Good authentic restaurant with that Ma and Pa feeling. MARG AMAZING not sweet at all just that good silver tequila with some lime taste. Their house salsa and chips were also amazing (not a huge fan of the verde) but the red i literally chugged very yum. I got the chile relleno which was decent, lukewarm when i got it but i'm just the type of person that wants to feel the gates of hell when i eat or drink hot beverages. Today I learned there's a whole 24th corridor in South Omaha full of historic buildings and Mexican food. Pure heaven! El Alamo has a colorful interior, recently redone according to the conversations I overheard. The space is massive, though quiet during covid. I always judge a Mexican restaurant on their salsas. Both were more of the watery style. The green was tasty but the red was astonishingly good, full of peppery leftovers and hot as hades. I used every one of my chips to clean it up. For my lunch, I ordered the pollo a la naranja, which is a family recipe. It was quite tasty, but my plate came out in a virtual soup: the beans and the sauce had run together, like the whole thing had been microwaved too long. Refried beans should have some texture, not be soupy. In short, exactly what I wanted for a classic Mexican lunch, but I'll keep searching for my perfect Mexican place in Omaha. read more

Where should I start! After everyone mentioned they had really good grilled chicken we decided to go on a Sunday we got there maybe around 1:30pm there was only 1 couple in there. The buss boy took our drink order and said the waitress was coming to get the food order when we asked her if they had chicken she said no we should've called in before because they don't sell grilled chicken on Wednesday and Sundays then my mom asked what they had ready and with a sarcastic remark she answered well look at the menu! We came here pre-covid so our experience is a little different than current times but none the less it was still a great service. Recommended by a close friend who works in the area we took our date night "on the road" as this is about 40 minutes from our house in NW Omaha. Located near 24th and Harrison, which oddly was the cross streets of my apartment in San Francisco, this was just like being in The Mission. I'm on a quest to try all the quesos in Omaha and this one is pretty good. Not my favorite but I enjoyed the extra kinds of salsas and they have a hot one for my husband. He ordered tacos and enchilada and I had the fajitas. We cheers over margaritas and by the end of the night we could barely walk out...because we were so full! The food was phenom and the drinks were just right, I really don't like super syrupy margaritas and these were great! The service was typical for a Mexican restaurant, with a few checks here and there a drop of the bill as the drinks ended. No complaints here. This place gets 5 stars for the margaritas alone. Dang, maybe the best margaritas I've ever had. Strong, too. I think I ordered the wrong thing, I didn't love my meal but it wasn't bad at all. My friends really liked their food. We got two salsas and they were very good, not crazy spicy but just enough. Don't be thrown off by the lack of customers. It was cozy and comfortable. The place is a little older and could use a design makeover but it didn't seem dirty. It seemed like one woman running the whole show but she was sweet and motherly, anticipated anything we could need. Service wasn't crazy slow but I wouldn't go there if you are in a hurry. Excellent Omaha eatery that specializes in Mexican cuisine. I decided to come here on my birthday, and I'm happy to say that I don't regret it in the slightest. This unique place possesses a highly decorated interior that will immediately catch your eyes. The staff here are immensely friendly; they routinely check up on you and make sure your experience here is a good one. The food and service are both very up to par, as it only takes up to 10-20 minutes for the food to come. The quality of the food (which in my case was burritos, beans, and rice with a nacho appetizer for the family) is very good; no flaws that I could detect. Lots of flavor in my meal. This place is pretty much all someone can want when looking for a restaurant that serves good Mexican food. I highly recommend coming here to eat. read more

