Oh sweet Backyard BBQ. This hole in the wall will always hold a special place in my heart. It's the first NC BBQ I ever had when I first moved to North Carolina from the Midwest. I became an immediate BBQ lover. Did i mention hole in the wall? It's really not cute, fancy, trendy, hipster or anything to talk about. Doesn't matter. You come here for the darn good BBQ at a value that's hard to beat, not a boujee sit down BBQ experience. That actually doesn't make sense when I think about what an actual "backyard BBQ" is. Now that I'm thinking about it, the no-frills atmosphere is quite fitting. Like I said. This isn't gourmet BBQ, it's backyard BBQ. It's BBQ like your neighbors grandmother made it on Sunday morning after church. It's made with love and all the good stuff that isn't good for you, I'm sure. Backyard BBQ is 5 star food with a rough ambiance. Arrived shortly after opening and beat the lunch rush. After we received our food we noticed that a consistent line formed for the next half hour, but it moves fast because everything is cafeteria style. This place is cheap as hell. $8.50 for a pulled pork meat and two. The BBQ pulled pork is less vinegary than some of the other eastern BBQ places, but they make up for it with an awesome spice blend that packs a punch. The collards were the best I've ever had, and the Mac was very good. If you order fried food they'll fry it on the spot, so the individual wings I ordered were delightful: perfectly crispy. The ribs were fall off the bone good. They were not overly saucy. The only negative about the food is that the hush puppies were room temp and off consistency. But at least to this Yankee, hush puppies are akin to complimentary bread. Save room for the meal! Just to comment on the ambiance, the place is a bit dingy. While the place reeked of antiseptic cleaners, they may have missed a spot. Backyard BBQ is not waitress service: most people grab a takeout plate, but they have a few tables for you to eat in. Mask wearing leaves a little to be desired. In all, this is among the best bbq I've ever had, and the prices cannot be beat. They even have a working man's special which probably runs 5 or 6 bucks. Their sides are also excellent, including the fried okra and hush puppies. Bbq sandwich was terrible. The bbq was old and tasted like it came from a low end grocery store. They were out of almost everything.

The food is good, the restaurant itself needs a lot of work. The building inside looks like it is hardly ever cleaned outside of mopping and the air filters were literally sitting in the air ducts crumpled with the entire ceiling stained with dark dust. They also do not seem to clean their tables so I would bring some wipes with you if you want to use their tables. I can forgive a place being somewhat dilapidated outside, but neglecting to even keep up basic maintenance inside is very unnerving (esp. to new customers). What to get: Pulled Pork with whatever sides you want, bae. What else: I have a feeling in the Pit of my stomach that this might be the best BBQ in the Carolinas. I used to always value BBC above BBQ but this place just might change my mind. Maybe. Depends what kind of mood I'm in. But really, I've never been fond of CaroBBQ. Maybe Bessinger's and that other one just like it, out in Charleston. But generally it's not for me. Or at least, it wasn't... until I stumbled upon: The Backyard BBQ Pit. (Literally stumbled, my laces were tied to each other instead of separately. It happens.) This place has what is probably the best Carolina BBQ I've ever had, and easily the best value. In fact, it may be the best restaurant in the Triangle. It's between Backyard and Merritt's, I'd say (for their BLT with Pimento). I can't pick a fave. They're both utter perfection. It's a bit of a tragedy that locals love Kokyu across the street, too fancy and too pricy ($15 for a sandwich), when they could pay $5 for 5 times as much food that tastes 105 times better, right here. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer. Speaking of 105 times, are you free for an all-nighter this weekend? So let's see... Utterly incredible meats, sides, portion sizes, and incredible prices. They have some uneblievably perfect pulled pork, dreamy mac & cheese, dripping in grease (I know that's bad for you but if it's this good, it's worth it), juicy as a motherf***er, really great greens, and an insanely big portion for 5 dollars. I was not expecting this place to be even remotely as good as this. Speaking of remotely I want to put the Champions League on but this crappy fishing show is on where is my damn remotely. Funnily enough, I wasn't even hungry when I came (to Backyard... ahem) but that soon changed once I tasted it (the BBQ, not the BBC). Long lines at lunch time, but you'll get there quickly, much like most Carolina men. And don't forget this is not Crackyard. The people there are what set it apart though. Super friendly from the moment I walked through the door. Yeah it's real. People complaining about a funky smell reveal their ignorance of the reality of pit cooking: rendered fat smells. Backyard's pit smells waft into the restaurant. Not all pits are separated enough from the ordering/eating area. This pork is unctuous and succulent, brooding and sensual. Funky. Crucial. Urgent yet mellow. Deep and gentle. Yet robust. Yup, pretty bad sanitation rating compared to other places, but it's not the food that's to blame, but many other little things like the floors and eating areas, and storage areas. You can get docked just