Tucked into the shopping plaza, Kimen Ramen provided a cozy atmosphere and great food. We tried the chicken karage and gyoza for apps. Both were pretty good! I had the tantanmen for my entree and my husband got the spicy ramen. I think his broth was more flavorful than mine, but I really liked that they didn't up charge for the toppings. I found this hidden little gem in a shopping center about 30 minutes away from Washington, DC. It's a small cozy restaurant, with cute decorations. The restaurant can accommodate about 20-25 for occupancy. We started out with drinks, it's canned soda with no refills. We started with appetizers the pork gyoza and kimchi (interesting), unfortunately there was no special sauce with it. We all ordered the kimen and miso ramen. The kimen ramen was hot and flavorful especially during the winter season to warm your belly fulls. It was delicious about a 9.0 out of 10. Then ordered the Tantanmen ramen which was spicier than your typical miso or shoyu based ramen. We order lots of different food, the karagee, the chicken katsu, different types of ramens, a yuzu highnoon. Super happy I found this small ramen place. It's a tiny spot tucked away in the corner of the shopping center. We got chicken karage for appetizer. They were making it fresh cuz the chicken was pipping hot and super crunchy. Main dish we got Tantanmen and Spicy Ramen. And WOW highly recommended spicy ramen. Being the ramen lovers that my husband and I are, I really wanted to love this place as it's closer to home than other ramen shops but it just didn't hit the spot for us. Kimen also has another location in Annandale as well. We started off with the gyoza and adegashi tofu for appetizers and both had the spicy ramen with pork (there was also an option for chicken). The gyoza wrapping was a bit too thick for my liking and the adegashi tofu was tasty. The ramen was mediocre in terms of flavor (the spice overtook the soup and I didn't even add any extra spice) but the toppings were generous. Outside of a handful of appetizers and ramen, they also serve specialty ramens, donburi, curry donburi, and katsu. They also serve alcoholic beverages (beer, sake, soju) as well as a small selection of iced teas and Japanese soda. Really yummy ramen! They have huge amounts of sides, and I was pleasantly surprised. Usually, I have to ration out the pork, but here I was able to enjoy some with every bite. Our waiter was very friendly and checked in at good intervals. He was very quick to get our orders and give us the check. The interior was really cute, with a lot of anime-themed decorations and lighting. It's definitely smaller, but there were still ample amount of seating for everyone. We took the "bar" seats, but a table wait was roughly 15-30 minutes from what the waiter told us. Was in the Fair Lakes area running errands right around lunchtime and needed a place to have lunch. Not a negative or show-stopper - but not a place to bring a large party. Not a ton of tables and more 2 tops than 4. Going there solo for a bite to eat is fine - there's a whole counter of single seating along one wall. Full service restaurant but pay at the counter when you're finished. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente chewy-just-right. THE RAMEN BROTH LEFT SOMETHING TO BE DESIRED THOUGH. I was disappointed that the broth was thin and not as deeply flavorful as good solid ramen should be. The flavor of the broth can make or break the dish - and in the case of Kimen's ramen, the broth was a detractor. Not a deal breaker but disappointing. Buttttttttttt SOMETHING THAT CAN EASILY BE FIXED.... Would I come here again? Sure, I might - if I'm in the area. I would be open to coming back and trying some other Japanese classic menu items. While we were there the restaurant filled up, and had pick up and door dash orders. Seldom do I eat everything including the brother but I always clean my bowl here, as do my kids. The pork belly bun, the tempura veggies, the chicken katsu... we have tried a few things and they are all amazing. The decor is fantastic my partner wants to design our basement like this. I dined at Kimen Ramen on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at 1 pm. First impressions upon walking in the restaurant, I really admired the collage of Japanese and anime posters on the walls. If you're lucky enough to be seated at a table next to the wall, it could keep you preoccupied to admire the wall as you wait for your food. The dining room was smallish, but did not feel cramped as the tables were adequately spaced apart. As far as food goes, I was pretty satisfied. I ordered the spicy ramen. I am a huge ramen-lover myself and my ramen bowl checked all the boxes that a proper restaurant-quality ramen should have: 1) developed, balanced, and flavorful broth; 2) freshly cooked noodles; and 3) fresh ingredients. The proportions of noodles, meat, and broth was perfect. I thought the spice level was good - not too spicy or overwhelming. My spice tolerance is average, so those that can eat really spicy should expect the spicy ramen to be pretty low in spice level. I'm sure you can ask to make it more spicy. The takoyaki octopus ball was a great appetizer if you like savory fried balls with generously sized octopus inside. Service was excellent. The server was friendly and attentive to refill waters on several occasions. The food was brought out together and in reasonable time. Overall, I thought it was a memorable dining experience.
