We are visiting family in the area and had a craving for Mexican food so we have Azteca a shot. I had the Azteca burrito supreme, my husband had a combo meal with chili relleno and a tamale and my father in law had the avocado tostada. My husband usually orders a relleno to gauge the quality of the food and he was not disappointed. My burrito was fantastic and almost more than I could handle. It's nothing fancy but we left satisfied. Our server, Adrian, was very attentive and friendly. We contacted Oscar one week in advance with specific instructions on the time frame we needed the food delivered as we were feeding our employees in shifts. It was stressed on multiple times when the food needed to be delivered. Even the morning of the delivery, it was confirmed once again what time the food must be delivered. The Omaha search for our family Mexican "go to" place continued to Azteca recently, with my wife and I giving it a shot for a lunch date. After reading the reviews and getting an endorsement from a colleague whose wife is from Texas, I had high hopes for the experience. Upon being seated, we were brought a basket of chips with a bean dip of some sort, some salsa, and a unique dish that I could only describe as Mexican coleslaw. It was all good and the chips were fresh. The one thing that caught my eye was that chip and dip refills were $3 and as it turns out, a basket of chips alone is an additional $1.25. I know $1.25 is a small amount of money but something about that has always rubbed me the wrong way. Call me cheap if you will. But, it's not a deal breaker. I ordered a dish called pollo fundido, which was chicken, vegetables and cheese served on a bed of rice. The dish was good but it had broccoli in it. Listen, I am a Mexican food junkie and have eaten Mexican food all over the country and I have NEVER had broccoli in a Mexican food dish. It just isn't right. I like broccoli but not in my Mexican food. My wife had two crispy chicken tacos with rice and beans. I don't know if they let the tacos sit under the heat lamp or what happened but by the time they came to our table the taco shells were no longer crispy. The chicken was great but the mushy shells were a big no go for my wife. I think she'd try it again but we will make sure they know to bring them out hot and crispy. They do bring out some "sopapillas" to your table after the meal. Let's be clear here, these are NOT sopapillas. Repeat, NOT sopapillas. Sopapillas are fried dough, more like a donut. These are fried flour tortillas with some cinnamon and sugar thrown on them. If you enjoy them great but it's almost offensive to call these sopapillas. Our server was OK. She wasn't great and certainly not very friendly but I wouldn't call the service bad. Overall, this is average Mexican food, in my opinion. Probably fits into that Tex Mex category, which we love if done right, but this wasn't right enough for us. I don't know if I would go back but even if we do, it won't be that "go to" place. Not only do you get free chips and salsa here, you also get free bean dip and coleslaw! Mmm, beans, get in my mouth! The salsa was on the spicy side. The hubs got the chicken mole, on recommendation from a friend. He really enjoyed it and said he'd get it again. It was the perfect amount of sweet and came with two tortillas. The tortillas could've been fresher, but eh, they were still good. My cheese enchiladas also had a surprisingly sweet-ish sauce. It was like they swapped cinnamon for the cumin...I've never had anything like it before. It was good, but not what I was looking for. The kids meals had surprisingly tasty chicken fingers and fries (not that I would steal my kids' food...). We had sangria, and we way over-ordered. With the massive amount of food you get, there's not a whole lot of room left for booze! The servers were really pleasant, and they let the kids practice Spanish on them and gave my daughter a sword when she asked (you know, the thing that holds the fruit in your cocktail). They also offered vegetarian beans, and everyone got a free small sopapilla-ish dessert topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce. The dining room and bathrooms weren't nice by any stretch of the imagination. We'll definitely come back. Pros: Chicken mole. Free chips, salsa, bean dip, and coleslaw. Vegetarian beans. When I was first told that I was going to be dining at Azteca, I was skeptical. Azteca, really? Then I realized -- it's NOT the popular Azteca chain in my neck of the woods, but it's a family-owned Omaha entity basking in all of its hole-in-the-wall awesomeness. For around $4, I ordered a blended strawberry margarita and the chips with beans, salsa, and a spicy slaw. For my dinner -- I got the Chicken Mole, which was delicious as the chocolate came through so well that it was like eating candied meat. If Hershey's ever came out with a chocolate meat bar, it would taste like Chicken Mole and I'd be all over it. For dessert, instead of enjoying the complimentary sopapilla, I decided to get another strawberry margarita. All in all, I would say it was a successful trip outing to Azteca. read more