for having a carpet right inside the door that's not vacuumed enough, or a storage shelf that's a couple inches too short (as if a mouse couldn't crawl two more inches up the leg). EVERYTHING IS FUNKY HERE, BUT DON'T BE SCARED. Mac-n-cheese is silly - they must not know what a béchamel is (do you?) so they just dump a ton of cheese onto the macaroni and cross their fingers. It's pretty good though, even if the cheese has separated into clumps on top of oily macaroni (which is why you melt cheese into a béchamel first, before adding the macaroni). The hushpuppies were old, chewy, tough and stale. The collards: almost more ham in there than collards. Jeebus. Real good though. I coulda swore I tasted a hint of ginger and chicken broth. You go in and select from a bar and they make it to order. We just got some pulled barbq and hushpuppies with slaw. The barbq and slaw was quite good! But the hushpuppies were a disappoint. I love hushpuppies! But these were all doughy. No crispness on the outside and the inside seemed to be not quite done. The prices are quite reasonable. I point to my watch to indicate that isn't there still 15 minutes left and all the girl does is roll her eyes and then her back to the door. Backyard BBQ Pit has been a wonderful staple throughout the years. It's cheap, convenient, and the wood-smoked meats are wonderful. When I first moved to NC (in 2011) it was my first and consistent source of Southern BBQ. However, now that I've eaten at many different places, I'm not really sure if Backyard BBQ Pit holds up to the competition. It's certainly a great place to go if it's convenient. The meats (ribs, pork chops, fried fish, etc.) have always been wonderful. But as a whole I'm not sure. *********** Here are some things that I think they can improve on: *The side dishes: I'll be honest, there really isn't much investment in the sides. There are just simply other places that do brunswick stew, corn, sweet potatoes, veggies etc. much better. For example, the brunswick stew at City BBQ is a chunky, wholesome labor of love. The broth from the braised cabbage from Roy's Kountry Kitchen makes you want to suck down every drop. The meats at Backyard BBQ are still fantastic, but the sides need some lovin'. *The sanitation: Once upon a time I reached the front of the line and ordered my food. As the front employee was putting together my plate, some meat juice from my order dripped onto the counter. The employee grabbed a hand towel from under somewhere with his right hand (was it a clean towel or a dirty one?) and wiped the counter clean. Then, I watched in horror as he used the same right hand (without changing gloves) to grab some hush puppies without a utensil and placed it on top of my food. Hmmm...there must be a reason why the restaurant has a 94%-ish sanitation rating. *The line: The waiting line is a like a cafeteria-style line. As long as the food is being served and the payment process is completed quickly, then the whole process of getting food is smooth. However, it only takes one customer to make the whole line come to a grinding halt. One time in 2017 I came in to eat and the whole line didn't move because one person at the counter ordered LOTS of food to go and her food order wasn't complete. So, the payment for her food was never processed and everyone in line just sat there for like 5-6 mins waiting. It's like they couldn't temporarily switch to letting the other customers with small orders pay for their food (their food was already served so it was just sitting there getting cold). So the line at Backyard BBQ Pit is fine as long as people get their food and pay fast, but it only takes one hiccup to really slow it down. *Repeating my order x4: There was one time I came in to order food and the front employee asked what I wanted. As soon as I opened my mouth the employee turns his head to another employee and yells something to them (he was trying to tell the other employee what channel to put the TV on). So he looks back at me and asked a 2nd time I wanted. Again, as soon as I open my mouth the employee turns his head again and yells something to the person changing the TV channel. I'm thinking, "Is this for real?". It seemed as if getting this TV channel correct was the most important thing in the world. So the employee asked me a 3rd time what I wanted and again, as soon as I open my mouth he turns his head again and yells something at the other employee. In my head I'm like, "Oh my goodness". The employee asks me a 4th time and at this point I was able to articulate my order and I gave the employee an attitudinal gaze. He then looks back at me as if I'm being rude. I don't really like to repeat myself when I order food, unless it's for clarification. But to do it 4x times because there was something more important is just mind boggling. It gives the impression that the customer really isn't all that important. Thankfully, this has only happened one time in my many years of going here. *The sauce cups near the napkins: For some reason, when I go grab a small plastic cup to put sauce in there is either no plastic cap to cover it with or there is a cap, but no cup. I think it's just my bad luck. When I go there, only either the cap or the cup is available, but not both. LOLOLOLOLOL. *The dining area: While waiting in line, you can kind of get a glimpse of the kitchen. There appears to be a nice-looking wall in the kitchen and it looks like it is covered in a nice gray stone. I can't see the rest of the kitchen, but it looks nice from what I can see. Which just seems kind of weird. I think it's weird that the kitchen looks nicer than the dining area. Usually it's the other way around. Conclusion: I still like to eat at Backyard BBQ. Their meats are fantastic and it's usually on the way to my commute so it's convenient. The $5 Working Man lunch is a fantastic value too. Soooo....really I go there for the convenience, but I tend to prefer other BBQ places for the kinder service, more efficient lines, nicer interior, and better side dishes. read more

