I really love Houston Hot Chicken, so I was excited when a location finally opened near Midtown. I've always enjoyed it, but unfortunately, my last three orders (third being today) have been pretty disappointing. I always order the chicken medium spice (usually is a bit spicy), but lately, it has barely had any seasoning or flavor. The fries have also been underseasoned and just haven't been as good as they used to be. I don't like leaving negative reviews because I genuinely love this place, but after three disappointing orders in a row, I felt like I had to say something. I had lunch today at Houston TX Hot Chicken. Combo with Spicy sandwich and Lift-Off tendie. There is one spice level above Lift-Off, and it requires a waiver. So I'll call Lift-Off their hottest non-waiver and Spicy the 2nd hottest. I was not impressed with the flavor of the sandwich or the tender, both were just OK taste wise, and the chicken was chewy and tough. The crinkle fries were quite good, and their house sauce is also quite good. I was impressed with the spice level, there is real heat here. I found the tendie to be spicy but palatable. One of my coworkers asked to try the tendie and her reaction to the heat was much more significant. Also, the service was good and friendly, as was the expediency in which they brought my order out. I'm so glad this location opened and it's not too far from home. I've been a fan of HHC coming from living in Vegas and am glad to see them growing in Phoenix. This location doesn't have a ton of parking so take note if it's a busy day. The inside had plenty of seating and a nice, modern trendy vibe. I always like to get the tender meal with extra house sauce. The sauce has a sort of sweet tangy flavor which I'm a fan of. I tend to stick to the medium and once in awhile mix and match one spicy but be warned that the spice is no joke. If you're a spicy fan, you'll love it. Discovered this place through a Yelp event and loved it so much that I decided to grab some food to go after a show I went to very close by. I love the huge inflatable chicken outside and all the cool artwork on the walls. This fast food restaurant has a very laid back atmosphere and the dining area is very spacious and comfortable. You place your order at the counter and they give you a number and bring out your food to you. Last time we tried mild and medium heat levels so I wanted to try different heat levels this time. We ordered a spicy sandwich and a buffalo and a spicy tender with fries. When the food was brought out, we decided to just eat in. The spicy sandwich was still very tasty but I definitely tasted and felt the heat! It was much spicier than medium heat. First time at the new Houston TX Hot Chicken. First, even before the food I want to compliment the service. The gentleman that took our order (Spencer) was exceptionally nice, all the staff were exceptionally nice! The food was also great. I had a kids meal and it was a lot. I also wanted to try the chicken tortilla soup. It was really good, the only advice I would offer is that I would have liked for it to be a bit warmer. But it really was surprisingly delicious. I got to try this new location from a recent Yelp Elite perk and I knew I would be back. I've been a fan of HHC for a few years now and this location is easier to get to than the Tempe one, though it's basically the same distance away. I signed up for their rewards program and got a welcome deal and I decided to use it by ordering on their app. I got their tenders & waffle meal, which comes with two tenders, waffle, a side (fries) and two sauces. I chose ranch and maple syrup, and added a large cheese sauce for $4 because I'm obsessed with it. I swung by not too long after they opened and got parking in one of their covered spots. The restaurant has ample seating and tables with umbrellas outside, which would be nice to use during cooler weather. It was easy picking up my order and the employees were friendly. I was late picking up my food and had to drive home, plus I didn't eat it right away so my food was more at room temperature. I could've heated it up but still enjoyed my food. I love the balance of different spice levels and having a waffle with syrup to cool things down. Plus the fries and cheese is a nice accompaniment. Their ranch is really good and pairs well with the tenders. It was easy ordering from their app and I appreciate the deals they offer through their rewards program. I've been wanting to try this location since it opened. There is a good amount of seating inside and some outside when the weather permits. The ordering can be a bit confusing. The touch screen menu seems limited. If so, just go to the counter and order with them. I got the Original Hot Chicken Meal, medium. It comes with fries and a drink. I upgraded for a frozen blueberry lavender lemonade (delicious) and Mac and cheese (quite good and a decent portion). On to the chicken! First time trying this place that just opened last month. The concept is very cool. Inside is decorated in a rustic type setting with cool art. It was all so easy and yummy! My sister and I drove here and you really can't miss it with the huge red