We ordered through a delivery app but they couldn't get to the restaurant because the street was closed for Cinco de Mayo. One of the people at the restaurant called me and said he would bring the order himself since nobody picked it up. He got to our house faster than the delivery app probably would have. I've been coming to El Alamo with my family for many years. Growing up in South Omaha and having my Indigenous roots planted in Mexico, I tend to love the food and the atmosphere here. We used to live two blocks from this restaurant and I've spent many birthdays, Christmas, and special occasions here with family. With the COVID still in play, I decided to use their on-line Menu Star ordering system. It was very easy to order from and when I got to the restaurant everything was prepared and ready. It looks like the restaurant is going through some renovations during this time and upgrading their interior designs. I love the hot pink Neon light on the wall displaying "El Alamo". I miss the great times that I've had in this restaurant, and the owners are always so nice. This time I ordered the two Enchilada and Taco Combination with beans and rice. As usual, I am never disappointed. Good food from a well respected restaurant, and always happy with my meals here! They are allowing indoor seating as well if you wish to eat inside. Typical Mexican joint- music in the background and a novella on the TV. I was one of only two tables dining last night. I decided to try this place because I had a Groupon. First, I had the complimentary chips and salsa. It turned out to be some of the best traditional salsa I've had in a very long time- including the spiciness of it. I ordered chicken mole, a beef enchilada and a beef taco. I recommend the mole, it is SO well seasoned and my chicken was tender. I had stopped ordering mole for the most part because it never seemed to taste as good as I remembered it the first few times I ever had it, but this mole was great! Enchiladas are on the small side, but priced perfectly at under three bucks and no doubt I will always get one when I dine here. The soft taco was my least favorite. At first I thought they'd made a mistake and brought me a hard taco, but then I realized it was probably a soft taco, fried. In either case, the shell has texture I've never encountered. I won't order another. I really enjoyed my food here. It all came out hot and fresh tasting. I will definitely come back! read more

I love Authentic Mexican food. Passing through my husband and I wanted Mexican food so we got into a hotel and ordered from here. My husband is allergic to tomatoes, so we just ordered a burrito with just the meat, cheese, and sour cream. I order the carne asada tacos cause those are my favorite. The burrito wasn't even made right. They added lettuce and tomatoes so we didn't even touch those. It went right in the trash. My tacos were just tortillas and meat. Authentic tacos normally has diced onions and cilantro in it. The sour cream tasted like straight up yogurt. I read the reviews on here people saying it's the best authentic Mexican food they've had. I'm pretty sure they never really had authentic Mexican food then cause there was nothing authentic about it. read more

We love this place so much; the margaritas are fiery, the food always satisfies my craving for filling, flavorful Mexican food, the owners and staff are warm and welcoming. I love the el pastor tacos, chile rellano (you can get regular or poblano and both are amazing), enchiladas, and salsa roja. I appreciate the service and ability to social distance here; it is usually pretty quiet and relaxing. We were the only table in the house, so our service was prompt and wonderful. The authentic Mexican food -- not the Tex-Mex that passes for Mexican food these days -- was extremely good. I find that if you find a particular ethnic restaurant where there is only one person who speaks English, and that persons only job is to run around and take everyone's order; you are about to eat some damn delicious ethnic food. This describes El Alamo to a T. In fact, I've been there before when the guy who speaks English was gone, and I had to order using a combination of awkward pointing and my even more awkward fragmented Spanish. The food is always amazing here, I hate most of the 'americanized' mexican restaurants because their process mostly consists of 'tortilla+flavorless meat+sauce from a packet'. El Alamo actually cooks their food with, you know, flavor and stuff. I won't really comment on the atmosphere, mostly because there is none, unless you consider Primera División on the mini-TV by the cash register. The street parking can be a bit tenuous, but I've never had to walk more than a block or two. I highly recommend this place for authentic Mexican food without a lot of fluff. read more