So many great reviews but not impressed..... I get the "dive bar" like feel but at least clean the restroom and make sure there aren't broken closest doors down the hall showing trash.... The food was meh, perhaps there aren't many bbq spots here that make this place a hit but I do not see it..... $14.99 for 3 babyback ribs that are smothered is sauce to cover up any flavor as well as the meat was tough... don't try to cut them with a fork. All the food shows have this place in high regard for good reason: it's awesome. For less than $8 I got the pulled pork dish with two sides and left happily full. The collards and mac n cheese were great, and honestly I'd come here for a tub of the cheesiness alone. But the pulled pork is so good, I wouldn't dare eat here without it. Got off the plane late afternoon, checked into my hotel, but was rather famished since I didn't have lunch that day. So I grabbed a friend and decided to try Backyard, based on Yelp recommendations. No, I didn't know about Backyard's appearance on "Man v. Food" until the server at the restaurant showed his t-shirt, boasting about television exposure. I went for the chopped BBQ/rib combo with Brunswick stew and mac n' cheese for sides. They ran out of fried okra, which was unfortunate. The ribs weren't the largest, but for the seemingly lack of quantity, there was quality. The sauce wasn't overly sweet yet flavorful. The ribs themselves were fall-off-the-bone and flavorful. You won't need a knife with that. The chopped pork was good, but you do need to help it out with either the restaurant's BBQ sauce. The Brunswick stew was a bit sweet, so I don't think I'll go for that again. Other than that, it had a good consistency. The mac n'cheese was a little greasy but I liked the cheesy flavor to it. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside, pretty soft on the inside with a sweet note to it. Maybe I'm used to overpriced BBQ where I'm at, but the prices seemed rather reasonable here. Service was quick, but pleasant enough. At the chair I was to sit in, there was a hole in the floor, as opposed to the wall, which had signatures/messages from a variety of people. I'm not sure what happened the first time I visited this little BBQ joint - don't know if they had a bad day, or I did (which, though rare, does occasionally happen), but we had lunch there today, and the food - all the food - was exceptional, including the Chopped BBQ. The pork is tender, moist, smokey, moderately chopped, and is properly sauced when served. The sauce is a basic Eastern NC vinegar based sauce, it is flavorful, but it is a mild sauce, no heat here. The slaw is a white mayo based, and just a tad sweet - goes very well with the pig. Plate with 2 sides is $6.49 - portions are not large on this plate (though in line with the price, I think), and you get 3 hushpuppies (which are outstanding, as well). The quart I bought to take home was a little short of $16. This was our first try at the Pork Ribs (plate was $9.49) with 2 sides - outstanding value (just check around on pricing), great portion, super taste. Pit cooked over hardwood just like the barbecued pork, the ribs are falling off the bone tender, Smokey, with a very nice sauce that is tasty and not overly sweet. I would come back here just for the ribs, and I haven't found many places I'd say that about. The Collards were also exceptional - tender and slightly sweet - haven't had many better. The Mac & Cheese was also very nice - absolutely thick with cheese. The Banana Pudding (all dessert servings are $1.89) is loaded with vanilla wafers, a little less pudding than some, but tasty - and it was served warm. Nothing says home like good ol' country cooking and that's exactly what you get at the Backyard BBQ Pit! It's a humble little place that puts out mounds of delicious Southern cooking at great prices. The Backyard BBQ Pit has been on my bookmarks FOREVER but I'm rarely in that hood. At the intersection of 54/55, just head south about half a mile on 55 to find the place. It's an easy shot if you're headed to or from RDU airport. But yeah, the food! I had the beef brisket with a side of mac n cheese, and collard greens, great stuff. The brisket were several big hunks of hewn meat with a tasty red BBQ sauce, tender and delicious. The mac n cheese was serious greasy goodness with bread crumbs. And the hushpuppies on the side were great for finishing off the leftover gravy, well fried but a bit plain. No diets allowed here, just good eatin' Loved the place, the staff at Backyard BBQ Pit seems to have a lot of fun and care about their food and customers. For $10, you can't go wrong with a meal here. And while I love The Pit, I'll also love a place like Backyard BBQ. Formica tables, steam trays, magic marker graffiti on the wall and food served on styrofoam plates (yeah, not the greenest idea). In Raleigh for one night with only 1 BBQ lunch opportunity. Scoured Yelp for BBQ close by, looked at the Pit reviews and then decided I wanted old style, backyard smokehouse. Decided