I been visiting Hog Heaven for years. The experience has been deliciously consistent. It ain't a fancy place, but the food.....WOW!! GIMMIE SOME MORE!!! The service is friendly and courteous, and the ambiance is old school happenin'....it's a REAL place with REAL people! read more

Solid BBQ, good prices. Needed some Carolina BBQ for takeout and they had a nice family meal that was more than enough to feed four people. In fact, there were enough left overs for another round. Their service was quick, and the chopped pork was solid. The fried chicken was also good. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, and the coleslaw was not too watery. I definitely recommend them for feeding a crowd at an economical cost. read more

Good food service was good, hot, lots of seasons. Its mostly self service. Place was clean, friendly

I wanted to love this place but it just missed the mark for me. The food didn't have a lot of flavor--though their bbq sauce was good. The service was professional but nothing to write home about. It's a small place and didn't really seem to have an identity with decor, that's okay, as long as the food is great and I'm not sure if we went on an off day or what but the food was underwhelming. I hope to try it again at some point and have to update this with a better experience next time. read more

Bbq chicken was fresh and moist. Pulled pork was extremely fatty and difficult to eat. Reminded me of scrapple. Restaurant is bare bones and very plain. Staff were nice. read more

We have been reading tons of reviews for BBQ places around Durham as we were preparing to travel through. My husband and I both, despite being on the Gulf Coast where sweet, thick BBQ sauce reigns, were raised on good Carolina style with slaw. After all the reviews and other negative reviews and frustrations we decided to just find a close one on our journey north on 85. Several popped up, but we loved the raw, hole in the wall feel that screamed established and local favorite. Our order included a chicken breast, two pulled pork with slaw sandwiches, okra, granny's potatoes, and mac and cheese. The potatoes were on a recommendation. They were reds boiled in butter with onions it was good. I ordered it on a recommendation. It was a little rich for me, but it was good. It just isn't my style. Everything else was a 10. The food was fast. The staff was efficient. read more

Ordered food in the drive thru and waited 19 minutes for hush puppies. The food was slow coming out. This has happened before also.

We got fried pork chops & they were delicious.Crisp and tender.Service was fast order was accurate & the vegetables were very good.

First time here. Staff was super friendly. Food was OK. I got a pulled pork meal and a flounder sandwich. Pulled pork was fair, not a lot of flavor. Side of green beans were severely overcooked and not edible. Cole slaw was good. Flounder sandwich...more breading than flounder. Overall, nothing to write home about. I've had much better elsewhere. read more

We wanted to try bbq during our short visit to North Carolina and Hog Heaven definitely lives up to its name. Hog Heaven has a decent size parking lot, a drive-thru, and they accept cash/card. We shared a BBQ & Fried Chicken Combo with Baked Apples and Turnip Greens with an iced tea for $14.19 total and it was delicious. We asked for dark meat but accidentally received white meat by mistake (but it was so moist and flavorful especially for white meat). The barbecue was tangy, juicy, and incredibly soft. It had a unique seasoning that had a slight heat at the end. Turnip greens were savory and the baked apples were plump and cinnamon-y. Last but not least the iced tea was amazing -- getting a gallon is incredibly tempting. Next time we're in town we're going to try out their seafood options (the day we visited everyone was ordering fish so it made us curious). You have to visit this place! read more

Great food, timely service, do a good job with take out orders, large and small. My favorite BBQ in Durham and great vegetables. I pick up my father's lunch here every Saturday. The team also did a great job of providing food for our 6-person Christmas dinner. read more

Came here while visiting North Carolina - Friday at around 1pm. The line was not too long. Most of the people were getting food to-go. We decided to order the dinner which comes with 2 vegetables and hushpuppies (fried corn bread). I ordered a small pork bbq dinner with potato salad and the vegetable of the day, baked apples My boyfriend ordered a small pork bbq dinner with coleslaw and potato salad. We both got drinks (sweet tea). The pork bbq was flavorful and moist. Their bbq sauce is delicious. All of the vegetable sides were likewise delicious. I liked the baked apples and glad they offer it as a side of vegetable. The small dinner is (more than) enough for one person (good size portion). Prices reasonably. We ordered sweet tea for our drink and the sweetness is perfect. Service - Gentleman behind the order window/counter was nice and friendly. It took about 12 minutes from ordering until our number was called. Ambiance - well-lit, not loud; Spacious with plenty of tables. Located in a strip mall and no issues with parking. Definitely coming back the next time I visit NC and in the area. read more

BBQ is very good, I recommend if you are ever in the Durham area. I live in Charlotte.