If you are looking for inexpensive mexican food in a cozy, warm environment with friendly service, then this is a great place to eat. The menu selection could use a few more items, but what they do offer tastes great. One of the best things about Azteca is that, before your entree arrives, you get chips, salsa, a small bowl of bean dip, and a very unique (yet tasty) cole slaw to put on your chips. My grandma in Texas used to make that exact mexican-style cole slaw, and it was nice to see it at a restaurant in Omaha. It is fairly obvious that this restaurant is family-owned. All the wait staff are friendly and for the most part, drinks are refilled quickly. Whether you dine here for lunch or dinner, the prices are very inexpensive. My favorite entree is the Chicken Carnitas. Of course, you get the standard offering of mexican rice and refried beans with each entree. Nothing on this menu is a bad choice, and you also get a complimentary "dessert," which is a cinnamon/sugar chip with whipped cream and strawberry drizzle on it (they call it a sopapilla) for each person at the table. read more

I've eaten at Azteca a few times in the past. Yesterday I was nearby so I stopped in and had lunch. Food was pretty good and consistent with what I remember (it's been a year or longer since I've eaten there). Then came the bill... I ate their taco plate special of the day and was shocked when the bill came - I don't remember it being so overpriced. After seeing the bill and weighing that against the quality of the food and service this will be the last time and last review of Azteca for me. This is an example of how looks can be deceiving. I drive by this place every day on my way to and from work and have never been motivated to try it. It appears very run down from the outside and is next to a fairly industrial area. However, my husband and I were looking for a new restaurant to try and, despite my skepticism, we decided to give Azteca a shot based on the many good reviews. I am really glad we did because the food was incredible. The inside of the restaurant is actually pretty consistent with the outside. Probably my biggest complaint about this restaurant is that it needs a major cosmetic overhaul. The carpet, walls, and booth are all really shabby and dingy. They did have one wall that was covered in glitter and celestial decorations which, while really cool looking, was also super random. Now on to what really matters: the food and drink. To drink, I ordered their margarita and my husband ordered the pina colada (he has a thing for "chick drinks"). The margarita was good but the pina colada was really good. The waitress spoke English well enough that she was able to effectively take our order, but she was unable to answer questions we had about the menu. We were feeling adventurous so we didn't really care, but I know this bothers some people. The service was overall good. We waited an appropriate time for drinks, our food, and the check and our waitress checked in on us several times throughout the meal. They serve complimentary chips, salsa, bean dip, and shredded cabbage. Cabbage is not something that is usually served with chips and dip but it made an awesome addition. The bean dip was very good and the salsa was a little on the spicy side. I found that if you mixed all three it cut down on the heat of the salsa and created a great combination of flavors and textures. For our entrees, my husband went with the Steak Chicana (sirloin strips sautéed in a Mexican tomato sauce and served with tortillas) and I went with the Chicken En Mole (skinless chicken thighs in a sweet and spicy peanut butter sauce with a hint of chocolate and served with tortillas). I felt like I was really taking a risk based on the description of the Chicken En Mole (peanut butter and chocolate sauce are not generally what I think of when I think of good Mexican food) but my curiosity won out. I figured it was either going to be crazy delicious or absolutely disgusting. Luckily it was crazy delicious. The flavor is hard to describe but it is one of those dishes where the flavor combinations are spot on and it was savory, sweet, and spicy all at the same time. I would highly recommend this dish as it is truly one of a kind. Both dishes are served with your choice of flour or corn tortillas which are