There's a lot of spots for improvement here, but I'd also say that Lylo is one of the few businesses I've ever seen do such a visually-great escape out from their pool area. If you're here for the escape and temper your expectations for food or drink, I think you'd have a good time. There are a TON of mosquitos here, so prepare accordingly. The bar and hotel lobby didn't have bug spray nor any for sale. The nearby liquor store does have some for sale at less than a block's walk. (The pool is hot mid Phoenix summer. The pool itself felt closer to a hot tub than a refreshingly cold pool. I'm told this is normal for pools in Arizona in the summer.) PROS: -All of the drinks are really pretty, visually, and with the pool, you have a great mecca for social media photos. -Despite the ridiculous 110+ Phoenix heat, we were relatively comfortable in the shaded restaurant area with the misters. We could still see the pool, but we weren't baking alive. -Pool bathrooms were clean enough. There were lots of puddles and toilet paper on the ground, but nothing was horrific or moldy like some pool bathrooms can be. Spacious stalls for changing too - though I didn't see any shower or changing areas. -The pool area itself is pretty! It makes for gorgeous Instagram photos, and Lylo knows that. There are lots of little spots (a camp sign, a chair off on its own, all the loungers, etc.) that make cute photo backdrops in addition to the pool itself. -There is a collection of inflatable pool toys in the corner that seem to be open for guest use. CONS: -Water bottles are not allowed at all - not even sealed disposable plastic ones from the grocery store. They'll store them for you, and you can fetch your own water with disposable plastic cups while you're here. -The misters in the pool area were broken. With the heat, we chose not to actually use the pool, and instead stayed in the restaurant, shaded area with misters. -All of the on-menu drinks are pretty sweet and not super boozy (at their price points). It's easy to go through quite a few at their higher price. Make sure that you're spending intentionally. -We weren't in love with the food we ordered. It felt like frozen food reheated and served to us. To be fair, that's about to be expected from a pool bar, but it was still something to note at the prices and with nearby restaurants walkable. -Service is there. I wouldn't say it was friendly or welcoming, but the servers checked in often in-between talking to people in swimsuits or joking with friends. I rarely waited for anything, but I didn't feel like a valued guest. -The fabric of the chaise loungers and lounge beds are stained. I saw some employees hauling off some of them and shoving them into the back of a fabric cleaning van, so I'd assume they rotate in and out and have to deal with a ton of spilled drinks.

Lylo Swim Club was always top of mind but I still searched to see if there was an option closer to where I live in North East Phoenix. Ultimately Lylo Swim Club was what I chose and I am very glad that I did. The fan mister gave us great comfort and the pool was the perfect temperature for us all. We called multiple times. The guy at the door informed us the other location had closed and he couldn't seat us until 8 pm unless we wanted to sit at the bar. I asked to speak with a manager and was told there was no manager there. A restaurant should always have a manager or someone on site empowered to address customer concerns. We agreed to sit at the bar. First we ordered cocktails for $17 each. While they were tasty and refreshing, they had virtually no alcohol. I ordered the Kra Pow and, on the server's recommendation, chose the pork belly. My friend ordered the Pad Ki-Mao with pork belly. After waiting 30-45 minutes for the food, it finally arrived. Mine was dry pieces of pork belly, dry rice, an egg and three cucumber slices, no sauce whatsoever. When I asked for sauce, I was offered soy sauce and hot chili. My friend's noodles were tasty, but she also thought her pork belly was dry. The server, who was also the host and bartender didn't check in on us a single time during our meal. Between the outdated website, unanswered phone, lack of management and service, long wait and underwhelming food and drinks, the entire experience was extremely disappointing. They have a small parking lot, but it's free and I was able to find a spot on a Friday evening. Ambiance (2.5/5): Speakeasies are known for their sophistication and for their hidden entry. Bar 1912 isn't much of a mystery. There are two entry points. Either a door in the back of the restaurant or a hallway inside the restaurant that's relatively easy to find as there isn't a door or anything in between the restaurant and the speakeasy. Our waiter took us there after our meal. Bar 1912 is nice, but just about average in terms of ambiance compared to other speakeasies. Part of the reason is that it's very loud (seats 30 people or so) and all of the seating at the bar are back-less bar stools (which I personally hate due to my back). I would have preferred to sit on the various couches/sofas next to the bar. Service (4.5/5): Friendly, attentive service. Exactly what you hope for when you're grabbing a drink (especially when they take a little longer to make due to their sophistication). You're provided with water without asking which is always a nice touch. I had to grab the bartender's attention once or twice, but outside of that, a job well done. Food (N/A); Since I had dinner at Valentine prior, I skipped food here. They have a small menu consisting mostly of appetizers (many, but not all, which are offered at Valentine). One option which isn't at Valentine, but which piqued my interest is the Sonoran hot dog. Had I been hungry, it would've been a no brainer. They have four or so desserts on the menu, and I had room for dessert, but none of them seemed appetizing. Drinks (4/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients. You certainly have that here. There's a focus on Native American and Hispanic influences here, which is pretty cool, and fitting since we're in Phoenix and everything. I tried two cocktails, one was a hit and one was a miss. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to cocktails, and I know what I like, so I rarely miss. Unfortunately, it happened here. With that being said, I tried some liqueurs I had never had before which is awesome. And I enjoyed the cocktail menu. This isn't the type of spot you'll find an Espresso Martini...thankfully. It looked busy but not so busy, and we were seated immediately. We didn't get an introduction to a server. Our drinks were served right away, and a gentleman we thought was our server took our order. We told him we'd never been there, and he walked us through the menu, shared recommendations, and gave us a lot of attention. He brought our appetizers, checked how they tasted, and helped us order dinner. Someone else brought dinner, which was fine, though in hindsight we wondered where we'd done something wrong. We enjoyed dinner and each other's company so much that we hadn't realized nobody had visited us for 51 minutes after dinner arrived. We thought our server had forgotten us, but we saw him covering nearby tables without making eye contact with us for the rest of the evening. The woman who'd taken our drink order and seated us cleared our plates. We asked for the bill. She said sure, made an awkward face (didn't seem pleased), nodded, and walked away. We watched her fill drinks and clear tables, but not get our bill. The gentleman continued servicing nearby tables without returning or looking our way, almost seeming to avoid eye contact. We were both staring, and not a peep in our direction. He'd been attentive before dinner, but after that--nada. I have a time stamp because I photographed dinner when it arrived. We hoped to enjoy a sweet treat for our anniversary, but with no menu or attention, we figured we should go. We'd already been there an hour after dinner arrived. I finally stood at the counter, where we'd seen others get attention, and was ignored. After about two minutes, I stood next to the party being attended until "our" server looked at me. I asked, "Aren't you our server?" He looked me directly in the eye and said, "no, I'm not." I was baffled, given he'd attended us all evening. He said, "tonight we're doing a Group service, so that's possibly why there was confusion." I felt a little gaslit being told he wasn't our server when he had been. I said OK, no problem, we'd like our bill to head out, could he help? Only then did he apologize for missing the mark. He mentioned the team being busy and the printers not working, rambled, and apologized. The woman we'd asked almost 20 minutes earlier came to the host station, avoided eye contact, grabbed something, and stepped away. He offered to remove our drinks--my partner had only a beer and sparkling water--saying, "maybe it can help soften the blow." I said that's all right, though he did not remove them. He gave us the bill. I think this was the first time I didn't leave a cash tip, regrettably. One of the worst service experiences I've had at dinner with my partner. The ambience was nice--it's giving evening romance. It looked busy, but not so busy you couldn't attend a table. Nearby tables received service, check-ins, refills, and bussing. I had much higher hopes. Let's talk food. I had the Hamachi. He might have tried to talk me out of it, to his credit, but my partner had tasty hamachi elsewhere and I was excited for good fish. The flavor was good, but it was overcooked and not as tender as it could've been. The dish was unique, but I don't think the flavors blended well: a slightly sweet vinegar salad, green chili sauce underneath, and a crispy shell on the fish. Together, they didn't complement well. I should've listened. He said other dishes were more preferred and ordered, and one guest had ordered it and left unpleased. My partner's elote pasta we enjoyed. The crispy corn, the pasta texture, Parmesan, subtle flavors, and tasty sauce combined beautifully. The noodles were cooked perfectly, so that was finished. We very much enjoyed the pretzel!! It was his suggestion, and we complimented it to him, talking about how delicious and magical it was: almost crispy outside, a teeny hint of sweet but savory, and so soft inside it almost melted in your mouth. The soft whipped butter and honeycomb square were delightful. All three together were delectable! We also enjoyed the baby salad and baby radishes. The dressing was perfect, with a Caesar hint and some sweetness; the pepitas were yummy. My partner isn't a big salad fan, but tried it and said it was really good. Dinner was $116. We were mostly happy with the meal. Service brings this review down. I'd rate food 3 1/2 stars; it wasn't out of this world. I have no desire to return. I can't tell you if they offer dessert; perhaps there's another menu we weren't offered. The bar in back, 1912 - great drinks. We could've enjoyed liquid dessert but were done after being ignored. The patio looks divine! Note how "busy" our photos look: plenty of empty spots and at least eight front-of-house staff who didn't help.

Don Woods' certainly has that, though I've seen better in Phoenix. You can see the mountains in the background, but that's about it. The hotel is located on a busy street, where you'll often hear the noise of cars buzzing by or the train choo-chooing. Did I just make up a word?! I imagine the best time to stop by is during sunset. The outdoor area is relatively narrow with seating for about 20-30 people. It's a mix of comfortable seats and tables/chairs. There's also a charming indoor area, where the bar is located, but I felt like I had to sit outside. The weather was perfect, too. Service (2.5/5): This is where the comedy of errors began. I was given a menu and some water and was left to peruse the menu. Before the waitress had returned, I had picked out an appetizer and a cocktail. I then discovered that their cook had quit the other week and as a result, no food was available. That's fine and all, but you've gotta give me a heads-up when giving me the menu.
