I have seen an article about this place (introducing it as an award winning bakery) a few years ago. It is a Hong Kong style bakery, offering a variety of buns (both savory and sweet) and tarts at affordable price. Stepping in, it was more like cafe offering variety of drinks than regular HK style bakery. Bright and clean. Looking closely at each product, the quality seemed to be better than other counterparts- each looked fluffier, less greasy, and a bit more sophisticated in presentation. I got - BLB (Bo Lo Bao): Crunchy cookie crust on soft bun. - Crispy cream: Crispy sweet topping on soft bao - Chestnut Bao - Sugar donut - Egg tart Buns are very pillowy. The taste was "milk forward", no detectable butter flavor, which makes their aftertaste light & healthy. I found that the texture is a bit drier than I preferred. We liked Chestnut Bao. Chestnut paste matched the milky sweet bun. Overall, affordable, a lot of options and comforting. Next time I want to try savory types of buns!!! Oh each buns are individually bagged and sealed. If you want really good fresh baked goods and buns, come here. They are a local chain in the area and all locations are equally good. Their egg tarts are excellent, along with their milk tea. However, I need to call out their frozen rice dishes. It's like a mini clay pot rice place, with chinese sausage and a salty egg. There are other variations as well. If you go to the food court in the mall, they have them already steamed hot and ready to eat! Pricing is reasonable. Beyond the classic buns, they also have hot microwaveable meals, pre-packaged bubble teas, and some unique varieties like Chinese sausage steam buns, imitation crab meat musubi-like buns, and more. On the most recent visit, I picked up sticky rice in Lotus leaf for about $5. It was pricy, given it's usually cheaper, but it's huge and fed both of us for lunch. It's always a pleasure to grab some refreshments with friends/coworkers after a long day so we stopped in at Lucullus Bakery in Downtown Markham. It was a nice looking place and busier than I expected. They had lots of displays but their selection was quite depleted. Most of the trays/displays were empty but we managed to get a few items - Deep Fried Curry Beef Bun, BBQ Pork bun, and an Egg Tart. Some tea completed our light meal. So I think 3.5 star aggregate is appropriate for Lucullus. I've seen the price rise steadliy over the years. It was always expensive back then in the 90's and it's even more expensive now. The quality of their baked goods and milk tea is very good I can't even lie. So if I were to make this review just based off quality, then it would be a 4 star review. However, I feel obligated to factor in price and value and that's where I believe they deserve a 3 star rating. As far as bakery BBQ pork buns go, I haven't had a better one elsewhere. The best bbq pork buns are obviously the ones you get at restaurants or the ones you make at home. Lucullus has the audacity to charge almost $3 for one bbq pork bun which is absolutely blasphemous. The egg tarts are also really really good and used to be the value-buy for customers. Even THOSE have gone up to a pretty ridiculous price. They use the proper, flaky crust rather than the butter cracker crust. The milk tea is also like $5-6 iirc. It's super rich and surprisingly good (I wasn't expecting much when I ordered it) but for that price I can go to an actual bbt shop and get a larger size. They must have a really loyal customer base though, because they've been around for forever while the stuff in that plaza keeps changing and my mom still goes to buy egg tarts from them if it's convenient for her. We were on our way back from a walk in this gorgeous weather, when we decided to make a quick put stop for some delicious buns. Yoy can tell a place is popular when the line up is consistently out the door and there is a large temperature device when you first walk in. There is a Marshall (sweet older lady) at the door whom co tells the crowd. Regardless There is a tight space so make sure to be masked when you go in. I've been here a bunch of times before and first time review. The bands are always fresh, with sweet flavourful dough and plenty of variety. I had to go to this bakery for egg tarts because Soho nearby sold out and I had an inkling for egg tarts! Place feels a little run-down but that because the place simply needs a revamp and a new coat of paint. I was shocked by how much they were charging now for an egg tarts! Close to $2 (with tax). I was also appalled at their lock of Covid procedures as one of their employee came back inside and grabbed a pastry with his bare hand and put it in his mouth??!?? I guess he didn't care or forgot that Covid still exists! Because of that, I will try to avoid this place and go elsewhere. No way an egg tart should cost that much and also they weren't even big as they have shrunk in size. Quite a well known Chinese bakery I would say. Overall, their prices are a little higher than their competitors