served in little warmers. I went with the corn, which were good, and my husband went with the flour, which were a bit stale. For dessert, they serve complimentary one-chip sopapillas, which consist of a cinnamon-sugar tortilla chip drizzled with strawberry sauce and topped with whipped cream. It was the perfect way to end the meal. Our total with tip was right around $40 for two alcoholic drinks and two entrees, which really isn't a bad price. I've never been to Azteca when it wasn't busy, probably because it's a great value on a fun and pleasing dining experience. I love how there are complimentary appetizers, not just chips and salsa, but a few other dips as well. The dishes are well prepared and are very tasty. My eyes are usually bigger than my stomach, and I've learned to keep my ordering more in line with what I can devour. Nevertheless, I've yet to go away hungry. read more

Best Mexican appetizer award! I like this place. They serve good food at reasonable prices. They are friendly and the restaurant is comfortably casual. I can't say any of the entrées I've had are particularly memorable but what I can't forget is the appetizers that they bring out when you order. Warm tortilla chips with salsa, a piquant cabbage slaw, and a bean dip. The slaw is remarkable. Unusual but so savory with crisp green cabbage, cilantro and a hint of pickled jalapeño for heat. I want to take a bath in the bean dip - warm, slightly smoky, and creamy. Both are immensely craveable. I also recommend the house made sangria if it is available. This little spot at a big interchange has a friendly staff, excellent service, and a few twists to their food. I had the chiles colorado (beef). I was underwhelmed with this selection. The meat was tender but the flavor was just lacking. What would bring me back? Really different salsa that I loved. And their cabbage boat they serve with the salsa was what cole slaw should taste like. I asked for two more little dishes of it I loved it so much. Azteca is an interesting place. No, it's not flashy; the interior does not gleam with state-of-the-art lighting, or create an experiential context with rocks and fountains, or even quietly exude culture from a prime location. Fact is, the location is less than ideal for culture of any kind. Despite the location, you'll know you're in the right place when the complimentary trio of bean dip (the only bean dip I'll eat), salsa, and south of the border slaw arrive and really get your mind moving in the Azteca direction. When you finish your meal, a delightful (and also complimentary) plate of chips with whipped cream and berry sauce will reinforce the 'yum' from the meal. Azteca does several of the little things right -- but in a homey sort of way that shows a refreshing lack of stuffy pretense. Azteca is an interesting place. Granted, the menu has many items you will find in many 'Mexican-esque' eateries of questionable authenticity (yet of ubiquitous presence), but there are other things not as easily found. How about mushrooms in a cream sauce? How about authentic Aroz con Pollo? How about one of the best Pollo a la Parrilla dishes I've ever eaten? Take my advice on this one, don't order the same old same ol' that you get at all the brand X taquerías, they're decent at Azteca, and certainly not expensive, but you'll miss their best. Get the Pollo a la Parrilla, try the Aroz con Pollo, or sample one of the other dishes that you just can't get at the 'not quite a taco bell' places. Why do I keep bringing those two dishes up? Because after crisscrossing the United States, sampling dishes all over Mexico, and even eating at surprisingly authentic Mexican restaurants in Germany, these dishes are exactly right. You won't find them in a Michelin three star inn in the south of France, or the hip new bistro in New York's Lower East Side, or even in San Francisco's famous Mission District of this quality for this price. Sadly, though, Azteca's service can be uneven. Sometimes the service is a bit slow, and there are times when I sense a bit of a cultural gap between occasional ethnocentric Midwesterners and the staff. Though the service is on the slower side, but I've noticed that many of my favorite eateries are thus -- but this is likely because for me, the food is the thing, and I'll forgive the service lapse if they care about the quality of their fare. Azteca is moderately priced and unpretentious, but with food that is worth the trip. Pollo a la Parrilla at Azteca is one of my very favorite dishes to 'come home to.' Being from cali I think of myself as a Mexican food expert. With that being said, this is a very decent Mexican restaurant. Their chips and salsa are some of the best I have had in several states but not the best I have ever had period. Chili Verde burrito is on point altho the pork can sometimes be a bit tough, the flavor is still there. Carne Asada's could be better at times but still delivers what you expect from Carne asada. I know I seem negative but I actually recommend this place over any place in Omaha. The prices are good and the food is good. What more can you ask for in Nebraska? read more