If you're not a fan of real, actual Mexican food, Omaha is packed with other restaurants that will serve you a more Americanized version. If you're looking for something unique to try, let me take the risk out of your decision and recommend any of their dishes with mole sauce. The chicken mole is probably one of my favorites. Let's see...this is the first place I ate out at when I first moved to Nebraska back in 1991. It was heavily recommended to my parents so off we went. Now I sit here in 2011 and I will still say this is my go-to place to get a hot bit of Mexican shoved down my throat. My usual pick is the Steak a la Mexicana and the finish it off with a hot sopapialla and that's the love I'm talking about. Then again I could sit there and eat the chips and salsa all day...for the rest of my life. They have a wide variety of other fare for people to dig into and my special lady friend plans to run away and marry their chile relleno...poor me. In closing I will say that El Alamo has been a "hole in the wall" part of my life for about 20 years and I could not see myself never eating there again. I came here on a slow night at the end of a terrible weather day. The streets were a mess. I chose correctly. I do not rate places on their free stuff, but I have to say I really enjoyed the salsas... both red and green. They both had multi-dimensional flavor profiles and a little bit of heat. I ordered Flautas with beef and they were delicious. Crispy, not greasy. Shredded beef interior. Good sour cream and guac on the top. The beans were okay and the rice were okay. What better way to celebrate Halloween than at El Alamo for some Pollo en Mole and Chile Rillenos? Our first time here. They had a Living Social deal. Let's give it a shot. I got the Pollo en Mole and a classic margarita on the rocks. Chips and salsa, of course, come free with the meal. And they're served with salsa verde and traditional salsa. I stick with traditional and this salsa was spicy. Probably tame for most, but this skinny white dude was sipping Margarita after every bite. I did like the consistency - it was thicker than most salsas - like tomato paste was involved, not just tomato sauce. Cilantro was tame but plenty of pepper seeds in here. Oh boy. Still, it was good. Pollo en mole was good. Mole sauce was very tasty. Sweet and spicy. I got double Spanish rice instead of rice and beans. Rice was light and fluffy and tasted just right. The dish came with three warm tortillas (I chose flour) and some lettuce/tomato. Biggest complaint was that the chicken was excruciatingly dry. Just bone dry. But I cut it up and covered it in mole sauce and with the sauce and the tortillas and some crisp lettuce and tomato it definitely hit the spot. Margarita lacked kick and bite. Seemed a bit watered down. Still good, but not the best. Would I go back? Yes. Why? The Chile Rillenos. Dang. Very, very good. Grab that Living Social and check out El Alamo! read more

Went here on a weekday lunch with a colleague last month. I had been here before, maybe a year ago, and couldn't remember if I liked it or not, so I decided to try it. It was fairly empty inside, so I expected we'd zip right through. Nope. The older, hobbled waitress (she had a boot on her foot) was sweet, but everything seemed to move at a snail's pace--taking our order, getting our order, getting a to go box. I think she was really the only person waiting on tables (in a place, like I said, that was not crowded--maybe three tables of people?). And, then one you get the food, it's okay. Not exactly gross like Taco Bell, but not knock you down good either. A little greasy. Good portion sizes, I think, but I've had better. I may be biased after living in California for years, so this is probably pretty good for Omaha, but, for me, I don't think it's worth the trip back. read more

El Alamo has been my favorite Mexican restaurant for years. I avoid gluten but I can eat several dishes here. They don't offer a waiting area, they seat you. Or if they aren't busy, you may seat yourself. I don't drink but they serve a variety of beer and mixed drinks, including margaritas. Their staff is bilingual. The atmosphere is unpretentious, comfortable, and it is affordable. Service isn't always the fastest, but it's worth waiting for. Front and back entrances. They have a bar section, an eating section, and party rooms. El Alamo is located in the middle of the renovated South 24th Street area and is next door to a Mexican pottery store. I stopped in for dinner with a friend who swears this is one of the best restaurants in Omaha, and I have to agree. The food was phenomenal and for Mexican food - it's a authentic and as delicious as it gets!! I had the horchata, the chicken mole and the flan and my dining partner had the burrito especiale. My mole was the perfect balance of savory, spicy and sweet but It's hard to put into words the flavor that is the result of a simmered mixture of various chiles (including chipotle), pepper, peanuts, almonds, cinnamon, anise seed, tomato, onion, garlic, and, of course, chocolate. It's tastes like it's made from scratch without shortcuts or pre-made pastes. Amazing. I chose flour tortillas as an accompaniment but corn is also available. The flan was also silky smooth, a perfect custard with the perfect caramelized topping. It will be one of my 'MUST STOP' locations in Omaha. The prices for dinner were also reasonable and we didn't crack $30 for what we had which included a nice basket of complimentary chips, salsas, and coffee w/refills along with my dessert.
