Ok, this is my favorite place for donkatsu curry! I have been here enough times and it has not disappointed us. Again on this last visit, the tonkatsu was delicious. The pork cutlet was not dry or tough. The panko or outer portion was cooked extremely well, where it was a golden brown and crunchy. The staff continues to be super friendly and accommodating. Even when they are busy they are good at checking on you to ensure you have a delightful meal. Also, since it is Spring time, they again have outdoor seating available. read more

Kare Bar is an eclectic Japanese fusion restaurant in Chantilly, VA, known for it's cozy vibe and unique menu. There's plenty of free parking in the lot in the complex near the restaurant. You can make reservations if you'd like, but the place was relatively empty when we went. There's not much seating inside, so I wouldn't recommend going in a group larger than 4 people. The service was okay, it took a while for the dishes to come out and for us to get water. We also let the waiter know that we have a vegetarian in the group and he let us know he was pescatarian and gave us his recommendations. We ordered the miso mushroom udon pasta, which came with fish flakes on top. We asked for it to be re-made without fish flakes and he apologized. In terms of the food overall, the portions were small for the price. The tofu curry came with 4 pieces of fried tofu and a small portion of rice and curry. It was also kinda bland, but was fixed with sauces on the side. There was a good amount of vegetables in the curry though. The pork tonkatsu appetizer and cucumber salad did taste flavorful and were crispy, would recommend. They paired well with the sauces that came on the side as well. The mushroom miso udon was different. The sauce was creamy and umami but needed some spice. Great little stop in on a Friday night with the kids -- wasn't too busy and our food was out hot, fresh, and quick. The ambiance was quiet and we didn't feel at all out of place as there were different crowd types (families, friends, couples, etc -- all at home). The menu offers pretty large portions, so I suggest that if you're a parent eating with children like I was -- ordering one main to split with your child if they're not a super hungry eater. Haven't dined here in a while! Previously when it was all over social media, I decided to give it a try. The food is def a bit on the pricier side, however, I thought quality was good. Currently, I came again (I think my third time now). The hype is for sure down and so is the food quality. The flavor is more mild now and it's not as pleasant to dine there anymore with employee music in the back room on full blast. It's a bit disappointing and disturbing while the atmosphere is meant to be on the chill and calm side. I'd reconsider visiting again having such annoying experience on my most recent visit. Karé Bar may look aesthetically pleasing but is the food worth checking out? I decided to check out the restaurant to see for myself. Walking in, the interior is chic. From what I heard the Katsu/Donkatsu Curry are some of the best in the area so I decided to get the Donkatsu Curry. I also ordered pan fried dumplings; I was feeling hungry so yay more food. Pan Fried Dumplings can come either in Chicken or Seafood. I opted for Chicken. It comes out with five pieces and while that's fine I don't think it was anything impressive so I don't think I'd order that again. The taste tasted familiar; it had a slight crunch on the bottom since it was fried on a pan and soft near the top. Dip it with some soy sauce and it's good to keep you content until the main course comes out. My Donkatsu Curry came out and my first impressions were that it looked great presentation wise. It's a fried pork cutlet over rice with curry. There's also a fried egg on top to compliment as well. Personally I thought this dish was good but the portion felt small. I think the Donkatsu was crispy but I think I finished that dish a lot quicker than expected. The curry wasn't spicy but it was savory where you just want to dose that over everything else. For the price I think it's average. It's a place you should check out if you are craving something katsu but there are more options that I think are better for Katsu. read more

