Met up with a sweet friend to enjoy a fabulous sweet drink from Flora Cafe this morning. They've got what looks like a great spring menu for drinks, but I ordered my most favorite, Chai. Abuelita Chai to be exact and it was so warm and cozy, served in the cutest mug. Lots of room - and an upstairs with MORE tables and chairs - for large family gatherings, taking advantage of their FABULOUS eats menu (all available online), and people watch by the large windows! Parkings a little bit of bitch, but there IS the parking garage on the block south, as well as meter parking just on the south side of the street. I say give them a try! read more

The "great' features are: 1 Have great service 2 Have great food 3 Have a great theme The superior restaurants have all three. Many businesses get along by having just one "good" feature. This is my second time at Flora and it was such a letdown. Food was basic, but decent. The service, or better said lack of service was outrageous. I saw on their instagram page they were hosting a Mother's Day brunch with mariachi. It sounded like a perfect mother's day idea. I called to make a reservation and from the get go I just knew something was going to be wrong. The girl taking the reservation had minimal details on their event. It took about five minutes for her to get my 3 letter name right, L-I-Z and phone number. On Sunday my sister gets to the restaurant and tells them she is there for the 1230 Liz reservation. The host tells her they don't have that name and so they try to verify by phone number which they also they can't find. The host try's to call the number under the 1230 reservation and they get "this number is out of service". Finally they tell my sister they have a reservation for 8 but for "Liv" my sister looks at the number they have down and it's my Phone number but all jumbled they try calling it again and get the same message. My sister tells them again that has to be our reservation you just wrote down everything wrong. Well we get seated. I understand a restaurant is busy and there will be increase wait times on a holiday that never was a problem. Server came and took drink orders we ordered two kids meals at that time so their food could come out sooner than the rest since they were hungry. After about 25 minutes a table next to us asks us if we had ordered two kids quesadillas with rice and beans we said yes. The other customer said i think they delivered your order to us because they had ordered theirs with fries. No server was in sight for a while to report to so we handled it and since they hadn't touch the food we took it since the food was getting cold and the kids were extra hangry now. After our drinks were brought we never were checked on. No refills were ever done. We eventually get our food. The guy bringing our food had no customer service skills or initiative. He didn't even know how to say chicken in Spanish he said "polla". We had no chance to ask for things because he left immediately after setting food down. We needed water refilled , again our server never came so we ended up taking the water pitcher from a table that had left. Never in my life have I had to do that. We had missing silverware, needed salt, napkins and more drinks. I had to get up and go down to their first floor to get napkins myself. Our server finally decided to show her face once we were all done and had stacked our plates and she has the audacity to ask if we needed anything. Like girl !!! We needed 10 things about 20 min ago. I said no that we needed our check. We had a split tab so when I asked her if tip was included her immediate response was " oh yes it all included already since you are a large party" That's when I asked her I wanted the tip removed. I've Never in my life have had to do that. I was upset at this point and did tell the server that a tip is for service provided and she hadn't provided any. I listed all the things that happened . Her response was that she thought her other coworkers had check on us. I told her no one had ever checked on us, absolutely NO ONE. She said they were busy and things were getting out of control. My response was it's not that hard to check on a table for BASIC things. A restaurant establishment should be equipped for holiday business . It is very clear to me on both occasions that I have gone that their service needs MAJOR improvement. Like I told my server today I can guaranteed I can do a better job than you w/o any training because you don't need training to refill water or cover common sense requests. The table that was next to us was having similar issues . Majority of their waiters lack customer service skills, initiative and hustle. As we say they need to "ponerse las pilas". Their body language alone speaks volumes. They all look like they need an energy shot or something. This put a damper on my Mother's Day. I left stressed and disappointed. read more

Chilaquiles is one of my favorite brunch dishes, and so I have been on a hunt for a good spot in Omaha that coats their chips just in the right amount of sauce. Flora nails the texture - it's not just a random pile of chips with sauce drizzled on top. These are properly tossed so each bite is flavorful and soft, with just a little bit of crunch remaining. If you face some slight indecision, never fear - you can opt for both red & green sauce on the plate, and they also have a combo protein option of steak + chorizo (campechana). Navigating / parking here can be a bit tough with all the streetcar construction, but don't let that stop you! It's a great brunch stop before or after exploring Old Market & the Riverfront. read more

