. Even THOSE have gone up to a pretty ridiculous price. They use the proper, flaky crust rather than the butter cracker crust. The milk tea is also like $5-6 iirc. It's super rich and surprisingly good (I wasn't expecting much when I ordered it) but for that price I can go to an actual bbt shop and get a larger size. They must have a really loyal customer base though, because they've been around for forever while the stuff in that plaza keeps changing and my mom still goes to buy egg tarts from them if it's convenient for her. TL;DR the pastries and buns are good, the prices are stupid 3.5/5 stars

Mind the squishy presentation. But delicious BBQ and macha buns!

We were on our way back from a walk in this gorgeous weather, when we decided to make a quick put stop for some delicious buns. Yoy can tell a place is popular when the line up is consistently out the door and there is a large temperature device when you first walk in. There is a Marshall (sweet older lady) at the door whom co tells the crowd. Regardless There is a tight space so make sure to be masked when you go in. I've been here a bunch of times before and first time review. The bands are always fresh, with sweet flavourful dough and plenty of variety. Today U split a macha tea and BBQ bun (didn't make the bike *pardon the pic as they both a bit squished in the bike ride home). Both were 5 bucks with tax total. Not a low carb option, of course but really good for treat! There are a few other bun /bakeries in the plaza, but this place is top notch for a "nosh!' -Zuk

I've been coming here since I was a kid. The pineapple bun is really good especially when it comes out fresh and warm. The egg tart is not too heavy on the crust. I prefer the butter crust over flakey crust but both is just as good. My family loves coming here to order birthday cake , we get the fruit cake as it's not too sweet. This HK style bakery has been around along time and they've managed to open multiple locations now. The service can be crappy sometimes but their buns are too good to boycott. I gotta say this is my favourite bakery in the city.

Quite a well known Chinese bakery I would say. Overall, their prices are a little higher than their competitors but quality does shine through in order to justify the premium you pay. They also offer a "no tax deal" if you purchase 6+ items (but so do other places). I typically like to come here for their sausage buns and egg tarts (I love the flakey ones, my family loves the cookie crust - good thing they have both and both are delicious!) Their meatloaf on rice and HK milk tea is quite good as well. Today, my dad went in to pick up some special items, including a Napoleon cake that was new to us. It got a little shaken up by the time it got home, but this cake did surprise me. It was so yummy! Not too sweet (that's a big thing for me) and the texture from all the layers was very nice. Overall, a fresh tasting cake. My only concern is that now with COVID-19, they haven't changed too much in terms of procedures (i.e. everyone still uses the trays and tongs to grab their own goods). But their food remains covered and customers and workers tend to wear masks and such, so to each their own about whether they think it's a risk.

    YUM! 10/10

Pros: - Excellent Pineapple Buns (Bo Lo Baos), and both Cantonese and flakey Egg Tarts. - Delicious Lemon Tea Cons: - The Sponge Cakes were a little dry so I don't recommend those. Tip: Cash or debit card only I noticed that a lot of locals were ordering their meat rice lunch boxes which looked really good, gotta try when I return!

Sticky Rice, Pineapple bun filled with custard, and coconut.
    Amabel S.

My first time came to this bakery. And it says in the door 8 people max, but the bakery is packed with people approximately 12-15 customers. No social distancing at all. We love the Pineapple bun filled with custard. Lots of filling, not too sweet, just perfect. However, the pineapple bun filled with coconut is a bit crunchy. You really can taste the coconut. This is a matter of preference. You can like it too! We also get the Sticky Rice. So Yummy! Huge for $4.95. Lots of meat in it. The buns are already in a plastic bag, and when you pay, the staff will sealed it. Sadly they ran out of egg tarts, maybe they a new batch after I left. I wish they are more organized and limit the customers inside the bakery due to Covid. Follow @astravel_eats on instagram

The egg tart was alright and the crust wasn't as buttery as I thought it would be. The filling was pretty standard, nothing to write home about.

Their pineapple buns are amazing!! I wanted to get some of their frozen rice boxes but they didn't have much when I went. Will definitely be back next time!

