My wife needed a pancake, Waitress asked, full size or small. She went with the small which was a good move as it was larger than most and almost covered the plate. on the pancake. She also had 1/2 ham, egg, cheese scramble over delicious hash browns. I had the sausage, cheese and mushroom with full size hash browns. I didn't want kc d size food. Should've got 1/2 size. . Goodness. On my way through on business, stopped for breakfast. Reasonably priced, classic diner breakfast, well executed (had the chicken fried steak with eggs, toast, and hash browns). Pro tip, unless you are a ravenous teen or actually work for a living, stick with the 1/4 order of hash browns. I prevailed over the half order, but just barely. What a stroke of luck that we stumbled across this local hang out. If you are looking for glitzy and swank, this is not the place....but if you are looking for a good, hardy breakfast with a friendly staff, you are in the right place. The servings are huge. It's true, Duncan's Cafe is probably one of the few establishments left in the United States that offers a grilled cheese sandwich and fries for only $4.35. I visited the restaurant with my family before heading back to Los Angeles in December. The last time I had visited was when a friend and her family took me for sandwiches and fries in the 6th grade (I am indeed a Council Bluffs native). The service was a bit slow (Dad got a little impatient), but I knew the wait would be worth it. And though Duncan's does not serve up real mashed potatoes (was I naive to ask?), the fries were delicious, and the grilled cheese - the way a grilled cheese should be. Everybody seemed satisfied. The portions were sizable, the value was good, and the atmosphere was comfortable. This joint will not blow your mind or knock your socks off, as the ambience is a far cry from fancy. But if you're looking for an affordable, down-home place to grab a bite, bring your appetite, a friend, and order up a cup of coffee and simply enjoy the true feel of the Midwest. This is my 3rd time eating breakfast here and it's stellar! That goes for the food AND service. Nestled in a historic part of downtown Council Bluffs, Duncan's has a nice local feel to it but inviting enough if you're not from CB (like me). When you walk in, you seat yourself. There are many booths as well as large rectangular tables (seats 8) and smaller tables (seats 4). Various paintings (I believe from local artists) adorn the walls. A large wooden clock that says "Duncan's Cafe" is on the wall just above the kitchen window. It's a bustling place and the wait staff is very attentive; making sure your coffee mug is never empty and your water glass is always full. In my opinion service, especially these days, goes a long way. I ordered 2 eggs, bacon and toast; eggs basted and the toast dry. Old school grape or strawberry jelly served in small single serving sized containers on the plate. Also, I ordered the hash browns - half order as strongly recommended by the waitress. This is an excellent 40 year old family run restaurant. The food is purely middle American home style cooking. The portions are huge, the prices are very reasonable. I had a large BBQ pork sandwich with chips, cole slaw and baked beans for $6.50. The pork was done correctly....not over or undercooked, the sauce was tasty, on the sweet side but not spicy. The beans were very tasty and also on the sweet side. The cole slaw was excellent...and you guessed it....was on the sweet side. My husband and I walked in and everyone stared at us. These really old folks and tried not to hide it. My husband and I are interracial couple and it was incredibly uncomfortable. We were not greeted at the door even though everyone else was. A server walked by us and under her breath said something shaking her head looking at us. Right as I arrived, I smiled a bit because I noted a couple of things: -Much like Clark R. forwarned, it was VERY much like an AARP meeting, even on the monday morning I stopped in -There was only one waitress (who did a very good job) As far as the food goes, my hashbrowns were simply AMAZING, and I am something of a connoisseur in regards to hashbrowns. Besides that, the rest of the food was good, and I didn't feel to bad walking away only paying a bit over five bucks. I'd recommend stopping in if you want a cheap, simple breakfast. Great find just driving down the street trying to find the post office lol! My mother had to have the cinnamon roll and it was huge, she loved that it came with warm frosting poured on top. Ate breakfast next to a very nice policeman and older gentleman, was nice to be around friendly people in my hometown considering I haven't been