chicken statue out at the front. Parking was easy (we were here around dinner time on a Sunday, @ 6:30pm), the inside was nice n clean, and there was no line. The bathrooms seemed nice, and it's convenient that the sinks are outside of the toilets so you can just wash your hands. When we ordered, I was a bit confused with the menu since I'd never been here before. It didn't really help that the lady at the register was a bit blunt and not too welcoming, but it didn't really hinder my experience there, just a lil blip. But that aside, I got my order to-go and it was ready in maximum 5 minutes!! I had a fry in the car and it was crispy and warm -- I do recommend eating right away though, I think the fries softened a bit by the time I got home 10 mins later. I love the scale of spiciness too. The spiciest level I tried was the medium for my original sandwich (so juicy btw), and it was a true medium, aka not at all that spicy. One thing I personally wasn't a big fan of was the consistency of the mac and cheese (it was SUPER cheesy and thick with more cheese than macaroni, but that's my personal taste). Overall I was pretty full from the meal, the menu was affordable for the amount + quality I got, and would be interested in coming back to try another dish / another spice level! If you find yourself out past the usual dinner rush and need a solid meal, this is a fantastic local option. The Food Breakdown I ordered the 10-piece nugget meal (Mild Dry-Rub) with fries for about $15. The Chicken: The nuggets were cooked to perfection--super crispy and juicy. To be honest, the mild dry-rub lacked the flavor punch I was looking for, so, like Cane's, you must use a sauce to really bring it to life. The Fries: How did they earn four stars if the chicken was just "okay"? Simple: if you know me, you know I am a complete sucker for a good French fry. Their fries are A-1! Seriously, they earned a few return trips off the fries alone. I'll just have to dial in the right spice-level and sauce for the chicken next time. Pro-Tip for the Kiosk If you order at the kiosk, grab a number card and add the number to your digital order. They will actually walk your carry-out order right to you! As we approached the front door in mid-afternoon, a young couple were walking out the door. As they held the door for us, the woman said, "The food's not very good. If you've never eaten here before..." Never have I been warned off at the door of a restaurant before, but I wasn't going to turn around now. My wife and I ordered chicken at three different spice levels - Mild nuggets (10K SHU), a Medium tender (30K SHU), and a Spicy tender (150K SHU.). Historically, I have a high tolerance for spicy, and enjoy it; however, to calibrate my tastes for this review, let me be clear I think the whole Carolina Reaper fad is stupid. Nothing but pain, and the pepper doesn't taste good, either. I wasn't going to go any higher than "Spicy" for my first visit, and I was NEVER going to order their "Houston, We Have a Problem" level of spice. Also to level-set my preferences for this review, I am VERY disappointed at certain other freakishly popular chicken tender restaurants where the tenders basically have no flavor and you rely on a sauce to give it some. So, I like chicken with flavor, I like heat, and I like the spices to add flavor, not just heat. That's not a good match for Houston TX Hot Chicken. Let's start with the appearance. It's GORGEOUS! This is some fine-looking chicken. Beautifully battered, appealingly colored with a bit of extra red that says, "spicy!" And it was perfectly cooked, too. Tender, juicy, and right-out-of-the-fryer fresh. My wife's nuggets, looked spicy, and she was a bit worried, and they smelled spicy. We thought, perhaps, they got the spices level mixed up. They did not. They were mild, and the odor wafting off of them had more "flavor" than the nuggets themselves. My wife didn't care for them because of what she said was a "smoky" flavor. I didn't even notice that. I started with the medium tender. As previously mentioned, it was perfectly cooked, but it didn't have much flavor. There was some heat, but little else. The spice mix in/on the batter wasn't bringing much to the table. I moved on to the Spicy one. The experience did not improve. Wonderfully-cooked, flavorless chicken, battered and seasoned with flavorless spices, but they did bring the heat. Quite a bit - more than I expected. This chicken hurt, and it wasn't bringing the joy of flavor along with it. I left on the tray. Minus the batter, the chicken meat inside really was fresh and juicy white meat, devoid of flavor. They boast that they marinade all the chicken for 48 hours. I can believe that. It's tough to get white chicken meat to be anything but dry, and they succeeded, but I cannot help but wonder if they "marinade" it in plain water. The French fries were quite enjoyable. If only there'd been that much flavoring spice apparent on the chicken. I know this review sounds pretty down on it, and, it is, but it was such nice chicken in every aspect except the flavor. We all experience flavor differently, so I wouldn't go so far as to warn someone off at the door as I was leaving. Try it yourself, it might be your bag. read more