Also had the opportunity to try out the horchata matcha drink and it was great! The restaurant had two floors with the 2nd floor being space for overflow. The decoration and atmosphere of the place was cozy and casual. Our food took a while for them to prepare and bring it to us, but I'm willing to overlook that since the food was great. There was a clash between food quality and experience at this weekend's lunch, as an unmotivated, unfocused pair of staff members diluted a terrific dining experience. Located at the edge of the Old Market, it's aided by an adjacent paid parking lot and has a nice interior. Specializing in Mexican food, they have a large menu, and the recommendation we received to eat there was spot on. Our server was terrific, kind, and professional. But we witnessed a pair of staff members effectively check out and spend about 20 minutes casually eating their lunch and assembling silverware while the restaurant was crowded. Their lack of contribution bogged down the experience, slowing everything to an inexcusable halt. We did not receive our chips and salsa, and it took a while to get our drink and have our order taken due to the overall energy level. Our entrees were outstanding - that was the only reason I gave this place three stars. I hope their staff takes more pride in their roles, and treats their customers with the level of service and energy deserving of people who visit. read more

what an incredible spot!! Not only is it absolutely beautiful but everything they have seems to only get raving reviews! I really hope more and more people find out about this gorgeous little spot and keep it busy! They have a stunning patio with greenery and stringed lights that make it feel like you're hidden in a new york nook. Everyone is so friendly and they really take their time to make your food/drink so that it is just right. My sister got the banana bread latte and it was DELICIOUS! We really loved coming out here for National Margarita day! We started with a half corn half flour basket of chips and salsa. I loved the flour and my wife loved the corn. The salsa was very flavorful and I wish we had more but the chips were also very filling! I had a giant taco, and I didn't expect it to be so large but it was AMAZING!!! I was able to take half home and I'm usually someone that's able to finish the whole meal. Finally tried out this new place for brunch! Got seated right away and service was great. Tried the banana bread latte which was quite good! It has fresh banana chunks in it and lots of cinnamon- yum! It was a tad too sweet for me but otherwise solid. Also tried the breakfast burrito and skillet which were both very flavorful. Flora Cafe serves delicious authentic Mexican and a cute girly ambience that is perfect for a beautiful brunch vibe! The interior is gorgeous, and every detail adds to the experience, down to the tazas de barro and lush greenery. The restaurant has lots of natural lighting from all angles, and plentiful seating. Every time I am here, there is a wait time, so I would recommend calling ahead for a reservation, especially on weekends. It can be a little uncomfortable waiting as they have no central seating for guests, and you can't necessarily walk outside in the meantime since there isn't a text "waitlist" that I know of. The wait however, is worth it. The food is delicious and servings are large! I love their coffee menu, and their Horchata latte was delicious! I got it iced, and it was the absolute best. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes and the serving was huge, enough that I was able to eat the rest for dinner. The menu is plentiful and full of variety, whether you're leaning towards more of a breakfast or a lunch vibe. This place is so cute! I hate that the current construction is so close to it - but still found great parking on a Saturday downtown! I got the flautas - and they were delicious! Located right next to the Gene Leahy mall this is a popping spot and even have some outdoor seating options. They are still open with all of the construction and not hard to get to! (parking is going to take some patience). First time checking this spot out and the vibes are CUTEEE! I'm excited to try out breakfast here. I couldn't find a menu online but it looked like pumpkin pancakes (at a Mexican joint?! I'm in!). They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and have a cafe for all your coffee needs. Most of the entrees are probably 1-2 servings so come hungry or be ready for leftovers. Vegetarians, they have a few options without meat or you can ask for a lot of items without meat. I got the giant burrito minus the meat and it was HUGE! The star of the show was the chips and salsa. You can get corn, flour, or a mix of both. I'm a big fan of their flour tortillas. Great food and drinks! We came on Sunday for national margarita day. I saw on their socials they had a special, $8.99 for a margarita flight. It was so worth making the trek downtown! I could choose from any of their margarita flavors, so I chose Jamaica (hibiscus), mango, strawberry, and their house lime all with salt rims and lime wedges. The lime was my fave! I opted to get the birria tacos and was SO glad I did! They're everything I was expecting of birria, plenty of cheese and a great consommé. We also ordered chips and salsa to start, mixed flour and corn chips. I preferred the corn, but they were kind of hard. The salsa was incredible, plenty of chunks of fresh tomatoes and peppers, it was nice and spicy! We also ordered a couple cantaritos, which I can't wait to have again. They were fresh, authentic, and I loved the gorgeous mug gave me concha vibes. The only bummer was the service was pretty slow. They were about half full, so I wasn't sure why it was so slow. It didn't mess up the experience for me, but it did for my husband. We had to wait probably 15 minutes or so for our margaritas, and she forgot to bring our water until after we got our food. Don't let the streetcar construction out front keep you from visiting Flora Portions were generous, flavors were luscious and layered, and service was attentive at this new restaurant across the street from Leahy mall. We enjoyed the chips and queso, fundido, chimichanga and barria tacos. The bar is stocked mostly for margaritas, which is not unreasonable. I just visited Florida Café for the first time and loved it! The people who know me, know that you chilaquiles are my favorite breakfast meal. I was so excited to see them in their menu so I had to order them. My expectations were high and Flora Cafe delivered! I have lived in Texas and California my whole life. But my meal here was so good, it made me forget how far Omaha is from the border! The quesabirria tacos were wonderful. Birria is like a Mexican pot roast. You separate the broth after cooking the meat and serve it on the side as a consume to dip your tacos in. And to ensure that your tacos can stand to up being dipped, you pan fry them in the beef fat you skim off the broth. These were generously filled with birria and queso with onions and cilantro. And in addition to the consume, they come with a mild red salsa and a medium-spicy green salsa that I really enjoyed. My waitress was so personable and treated everyone like family. She also brought extra napkins unprompted, as well as a pitcher of ice water (it was a hot day). The place is new. Shiny and clean. With Mexican music on in the background. They also have amazing lattes and even an Abuelita chai - a cross between an Indian Chai and that iconic Mexican cocoa. It's not a big menu and I only tried the quesabirria and the chai, but I was impressed -- and very full! read more