Taro bun and HK iced milk tea

4.5 Lucullus is a really authentic Hong Kong style cafe based on my experiences travelling to Hong Kong. They have a really great selection of baked goods baked fresh daily and open early (8AM on weekends as well). Upon entering the store you are immediately greeted by the friendly staff who work there. Visiting on a Sunday morning I thought it would be less packed - but the store was still crowded. Nonetheless the service, and product selection was, was great. I decided on a crispy taro bun and HK style iced milk tea. The taro bun was fresh and soft on the inside with a perfectly flaky top. They also have a great selection of other desserts and salty pastries including garlic, coconut, cream and more. The HK milk tea was amazing. So icy and fresh. Lucullus is a solid spot for breakfast or snack!

Last Saturday, I was in my car, parked steps away from Zoup! I had placed a dinner order. I looked across the plaza and noticed Paris Baguette (PB). I had visited COBS Bread a couple of hours earlier. Did I need another bakery visit? Yes! I had some time to kill before picking up my dinner. It was raining. I drove over to PB and parked relatively close to the store. I walked in. I felt like I was in heaven. Carb heaven. Where should I start? I got a tray. There were instructions to grab a small piece of paper and lay it on the tray. I got tongs and went to work. I saw palmiers. My mom loves them. I grabbed one with my tongs and broke off a curved section. It was probably a first for me. I ate the broken part and placed the imperfect palmier on my tray. The broken piece was yummy and was perfection. I finally understood why my mom loves palmiers. I hit the croissant section. I got a pain au chocolat, which is probably my favourite type of croissant. I also got a chocolate croissant. A nice, older woman started chatting with me. She was so sweet. She let me know that she frequents this bakery often and loves it. I asked her what items she hasn't had. It was two items, which floored me. She noticed the chausson aux pommes that I had on my tray and said that it was yummy. I got the following items: - Chausson aux pommes - Chocolate croissant - Pineapple brûlée pastry - Palmier - Pastel de nata - Pain au chocolat - Curry croquette The nice woman let me know that Mia, who was the staffer behind the counter, let her know that this bakery has Korean owners. Really? It made sense seeing mochi donuts. We both hit the checkout counter. Mia got her order and said to grab a seat. She'd bring everything to her. This nice woman said that she was shy of being 90 years old. What?! She looked great! I wouldn't have guessed that I was talking to an 89-year-old woman during my entire time here. I hope that when I am her age, I am savouring pastry as often as my new friend. Mia was great. She put all my pastries in a box. She singled out my savoury curry croquette in a paper bag. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was good. I got my receipt, thanked her, grabbed my goodies, wished my new friend a wonderful day, and left. There was a Wild game that night. I had a pastry each period. Three pastries in three hours. They were delicious! I will say that the ones with fresh fruit were the most expensive, just over $6. They were worth it. The chausson aux pommes had the best apple filling. It was flaky and delicious. I absolutely devoured the pineapple brûlée pastry. The pineapple chunks were set in custard and were so naturally sweet. This pastry was superb. The pain au chocolat continues to be my favourite croissant. It was flaky and had the best chocolate in every bite. So good! I had the chocolate croissant and loved it. It was fresh, flaky, and soft. The chocolate drizzle had the right amount of chocolate with the buttery croissant. I was extremely happy with my pastel de nata. The custard had a hint of sweetness. The base of flaky. It could have been torched on top more, but I'd get half a dozen next time. I didn't know what to expect with the curry croquette. It was delicious. It had a crispy exterior, crusted with a mix of white and black sesame seeds. The curry filling was full of good flavour. It had veggies in it. The corn and carrot combination worked nicely. I raved about this place to my friend at work today. There's one at Heartland in Mississauga, which is perfect for us to do a run after work. I had an excellent experience. It was nice meeting a passionate pastry lover while getting her take on what she loves. Everything that I consumed was excellent. I hope to get a drink next time and perhaps sit down to enjoy it. I'll be back. (117)
