I got the Pedro's salad, because I wanted something a bit more exciting than the taco salad. There were no red peppers, no yellow peppers, no beans, it's iceberg lettuce, and the "red" onions are spicy cooking yellow onions. I would have thought the veggies would have been fajita style since it's a Mexican restaurant... nope, raw green pepper and yellow onion. It came with free chips and salsa that I thought would maybe salvage the meal... no. The salsa is watered down. I still ate it because I'm starving, but I finished it and am still hungry. Sue and I went here after a few yrs of not. Loved the old place to the East. I understand the downsizing deal, tho. Sue had the Taco Salad. Said it was very good. Not the usual hamburger inside a tortilla filled with lettuce. I did the meat and bean Nachos. Also very good. Dollop of sour cream and guac (not enough for me, tho). Chips seemed to stay fairly crispy down to the bottom. Chips and salsa was a nice opening touch. Salsa, of course, was not hot enough for me. Spose I coulda asked for hotter but didn't. Also, no additional bottled sauces on table. I coulda used some of that. Service was good even after large graduation party, taking up 3 long tables, came in with one server, and so was Marg. Yum. Went here with my family yesterday and our service was absolutely terrible. We were sat in a booth where I had to scoot all the way towards the wall because of a big hole in the booth cushion. There was a curtain near the wall that was filthy with food stains. While our California Steak Burrito was decent, our waiter was rude and had no customer service skills. Any request seemed like an inconvenience, and we had to get his attention multiple times for him to come to our table. He'd sit down and watch videos on his phone that were louder than the music playing in the restaurant. At one point we saw him leave the restaurant then come back inside.. While we were eating another couple came in and sat themselves, he seemed to have a problem with that because those customers stood up.. it was an awkward situation. We stopped in on a Friday evening for dinner. It couldve easily been passed up, because the older building isn't very well lit. I ordered Puerta Vallarta Quesadilla - was so delicious! Shrimp, scallops (were small) with grilled onions & peppers. My hubs ordered the Big D burrito & ate every bite! The Big D is a hearty meal, steak & bacon, grilled onions (what a great combo) topped with chorizo sauce. We were very satisfied with our meals. Our waiter did a top notch job of checking in on us! The food here is so good. It's our favorite Mexican Restaurant and has been for many years. I've liked everything I've ever tried (and I've tried a lot of things). Some things more than others, obviously, but you can never go wrong with things like the California Burrito, Tacos, the Chipotle Shrimp, Fajitas, Nachos San Jose, The Big D Burrito, Chimichangas, the list goes on and on. You will get more food dining in than if you order it to take out, but you still get plenty of food for your dollar. Used to eat occasionally at their location on the other side of town. Stopped there last Friday evening. Both of us as it happened had the Chimichanga's hers was chicken mine 'steak'. My guess is they are purchased frozen then reheated. Used to be something they did very sell, even list it on the menu as a "specialty". It WASN'T. Their definition of steak is ground beef, or hamburger, not even a high grade of ground beef. When we walked in the weather outside was raining, and it was nearly empty........this is ANOTHER example of a place who established a great reputation, and then decided to make a few more dollars by cheapening the product. If they moved to Broadway to increase walk-in traffic, it isn't working...OR enough people have figured out it isn't very good. Interesting side note.....when we walked in there was 2 other tables being used, one left within minutes of our arriving, BUT it was nearly an hour before the empty tables with food from previous customers were cleared....Is this an attempt to look as though they are busy? read more

Very authentic mexican restaurant! The manager Santiago was the best and really attented to our every need :) we had chiliaquilles,wet burrito, taco combo plate all for a really good price. Here's a tip if you want to grab an alcoholic beverage. A pitcher cost $17 (it'll feed 3-5 people) the goblet cups already come almost filled and the pitcher is full all the way to the top! It seems like people either love it or hate it here. I guess I love it. I will agree that the waiter that is there at lunch time is not the friendliest. He does his job but is not overly nice. He has always taken good care of me but I never feel like he is happy to see me. I can only review one item on the menu because it is all I have ever had. I LOVE nachos at restaurants. I grew up near a place that served chorizo nachos that were my absolute favorite. At Puerto Vallarta, I only order the Nachos San Jose. They are nachos with chicken and chorizo, cooked with onions, covered in cheese and topped with sour cream and cilantro. I love these nachos. They are so good. I'm sure they are super unhealthy so no one needs to tell me that. The regular chips and salsa that are served are fair. They bring you a small carafe of salsa and a small bowl to pour it in. The chips are not fresh and they are different chips than the ones used for the nachos. I'll keep coming back for my beloved Nachos San Jose! read more

I really dont mind the food here. The typical taco or enchilada dosent have much flavor but Ive found a few things that were good. The fajitas are really good. I usually call my orders in but they usually forget something. Like an order of cheese dip or some extra tortillas. I gave 1 star for 1 reason. The waiter with the bad haircut. He is the worst waiter I have ever encountered at any restraunt anywhere. Never smiles, acts like you're bothering him every time. He is incredibly rude and makes the experience uncomfortable. He ignores you when you arrive and when you get seated its all downhill. I would be a regular customer if not for him. The young guy is very polite and nice but he's rarely there. The only explanation as to why the other guy has his job is it must be a family situation. I've never seen seen someone's personality project itself through their haircut. read more

Then he walked away before we could continue any conversation. Cheese dip tasted like warm cream cheese with no flavor. The salsa was nice and spicy though and our food came pretty fast. The chimi changas (sp?) tasted like stale fry oil and was full of tasteless beef. No veggies. The rice was dry and had no flavor. So basically salsa is the only reason I am giving this place a star at all. Otherwise if I could I would give them 0. Save your time and go to Taco Bell. On top of everything else after our food arrived we never saw our waiter again. We sat waiting to pay the bill for over 20 minutes. No one so much as asked us if we needed water. And if you think that the management will care you are wrong. We were told basically tough crap. We asked to speak to the owner and then we were told the manager actually was the owner how sad. read more

First, and this is a biggie: there's complimentary chips and salsa.The chips are super thin, and the salsa pretty spicy and tasty. Last weekend I ordered a cheese enchilada meal with enchiladas, rice and beans. It was served warm, and it all tasted just fine. This place is not terrible but it is by no means anything special. It is very LaMesa-ish with a larger menu. This is not necessarily a bad thing but the food is not up to par. The guacamole was pre-made and pureed. The shrimp quesadilla tasted fishy, and the huevos con chorizo was decent but nothing special. Of course the serving size is way too much and thus the cost is way too much but that is most restaurants. A good waiting staff/manager should take a notice and ask how the food/drinks are. The food is so so good. The proprietor is friendly, great place for families too. The portions are ginormous, plan to take home enough for your next meal! Have never had to wait for a table which does not make sense, they should have a waiting list! I think there are some pretty authentic choices, not just Americanized items. read more

The building isn't much to look at, but the food and the service was outstanding! Our waiter was very friendly and the pork tacos I ordered were so tender and juicy! I loved the assortment of salsas they gave me, and how they gave us a small container of salsa for our chips. Miguel M has been my waiter the past 2 times, and I refuse to allow him to be my waiter in the future. I've ordered an appetizer the last 2 times, and both times he's forgotten to bring it out. The whole night was a disaster. My husband and I were seated, had orders taken for drinks. We then received chips n salsa nearly 5 minutes before getting our drinks. My husband then orders carne assada which came to him whole (it took 15 minutes to get a steak knife). And without the grilled onions. I ran out of water halfway through my meal never to receive a refill. I could understand it if were drinking soda as its a little more expensive) but all I needed was a little bit of water.