I tried the classic chicken sandwich with fries with medium spice. Next time I may do the higher spice level and the medium felt more mild than I thought it would. The fries were okay, but could have used more seasoning. The employee at the counter was a bit serious so it felt like we should hurry and couldn't ask questions. I love fried chicken, so I was excited to try Houston Hot Chicken when it opened up near Biltmore. Walking in, the small space feels bright and welcoming, with red neon signs, modern decor, and comfortable chairs that I did not expect to see in a fast food restaurant. I took the recommendations of the server at the counter and got the chicken tortilla soup. The initial bite was excellent, with crunchy and not overly processed tasting tortilla and cheese. Although soup is not something I would order normally at a fast casual or fast food restaurant, this was worth trying. There were healthy chunks of chicken, and I couldn't see this being a good option for someone looking for a less bready option. Next, I had the chicken sandwich with honey butter. It had a tinge of the lightest amount of spice, but was not what I would call spicy. The sandwich was slightly more drenched than I would like and the slaw felt like overkill, however, the breading itself was light and crispy and the chicken inside was juicy but looked fully cooked. I wouldn't say this was a highlight in any way, but I would eat it again, probably at the medium spice level to get a better idea of the heat index. I did overhear a staff member saying there used to be a competition to eat the hottest level and last 3 minutes without anything to drink! Last, I had the tender and fries. The tenders are definitely the highlight! I could not believe how juicy and perfect it was. the skin was so thin it was coming off, but perfectly seasoned to compliment the chicken underneath. The proportion of tender to breading was a 10 out of 10. The crinkle cut fries were a bonus as the staff member said she knew I didn't order them, but wanted me to have them. Crispy and not overrated, I could see these being dangerous late at night. The only two knocks are that the parking lot is confusing and there is no drive thru. Not being able to pick this up in a pinch makes it a concerted effort to go, and the turn in is not as easy from the south side of Camelback. The cheese fries with the tender was also quite tasty. Note that their menu items aren't meal deals like you would expect; they only come with a side and you would need to buy a drink for an extra $3.00. I got a spicy level 15 piece chicken nuggets, a fountain drink, a chocolate milkshake, and a chocolate chip cookie. I picked the Belgian waffle side to go with my nuggets. This cost around $28 and was good enough for two meals. I was told I could get two sauces so when I choose my two, I was surprised they charged me for the second sauce; they really shouldn't lie like that. The chocolate milkshake was quite disappointing. I was expecting chocolate ice cream but all you get is vanilla ice cream but with a bunch of Hershey's chocolate syrup; I'd imagine the strawberry milkshake is made the same way. The chocolate chip cookie was definitely worse than other chocolate chip cookies I've had so I wouldn't recommend that either. The chicken nuggets were indeed spicy, but the spicy just didn't taste that good. My favorite item was the Belgian waffle which I found to be the right amount of crisp, fluff, and sweet. The new Houston Hot Chicken is a mixed bag. We stopped in to check out the new place and were greeted by the most confusing self-order kiosk I've ever used. I thought it was maybe me just being dense but the couple behind us also got stuck and the manager had to come out to help them out. The place itself is shiny and new and glitzy. Staff was friendly and helpful and there for anything we needed. The food is where things fell apart. The chicken itself was moist and well made, but it was caked in so much seasoning you couldn't taste it. I like hot chicken, but it has to be both hot... and chicken. The fries were the same way, so heavily seasoned we ended up shaking some of the seasoning off just to taste the fries. I shared a basket of chicken nuggets and fries here on 5/1 with my boyfriend during lunch time and immediately felt nauseous after walking out of the restaurant. I didn't think too much of it as sometimes greasy food can make me feel sick, but I was really struggling for the next few hours. My boyfriend then texts me saying that he also feels sick, dizzy, and generally awful. We both spent the rest of the evening and next day horribly sick. The chicken and fries were the only meal we had in common that day, so we're sure we got sick from this restaurant. I emailed their corporate contact to tell them I had a concern about their food safety, and they just sent me a generic 20% off coupon and a note about how they take food safety very seriously. First off, I don't want to ever eat here again so the 20% is useless to me. And secondly, you clearly don't take food safety seriously for you're poisoning your customers.
