I went to Author's Kitchen to meet a group of friends. We were all coming from out of town and randomly picked somewhere for brunch. We were very happy we ended up at Author's and would definitely recommend it to all. Author's accommodated our group of ten with easy. It has a great atmosphere and even better food. Our waitress was friendly but not over bearing, she was very knowledgeable and communicated with the kitchen about a couple special requests our table made. I ordered empanadas and a cup of soup and was very happy with both. The empanadas were excellent! My bloody Mary was also very good! We enjoyed a great dinner here starting with an appetizer of shrimp bites with a spicy aioli and some amazing empanadas. Our entrees were scallops and salmon - both served with a sweet potato and butternut squash hash. Both were delicious and served hot. The food came quickly, but not rushed. When we left, every table was full and about 25 people in the bar area waiting to be seated. The menu is not huge, but it offers plenty of options to please any diner. Good wine and prices. My wife and I recently had dinner on a Friday night at Authors and it was an exceptional experience! It's a lovely location right in the heart of Appleton, with a nice modern decor. The staff are all friendly, courteous and knowledgeable of the menu. The drink menu is really nice, but we both thought they had a great wine list - well thought out with plenty of wines at any price point. The food is what really sets them apart though - it is spectacular! The empanadas were some of the best we've had, the burrata salad was fresh and delicious, but the main courses were something special. I had the braised short ribs with mushroom risotto. The short ribs were tender and moist with a lovely sauce. The mushroom risotto was prepared perfectly - still firm, but with a melt in your mouth creaminess that you only get from well prepared risotto. That is a dish that will keep me coming back by itself. My wife had the halibut special with an acorn squash risotto. The halibut was a nicely large piece and cooked to perfection. The risotto, again, was perfectly prepared with a wonderful flavor and creaminess. Overall, it was a great experience and I would not hesitate in recommending Authors to any one. read more

AMAZING EXPERIENCE. My husband and I popped into their outdoor dining area for dinner tonight and had such a wonderful time. Our server was wonderful, cocktails/beer more than enjoyable, and food was incredible. We got a burrata to start with which I highly recommend. My husband got the short ribs which he loved and I got the gnocchi w/ mushrooms which was seriously the best I'd ever had (and our family is Italian!). The owner stopped by our table and the love that her and her husband have for the restaurant is definitely reflected in the quality of food and service. The locals in the college street shops gave us a recommendation so we checked it out. The service was outstanding. Our server made sure we were taken care of and we never needed anything. She even told us a little about the area which was nice since we were visiting from out of town. The ambiance was relaxing but we did get there shortly after opening for the day. The restaurant continued to fill up after we were seated but the attention from the staff stayed the same which I appreciated. All of that is nice but for nothing if the food doesn't match. I'm here to tell you the food did not disappoint. The menu has the right amount of options to keep you interested but not overwhelmed. The scallop appetizer was well done. The truffle butter and spinach complemented the seared bay scallops. The gnocchi with wild mushrooms was my choice. Just when I had given up ever getting a well cooked scallop in Wisconsin, we stopped in to Author's. Seems like every place, in this part of Wisconsin wants to cook the crap out of every piece of seafood. Unfortunately, cooking scallops to well done makes them nasty, hard little hockey pucks that taste like crap. Fresh scallops should be quickly seared to get a nice golden crust, leaving the interior somewhere between medium rare and medium. And this is exactly what I got! But what about the rest of the food? It was all fantastic, from the pre-dinner cocktails to dessert, we enjoyed it all. We started dinner with the meat and cheese tray as well as the roasted Brussels sprouts. Both of which were excellent. I especially liked the selection of cheeses served that night-not sure how often they change it up so wont mention what cheeses as it may be different next week. Suffice to say, they were all high quality cheeses. I, obviously, had the scallop entree, which came with a squash and sweet potato hash. My wife had one of their pasta dishes, which, supposedly, is their speciality. All their pasta is made, fresh, in house. Hers was tasty, but just slightly over sauced. Her pasta was also just a bit undercooked, but those 2 small issues are easily forgivable, especially the undercooked pasta. As a chef I know how difficult fresh pasta can be, in a restaurant setting. It is often best to plate it slightly undercooked as it will continue cooking as it makes it's way to the guest and you definitely dont want the pasta to be overcooked by the time it reaches the guest as overcook, fresh pasta is just bad. Service as excellent! Our server was very personable and professional. Our food came out in a timely manner but not so quick as to make us feel rushed. Cannot. Wait. To try this in person. We've ordered carry out & delivery and every time they never miss the mark. The pasta is a game changer. My go-to is the truffle cream with wild mushrooms gnocci and the salmon sashimi appetizer (super fresh). I also play something I call the "soup lottery"with daily special soups and so far the wild mushroom and asparagus were savory as heck. By far the best restaurant that we've found in Appleton. You won't see many families but it's definitely kid-friendly. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and a well-rounded, diverse menu (especially for the area). Only negatives, and this is nitpicking: 1. Not very cocktail-focused. Would love if they had a list of specialty or house cocktails. 2. This might sound odd but the entree portions are actually too large. A few entrees are served atop risottos which taste awesome, but it's honestly 2-2 1/2 portions. Again, nitpicking.
