Having exhausted most of the nearby options for takeout sushi, my wife and I reluctantly tried Kumo for a recent weeknight dinner despite the so-so reviews. We ultimately enjoyed our meal and will likely try it again the next time we need a change of pace from our go-to spot. The menu possesses a vast array of rolls, the majority of which hover between $15-18. Seeing the prices of the rolls and not knowing what to expect, we ended up ordering six, which ended up as too much food for the two of us. We found the rolls all well constructed and with generous quantities of the fish. The rice itself was passable. The sliced fish quality was decent, and we found the salmon and tuna particularly fresh. The "spicy" fish in the rolls left something to be desired in both the degree of spice/seasoning as well as freshness. The rolls all could have used a bit more saucing, but we enjoyed them nonetheless. The prices here are very reasonable, especially if you order online which yields a 10% discount. My order was prepared more or less on time. Overall, we liked what we sampled and will return in the near future to sample more rolls. Kumo does not quite supplant our usual sushi spot, but it's a welcome addition to a takeout rotation and worth a shot for roll lovers. read more

The food was okay. I saw it had great reviews so I was excited to find a new good sushi spot in the area. Honestly, I'm disappointed. I got two roles, both tasted the exact same and fairly bland. I can think of tons of other spots in the area where the sushi really impressed me. The ambiance is really nice and the service was fairly quick. As a frequent sushi eater- I can confidently say that this is my number one favorite sushi restaurant in the area. From the vast selection they have on the menu to the always quick and efficient seating/tabling- this is the best. I have been going to Kumo Sushi since before the pandemic, so for at least 4 years now and haven't had a bad experience. I highly recommend the incredible huck roll (middle round dish in photo), that is a crowd favorite! I also recommend trying their cocktail drinks (not pictured) as I've had a few over the years and they're delicious. While the price range isn't cheap, the quality and experience make up for the price in of itself. I tend to come on birthdays and anniversaries to make it feel even more special for the higher price! It seems to be in a really nice area - part of an outdoor walking shopping area - and once we found it, discovered there is a lot of parking in a large lot right across their door. It's bright, clean, and spacious inside. Service is fast and friendly. Sadly we weren't that excited about the food. The salad was overdressed and our sushi was meh. We didn't order anything fancy - maybe that's why? Also the teriyaki tofu dish was entirely deep fried - yech. KUMO is BACK!!!! Today, we celebrated a birthday at Kumo in Herndon and we all had a great experience. The hospitality and service was excellent. The servers were super friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Rock Shrimp and Calamari for appetizers(our favorite was definitely the Rock Shrimp!) For our shared entrées we got the Love Boat for 2 , Dragon Roll, Incredible Hulk Roll, and a Dancing Dragon Roll. For a table to 5 people, we could not even finish all the delicious sushi in one sitting. The sushi chefs did a great job with plating and making everything feel so fancy. Price is really reasonable and the quality of fish is superb! The reason I said "Kumo is Back" is because they have been closed during the pandemic and recently just opened up for dining for a few months now. Totally recommend this place for a warm and enjoyable family sushi night! The servers also gave us ice cream on the house! So sweet of them. Wonderful waitress, tasty sushi, and most entrees come with a pleasant Miso soup or Small salad with a refreshing carrot-ginger dressing. (Not the Mayo version some stores have started using, which I am very thankful for). They also provide a piece of orange at the end of the meal as a delightful palate cleanser. My wife and I come her regularly for quality sushi at a reasonable price, and wonderful service. PS, becuase I know this is a silly thing to care about, but they have these wonderful high quality paper napkins that are very satisfying to use; and in this rare instance I prefer them to cloth because it means I can clean up my Soy sauce drips without guilt. read more