What a great remodel to this space! My husband and I had many of our first dates at the former business, Matsu Sushi, and it was fun to see so many delightful design changes. I came in kind of last minute on a date with my kids after a show at the Rose Theatre. And man, I am so glad we took this little detour! I LOVE chillaquiles and have struggled to find a really perfect dish in Omaha, but it has been waiting for me at Flora cafe! It was seriously so good - flavorful and spicy, all the textures were right, generous portion sizes..truly I can't wait to return for it! My kids decided to try some tacos and a French toast dish that they also REALLY enjoyed. The service was attentive, the meals were so, so good and the atmosphere was so fun and uplifting. I was really not impressed with this restaurant. I ordered the taco arriero. I had never had this before, but the description sounded good. With the cabbage and cilantro, sounded like it would have nice flavors. Unfortunately, the taco was huge; lots of meat and beans and no fresh flavors. It was served in a thick corn tortilla. This was too big and messy to pick up - and that's fine - but also I just could make much progress stabbing at it with my cardstock-thin fork. A knife would have been nice. And where is the salsa? I asked our server, she seemed quite confused by this request; eventually she came back with two tiny containers. Like a Tablespoon each. The taco came with a side of two fried tostadas. Yes, just the shell. I don't even know what to do with this. Everything bland, hard, and greasy. My husband got the chimichanga and he was happy with it. I took a bite and was not impressed at all. I know that the construction for the streetcar is hurting the businesses along the route. But, to stay in business, a place has to give customers a reason to come back. This is my new favorite addition to Omaha, I have been recommending it to everyone! I don't usually like Mexican food, but the flavors from these dishes opened my eyes! I tried the breakfast burrito with the chorizo, which was a bit spicy. The flavor was absolutely amazing, they also gave me a side of salsa to put on top and it really completed the flavor. Flora was such a great find! I had the Queso Birria Tacos and they were perfectly crunchy, flavorful, and just the right amount of food. We also shared chips and guacamole -- super fresh and tasty. The margaritas were strong but still delicious, and the Albuelita Chai absolutely lived up to the hype! There's plenty of indoor seating and a nice patio area that would be great on a nice day. My only small complaint was that the tables were a bit tight, but it didn't take away from how much we enjoyed the meal. Overall, loved this place and will definitely be back! read more

This was my first dinner while in Omaha for work. I wasn't sure they were open because the entire road in front of them is under construction, but they were actually open. No one was in the restaurant when I walked in, but before I left, they were four other tables occupied. I think they were training a new server because I wasn't ready to order the first time they came to the table and then it took a while for someone to come back and take my order. I ended up trying the adobada quesadilla. It comes with rice and beans or you can have french fries. I got rice and beans, but they were both ice cold. Numerous servers just standing around talking and I asked for water about 3 times the 4th time I asked I finally got it but that was once we were already done eating. We were only checked up on once and also once we were done waiting to pay like I said no one came to check up on us while all the ladies were just talking amongst each other and ignoring us 10-15 mins after we were done eating then we finally got someone to come and ask if we were ready to pay. Great new addition to downtown, which has little to no breakfast options! They are actually open though for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, we went for lunch! There was 1 server for the entire restaurant the day we went, I felt so bad she was hustling non stop, and it was pretty full when we walked in, the entire 1.5 hours we were there, and when we left! Which is definitely deserved because the food was so so good! I don't typically order Birra Tacos, but for some reason it was calling my name and they were amazing, the shells, the meat, the consommé, put together perfectly! My cousin loved her burrito that was the size of a small baby, she had to take half of it home! Very limited menu and not accommodating for modifications with sauces for menu items. Ordered the house pomegranate margarita...hands down the worst margarita I've ever had. It was basically like drinking kool aid; they don't even use real pomegranate juice. You pay extra to get chips and salsa. I'm sure there has to be better options in Omaha. read more
