I Came Back to Appleton... Wisconsin Immediately Fed Me…read more There are many ways to kick off an HS Reunion weekend. Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about finding the newest or trendiest place. Sometimes it's about sitting down with someone who knows you, sharing some great food and beer, and realizing some things really do feel like coming home. Stone Arch was a damn good way to start the reunion. Would absolutely return.

Coming back to the Fox Valley for my high school reunion, I expected to revisit some familiar territory. What I didn't expect was to find a lakefront destination that felt like a little slice of Miami dropped into Neenah. Waverly Beach Bar & Grille is a vibe. The outdoor patio and tiki bar are easily the biggest draw for me. Boats pulling up, drinks flowing, the water stretching out in front of you and that nighttime moon reflecting across the Ocean (MidWestern lake)~it legitimately gives you that "Am I still in Wisconsin?" feeling. The photos don't really do the location justice. Inside, there's plenty of space and a cool atmosphere that would translate extremely well for birthdays, reunions, private parties and other events. Then there's the staff. Michelle, Dakota, Jason & David--THANK YOU! We were there for our reunion and the service was phenomenal. Everyone brought positive energy, which unfortunately isn't something you can take for granted in the hospitality industry these days. Food~wise, I sampled the buffet and enjoyed the tacos. And as someone who loves exploring craft beer, having Spotted Cow on draft all night definitely made me happy. That said, I feel like I only scratched the surface here. The verdict: Waverly Beach isn't just somewhere to grab a drink. It's a destination. I'm coming back because I need to properly explore the food, beer selection and, most importantly that cute bartender they were calling Ms. Jackson (In my OutKast voice~IYKYK), & spend more time on that patio. My next business trip out there is in like 11 days, so I'll definitely stop in for the Brews.Views. & Food! Brews. Views. Food. Wisconsin ocean front property life. The real gem is Tanner's amazing selection of sides to choose from - you can swap in a twice baked potato, kettle chips with French onion dip, steamed broccoli, grilled asparagus or potato salad! Any other place would up-charge but Tanner's doesn't. I chose grilled asparagus and appreciated the separate packaging so the sandwich didn't get soggy.
