    Mango pancake
    Kevin E.

Was so excited when we came here and I managed to snag their last mango pancake! Love the idea of a portable mango cake wrapped in a soft and pillowy pancake so you can enjoy it on the go. Very friendly service!

The tiger skin pattern on my swiss roll is divine!

Last Tuesday, I was at First Markham Place to pick up some takeout for dinner at Bingz Crispy Burger. I was parked practically in front of Patisserie Gateau, a few doors down from Bingz. After I had fetched my takeout, I headed over here to check out the bakery. The downside to coming to a bakery at 6 pm is that many bun options were gone. Any buns with protein filling, such as barbequed pork or tuna, were gone. However, there were baked goods with pork floss, so it wasn't horrible. This bakery is set up as you'd expect when you're in a Chinese bakery. You grab a tray and tongs, and then grab baked goods that you'd like. You then bring your tray of goodies up to the checkout area to pay. There were also bacon and egg buns. They were rather large sandwiches. The buns had a ton of sesame seeds. You can also get cakes and egg tarts. Both are in the display case, along with the swiss rolls. The cakes looked impressive. I got a few items. If you get six items, you don't pay any tax. I got the following items: - Pork floss roll with green onions (2) - Coconut-filled buns (2) - Tiger skin pattern swiss roll - Coconut spiral roll I had a nice woman help me with my order. I paid with a debit card. It was a smooth transaction. She spoke Cantonese. I still don't know how to say debit in Cantonese, so my conversation had some English in it. I thanked her. She reciprocated. I grabbed my bag of baked goods and headed to my car. I had the tiger pattern swiss roll for dessert. OMG! It was the best swiss roll that I have had in a long time. The cake was light and spongy. The cream had a freshness and delicateness that I can't describe. It was so good. And, the tiger skin pattern was cool. I would get a full roll next time. It was excellent! The pork floss roll with green onions was yummy. I gambled and got two. I loved both rolls. Each one had a nice balance of pork floss and green onions. Add sesame seeds to this mix with the dough and it was pure joy eating it. The coconut-filled buns were amazing. This place makes the filling into almost a paste. You can feel the fine coconut bits when you are eating it, but it melts in your mouth. It was also not that bright yellow colour that most bakeries have. The filling was more a pale beige. It wasn't all that sweet. The bun part was yummy and perfect. The coconut spiral roll was enjoyable to eat. It looked like a tart, except a spiral formed its tart-like shape, with a light coconut filling between the spirals and some coconut flakes on top. If you enjoy coconut, give this roll a try. I loved it. It was different and yummy. I will definitely return for more. I'll need to drop by earlier and see if I can get some protein-filled buns. (169)

4.5 STARS Celebrated my fathers birthday over the weekend, and my older brother got him a mango cake from Patisserie Gateau. The cake was made beautifully, and it tasted wonderful. Our parents aren't fond of sweets/cakes, but both my parents had a slice as it wasn't overly sweet, and the cake was super soft and light. The cream was luscious with the right amount of sweetness, and the mangos were super juicy and perfectly ripe. Will definitely come back just for the mango cake for future birthdays.

I had to purchase a cake for my dad's birthday. The bakery that I would normally purchase many of our family favourite cakes is closed on Tuesdays. I recall that my parents had mentioned something about a delicious mango cake that they were gifted by a good friend of theirs that came from First Markham Place. I figured that this must be the same bakery, so I went to check it out. Despite all the years of visiting FMP, I have never stepped foot in this bakery interestingly enough. It's a small space, but they offer a lot of choices in terms of buns, pastries, and cakes. They sell crispy egg tarts by the box only. They also have some special buns, including crispy fish buns, or egg and tomato buns. The staff was initially a little curt with me, but softened as I inquired about the mango cakes. There are two options for mango cake, one of which is less mango filled, and the other, which has a bit more cream filling (called mango lava cake). I opted for the cake with more mango. They asked if I would like anything written on the cake. I requested for them to add a plaque that said "Happy birthday Dad", to which they obliged. The cake that I selected cost $46. This place takes credit cards as well as cash. Parking can get a little bit crowded in this shopping centre but thankfully I lucked out coming just after work. I have been to the bakery a couple of times now, and I can't say that the staff brusqueness has improved, but the quality of the mango cake has me returning for more.

Best mango cake ever! Not too sweet. Mangoes tastes so fresh. We cut it up to 46 pieces so serve a whole gang of people in an event. Everyone loves it.

