Legends Cafe is in a really cool historical space. At first I thought it was part of the Legends chain that has a location in Omaha, but once inside it appears to be a mom and pop type operation, closing at 1:00 pm. It wasn't busy at lunch, just a few tables and booths filled. The black and white checkered floor tiles, high-walled wooden booths, colorful tables, and brick walls give the small space an old timey vibe. Breakfast is served until closing and the lunch menu starts at 11. This day I had a patty melt and my friend had a western omelette. My patty melt was as expected and not huge, but just right. It came with potato chips but could have been upgraded to French fries or onion rings for an extra charge. I ended up taking half of it home. My friend's omelette came with hash browns and toast. The menu says you can order 1/4 or 1/2 an order of hash browns, but I don't think she did that because there were a lot of potatoes. It was a quiet and peaceful lunch, just regular everyday food, cooked well. We didn't leave room for dessert, but it might be a good idea just to come in for coffee and pie. read more

After hearing about this breakfast spot repeatedly, my husband and I drove from Omaha, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa to give it a try. Feedback in just a few bullet points: 1. Very small, limited number of tables. 2. The wait staff was very disheveled and terribly unorganized and unprofessional. We witnessed a waitress rip a group full of young kids - new one because they were all trying to talk at once. 3. We ordered eggs over medium and received eggs that were sunny side up. 4. The bacon was cold, and greasy. 5. The cinnamon rolls are as big as a dinner plate! If you don't want it cold, make sure you let the wait staff know that when ordering. I learned the hard way! 6. The restaurant could definitely use a good cleaning! The floors were filthy and so was our table. The waitress acknowledged their mistake on the eggs and the cinnamon roll and offered to reduce our bill, which we agreed to. If you want a mediocre breakfast and you don't care much about quality or customer service, this might be the place you are looking king for! read more

Legends Cafe in Council Bluffs was recommended to us when we visited the Iowa side of the Missouri -- and that proved to be an excellent recommendation! The food was delicious, the service was friendly and efficient, and the decor was interesting. The daily breakfast specials looked intriguing and they were still available for lunch at 1:00 pm. My wife chose the Eggs Benedict and I picked the Dunkin Griddle -- with Hash Browns added for each special. We were equally pleased with the taste, quality, and quantity of food. I have heard about this place and read the rave reviews and I think I expected too much. The biscuits were tough and had a very unpleasant texture, the gravy tasted canned and bland. The hash browns were passable. The one bright spot was the pancake, it was the only freshly made item and it was excellent. The service was fine and she was polite, but she seemed very surprised when she asked me if I liked it and I told her the pancake was good but I was not a fan of the rest. She asked me what I didn't like and I told her the biscuits seemed reheated and the gravy had no flavor. She said the biscuits were not home made and I rather rudely said that was obvious, if she reads this I apologize, I should not have said that. It was not horrible, I did eat most of everything. I was a bit upset with myself, why in the world did it take me so long to swing into this amazing place? It is not flashy or fancy, it is a very basic layout, the music is low and good. The servers this day were frickin' amazing. Two of them handled the floor and I am pretty sure the cook brought out the pecan roll and the pancakes too. My ice tea was always full. To start we got a huge pecan roll that was warm and beautiful. A generous pile of butter. IT was amazing. No lack of flavor here. We ordered the country fried steak, it is seasoned and fried to perfection and smothered in a brown tasty gravy. I went with an omelet of the western kind with hashbrowns and sour dough toast. The omelet was chock full of peppers, onions and ham too. The cheese made it even better. For some reason we wanted a malt. Of course the server obliged, and a chocolate malt appeared. We stopped here on a whim. Service was quick, waitress was super nice. I ordered loaded hash browns with a side of link sausage. My husband ordered his biscuits and gravy with two eggs over easy on top with a side of link sausage. He said the gravy was very flavorful, biscuits were about perfect. My hash browns were nice and crispy. I enjoyed the American cheese and onions on top. My husband said we will have to come back and try out some different items. Very cute little place. This place is amazing. They had the best pancakes I have ever had. So fluffy and good. But the cinnamon french toast was a surprise and truth be told, I'm not sure which one was better. Also, the eggs were cooked to perfection. We cannot say enough about the food and believe it is such a good value for the prices, which were so reasonable. As good as the food was, the service was better. Our waitress was so nice and it seemed like all of the staff helped each other. We never had to ask for a refill and they were so observant about what we may need. We travel a lot and went to Iowa as one of the last 50 states on our list. My husband claims he just had the best omelette of his life. We're from South Sioux City, NE and were in Omaha for some medial stuff and I was STARVING when I was done. I'm sick of Village Inns, so I Yelped 'diner near me' and wow, did I find a diner for the books! I didn't need my two pancakes; they're the size of the plates! I was a teeny bit disappointed in my bacon...they were a bit black. Basically crumbled in my fingers. But the pancakes were perfect. I've never taken a box home for pancakes before, but I didn't want to leave my second one behind. Husband got a meaty omelette, add mushrooms, a full hash brown, and toast. He said it was perfect. A LOT of food. And for the price, we're coming back every time. Coffee was fantastic. The bathrooms are in the hallway of the building. Tiny, dive diner. Are you hungry for breakfast?? This place has the most generous portions. My breakfast will also be my lunch as I needed a box and probably a walk. If you are in or near Council Bluffs this is a great place to get a fantastic breakfast without all the frills. They have lunch too and expect that would be just as good. You can tell their griddle is very primed the way these hash browns came out. When the waitress offered options for hash browns (full/half/quarter), tha should have been my first clue. They were so buttery and crispy. All meat omelette had a ton of meat. They do put a slice of cheese in the middle of the omelette which is unique but if you are not a big cheese fan you might want to ask to leave it out. I love cheese! Probably more like a 3 1/2 stars but a 4 stands for "good" so that's what I'm going with! Cool older building this cafe is in. The brick walls adds to the feel of the decor. Knowing their portions are huge my dining partner and I split an entree and ordered some additional sides. Ordered the western omelette with extra cheese. The ham, peppers and onions looked fresh but definitely off on the seasoning. Had very little flavor but some shakes of salt definitely helped. Ordered some salsa on the side which added to the flavor of the omelette. The hashbrowns looked great! Someone had mentioned that their hashbrowns were similar to my favorite greasy spoon diner downtown Omaha that is no longer open. :-( Upon digging in they definitely were not. While the outside of the hash browns were VERY crispy, the inside was mushy. And again...very bland. Had to add several shakes of salt which just didn't help much when they are not seasoned as they are cooking. Bacon was thin and crisp...tasty! Side of biscuits and gravy came out room temp but were good. Different though as it appears they slice sausage and add to the gravy vs using ground sausage. And you just grab an open spot which means if all the coveted booths are occupied, you join strangers at a long table. We stopped in for a nice Saturday breakfast. The place was clean and the service was great. Fast and friendly. The food though, It was just okay. I tried the Charlie. Came with eggs, bacon and biscuits and gravy. The biscuits weren't very good and the gravy needs some flavor. Hash browns were alright. I did try a slice of blue berry French toast. That was pretty good! Definitely would order those next time. My wife got the mcduncan sandwich on a bagel. Think they forgot to toast it. But it was busy so that'll happen. The bacon came extra crispy. (Think eating glass) The egg was just right! My daughter got a biscuit and gravy and was the strangest color ever. It was brown, like dark brown, and tasted like it had a lot of sausage seasonings, sage and thyme?, in the gravy. It also had sliced sausage links in the gravy. Like I said, different, but not great. Sue and I did Legends Thurs after my P/T. About 9:45 and place was humming. Service was great and friendly. Seemed like many servers because we had one for water and coffee, one for order, one to deliver food and one to refill coffee. That's OK. Hmmmm.....where does the tip go? Sue ordered 1 egg, 1/2 order of hash browns (which was still too big), link sausage and toast. She said ws real good. I had small skillet with patty sausage and sourdough bread (delish). Had lots of onions, peppers, cheese, my favrorite. Still too much for me. Very good. Went to counter (and I saw this sign and forgot about it), and she said was a little over $13 with your discount. "Seniors over 65 get 10% discount". Neat feature. Can't want to go again and maybe try an omelet. read more