I came with a friend on a weekday to this small Japanese/Korean restaurant. We got the takoyaki, unagi kamameshi, and tonkatsu curry. My favorite was the tonkatsu curry. The tonkatsu's breading was thin and fried perfectly. I do like that the curry is served on the side so the tonkatsu doesn't get soggy. The unagi kamameshi is served in a sizzling cast iron pot, and was good, however there is a small amount of unagi. There was only one server for the whole place: she was attentive, however she was rushing around to serve every table so service was too fast-paced. Kare Bar is a really cool spot--I absolutely loved my Valentine's Day experience here. We started off with the tuna tartare and the korobota sausage. The tartare was fantastic: spicy tuna atop avocado on a delicately crispy rice cracker, finished with a quail egg yolk. It was everything you'd want from an appetizer. The korobota sausage was solid too, served on a bed of roasted whole garlic that filled the air with an amazing aroma. While the sausage was tasty, it felt a bit pricey at $9, especially compared to the $15 tuna tartare. For the mains, we ordered the oyakodon and the tonkatsu curry. The oyakodon was served in a stone pot, which gave it a lovely crispy rice bottom, though the chicken was a bit overcooked for my liking. The tonkatsu curry, clearly one of their standout dishes, featured a thick, creamy, buttery curry and double layers of crispy, freshly fried tonkatsu, accompanied by a side of fantastic cabbage. Overall, I'd give Kare Bar a solid five stars. The service was a bit hectic--probably due to the Valentine's rush and them being relatively new--but it didn't detract from the great food. The indoor seating is limited but that is due to the overall space of the location. Menu has quite alot of options to pick from. I ordered the rice bowl with katsu chicken. The presentation of this meal is AMAZING. I was so astonished by the plating! The kaarage was so crispy & paired with interesting seasoning. I do wish there was more of the sauces provided with this dish though. For dessert I had the matcha crepe and the green tea cheesecake. The actual curry itself, not so much. It looks like curry, but has a smoky bland flavor. The takoyaki appetizer is not worth ordering. It is a frozen takoyaki smothered in mayo and katsuobushi. It only comes in 4 pieces and although it looks pretty, definitely not worth ordering. The service here is not the friendliest. It's not fast either and definitely not inviting. It can take a hot minute to get seated and with an attitude. I remember standing around at the entrance for a while with my dining companion while customers just stared at us. Kare Bar's vibes are off the charts. The entire restaurant feels as if you've been transported into someone's cozy home. The lighting is inviting, there are curtains to separate tables, and the music selection was great! They were playing swing music, which is a rarity to hear in public. My girlfriend and I were totally jamming out while waiting for our food. We ate here for a somewhat late dinner on a Monday night - around 8:00. The place was empty, which concerned me a little bit, but then again it was a Monday. The server was not really that attentive considering we were the only guests, as my water was empty for quite a lot of the meal. We ordered the Ika Geso (basically fried squid) and Karaage for appetizers. The two looked very similar, but the Ika Geso had a much better texture and flavor to it. It's a bit awkward having to dust your food in the spices they scatter on the plate, and equally as awkward having to spoon them out from the containers at your table. I would prefer a sauce over a spice mix. For the mains, we ordered a Tonkatsu Entree and a Shrimp Katsudon. I had misinterpreted the Tonkatsu Entree a bit, as I thought it came with a salad. It turns out the cabbage underneath the Tonkatsu was considered the salad (...yeah, I was disappointed). The miso was actually REALLY flavorful. I never order miso soup and I only have a little bit to tide me over when it's part of a meal, but this miso I actually enjoyed eating. It was really rich, unlike a lot of other miso's I've had which seemed very watery. The tonkatsu itself was pretty good. Not the best I've had but certainly satisfied my cravings for tonkatsu. The sauce was a little scarce. As for the shrimp katsudon - the portion was HUGE and it came out in a steaming bowl, fajita style. Neither of us had any idea it was like this, but her food was hot the entire meal. She had to scoop it out onto her appetizer plate to let it cool down. It also seems that every entree comes with a small portion of potato salad and pickled cabbage, which were ok. My girlfriend ended up taking home about 1/3 of the bowl as leftovers. We were very satisfied with the experience. The small issues we had are easy to overlook because the portions are large, the food is tasty, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. If you're in the mood for Japanese food in the Chantilly area, Kare Bar will certainly hit the spot. read more

Not really a must try. - Chicken Katsu Curry and it was really good, the presentation was amazing. It was a satisfying meal. - Vegetable Curry Rice which was similar to the chicken version except it comes with tofu and the curry is way thinner in consistency, more like a soup but tasted really well. It comes with fried tofu but I asked for steamed tofu and the server was really nice, she asked the chef and agreed to it. But I was later just given a cold block of tofu right from the refrigerator which kinda killed the taste of the dish because it didn't go that well( too cold) with the warm curry.