in Backyard BBQ Pit as it was highly rated and close by. I was definitely a happy BBQ camper! First a quick glance at the outdoor smokehouse behind the restaurant, this is the real deal and they had just finished a chicken smoke. The smell was amazing! In the restaurant I was greeted by a line of people, young and old, students, working people and definitely a local feel. The restaurant is old school Formica tables, counter ordering and a menu that was both handwritten with today's fish as well a fast food style Marquis. I had the feeling that I had walked into the Right place! I ordered the ribs, with sides of collard greens, mac and cheese and a few hush puppies., The ribs were succulent, meat fell off the bone, the BBQ sauce was perfect! The bones were soft from the 9 hours they spent in the backyard smokehouse! The sides were great. Mac and cheese was different with a good mix of cheese, macaroni and breadcrumbs, you have to have this side! The collars greens were good with a subtle vinegar and lemon taste, done right an made me feel that at least I had a vegetable with this wild and highly caloric meal. All in all, a great experience. I had a chat out back with one of the guys from the restaurant and he was terrific. We talked BBQ and future plans, watch out, these guys are gonna be big in the NC BBQ world! This restaurant is so laid back and the workers obviously are all good buddies with one another. Must try the bbq chicken and baby back ribs - such juicy meat that pulled apart so well and devoured easily. The sides were OK but the bbq was the ultimate best. They closed up around 6:30 (probably due to running out of food) and a worker offered us fried chicken!! Southern hospitality right there!! On any given day, you can drive by and be mesmerized by the aroma when you roll your window down. The food is amazing. It's not the healthiest but it's some kind of good. The parking situation stinks as 2/3's of the parking lot is dirt gravel so when it rains its nasty around the grounds. The location isn't bad as it sits off a main busy highway. The décor... my lord... let's just say "Don't let the looks fool you". You are liable to see anything in that place - chairs and tables that are broken, writing and graffiti on the walls, framed air condition wall units, handwritten menu's lol. Décor is NOT a concern at Backyard BUT the food is world renown. The service isn't bad, nothing to rave about but again... the barbeque is. My personal favorite is the 'Working Man' sandwich. Such a sweet find for LEGIT Carolina 'que! It pretty much goes without saying, but come HUNGRY. Having intense first visit FOMO yet also not wanting to walk out in a complete food coma, I sought balance...in the form of a beef brisket plate with collard greens, sweet potato and a half pound of pulled pork =D My first time experiencing Carolina pulled pork from the source was no joke - by far the best I've tasted! There's no dryness at all and the seasoning was done well enough to enjoy the glorious pork shoulder by itself. After trying it straight, be sure to douse it with NC vinegar-based BBQ sauce as the acidity cuts the fat perfectly. We can't forget about that brisket though! As tender as the best I've had yet with a welcome twist in that it's served homemade stock. While I prefer brisket straight from the smoker, this was nonetheless derricious. As for those sides, they were damn good! Delightful sweetness in the potatoes without being overwhelming and the collards still possessed good structure compared to the green mush that's found at many other spots. Dirty is right, but the food is tight. A solid eat that will fill you up. When we pulled up around 2pmish, the parking lot was empty. I was SO certain we drove all this way to the wrong "Backyard BBQ Pit," felt totally embarrassed, and was about to text the other car to tell them to turn around and figure out how to get to the "real" Backyard BBQ Pitt! Walking into the joint didn't do more to convince me, I surveyed the mess on the walls, the mess where the condiments were congregated, and didn't even want to imagine the mess we were about to eat. At this point I had my phone out and was ready to dial and apologize profusely for fumbling this one. But the cooks behind the counter immediately offered us a TRAY of samples of the food. Impressed by their hospitality-we stayed. Was it worth it? Like I said, it's a solid meal: you'll have some good, big pieces of meat and some good sides. It wasn't anything special or particularly amazing though-but that's coming from someone with a bias towards fairy food. I like my ribs a bit on the dry side like jerky, so if you're like me, you might find their ribs too goopy. Seemed like the guys in our group enjoyed themselves and were satisfied. And I have to say, the biggest mess was in the bathroom. So anyone who is a bit OCD: be forewarned. I probably wouldn't come back personally, but if everyone is saying this is the real Carolina BBQ, it might be worth a trip to experience it. read more

Food is great and affordable! If you decide to eat there, be wary - it seems really dirty (could also be the day I went, it was really hot and humid and had bugs coming after me) I tried the ribs and flounder along with sides of sweet potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The hush puppies come along with your dinner plate. The fish are fried fresh, ribs are juicy and seasoned really well. The portions are hearty. I'd recommend to come here and chow down. It gets busy and it is quite popular. read more