Surprised I haven't reviewed Kumo in the past. This is our favorite sushi place in the area. We love their creative list of rolls, with flavors that compliment the fish rather than hiding it. Having been going here (primarily for takeout) so long that we still order the "2011 roll" regularly. If you dine in, the presentation is also creative and artistic. I highly recommend trying it. Pretty good, I'm only reviewing based on takeout, I had unagi, spicy tuna and hamachi sashimi and felt underwhelmed by at least the hamachi and tuna. It just didn't taste fresh. I tried the Godzilla Roll which was tuna, avocado, salmon roe and unagi sauce. It was deep fried as a full roll and sliced. It looked good, tasted great except for the fried portion which felt plastic like. I'll give them a shot in the restaurant but overall wasn't impressed. I was craving some sushi tonight, and the place I would normally frequent was closed so I decided to try something new! I started with a hot tea (which they kept filled for me) and a bowl of edamame while I perused the menu. I don't typically enjoy fried or cooked rolls, so I tried a couple of their appetizers including the Yellowtail Jalepeño. I wish I took a picture of that one because it was beautiful and delicious! Highly recommend that dish. The yellowtail was thin sliced, tasted fresh, and was complemented by the Jalepeño and sauce in the dish. I then tried the black pepper tuna appetizer. I would also get this one again (remembered to take a photo, finally). Last I had the black pepper tuna roll, which was very good. It had fresh cucumber and dashes of a very light sauce. Of the three, the yellowtail Jalepeño was my favorite dish, but I would order any of these again. Mediocre at best... I ordered their spicy salmon roll (good), their rainbow roll (really unimpressive), their 10 piece sashimi box (half good, half bad) and a red tobiko sushi (bad). Salmon is my favorite sushi by far and their salmon quality wasn't great which ruined the salmon sashimi and rainbow roll for me. Luckily their white fish was actually great, which they gave me 4 pieces of in the sashimi box (their saving grace). What ticked me off the most is that they put 2 small pieces of imitation crab in the sashimi box and tried to play that off as 2 of the 10 pieces of sashimi? Half of it was a bit dry on the outer edges, and I basically forced it all down, because I was hungry and well, this was my dinner... I can't think of a single bite that was enjoyable. Spoke with a manager at the restaurant and he confirmed this amount was incorrect and asked that I reach out to doordash as they could not do anything on their end. I ordered take out from here based on the glowing reviews, and maybe they were having an off evening, but I was extremely disappointed with my oder and thought it would be worth giving a fair, but honest review of why. I ordered a shrimp tempura and a spider roll, 2 of my all time favorites across restaurants. At first glance the rolls did look a little different than I was expecting but I figured each place has their own style of execution. Well when I started the shrimp tempura roll, I was extremely underwhelmed with how **little** shrimp was in the rolls, and how **much** cucumber and lettuce I was tasting. When I pivoted to the spider roll, I unfortunately was equally as disappointed to taste mostly cucumber, lettuce, and a bizarre fishy flavor (there is no fish in spider rolls). Upon further inspection, my spider rolls were rolled with some sort of soggy, but fried fish. I have really never had such a negative experience with sushi but at the end of a long day, I was really hoping trying this place out would be a good pick-me-up. Food has declined in quality and they seem to have premade the rolls because they come off super fast when I went at 1:30. Rice was a little hard on the outside meaning it wasn't fresh. Ordered delivery via door dash. The food I received was actually flavorful. However, not sure what it was I received. Originally I order beef sukiyaki ( $16 hot pot) and I received a call that they were out, so I ordered the chicken. What I got instead was basically a chow mein with thin noodles and a bowl of miso soup. I was hungry and it tasted good, so I ate it anyway. I wouldn't consider it a hot pot, the miso soup and noodles were basically separate meals , so it was odd to receive them together. Shumai was flavorful and fresh. Unfortunately I have to agree with the other review written today about these rolls being incredibly bland. I ordered two rolls and an avocado salad and my order came to about $55 so this wasn't the quality of fish I was expecting for the price. My salad was very good and fresh so I had high hopes for my rolls. The dancing dragon roll was incredibly disappointing -The tempura shrimp might have been the smallest shrimp I've ever seen in a roll and the spicy tuna was actually offensive. It had zero flavor zero spice but had the look and smell of canned tuna. The Kani was overpowered by the sesame oil it was swimming in. We each tried one bite and tossed the rest because we questioned the quality of the tuna. The amigos roll was better but also on the bland side - I was glad to have a roll I didn't feel obligated to toss after a bite. Kumo used to be a 4 star place but they have gone down significantly in all categories. We've ordered here many times in the past both take out and dine in. Tonight sealed the deal and we will not be ordering here again. The sushi rice was chewy (and possibly old?) as was the nori. 6 rolls and an app for $100, the price doesn't match the quality. The order took 40 minutes to fill yet there were only 3 people in the restaurant?? Tuesday at 6:30 and 3 people...maybe everyone else is getting tacos. read more

This review is for takeout hibachi. I got the scallops and overall it wasn't the best. There just wasn't really any flavor to the scallops or the vegetables or the fried rice. The shrimp sauce was extremely diluted with water and thin. The ginger salad was really good, fresh greens and more than enough dressing. Clear soup was a bit less flavor than usual as well. I'll probably give them another try but next time go for some sushi. read more