Carolina BBQ here is the best I have had in years. We were passing through and Yelp reviews were encouraging so we stopped. This humble joint is right off of the highway and easy to find. Locals on their lunch break show up in force at noon. All of us got pork bbq. But locals were digging into fried fish and chicken a lot too. Sides were uniformly good. Service was friendly. Everything is on styrofoam plates. The pork comes with a little container of extra vinegar based sauce. No other sauce is offered because you don't need it. This is Carolina bbq with salty vinegar slightly spicy goodness you experience down to your toes. And the fried okra is clearly made fresh. We had to wait for it and it was HEAVEN. Okra is so misunderstood, but if you have it here you will be enlightened. If you are driving across NC, forget the chains and stop at Hog Heaven. read more

Grew up in Durham, parents still live in Durham and have eaten at places near Hog Heaven for years (Picnic, Bullock's, Byrd's, Backyard BBQ Pit). Never thought much about Hog Heaven until my brother was in town with his new girlfriend who wanted 'home style cooking'. Bullock's and Byrd's were closed, BBQ Pit wasn't near us and Picnic looked too 'fancy' so to Hog Heaven we went. The place is pretty dingy and the air wasn't working well so not the best ambiance but everyone was getting takeout anyways. Service was quick and the folks were nice enough. Ordered five plates, a pint of chicken and dumplings plus extra okra and it came out to about 70 bucks. Not bad at all. As to the food 1. BBQ tasted pretty smoky but almost in a 'we added liquid smoke way'. Not terribly off-putting but still odd. Not much vinegar taste but the sauce was tasty and added some oomph. 2. Fried chicken -- it was pretty cold and suffered from being in a styrofoam container for the 10 min drive back to my folks' house but was seasoned well. 3. Chicken and dumplings -- excellent. By far the best thing we had and alone worth a trip. Pastry wasn't gummy, had a great ratio of chicken to pastry and was seasoned perfectly. Reminded both my wife and I of our grandmas in eastern NC. 4. Sides were mostly just ok except for the turnips which were canned but seasoned well, the corn and Lima beans which were tasty and the fried okra which was super bland. Hush puppies were fantastic Will definitely be back for some chicken pastry! read more

This place was fantastic. Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q offers daily specials, and I had the good fortune to visit on a Tuesday, which happens to be rib day. I was in for a treat--the ribs were on point, tender, with a great rub that blended perfectly with the sauce. They were some of the best ribs I've ever had. If you find yourself not in the mood for the daily special, I highly recommend the fried pork chop. It may well have been the best pork chop I have ever tasted. The pork chop is pounded thin, breaded, and fried to perfection. The meat was glistening and incredibly flavorful. I almost stole the rest from my son, but he threatened to take a hand if I tried! As for the sides, the mac and cheese was great, and the potato salad was superb. This was my first trip to Durham, and I rather stumbled upon this place, but if I am ever in town again, I will be sure to visit Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q again. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy some top-notch barbecue in Durham! read more

I stopped in on a Tuesday night to get my bbq fix. This was my first time here so I didn't know what to expect. There were about 4 customers dining in. Right when you walk in, you are greeted with the smell of deep fried food. I warn you -- if you don't want to come out smelling like you've been battered and double deep fried, I advise you to order from the drive-thru window. I learned my lesson, now I know. The young lady taking my order wasn't too helpful. She had a bad attitude. Turns out that mashed potatoes were only served on certain days. The price point was pretty good for BBQ. I went with... Pulled Pork Plate (Large) with two sides. The pulled pork was delicious. It has a nice smoked flavor to it and was very juicy. The sauce was boss. It parked well with it. Fries: Typical fries and it was cold. Mac N Cheese: Nothing special, if you know what Mac N cheese taste like, I recommend you getting something else. Overall, if I want bbq again; I'll stop here for take out. For the price, it's a fantastic deal. read more

I went last week, and this place has changed. Food was good, but Covid (and maybe different ownership) has killed any vibe it ever had. Unfriendly cashier, no more table service, dining in with a take out tray. No condiments or napkins at all. Not a friendly face in there. I give it a 2 because the food wasn't bad, but the bombed out dining room is depressing. They should just close. read more

Banana Pudding- cookies were too crunchy as they had not yet absorbed the pudding which I think there could be more of. Real bananas present. Just for this item alone 4.5 stars but the rest are all 5 stars IMO. I liked the banana pudding better at Jimmy's Famous Hotdogs in Durham Highway 55 and I-40. Chicken and Dumplings- very good! Reminded me of my best batch I made one time. Mac & Cheese- creamy and cheesy. The texture was much better here than at Backyard Bbq on Highway 55 which seems to be 2 ingredients- cheddar and pasta but not creamy to bind it together like here. Hush puppies- wow! Really great. Reminded me of the nc state fair free samples at the old mill building. Fried okra- just great! Coleslaw- omg, I got this huge tub. I only could finish some of it. To me, since I love KFC coleslaw, it was a twin copy. Creamy and not overly sweet but just enough. Perfect! I would definitely return for a to go order. read more

