    Dessert!

If you look back over my reviews, there are not a ton of 5-star reviews. On my first, but not last, visit to Author's there was virtually nothing to complain about! We went to one of their limited dinner services. I had called the day before and reserved a table. When we were quickly seated at a table by the entrance, I admit being suspect of how our visit would go. The hostess asked if the table was alright and pointed out a heater by the table. Not only did it keep us warm, it made our table feel cozy. Despite it being very busy, I'd describe the restaurant as being a great place for a special date. Our waiter for the evening brought great energy. His timing was great and his knowledge of the food served was helpful. Without hesitation he suggested the Napolitana (which was phenomenal). He also made the restaurant less pretentious than I had assumed it would be and it definitely wasn't pretentious). We ordered the empanadas and beet salad as appetizers. Great picks and I'd return just to get the empanadas! As previously stated, I had the Napolitana. My dining partner has the quinoa bowl but added chicken to it. No complaints for either. We finished with two desserts suggested by our waiter. Although truly full from our meal, we polished off the tasty treats. I'm going back, just disappointed I've haven't visited it before now.

Visiting Appleton for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food scene is, and Authors Kitchen + Bar was a standout! We enjoyed it so much that we ended up eating there two mornings in a row. The Café Batido is a must-try--the caramel tastes homemade and adds the perfect touch. I ordered the Cheese Risotto Cake, and it was easily one of my top 3 breakfasts ever! On day two, I had the Huevos Rancheros, which was equally impressive. My friend tried the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Braised Short Rib Benny--both were absolutely delicious. The restaurant has a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, and the wait staff were wonderful. I'd return to Appleton just to try some of their dinners. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic brunch here recently. The staff were friendly. They have a nice bar area and several tables inside. The short rib benedict was phenomenal. Great flavor and portion size. My daughter enjoyed the cheesy scrambled eggs and bacon. The salmon BAA sandwich had great flavor as well. We will be back.

This is an updated review for my first lunch outing at Author's After dining here for dinner on several occasions, I decided I needed to give their lunch menu a go. Again, I can't rave enough about their food. I decided to try out their special of the day which happened to be the braised short rib on risotto. This meal was stunning and I'm glad I tried it. Also, the drizzle of balsamic on the eggs Benedict added the perfect touch. Per usual, we tried one of each of their daily empanada flavors. These are my favorite appetizers offered at authors. Even when trying a new flavor we are never disappointed. Service is always excellent and you can never go wrong with any of their recommendations.

Do yourself a favor and get reservations to this incredible, family owned, local eatery! We were fortunate enough to snag last minute reservation for one of their rare evening dinner services. Seriously this was the highest quality, best tasting food we have experienced in the Valley. From the Bourbon Old Fashioned to start the night, to the risotto cake and empanada apps, to the melt in your mouth beef short ribs, or the handmade truffle gnocchi, all the way to the warm berry cobbler for dessert, this was a true culinary delight. Our server was prompt, friendly and even a bit comical. Every restaurant needs staff like her! (Sorry I misplaced her name, I'd love to give a public shout out because she deserved it.) The vibe is warm and inviting. Thank you for making an all to rare family dinner night so memorable. We look forward to our next dinner experience at Author's.

    Croque Madame, absolutely delicious!

I Came Back to Appleton... Wisconsin Immediately Fed Me…read more There are many ways to kick off an HS Reunion weekend. Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about finding the newest or trendiest place. Sometimes it's about sitting down with someone who knows you, sharing some great food and beer, and realizing some things really do feel like coming home. Stone Arch was a damn good way to start the reunion. Would absolutely return.

My wife had the Reuben sandwich and onion rings. I wish they had a younger clientele. Younger folks would really enjoy their great selections! I didn't know how busy it gets, but they had plenty of tables open, although we came at about 5pm. The ambience was favorable to the dining. The lighting was intimate but not dark. They were extremely friendly and accommodating and had no problem getting all of us taken care of. I kept it pretty simple and got a burger and a beer. The burger was really good and everything came out well, especially considering how many of us there were. What really stood out though was the service. One person in our group is extremely picky about how she likes her steak cooked and ended up sending it back three times. Each time they were friendly about it and genuinely seemed more concerned with getting it right for her than being annoyed about having to remake it again. For us to come in with 25 people on such short notice and still have everyone be so friendly and accommodating was really appreciated. They handled our group incredibly well and never made us feel like an inconvenience. Definitely a 5-star experience and somewhere I would come back to.

It was a Trio Diavolo, a trio of protein with squid pasta, and a red sauce. I didn't understand that the proteins were diced bits that were stirred into the red sauce pasta. I actually thought the protein was separate from a side of pasta. It disappointed me because I generally dislike seafood in red sauce, but honestly, that wasn't their fault so I still gave them a high rating. Service was friendly and playful. Pretty efficient and seemed to like their job. It is a beautiful restaurant with a pretty amazing view, even if the water is at very sad low levels. Maybe this is natural, I've never been here before. All of the wildlife/birds really enhanced the experience. Flocks of seagulls (not the band), and surprisingly large number of pelicans were wonderful to watch. You can see the riverfront exterior and distant bridge in my standard and 360° photos. In November 2025 the burger special was the Apple Butter Badger burger, which was a 1/3 pound patty topped with smashed fried cheese curds, sliced apples, apple butter, and wonton strips on a salted pretzel bun. My family and I stopped for dinner so I could give it a try. In addition to the burger I got tater tots. While I don't mind mixing savory and sweet in combos I'm not used to, like having apple on a burger, this particular burger was fine to try once but it's probably not something I'd get again. The apple didn't stand out until the last couple of bites when all I had left was the middle (I eat around the middle first). The wonton strips seemed unnecessary and I would have preferred the pretzel bun without the salt on top. The apple butter was great and stood out in every bite. The tater tots may have been the crunchiest I've ever had and, as someone that has crunch as their favorite food texture, I thoroughly enjoyed them. My wife got the PB&J burger with strawberry jelly and no jalapenos. One kid for the regular Badger burger and the other got just a plain cheeseburger. They also had fries for their side. All of them liked their meals and said they'd get them again. Prices seem super reasonable compared to most other restaurants. The bar area and tables were mostly full, yet our food came out reasonably quick, which was appreciated. Home Burger Bar is a place I'd keep coming back to.
