This was the last stop I made prior to departing from IAD. The food order must be placed at the counter and paid beforehand. You can eat-in or order it as to-go. There's no online ordering available so one must place the order in-person or by phone. The food itself was delicious but I wish it wasn't so tepid in temperature. The squid bibimbap was filling as it contained my favorite type of bean sprouts kimchi. The soup was also delicious but I just wish it was piping hot. Wow! What an awesome experience having lunch here today. I've never heard of this restaurant until a friend of mine suggested it. I have to say it was very quick easy seemed very friendly. I ordered the Bulgogi lunch and it came with delicious fresh sides. Think of it as like a mall food court version of Korean barbecue. I guess that is some simplest way. I could describe it not all you can eat all. I understand that they may give you more sizes. If you ask, I did not ask because I was plenty full from my order I like that they provided some hot tea water. Baek Ban opened semi-recently and replaced the former Chinese tapas restaurant Lee Hwa. I never visited Lee Hwa, but I was glad that I visited Baek Ban! I stopped by Baek Ban for dinner and tried the bulgogi and the spicy pork. There are big portions here and you get a lot of side dishes, including a pack of seaweed! This spot is legit! At least it feels legit and authentic compared to most other Korean food places in the area. The store is tucked away in shopping center off Metrotech but a hidden gem that has so much on the menu you will find something for everyone. We went with the Soicy Galbi and Grilled Mackarel. Not only is Baek Ban the name of the restaurant, but it's also a style of Korean cuisine. Baek Ban (white + rice) is basically middle-of-the-road, traditional, home-style comfort foods. It's not fancy like han-jung-sik*, and not dirt cheap/fast-food like boon-sik**. Baek-ban is quite simply a bowl of rice and soup, and a bunch of ban-chan (rice + side) or side dishes. When you go to a Korean restaurant, side dishes naturally come with your meal; however, the focus is usually on the entree you ordered. With baek-ban, the ban-chan is quintessentially an integral part of your dining experience rather than just some side dishes. Enough of what it is! How was the food? We ordered the grilled mackerel and ginseng chicken soup. Mackerel is one of my favorite fish and it was delicious, though I must say I was surprised that it was not too salty, a common complaint I have with this fish at other places. The ginseng chicken soup was good too. It's not a dish you can easily find at Korean restaurants around here. I found this place through social media and what attracted me to this place was how everything was plated aesthetically! Honestly, I was expecting to be blown away after seeing this place covered in the Washingtonian, but I was a little let down. Been here 3 times now but never going back... got the dumpling soup. Dumplings were sour and rotten. I could tell from the smell but husband already had tried a bite. Went to the front to let the lady know and she offered a remake of the same thing which we declined because the dumplings were so bad. Told us we could get something else then told us we had to pay the difference for whatever even though it was $1 more and we had already paid for the soup and rice which was an extra $2. After going back and forth with her for a while I just gave up and asked for a refund. To that she also tried to argue with me about the full refund which included the $2 rice or not. Still looking for a replacement for our long-time favorite Korean restaurant that recently closed, we decided to check out Baek Ban. The aromas when we entered made us happy we did. Baek Ban is an kind of quick serve where you order from a very large and colorful menu and then sit at a table until your buzzer goes off. When it does, you will be rewarded with a big tray full of little dishes of banchan and a steaming hot big bowl of something yummy. We chose the spicy beef short ribs (my favorite), the bulgogi bibimbap, the squid bibimbap and the dumplings. As mentioned, each comes with several small dishes of banchan which you can ask to be refilled. We never got that far because we ordered so much to start that we were really full! Everything was fresh steaming hot and really tasty. The only disappointment were the dumplings which were big and plump but no matter how skilled we were with our utensils, they fell apart super easily and were a little bland. The location is easy to find in a center that is featuring more and more great places to eat. The space is straightforward but there is plenty of seating and plenty of parking. I wish there was a way to fill up a bottle of water to bring to the table because the cups are small and you have to keep getting up to go back for refills. I loved the open layout of the restaurant when I first walked in; there's even a room on the side that you can reserve for parties.