I'm not sure if I'm happy or not happy discovering this bakery. I've been trying to be health causcious since the pandemic so discovering this place may be a bit worrying because after trying a few items, I was craving for more! Based on other Yelp reviews, it's been around at least 10 years and I've passed by many times but the store front never attracted me to go in. But after reading the Yelp reviews, I realize the I might actually be missing out. I can tell you this place is by far one of the best chinese bakery! Everything we got was really good but I really have to compliment their pork floss green onion roll. It tasted just as good as the ones that I had in Hong Kong. Be sure to pick up one if you've never tried it before.

    Mango lava cake
    Cynthia Y.

We had the lava mango cake. Quality is good, cake is light and just right amount of sweetness, 4 stars for the cake. One star deducted because the menu says this is gold leaf mango lava cake, there is no gold leaf on the cake. Another star deducted overall as the staff do not know the price of their products and argue in front of customers. When I ordered the cake, staff argued amongst themselves whether the cake is 33$ or 53$. When I picked up the cake, I was charged 33$ and another staff requested that I pay 43$. What a service chaos

Bought a last minute cake for my 2 year old daughter. We chose a mango cake because it's seriously what we usually buy for everyone's birthdays (every year, yes, EVERY YEAR). I didn't have to wait in line this time because I went during the afternoon while everyone was still in school/work/working from home. They always ask you if you want to write something on a chocolate piece and if you need a candle. The staff are always really nice to you and friendly. I would've given them a 5 star, but this time they lost 2 stars because when I ate some of the cake, I had to spit out a sticker piece of the mango that they forgot to take out. It's like eating a piece of egg shell in your scrambled eggs. Seriously a turn off! That's one of my pet peeves in restaurants/catering businesses. Especially for a higher priced, supposedly higher end, cake. Overall the cake is always fluffy and the fruits on top are alright. They differ depending on season or the day I believe.

Mango cake here is the best. This is a busy patisserie, so better to order the cake in advance.

    Fresh Mango Cake
    Alice L.

Love their fresh mango cake. It is one of the best I ever have. This is the first time I bought it. I had it a few times before at various parties. I am very satisfied with the cake. Very soft and moist and lots of mangoes. Taste very yummy. Will buy it again next time.

    Gold Leaf Mango Lava Cake
    Matthew H.

I'll have to give the credit to this to my friends - as they surprised me with a cake from this spot! The gold leaf mango lava cake was super light, with tons of fruit both on the surface and mango layers inside. The cream is prominent, but not to the point of being super filling. I had enough for a couple days (my friends kind of over-ordered) and it was still just as good afterward. Make sure to order in advance!

Egg tart.... this is how I bought it
    Vivian C.

COVID review I wasn't going to post a review because it's "just another Chinese bakery". How much can you write about buns. But after trying 2 of the 6 items I bought, I felt compelled to write. I bought a plain pineapple bun, matcha croissant, custard bun, curry beef bun, red bean pineapple bun, and flaky crust egg tart. Matcha croissant, what's the green stuff inside?! It's green but has no flavour. It was like cornstarch paste with green food colouring. The croissant part, it looked amazing, nice and flaky, but there was no butter taste. I wonder if they used lard, or shortening in place of butter. Egg tart, they were boxed 4 in a box and closed so you can't see the product. If I saw it I wouldn't have bought it. When I opened the box, the egg tarts were small size, just a tad larger than dimsum size. The flaky crust was over cooked so it was dark brown. And obviously the egg was over cooked as well the top was all wrinkly. My husband thought I bought 4 portugese egg tarts...... I'm not sure why this place is so busy. I lined up outside to go in since the sign said 4 people Max inside. BUT while I was in there, no one working there enforced the Max capacity. There was 8 people in there. It's a small bakery. It became VERY crowded, uncomfortable crowded. You are better off staying away.

    Red bean green tea cake
    Sophie T.

I'm a little conflicted how to rate this place. They have potential to be a great bakery, but it seems they couldn't quite carry thru. Look at this cake we bought, they did a decent job with the fruit decorations, but then you see that half effort jelly glossing job on the cake. End product looks like they gave up at the end, threw some red beans on top and spot glazed the cake. Anyway, the cake itself tasted ok. The frosting has a very strong tea flavor. I would suggest to put a little bit more effort on the finishing touch of a cake, since these days, it's all about the photos.