back in over 15 years and moved away when I was 4 (30+ years ago). My mother also loved the rye toast with her eggs, not Jewish style rye like we always see in Ca! Real swirl rye. My skillet was huge I'm not a fan of fake cheese singles/slices I real cheese, but I enjoyed my meal and have been to a ton of places that I watch on tv/food network shows I would totally expect this place to be on there soon if it hasn't already. I wanted to try Duncan's for sometime and since I had a friend coming into town I needed to wine and dine, I thought I would check it out in advance on a weekday am, in theory easier to rate and review than a weekend morning. They were very busy, nearly all tables filled and with 2 very hard working and fully utilized servers. The prices are low and I was looking forward to trying their breakfast. I waited about 25 minutes for my food straight off the menu, and when you consider how busy they were, it could be expected. Yes I had breaky for under $10, including tip. I have been meaning to try this place for a couple years and we finally made it here last weekend. I was hoping to be wowed but I don't feel that was the case. When we arrived the place was nearly full (a good sign). We grabbed one of the last remaining seats. Considering how busy they were we were waited on in a timely manner but this is definitely not somewhere you go if you are in any kind of a rush. I ordered chicken fried steak with hashbrowns & eggs - my gf ordered biscuits and gravy. After a extremely long wait the food arrived. The chicken fried steak was very small but delicious, the hash browns were decent, the eggs were cooked perfect & the whole thing was doused (way too much) in sausage gravy. Her biscuits had so much gravy on them that you couldn't even see the biscuits and the biscuits were doughy and flat. The staff was friendly and the food was not terrible, it just did not live up to the hype or expectations from what I have heard from others. There are many other places to get breakfast and I doubt we will be back any time soon. read more

Duncan's Cafe is great example of getting what you pay for. It's not the best food in the world, but it beats the pants off any fast food joint. I will get their breakfast a few times a week due to this pricing and location, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have Duncan's. I love Duncan's cafe, the employees are very friendly and helpful, they treat everyone like a regular and can usually have your order nearly memorized after just a few visits. They rush around like it's a racetrack but that's because the place is generally packed. The atmosphere is clean, pleasant and inviting and makes it feel like you're part of the family, there are even wedding photos in the booths. It reminds me of being sent back in time, it has a small town cafe feel, because that's exactly what it is. The food is good, not the greatest I've had but better than a lot of other cafe food. You get awesome portions for the money, the pancakes are gigantic and delicious. They serve breakfast all day, with the exception on 12-2, and it's probably my favorite part of the place. I wish they had more options for vegetarians, but what do you expect from an old American cafe? And the breakfast is good enough for me. I like the location, in an old hotel of sorts but it makes it a bit harder to find and it's a bit small for how packed it always is, overall though it's a great place to get breakfast! read more

Don't let the old building and decor fool you. While it is not a highly modernized, decorated, or 'normal' type cafe it was one of the best breakfast joints I have eaten at. The staff was amazingly nice and very quick and the food was fantastic. I love crunchy on the outside and soft inside hash browns. Best French toast I have ever had, and the omelet was gigantic and fresh. The only thing negative about what I came to breakfast for was the coffee. No flavor and very mild. This place is one of two local landmarks residents insist one simply must patronize, but after a half dozen disappointing visits since 2001 with NO NEGATIVE REVIEWS from me , it's time to admit Duncan's needs a rescue. The coffee is the worst sort of diner fair, but if you like weak, flavorless coffee with notes of bitter oils and filter, have at it. To their credit, they keep the cups full. I had ham, eggs and hashbrowns on my last visit. The ham portion was huge but processed. The hashbrowns were homemade homemade but mushy inside. The restaurant is in an odd basement locale. The staff is great. Very friendly. The prices aren't bad and you will leave physically full, but spiritually this is not the comfort food you are looking for. read more