Just finished dinner here. First the positives: friendly staff, seated immediately with chips, bean dip Mexican slaw and salsa. Excellent bean dip and not bad salsa. The slaw is a nice touch. Food came out very quickly and the prices were reasonable. Now the not so good: we both had enchilada plates and they were taco bell average. Not bad but not real good either. Took forever to get ice tea refills and more chips. The place was clean and they had lots of customers. I must admit I lived in the southwest most of my life so maybe my expectations are too high for this part of the country. No offense to Nebraska, a great state and Omaha, a nice city but maybe not the place for authentic Mexican food. read more

This place was so delicious! I got the small plater of tamal and enchilada! It was HUGE! I couldn't finish it all -- the food came out quick and super affordable. We love to have a big dinner at Azteca with a large party of folks. The cheese dip is creamy, the bean dip is flavorful, and the salsa is fresh. But the highlight of Azteca's pre-dinner appetizers is their Mexican coleslaw, spiced with little bits of jalapeno. Personally, I really like their chicken enchiladas, served with refried beans, rice and a small salad. My family members always clean their plates. A nice touch is the sopapilla chip that they serve for free at the end of the meal. This place is a great value. A table of 8 can get by with a lot of food for about $100. Seated promptly and service was good throughout. Food was good for all four of us....I would return again if based solely on the food. Was disappointed in the atmosphere... or lack thereof. Couldn't decide if it reminded me of an old Dennys, or a nursing home cafeteria. We are fans of Ixtapa (Bellevue) and La Mesa (Papillion), both of which have put some effort into their decor. We had eaten here in the past, thinking the food was really good. However, this weekend, we ordered take-out. I ordered the Azteca nachos with extra beans and without onions but with small amount of added jalapeños. I was extremely disappointed to get what appeared to be leftover, soggy nachos with no beans whatsoever, though it did have at least 1/2 cup of jalapeños piled on the top. They contained a few slices of hidden onion, which makes me think they couldn't remove all of them from the leftover nachos that they tried to pass off to me. Of course, I ate very few, after which I immediately became sick with vomiting. We will not be going to this restaurant ever again, and I plan on spreading the word among my friends so they can avoid similar situations. read more

I ordered a taco salad with chicken. You know how a taco salad usually has a lot of things in it? Maybe beans on the bottom, cheese, salsa, beef or chicken, lettuce, maybe some more cheese, tomato,... Etc.? This taco salad had the taco shell bowl, some plain cut up chicken in the bottom, just dry with no seasoning or anything, and some shredded lettuce on top. That was the whole thing. Dry cut up chicken, and some shredded lettuce. There was some sour cream and some guacamole on the side of the plate, but it was minimal, and couldn't dress the salad. I asked for some salsa, because something had to help the dry chicken that I was eating, and the waiter promptly brought me a bowl of some runny red sauce. I don't think you could really call it salsa. I know they are advertised as a family restaurant, but the place was a mess. There were chips all over the floor. ALL over the floor! I don't think just because you're a family restaurant, that you should not tidy up after a family leaves a table. Two items to note, however, that I thought were very nice. First, they bring a pitcher of water to your table and glasses with ice. Maybe that's so they don't have to keep returning to fill you up, but I appreciated it because I drink a lot of water, and hardly any restaurants can keep up with my refills. Secondly, unexpectedly at the end of our meal, the waiter shows up with a refreshing little dessert. Cinnamon sugar tortilla chips, one for each of us, with a dollop of whipped cream on top, and drizzled with strawberry sauce. It was perfect. It didn't require any utensils, no special plates, it was complementary, and it was delicious. But I couldn't make up for the dreadful taco salad, I'm afraid. read more