but quality does shine through in order to justify the premium you pay. They also offer a "no tax deal" if you purchase 6+ items (but so do other places). I typically like to come here for their sausage buns and egg tarts (I love the flakey ones, my family loves the cookie crust - good thing they have both and both are delicious!) Their meatloaf on rice and HK milk tea is quite good as well. Today, my dad went in to pick up some special items, including a Napoleon cake that was new to us. It got a little shaken up by the time it got home, but this cake did surprise me. It was so yummy! Not too sweet (that's a big thing for me) and the texture from all the layers was very nice. Overall, a fresh tasting cake. My only concern is that now with COVID-19, they haven't changed too much in terms of procedures (i.e. everyone still uses the trays and tongs to grab their own goods). They have a really great selection of baked goods baked fresh daily and open early (8AM on weekends as well). Upon entering the store you are immediately greeted by the friendly staff who work there. Visiting on a Sunday morning I thought it would be less packed - but the store was still crowded. Nonetheless the service, and product selection was, was great. I decided on a crispy taro bun and HK style iced milk tea. The taro bun was fresh and soft on the inside with a perfectly flaky top. I really enjoy Lucullus' products in general, however, at this specific location yesterday some of the staff were demeaning and verbally abusive. The cashier (A) made a mistake in charging the wrong size for the drink, and came to yell at and harass me while I was picking up my drink. I stated that I ordered a large, she insisted on yelling that she charged for a smaller size although I never disputed that she charged the wrong amount, I merely repeated my order. She kept yelling saying I owed $1.40, so I gave $1.50. She went to reprint the receipt to prove her mistake. I never said I wouldn't pay, but the staff treated me as if I were trying to run out without paying. When my friend came back shortly afterwards on her own for a separate matter, the cashiers asked if I had paid the $1.50. I expect respectful and courteous treatment from staff, I'm not interested in paying to be berated and verbally abused for staff mistakes. I will never be returning to this location again. read more

With that said, it is now surprisingly high tech with a digital temperature detector at the the front of the store for patrons to gauge their temperatures. I was impressed by the set up and number of options available as compared to other bakeries near by. Many have scaled down their options due to COVID. Location: major intersection close to Leslie & highway 7 in the HSBC plaza Parking: can get really busy! hard to find parking. If there's really none you can go across to the other plaza and park. There's a lot of space over there. It's also apparently a one way lot so make sure you continue driving forward around the loop to head back out. Decor: Small and cute, its not as nice as their location at downtown Markham (Highway7 & Birchmount) area. It can get really cramped at it's peak time. Food: The pastries are just okay in my opinion. I tried a bit of everything, they also have cute Japanese cheesecakes (The fluffy kind) but they don't taste as good as they look. The actual cakes are pretty yummy and the tarts are my favourite. The buns are all so so and the puff pastries could be better. They put out freshly baked egg tarts for customers to take right on the counter from time to time. But they are all pre steamed so you can get your food in 3 minutes after you order! Talk about speedy services! The minced meat I ordered was quite ok. Reminded me of something that my mother used to make.. (yes she is not a really good cook and she always overcooks my meals) The HK style tea are all premade in a warmer... I have to give it a -0.5 star because it is really strong and bitter and she did not put in enough cornation milk. Usually I prefer places that don't make them all in the morning... imagine how their tea will taste like in the evening. Although I just had lunch and was here to pick up a cake that we ordered a few days ago, I was very tempted to buy some pastries to go. Fortunately I have strong willpower. Being the original Lucullus, I do prefer coming here over the modern cafe western style one at Downtown Markham. Their bread is so fresh and I feel like it's more authentic here and softer in texture. That being said, as an old regular, I give it 4 stars for taste, especially when it is fresh out of the oven and still warm to touch. The only downfall really is that the price for their buns have gone up so much. A pineapple bun for $1.95 is a little too steep in my opinion, but it also surprised me that their other specialty buns (I.e. black sesame / purple sweet potato buns) were cheaper than the polo bun! Perhaps it's because they're known for them, and I do think their polo buns are the best in the city, but