The rolls were perfectly balanced: the Firecracker Roll had just the right kick, the Volcano Roll was rich and indulgent, and the Shrimp Tempura Roll was crispy without being greasy. The Rainbow Roll was vibrant and fresh, while the Spicy Tuna hit that clean, spicy sweet spot. The sashimi and nigiri was also high quality fresh fish. I was glad to see that a Japanese restaurant had recently come to Reston Town Center. Apart from a ramen place, It had been years without one. When Kusshi opened, we gave it some time to settle in. We were here on a Sunday for an early dinner. Even though we arrived early (around 4 p.m.), a few tables were already occupied. As we entered the place, a party of four was right behind us. So it seems popular. After looking at what was available (the menu is a la carte), we placed our orders. We started with our drink orders. I ordered a hot cup of genmaicha, only to be told they were all out--bad news on such a cold day. The server offered to bring me a hot cup of barley water, which I declined and stuck with tap water. My husband ordered a Kirin Light beer. For an appetizer, we chose shishito peppers, and we both ordered miso soup. The sizable portion of peppers was well-grilled and flavored. Shishitos are tricky. For the most part, they are mild peppers. However, like Anaheim peppers, sometimes a hot pepper shows up. The first two I ate, oh...they were hot. The rest were mild. We ordered miso soup. It arrived steaming hot. It was excellent. It was a larger serving than what most Japanese restaurants provide. It had a generous amount of tofu and green onions. It was almost a meal in itself. For my main course, I chose a "rainbow roll" which consists of: "California roll with tuna, salmon, and yellowtail". It was a very generous-sized roll, well assembled. The wasabi and ginger portion was quite adequate. A bottle of low-sodium soy sauce is placed on the table. I really enjoyed this roll. My husband ordered the "Teriyaki dinner" which consists of "grilled protein, stir-fried seasonal vegetables served with steamed rice and teriyaki sauce. The choice of proteins are chicken, salmon, or shrimp. He chose chicken. It was quite a sizable portion, so we took some home to have for lunch the next day. At one point during the meal, our server brought us each a cup of hot barley water (to make up for not having hot tea). Since barley doesn't agree with me, I passed on it. Overall, the service was very friendly and efficient. The vibe definitely says "Japanese restaurant" with the decor and the requisite sushi bar. One drawback is the sound level. We came for a girls lunch and left super full and happy! This restaurant is a great addition to RTC and is located adjacent to the running store. The ambiance is bright and modern and service was exceptional. There were great lunch specials and I ordered the two rolls for $14, getting the spicy tuna and tuna with avocado. My friend said her salmon bento was delish and it looked perfect! The miso soup was flavorful and a nice warm touch on a cold winter day. I loved their HH deals here! Super worth it! The Seared Fatty Salmon was definitely my favorite, it seriously just melts in your mouth as soon as you eat it. Kusshi is amazing! I came here for happy hour last week with a friend who lives nearby. It was amazing! We tried the shumai, the dumplings, shishito peppers, and an embarrassing amount of rolls, including the soft shell crab roll which is one of my favorites. Our sever was fantastic! I wish I had his name, but he was sweet, helpful and focused. It's not a huge place, but it is very nicely decorated and very comfortable. I'm so jealous that I can't just pop in once or twice a week!. But if you can, you definitely should! read more

We tried the boat for 2 which was actually way too much for 2 people I couldn't try it all! The firecracker roll was delicious with the crab salad on top and was spicy. The ovi roll was good too but the firecracker roll had more flavor. I tried some of the nigiri, the tuna was excellent as well as the special salmon that was served. We also tried the seared salmon (sake) crudo. So good with the truffle oil! I will be back. I also like the salmon sashimi. I didn't get to try the rest of the sashimi but it looked great. He took time to go over the menu with me and point out some of the house favorites and specials. My server was also very friendly and gave me great service. While we had a great first experience at Kusshi in RTC, subsequent visits for takeout have consistently disappointed. The same rolls we enjoyed during our in person visit now uniformly possess mushy, bland, and overly compacted rice. The fish quality has also taken a nosedive, with both the freshness and cuts of the fish much poorer than we initially experienced and relative to other local competitors. I can't recommend this place any more for sushi due to repeatedly subpar meals. Kusshi retains two weak stars for generous portion sizes and a nice interior ambiance. read more

All of the flavors melt in your mouth! I could pass on the samurai roll. The Wagyu fried rice was made extremely salty, but was pretty good otherwise. Honestly surprised by the reviews here. I've come into the restaurant twice for lunch and ordered takeout for dinner a few times. The takeout sushi rolls seemed fairly good for delivery. However in person the raw fish (sashimi bento box and other items) for lunch tasted really unappealing and not fresh. The atmosphere is nice and service was fairly good, but I don't think I'll be back for fresh sushi. A couple things I pay attention to when I try a new sushi place: the quality of their sushi rice, ginger, and the flavor of basic fish like salmon and tuna. I didn't like any of the above here. This may be a good spot for cocktails or cooked appetizers, but I don't see the appeal for sushi. read more
