Waiter acts like he is brain dead. Slow and confused. None of the staff smiles, it's sort of depressing. Everything on the buffet bar is cold, whether it's supposed to be or not. They don't have any type of crackers for the crab legs, and the forks are plastic. Hard to open up crab. My volcano roll was on a bed of lettuce and cut julienne style. Never seen that before. The sushi was average at best, strawberry margarita had to be sent back, the crab Rangoon was good. Probably won't ever be back in the area and will definitely never be back in here. read more

Solid Choice Food Everything tasted fresh and they had a good selection on the menu. We ordered the Spicy Rainbow Roll (no jalapenos) and the kabuki Roll (no masago). Both were very good. My 15 year old daughter who likes spicy food was glad she had them take off the jalapeños as it was almost too spicy without them. We enjoyed both and would probably order it again if we came back or might try something new if we were in the mood. Overall I'd say they were solid choices we've had better and certainly worse. Had lunch at Sushi Umi today. The food was great. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and Otoro and ikura nigiri from the a la carte menu. My coworker had the taste of Umi lunch portion. Mine was great and filling. The fresh wasabi was a nice touch and the ramen was very flavorful. The chasu was cooked well and the egg was good. I would have also liked some nori, but I'm not going to be picky. The green tea was pretty standard but it did hit the spot. Our service was excellent. Any time we had empty dishes, they were promptly taken away without being intrusive. I consider that to be perfect service. The decor was nice with a classy feel and ambiance. There were small lamps on the table to provide and little more light and I should have taken more pics of the inside as well as the menu, but alas, I didn't. I think I was too hungry. I recommend Sushi Umi for a date or a semi-splurge lunch especially if someone else is picking up the tab. I'd come here again, though parking was a little challenging. I had a good time here for dinner with a friend. Parking was a bit hard to find because it was a very busy shopping plaza. The place was smaller than I expected but provided a nice cozy vibe. I ordered Miso Soup for my appetizer, it was standard and came out hot. I also ordered the Rock & Roll and the Kubuki roll. Now that I think about it, I just realized they gave me the wrong roll but it's fine. Both were good but nothing exceptional. I preferred the Rock & Roll more as a fan of eel. Sushi Umi (along with Ariake and Sushi Cho) is easily one of my favorite local sushi spots. Every time I come here, the servers are super wonderful and very attentive. The fish is always super fresh and I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered here. My go to is the taste of Umi box. It used to come with 8 different selections of the chef's choice, but it seems like they recently changed it so there are 6 different selections (but each selection is now a bigger portion). It does make me sad since one of my favorite selections was the roe with quail egg and rice, but nevertheless, the new taste of Umi box is just as delicious as before. Overall, I love this spot for lunch or dinner--just note that dinner is double the price for the taste of Umi box. Now that my wife is no longer pregnant, she and I are on the hunt for great sushi spots in the area. We tried Sushi Umi for takeout based on the strength of its reviews and appetizing selection of specialty rolls. We felt that the sushi here fell short both of our expectations and of the offerings of local competitors. The fish did not appear particularly fresh, and some of the toro we got in one of our rolls tasted straight up fishy. While we enjoyed the flavor combinations of the rolls themselves (particularly the spicy "Mexican" roll), the major flaw of so-so fish detracted from an otherwise solid eating experience. Furthermore, Umi charges on average ~$20 per speciality roll, and the quantities are not particularly generous. While Umi wasn't bad, multiple equally good and cheaper options nearby render us unlikely to return soon. read more