Honestly, really terrible. Sweet people and not expensive, but the "BBQ" is prepackaged pulled pork from an institutional bulk food supplier. No flavor, no smoke, bad texture, lifeless and bland. Side were also less than ordinary. I'm told it's hard to find really good NC BBQ in Durham now... I can tell you this ain't it and keep looking. read more

this is some of the best BBQ in Durham!!! Try the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and hush puppies. Simple lunch for $10. read more

What can be said of this BBQ dive? It is cheap, marginally more expensive than a typical fast food restaurant. I'm left scratching my head as the food could be better for not much more effort or money. The restaurant has awards along the wall from years past, so the owners know how to cook. I would suggest the restaurant add slightly more red pepper spice to their BBQ chop and then give it a 4 minute smoke for flavor. The vinegar based sauce would improve without the sugar added. This place has potential. read more

It's all gone! Service = SHITE! (felt hated the second we arrived!). Everything served in take-out containers. 45 cents for extra barbecue sauce and the place was filthy! Another place bites the dust! Where's Della when we need her?!!! Good luck HH! You're gonna need it! read more

Great barbecue and other southern food at reasonable prices + a senior discount! It's the real deal.

The barbecue was just OK. They have ketchup from a pump dispenser that is simply horrid. A watery slur came out of the pump. Not really ketchup. The fountain Coke was horrible. The men's bathroom door was a filthy mess. The person taking my order couldn't have cared less about taking my order. read more

When I passed this place while running an errand in Durham today, I made a point of going back to eat there when I was finished, I wish I could tell you I liked this place, because I really wanted to, but it just wasn't all that great. Now the place looked great from the outside; a unfancy, plain, hole in the wall like many of your best "Q" joints. Then I noticed the total lack of the fragrance of BBQ being cooked, which made me wonder where the meat was actually being cooked. The folks in the kitchen and the take out area (I walked in to get an order to go) looked and acted like they were pissed off at having to be there. No smiles, no "thank you", no "you're welcome. Kind of a poor attitude. The food was so-so. The "Q" is not served "pulled" it is very finely chopped, almost minced. It's flavor was not bad, sort of peppery, and no options as to adding additional sauce. The Chicken and pastry had a good texture, but was way too salty. The "pulled pork" sandwich had a couple hush puppies on top, which was a nice touch, and they were pretty tasty. In short, the food was just ok and the poor attitude of the staff makes me think that this is not a place I would take out of town folkks to show them real old time NC BBQ. Today might have been an off day, but I wouldn't take a chance. I'd rather run up to Reidsville to Short Sugar's. read more

Five of us popped in to Hog Heaven for lunch on Monday. The BBQ and sauces were good but not spectacular. Our total bill was just under $50 but we didn't leave entirely full. I know that might sound odd and I can certainly afford to lose a few pounds, but I've never been to a BBQ place where I didn't have food left over. Although everything was ok, I will say that their hush puppies were great! Not a typical dish outside of a fish house, but they know what they are doing! One last shout out before I close. Their staff is very friendly and greet everyone who walks through the door like they are family. read more

This place was absolutely delicious we were planning on going to the barbecue restaurant called picnic. well it was closed on a Tuesday and so we saw this one and decided to check it out. The hush puppies were the best hush puppies I've ever had very light very crispy you could tell they were not frozen. You really can't call this place a BBQ joint because it is too nice and clean inside - functional, but nice. They serve some really good food, and not just the chopped pork. The place is small, but there are dozens of tables, fairly close together, so it can get noisy at times. You place your order and pay at the front window (they also hava a drive thru), fix yor drink at the fountain, grab a seat, and the food will be brought to you - and usually pretty quickly for most items - the fried seafood takes longer. The chopped pork is typical Eastern NC BBQ - tender, not over chopped, and lightly sauced out of the kitchen - a touch of the vinegar-based sauce adds some nice kick. This is above average Eastern BBQ, not in the very elite class, but close. The slaw is a a touch sweet, wetter than I care for, and has bits of carrot in it - tends to mask the good flavor of the pork. The small plate is $6.75, large $7.35 - each with 2 sides. The Rib Plate (on Tuesday) is large, filled with falling off the bone meat. The sauce is thick and definitely on the sweet side. You get 2 sides and hush puppies with the plate for $7.25. The Fried Chicken is crispy with plenty of salt and pepper seasoning, really nice. The Fried Okra and Pintos are very good. The Fries are the ridged kind and really don't have much flavor - I'd pass on them, better things are available here. They also have some fried seafood items - shrimp, flounder - but I've yet to try them. The service here is excellent , friendly and attentive. If you have a chance to try Hog Heaven, don't pass it up. read more
