What was so sad was the rave reviews, and stellar experiences listed had my expectations through the roof! The matcha tasted like close to nothing, more like a sweet milk. So the old owner has sold the business to Haley and she is doing a great job, there is now food while pastries coffee still amazing, ambience is outstanding. There's no place like at Omaha with original bar and everything. It's still a great experience. Kraig is missed, but Haley is doing a stellar job. We stopped at Howling Hounds in Omaha, Nebraska on our road trip from California to Minnesota, and it ended up being one of our favorite surprises of the trip. The new owner--she's had the shop for about six months--was incredibly personable, and we loved hearing her story. Even better, her brother bakes all the pastries she sells, which gave everything such a special, homemade touch. The coffee was outstanding. We're big fans of bold, flavorful brews, and hers was absolutely perfect--rich, smooth, and exactly what we needed to keep us going. A wonderful little stop with great people and great coffee. The oat milk latte is good, it's flavorful, the beans are good. They use Sumatra beans. The 11AM military siren went off for an entire minute. Nice convenient hooks under the bar top. I wasn't familiar with this place at all, but Yelp suggested it to me. The reviews were so enthusiastic regarding the coffee and the friendliness of the owner. Remarkably so. Today, I was out on a walk and not really thinking about coffee, but since I happened to walk by I decided to try the door (there really isn't any indication outside that it is even open). It was open, the owner was attentive to the two customers that were in there. I can confirm that he really is as nice as all the reviews said! We chatted for a bit, and I learned that he eventually plans to close the business, of course. He doesn't have a timeline for it but said that one day, he just won't unlock the door. Well, I decided I better not wait to sample the coffee, since who knows if I will have another chance? So I got a cold brew, with cream. What an inteeeeresting place cause it's right outside the Department of Corrections LOL. We stopped in for a quick cup of coffee before leaving the city and am really glad we did. I didn't catch the guy behind the bar's name, but he was super super friendly and chatted with us the whole time while making my latte (which came out beautifully as you see in the photo). I told him we were on a roadtrip heading home to California and he even gave coffee suggestions en route! Was passing through Omaha en route to Ft. Collins, CO and stopped in for coffee this morning. It was so worth the slight detour -- and it would've been worth a much longer one. Right out of the gate, this place has great coffee. I got one of the top 3 lattes of my life here - complete with art. The owner/barista takes serious pride in the product -- and also mentioned he does a triple shot for a single. Bless this man. But in addition to the coffee, the aesthetics of the place are great. The walls have a variety of cool art (some you can buy). It's in an old hotel with a tin ceiling and exposed brick walls. And the coffee bar itself is gorgeous. And lastly, the service is spectacular and friendly. The other patrons were also really great. Prices were awesome for the quality of coffee. This is absolutely a spot that if I'm within an hour, I'll go out of my way to return. read more

Just came for a simple cup of coffee, but Greg's awesome customer service and kind manner would make me a regular if I lived in Omaha! The 16oz black coffee was $4 and he made a fresh pot for me because he didn't want to give me a stale cup and he tries not to be wasteful. His to-go cup was compostable as well, so you can tell he is mindful of his impact. My black coffee was delicious, no bitterness and a great flavor profile. The inside is made up of long countertops, and there is a small menu on the wall. I can't recommend enough! There is a parking lot to the left of the entrance if you're not walking from a nearby business or hotel. read more

By far one of the best coffee shops I have been to. Greg, the owner, will not only provide you with a killer cup of coffee, but a killer conversation as well. As soon as I walked in, the shop was filled with people at the bar enjoying themselves and talking to each other. I was frankly shocked (in the best way possible) to see how everyone was socializing and enjoying themselves. It's obvious that Greg has a passion for his business and his city, and he could've served me a steaming cup of garbage and I probably would have enjoyed it because the place was so great. Holy bananas! Feel so lucky to have discovered this quaint little shop on a short trip to Omaha for one of our dear friend's wedding. Had one of the BEST lattes, if not the actual best, I've ever tasted in my life! No sugar or syrup/flavor needed. Cross my heart, on my scouts honor! The beans here are roasted to perfection and sourced so well. I'm blown away at how smooth the coffee is. When I say perfect, I mean perfect...all you taste is the true flavor of coffee and all the subtle hints and notes of bright fruity complexity, balance and essence that are roasted in. No acid, no overwhelming bitterness. Just really awesome cafe!!!! Thank the heavens we snagged a bag of beans because now I get to enjoy rich and smooth cups of coffee until it runs out (super sad face). Will need to see if they ship to CA! I've been to Howlin Hounds twice now and there are several things to love about it. The first visit I went with the French Press and enjoyed it a lot. I'm a huge fan of coffee shops that take pride in their brewing methods when offering pour overs and French press, and HH offers both! This most recent visit I started with a Vanilla Latte, and followed it up with a black brewed coffee. The latte was excellent! It wasn't overwhelming with vanilla sweetness and had just enough flavor get it past the milk-only latte flavor. And the latte art was a great touch and very well done! One of the best parts about this place is the owner and operator, Greg Sechser, who is one of the friendliest and most outgoing baristas in the state! He really makes this place amazing, so be sure to sit at the bar (which happens to be an old saloon style bar, and it's spectacular!) and talk with him while enjoying your drinks. Other things to love: The art wall - Greg displays local art on the large wall opposite the bar, which they are always looking to showcase. Italian sodas - Always amazing! Book wall and large mural - A great touch to the adjacent seating room. Overall, an amazing place with great coffee and fantastic touches that really add to the atmosphere!