I really like Legend's food but I really hate trying to dine in because it is always so slam packed and you will most likely have to wait (especially on weekends) and you absolutely will get stared at by most of the other patrons when you walk in the door, but only because the inside of the restaurant is lower than the door is. You are walking in on a platform. You have to walk down a couple of steps to get the the floor with everyone else. So you get stared at by everyone sitting at the tables. Like I said, it's usually super busy so we usually just call the order in to go and pick it up rather than attempting to dine in. Don't let this dissuade you. It's well worth ordering because the food is really good and it's always fresh. The portion sizes are quite generous. I'm serious, consider yourself warned, especially when it comes to the hash browns. They do have various size options and if you order a large, you will be eating hash browns for the next 4 days which is fine with me because I love them. They also close at 2 which is a bit of a bummer because there are so many days that we would order from them for dinner! read more

Great, local breakfast spot. The hash browns are my favorite here - crispy on the inside and cooked all the way through. Try the chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, or an omelette. The homemade cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls (TONS of pecans) are huge and out of this world! I don't have a picture because we always eat them too fast, but there's plenty on their Facebook if you're curious. The portions are huge and prices are cheap. The first thing I have to say is that when you order an omelet and they ask you if you want a full order of hash browns, what they're really asking you is, "do you want an order of hash browns the size of your plate?" If not, get the half order. The hash browns were wonderfully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, but like the omelet, were a bit lacking in seasonings. The omelets were loaded with veggies and the lack of extra seasoning was nothing their homemade salsa couldn't take care of. Now operating as Legend's cafe, due to a change in ownership, have no fear - the same cook is in the kitchen, the menu is the same and the wait staff all remained. The sign over the back parking lot still says Duncan's so don't spend time worrying. All breakfasts here are excellent, I am partial to biscuits and gravy (not on the menu) with a side of hash browns and the chicken fried steak (comes with 2 eggs, toast and hash browns) and the omelets are delicious.