The restaurant is very nice inside - they have these cool little lamps on each table. I also got an order of udon. The udon broth was very aromatic and delicious. Not too salty. I shared the bowl with my friend. And we got 2 regular rolls and 1 specialty roll. We were full! The sushi was so soft and you can taste the greatness of the rice. The skin is crunchy and the meat is very tender. Three rolls are all amazing (the best), Dragon, Umi, and Worldgate. The rice is good and thin but it is not loose, tightly accommodating all kinds of delicious staff like eel, salmon, etc. the source is sooooo good. My friend also reported the teriyaki beef with rice is well made. The only complaint is the price. Compared to a similar quality I have had in other places, this places is in a higher end of price. They weren't absent, but not in your face. It was appreciated. The decor is tasteful and simple. I ordered the Salmon Lovers entree from he lunch menu. First of all, taste of umi for lunch special doesn't come with 3x3 box. There are only 6 plates, but 2 are fries and cost $36, which means $6 each. I only ordered this for IG but failed because lunch special doesn't even look fancy at all. This is ridiculous for what comes out in this omakase box. $6 for two little meatball fries & $6 for two tiny fish fries & $6 for two eel fillets with 4 slices of avocado??? Like really??? I would expect to see all sashimi at this price. Who gets fries for omakase? Second, miso soup I got smelled really weird. It smelled like soup was contained in electronic appliance for too long that it gives off smell of electricity with every sip. Third, I would NOT recommend Umi Tempura to anyone. Seriously, it was just a mix of ingredients battered fried and cost $12?? Just get vegetable fries. Honestly Ariake did so much better job with pricing and menu. Overall, I would say sashimi was very nice quality but considering price and what comes out in a plate was sooo disappointing. Worth the wait! I ordered the Taste of Umi and it did not disappoint. The fish was perfectly seasoned, fresh and phenomenal. The Toro melted in my mouth and the wagyu was authentic, tender, and perfectly seasoned. I even enjoyed the sea urchin, which is often hit or miss. The vegetables were all fresh and crisp making each mouthful perfect. They have house made soy sauce that is light yet still flavorful and more complex than what you typically get stateside. I wish I had gotten some special rolls just to dip in the soy sauce. The ambiance of this restaurant is casual and very clean. Everything was immaculate despite being fairly busy on a Saturday night. The staff was kind and attentive. My only flaw is that I mentioned I was allergic to sesame and not to include it and they definitely brought me sesame dressing on my salad and I believe some of the sauces for the taste of Umi have sesame. I avoided the salad after one bite and tried to scrape off the sauce but it's raw fish so that doesn't work. This happens at many such restaurants so I'm used to it and docked a single star since I know I will be sick (hopefully not too much) this evening. So if you have a sesame allergy as well, maybe be cautious dining here or expect a rough night. Overall though, I'd be back in a heartbeat. The sushi was phenomenal. read more

Service was good, friendly staff, and while it's a small place, booth tables were large and provided ample space for our order. The nostalgia hit hard, and I was ready to relive our Japan days. We started with otoro nigiri and tuna maki rolls, and let me tell you, the otoro was chef's kiss. It melted in our mouths like butter, and we knew it was the real deal. The house salads with sesame dressing? A simple joy I didn't realize I missed. Then came the main dishes, and things got... interesting. The chicken karaage? Not my favorite. The breading was heavy and greasy, and the chicken was overcooked. Not exactly the light, crispy perfection I was hoping for. My husband, on the other hand, was loving his tonkotsu ramen--exactly what he wanted. He also ordered fried avocado because, well, of course he did (so American). I took a bite, and yeah... not for me. He liked it, though, so I'll give him that. I'm a bit pickier when it comes to details, and between the karaage misstep, the ripped booth seating (not a good look, y'all), and some awkwardness among the staff, I feel there's room for improvement. We chose the Taste of Umi, a chef's selection of raw or cooked fish served in a wooden box, along with the Sushi Duo (Kami Kaze and Kabuki Roll). Both dishes were fresh and delicious. I appreciated the serving of raw wasabi that accompanied the Taste of Umi wooden box; it was mild and not overly spicy, and it paired well with the house soy sauce. I actually stopped by another restaurant since it was closer to me but after sitting down to order, they said they were not serving sushi that night and only offering their Taiwanese dishes. Very disappointed, I left and found this place. I guess things happen for a reason because this place was amazing! I ordered the avocado fries and dynamite roll. Both were very good but I think I'd come back just for the avocado fries. They were battered and fried but not greasy. The dipping sauce added great flavor.