price is still a bit too much. Service 3/5 I usually have no real issue here. Pretty standard Hong Kong style service. If you are here expecting all smiles and friendly greetings. It isn't really like that all the time here. After you've gotten everything, you pay at the front, where you can also order drinks or dishes. I ordered a mango cheese lava tart, and it was INCREDIBLE. The filling was delicious and it had a perfectly creamy consistency. This was my first time eating this type of tart, and the mango flavour was surprisingly present. This Asian lady in her 40s, short, with glasses handed me what I thought would be an extremely difficult order to mess up, I had a sip, and it was plain burnt coffee. I went back to tell her that it wasn't what I ordered and she yelled at me insisting that's how the drink tasted. So either I've had the drink made incorrectly for me ALL this time or she went out of her way to make me look like an idiot after giving me the wrong drink. Even if she was correct, that's simply not how you treat customers and do customer service. Needless to say, I don't see myself going back here anymore. 2019-04-21. Lucullus Bakery. Located in the same plaza as Shanghai Dim Sum, Lucullus Baker is a small bakery shop with primarily a take out business. There is a small seating section by the storefront windows; 3 tables and a counter with total seating for about 12. Our first time here, we stopped in just to check it out. What I found was a small selection of buns at premium prices. Most buns were $1,75 and it only went up from there. The buns were nothing special and can be purchased at your local Chinese supermarket cheaper. Two things did catch my eye though, their "Sticky Ball" and their Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf. The sticky rice in lotus leaf is typically a dim sum item and not one you find in a bakery. While the restaurants usually serve 2-3 smaller potions in a order, Lucullus' version is a larger serving. Fitting considering dim sum is meant as small plates, and Lucullus' version is intended more as a meal. Sticky Ball. This came in two flavours; Walnut and Black Sesame, and Mango. We picked up one of each. The were both quite good overall, lots of rice sandwiches the filling, but surprisingly, the flavours permeated through. I enjoyed the Walnut and Black Sesame more of the two, and am a fan of the dish. 4 stars. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf. Like the Sticky Ball, this was rice dominant; however the savory filling didn't come through for me. Dim Sum versions have a much better ratio of rice to filling. 2 stars. Overall, Lucullus Bakery is all about location. The prices are high, but they're pretty much one of the few players in the area for Chinese buns. While I think their Sticky Balls are winners, it's not enough for me to make a trip for them. 3 stars less 1/2 a point for its prices, 2,5 stars overall. So while I find the bakery itself quite normal and slightly overpriced for Chinese bakery goods, we ducked in here during a hail storm and was pleasantly surprised at the nice atmosphere and hot menu items. Getting a hot rice meal set with a hot drink for under $7 is a steal in this area.... and so I had the minced beef sauce on rice with a fried egg and a HK milk tea and it felt great....since the Chatime next to it would've been $7 for a milk tea alone (but I still do like Chatime... Warning: Parking lot is kinda tight. Lotsa in/out traffic at this place! This place was solid during my visit around 6:30pm. Contrary to another reviewer, the only "hot and fresh" item that was being replenished were the BLB! Everything else was remnants from earlier on in the day. Still not bad. No egg tarts tho which I found kinda strange. What stands out about this bakery is that they have a small fridge of homemade drinks (e.g. cane sugar base with various things inside, mung bean stuff, they are sugary tho) AND take away rice dishes. There are also a coupla small tables, but they are placed in such a way that whispers, "Pssst, this place is primarily a takeout". I got a hotdog bun (bun wasn't too sugary and it was fluffy tho cold) + sticky rice in a lotus leaf ($3), but weren't bad at all. I also got a HK milk tea and it was pretty strong tea-wise, but not as fragrant. Still ok tho. I liked the design on the cup. So this place is supposed to be the best HK bakery in all of the GTA. And this location is the OG location. So why the 3 stars?? Came here for breakfast an hour ago. Tried the curry beef bun, bbq pork bun, tuna bun & the pineapple custard bun. The only one that is a 5 out of 5 for me is the curry beef bun. I would say it is the best I've had in the GTA. The others are ok. Tuna bun was my least fave. And the pineapple bun was disappointing. It didn't have too much crackle at the top & it was just ok. I will definitely pick up the curry beef bun if I am in the area again but I honestly don't see the hype. I have had better bbq pork, tuna & pineapple buns elsewhere. read more
